IMac switches itself off (Shutdown).

Hi all,
I have an annoying problem. Every time I turn on my iMac, it switches itself off.
I don't know what it is, it doesn't do it all the time, but when it switches itself off and then I turn it back on again, it doesn't happen again. But when I shut it down for the day and then when I switch it back on on the next day, it does the same thing again.
Has anyone had this problem? If so, how do you fix it?
Thanks
Wintoons

I had that same issue happen to a 20 inch iMac G5 I owned a few years ago. It would turn off just like you are saying and it turned out to be a bad video inverter.
Now I'm no expert, and this may not be your specific problem, but it sounds just like what was wrong with mine and when they changed the Video Inverter it never did it again. Maybe ask AppleCare if you still have it hopefully, if that could be the issue.
Have you run or even been able to keep it on long enough to run the Hardware Test disc and see what that tells you. There's a quick one and a longer more thorough test, i would try that one and see what it tells you.
Hope you get it fixed and figure it out. We love our Macs don't we?! Lol. I can't go a day without enjoying mine!

    Hello
you could try an SMC reset
    1- unplug all cable
2- push power button for at least 5 sec
3 - plug power cord - keyboard - mousse and restart

  • IMac switches itself off randomly

My iMac keeps randomly switching itself off. This happens when its just switched on and in use and happens when its asleep.
Anyone had this problem before? I cant seem to find any support articles on this..
    Thanks!

Was just about post about the same problem. I've got a 20" iMac G5 2.0Ghz and it has randomly started switching itself off (started a couple of months ago). There is not pattern at all, went a whole week last week and it didn't do it once, and then last night did it twice in the space of about 20 minutes.
Glad to read there is a solution, I will check the EMC number when I get home later.
One other thing – If the EMC number +is not+ 2056... what happens then?!

  • My Imac occasionally switches itself off

My Imac(Intel) occasionally switches itself off. To bring it back to life I have to unplug it from the mains for a couple of hours. On plugging it back in the fan immediately starts up very noisily but nothing else happens. By holding down the on/off switch I turn the machine off. By pressing the on/off switch in the normal start up manner everything is OK. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

First of all if you haven't cleaned the dust buildup out of your iMac recently unplug all cables, open the RAM cover and vacuum the bay thoroughly. Then vacuum all ports, the DVD Drive Slot, the opening across the top of the rear panel. If you have access to compressed air now would be a good time to give all those places a good blast of air, then vacuum again.Replace the access panel. Now you are in a good condition to do a
    Reset the SMC
You can now start the system normally, hope this helps.

  • ICloud drive keeps switching itself off on my iPad 2

I have a MBP and an iMac = both on Yosemite and both working with iCloud drive OK.
But I cannot get this to work on iPad 2 with IOS 8 - with either Pages or Keynote.  It keeps telling me to set up iCloud - which I do as per instructions - but it sends me round in the same circles!
This is driving me crazy and has wasted hours!  I have signed in and out of iCloud several times and enabled iCloud Drive.  Then also down to Pages app and checked on for 'use iCloud'  Somehow - this switches itself off again after a few seconds!  How does this happen?
Why does it not stay on????????
While it is 'on' - Every time I try to use the Pages app I cannot see my iCloud drive documents - and when I try and save it then tells me to set up iCloud!
This is useless to me if it will not work as advertised!

I suggest that you do a update or reinstall of the phone software via the Update Service program. www.sonyericsson.com/updateservice
Hopefully will that solve your problem.
If you get the option to update I suggest that you select to update and also factory reset the phone.
If you only get the option to reinstall you already have the latest version, this will automatically result in a master reset too.

  • Imac switches itself On even though it's been shut down!

    Hi,
My imac switches itself on even though it has been shut down properly (i:e not sleeping)!
Any reasons why or ideas please?

    Hi Spenny,
Do you have any Apps that are not working properly or Apps that appear open from the Dock and shows the menu bar but no App window?
Have you looked here (System Profiler): Go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info > Contents > Hardware > Diagnostics... you can see what kind of Power up info is contained...
If it were me, I would go ahead and try resetting the SMC and pay careful attention to the instructions. If this does not help, I believe your machine is not actually turning off. So, if were me, I would force a shut down by holding the POWER BUTTON till machine turns off, this may take a few seconds but it will shut down and then go through resetting the SMC again....
Let us know, good luck, Rick

  • IMac turned itself off and won't fully turn back on

My iMac turned itself off this morning; all I was doing was typing, nothing intensive. It wouldn't turn back on.
I first got a wired keyboard and mouse and tried resetting the SMC. No success.
Next I took out and put back in the RAM (and it was unplugged). After repeatedly pressing the power button, I got a single beep out of it. I personally don't think it was high enough of a pitch, but I read that it might've been because the computer didn't read any RAM.
I might've again taken the RAM out, this time also unplugged. After more repeated pressing, the fans came on, but then dead again.
The third time, the fans came on and half of the dong played, but it was cut off.
The forth time the dong fully played, but a second after, it turned off again.
All of these times involved unplugging the computer for a few seconds and then repeatedly pressing the power button; I might've taken the RAM out all of the times too, but I don't remember now.
Two or so weeks ago, I did have a kernal panic while I was editing in iPhoto, and I believe it's the first for my iMac. About a month and a half ago I had a graphics problem where using exposé to show all windows caused the whole screen to become jagged 'shards' of colour (it reminded me of broken pieces of glass). While a restart fixed both of these problems, the graphic problems are not new for this iMac (though I had never had the shard effect before).
Two more little things that I'm unsure if they're related: last night, it turned itself on from sleep, but it does this every other night, so I don't think last night's special; and every time I got it to turn on, I felt that I had to give the power button just a short burst of force, as if holding it for even half a second wouldn't get it to turn on.
Does this sound like the logic board, or less expensively, the power supply? Since it attempts to come on here and there but gets cut off, what does that say with respect to the logic board?
The computer turned one year in August 08, and there's no AppleCare. Even though the warranty's gone, would Apple have any negative view if I opened it up to get my HDD? I can get the screen off with three house suction cups; my HDD was last backed up four days ago, and of course, I had just typed about 3000 words for a story I'm working on between last night and this morning.
And lastly, if I make an appointment with the Apple Store (two hours from here...) and they want to take it in, will they take out my HDD right there and give it to me if I don't take it out? Four days is so tremendous in this situation. I will not part with my HDD.

Perhaps. While I guess they're certified, I still trust Apple the most. Also, if it is a logic board problem, and it is widespread, hopefully this could be free. I don't know how a reseller would handle such a situation. I just want a file off my HDD!
I can confirm that it never really powers on unless it's been unplugged for at least a few seconds. So far, the longer it's been unplugged, the longer it stayed on. There were hours between the times I almost got into my account, and then the login window.
I again switched the MacBook and iMac's RAM, but doing this makes a senseless result. The MB's light simply stays on (no fans or screen, but when I turn it off, I do hear it 'de-whir'), and the iMac just quickly turns on and then off, as it has been after a 5-30 second unplugging session.
I guess this is the rebellion of a Revision A machine.

  • Switching itself off

    Hi
My home G5 iMac (the version before the remote control) has started turning itself off for no reason. Sometimes it would happen before the log in screen or sometimes after a few minutes.
Sometimes it will stay on for a few hours so it's all very random.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks in advance
    Rich

I started experiencing the same problem a couple weeks ago. The computer will switch itself off, randomly, for no apparent reason. I try to power it up and after several seconds will switch off. It is now working. I cleaned the vents, etc.
I also called Apple Care and was pleased to know I am under warranty for 50 more days. In the meantime, they had me reset the SMU and the accessible memory. We shall see what happens.
However, about a year ago, I couldn't even power it up. Took it in for repair. They replaced the power supply board, etc. Worked like a charm. But like I said, a couple weeks ago started having this new problem of shutting down. I'm going to make an appointment and hopefully get this resolved while it is still under warranty.
I have received some measure of comfort to learn that others have similar problems, but this is bugging me.

  • Ive had my iphone 4s since 10th april and on three seperate occassions its switched itself off completely (whilst having battery) it then wont work for around 2 days, this is very annoying and I dont know what to do as its been out for around 12hours now

I don't know why my phone keeps switching itself off, I've never dropped it, had water damage nor any other damage to it. Ive had it for around 5 months or so now and it just likes to switch itself off for around 30-40 hours then work again as though nothing happened. Although this is great as it will eventually work its  very frustrating not knowing if it will switch on again.. at the minute my phone hasnt worked for about 10-12 hours. I went in to the apple shop and they said they couldnt see me for over a week as they were fully booked, I understand that theyre busy but surely they can't expect me to go without a phone/alarm/email for that time when I am paying for it. Does anyone have any help/advice they can offer? Thanks

    Standard troubleshooting...
    1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider.  Slide to power off.  Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
    2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    3. Remove apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Swipe up on the app preview card
    - Press the home button when done.
    4. If still a problem restore with your backup.
    5. If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
    6. If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

  • My iphone4 switches itself off and wont switch back on until its plugged into the mains

Hi there, can someone help me please!?
My iphone4 white had updated ios 4.3.3 and it randomly switches itself off, has anyone else had the same problem?
It just goes to black screen and I cant manually switch it back on, only when I connect it to the mains does it come back on.
What's also really strange is that once its reset from the mains it resets the date to 01/01/1970 and the time to 01:05?
Hopefully someone out there can help!? Mark

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Good luck and let us know!

  • My iPad switches itself off when I'm on the Internet help

When I'm using my iPad on the net it switches itself off and I'm having to turn it back on again and out in my password I only want to use it properly

    Hi Lisah,
It sounds like you may have some corrupted files in the operating system -- when built-in apps and features like Camera and Siri malfunction, corrupted files are often the culprit.  There are a few things you can do to fix this -- first thing I'd recommend would be to back up your device to make sure you have all of your current data and settings saved.  Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
After backing up your data, try resetting all settings in Settings > General > Reset.  Try the camera and charger again to see if you still see the same strange behavior.  If so, there's likely a corrupted file in the iOS installation.  It's pretty easy to reinstall the operating system files to fix this -- you will need a computer with internet access.  Follow the steps in Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support to completely reinstall the iOS files and get a fresh, clean installation.
After using iTunes to restore the phone, go through the setup assistant on the phone and choose the option to Set up as a new iPhone.  Set it up as new and test the camera again -- if it works this time, that's a good sign!  After making sure it works properly, you can restore from the backup that created before doing all of the resets and restores.  This will bring your content and settings back to the phone.
    Good luck!

  • 6500 slide keeps switching itself off

Just got my shiny new 6500 slide which keeps switching itself off. The only way of switching it back on when this happens it to take the battery out, put it back in and then press the power button. It happens about once or twice a day and it seems to be when the phone is charging.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way of resetting the phone to prevent this happening?
I'd really like to fix it without the hassle of going back to the shop and trying to demonstrate a very unpredictable fault.

I would definately take your phone back and get it replaced. I had problems with my 6500 slide, every time i turned it on & off i would have to resest the time & date. I purchased my phone from an internet retailer and they exchanged it for a new one, so far i have had no problems...
