IMac superdrive not accepting disks

I have a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac that will not accept CDs or DVDs. When I attempt to load a CD/DVD the disk gets stuck half way in, as if there was a disk already in the superdrive (which there isn't, having checked in finder, disk utility, etc). I have tried resetting the SMC but without any success. Is this (yet another) faulty drive or does anybody have any other fixes?
Thanks

If it will Not accept any disks AND there is definitely not one already in it, it has unfortunately died.  I would recommend if you are not under Warranty, getting an External USB DVD/CD writer from a name brand such as LG from Amazon.com or such for about $30 US.  Much cheaper than Apple's and works fine.

New Update, I took my computer and put it on my backpack and something weird is moving inside the Drive. That could be the problem. I think that on Monday im taking the computer to an AASP.
My question is, do they accept my warranty status (The apple one)? And, how much time will it take? I use this Mac for work

  • HELP - iMac SuperDrive not accepting any discs

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me.
I have a 21.5-inch, Mid 2010 iMac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 and the SuperDrive is acting up.
To put it simply: it's not accepting any discs.
And I don't mean that the discs go in and get ejected right away. No, I can't push them in. I know you have to push the discs in further (and with a bit more force) than on previous iMac models, but I get about half of the disc in and then it just stops. It feels as though it's hitting something and I'm not stupid enough to push harder and probably get it jammed.
    I've tried a few things:
    - reset the PRAM
    - used Terminal to force the drive to eject and it only made a faint beeping sound, not what you'd expect
    - logged into my Windows partition and tried to load a disc in there
    and it's still the same.
The weirdest thing is that I loaded a DVD without any trouble just yesterday!
Has anyone encoutered this problem? Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks in advance.

As I was putting my iMac to sleep last night, the SuperDrive made a noise, the iMac woke itself up and then the drive worked just fine. I'm baffled but glad.

  • Super drive not accepting disk

iMac mid 2010 27in has suddenly stopped accepting disks in the superdrive.  Disk gets pulled in but not caught and spit out about a second later.

try an System Management Controller (SMC) reset.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Why won't my imac dvd drive accept disk?

My 21 inch iMac won't accept a dvd or cd. Is this a hardware or software issue, and what do I do?

Try these two things, the SMC reset will be most effective so follow that step closely.
    SMC Reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM:
    i. Ensure the machine is powered off.
ii. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
iii. Press the ‘power on’ button.
iv. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    v. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally.

  • Ibook G4 not accepting disks, can't reinstall system software

Hi, I have an early 2004 ibook G4. Last week, my computer had a repeating kernel panic, probably due to a new application overwriting hard drive data. I tried using disk utility and disk warrior to repair the damage, as well as numerous other things, such as zapping the pram and nvram and resetting the PMU, and it did not fix the drive. So I used disk rescue II to successfully get everything on my hard drive onto a backup firewire drive. I then erased the drive with disk utility using target disk mode from my new mac mini (intel)
I want to try reinstalling the system software from the install disks that came with my ibook. My ibook is now rejecting any disks that I put in the dvd/cd rom drive, even when I start it with the C key, and when I start with the option key and try putting the install disk one in, it spits it out. I tried using target disk mode, but when I put the installation disk for the ibook into my mac mini, I cannot start up the install disk program.
Is there anything else I can try without putting in a new hard drive?
    Thanks very much.

    Hmm,
I didn't see that you were using 10.3.9, so you may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #106464 on Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier) and Knowledge Base Document #58042 on A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac if you haven't already. You may want to try reseting the PMU (Knowledge Base Document #14449, which covers Resetting Powerbook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)).

  • IMac does not accept discs

    Hello everyone,
I just got off the phone with Apple support and I was told I should bring in my iMac to an apple store to get it checked out. However, I am EXTREMELY busy. So in the meantime I was wondering if anyone could help fix this issue:
I have a brand new iMac literally purchased a month ago, 21.5", when I insert a disc it keeps it for about three seconds and pops it right out, the disc does not even register with my computer.
Is there anyway to fix this without having to go all the way to the Apple store (I don't own a car).
    Thanks,
    Alex

    HI Alex and welcome...
You didn't mention which types of disc(s) you are using. CD / DVD
Are you referring to the install disc(s) that came with your iMac ???
Make sure these disks are readable...

  • First generation (EMC 1989) iMac will not accept DVDs or CDs

I've had my iMac for 2 years and all of a sudden i cannot put any disc into the disc drive. I don't know if there is a disc in there, if so it hasn't been recognised at all and no method of ejecting will work (even mouse click hold down restart.. and i cannot seem to access the Firmware either) I also don't remember ever putting a disc in and not being able to get it out. It seems there is something blocking the way. The drive is the same when trying to put the disc in whether it is on or off. The disc drive does appear in the system profiler as: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825 and after Media it says "no"
I have system updated recently. I have tried to "zap the PRAM" but that doesn't seem to do anything, perhaps my technique is wrong? Please help, i've got some CDs i really wanna upload!

    *A few suggestions to try:*
    Repair permissions & restart.

Try the Eject Key on your keyboard.
Try the Eject Option in the following:
    Finder>File>Eject (if not greyed out)
Launch Disk Utility (Finder>Go>Utilities), select the ‘stuck disc’ in the volume list on the left & then either click the "Eject Button, Press Command+E or choose File>Eject Disk.
    *Zapping PRAM procedure:*

You may have a bevil (sp) problem. Hopefully, you have AppleCare as you may need to contact your local AASP if none of the suggestions above work.
Also, suggest that you do forum search for your problem. There were users here experiencing the same problem as yourself regarding +"something blocking the way"+ on certain model G5 iMacs.

  • HELP: Intel iMac does not accept Tiger install DVD

A friend bought a used intel imac w/o any of the restore discs. He bought Tiger and wiped the hard drive but the computer will not start up from the Tiger disc when holding down C. How can we install Tiger onto this computer? Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

An intel Mac will only boot from the installer disk that came with it. It's an intel Tiger installer disk. You can't use a ppc Tiger installer disk. So, he needs to get the disks that came originally with the Mac. Or, wait for Leopard.

  • Imac Superdrive not recognizing inserted media, runs disc for a minute then spits it out.

2009 intel 24 inch Intel Imac either does not recognize cd or dvd I put in it and spits it out after spinning it around for a minute, or it swallows disc and I have to force shut down to get disc out. Other times it is able to read disc. Any ideas?

If the drive lenses have never been cleaned since you purchased your iMac, you may need to run the cleaning cycle more than once. Did you run the cleaning disc more than once?
If the problem is lessening, that means it still could be some dust on the lenses.
Also, look at the backs of the CD/DVDs to see if there are lots of scratches on the writing surface.
If there are, it may not be just the drive, but the discs, too!
I don't know about auto polishes for cleaning CD/DVDs, but they make consumer cleaners and polishes specifically to minimize, clear up most minor scratching on DVDs or CDs.
These are available in places that sell electronics and can be found online.
Maybe you need to try these ideas, first, before investing in a new drive.
Because if the CD/DVDs have surface scratches or imperfections that prevent it from being read or written too, this will still happen with the new external drive.
Trybthese ideas one more time, if still no joy, time to purchase an external FireWire CD/DVD writer.
    Good Luck!

  • Does anyone know what to do if the iMac will not accept cd's or dvd's

I recently went on a trip and decided it was a good idea to shut down my imac and take out any dvd's i had inserted (which was the sims 3) i came back home and restarted my computer and everything seemed to be working fine.  i wanted to re insert the game but the computer isnt even attempting to take the dvd.  nothing is inserted at the moment and i have restarted, and shut down the imac.  i did notice our power had gone out while i was away, but i didnt think that was an issue.  i have also tried inserting a few different types of cd's and dvd's just to make sure it wasnt the game i had wanted to put back in. no cd's or dvd's would insert though,  if anyone can help that would be great!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC; then, try again.

  • Mid 2010 Mac Mini slot drive will not accept disks.

    Problem:
Tried playing a new commercial DVD but all I got was the rainbow pinwheel, I tried to eject the disk which took maybe 2 minutes but did happen.  I tried inserting disk again into slot drive and it just won't go in and appears to hit something about halfway in, I assume it's the drive spindle that maybe hasn't retracted properly on the last eject.
    I have;
successfully played this DVD in this drive the day before,
since played this DVD in another player,
tried other DVD's and CD's since the problem arose and none will go in.
shut down and powered up, reset the SMC, NVRAM and PRAM nothing changes for the slot drive.
As this machine is the heart of my Media Centre it's a real problem.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in antici-pation,
    John

Thanks, I had read that discussion but must have missed the part about downloading the "ForcEject" tool so I will try that in the morning although I know there is nothing in the drive but maybe it'll reset the drive load/eject sequence.

  • Mac mini original superdrive not recognizing disk

This happened out of the blue...was reading disks last week, but
had trouble reading a commercially bought cd
and then wouldn't read disk burnt on it.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I will blow out the drive.
I may even try using the lens cleaning disk I have.
But I suspect that you are right, and that it has just given up the ghost.
IT is an old MacMini, but has been such a steady machine.
It is one of the Original MacMinis from 2005/2006!
