IMac & System Software Problem: FontBook

Dear Apple and to whom this may concern,
My name is Ramen/Sameul either name would do, my problem here is that my iMac doesn't have the Application called FontBook forsome reason. I really want to install fonts because I am wanting to become some kind of a Graphic Designer without this utility I am useless. I was wondering is there a way to reinstall the Software? I do not have the iMac OS X recovery install disc thingy. My iMac was giving by my cousin because he bought a new computer and he didn't want the Imac anymore so he gave me it. Could someone from the Apple community please help me with this problem. I would be very please if you do.

There are various free, inexpensive or shareware equivalents:

If you know anybody with a Mac they could email the Apple version to you - it is about 1.4 MB compressed.

• How do I update my system software without losing my older Adobe applications?

Hi. I purchased and own InDesign CS5.5, Illustrator 10.0.3 & Photoshop CS6. I want to update my iMac system software which currently runs Mac OS X version 10.6.8. But if I do this, I think it will render my expensive software unuseable.
I cannot reach a real human from Adobe to inquire about my options in this matter. Does anyone have any advice for me?
Thank you!
-Kathleen !

Yes, lots
Your suspicion is correct. If you update your OS it is almost guaranteed to keep at least some of your old Adobe apps from functioning. This is especially true if you move to Yosemite. Telling us your target OS is important, because I think much (maybe all?) of your software would still work under Lion, although many people report issues when upgrading the OS while leaving Adobe apps installed.
In your shoes, what I'd do (and what I always recommend) is that you figure out some way to keep Snow Leopard going, to house your old Adobe apps. There are two common ways to do this:
1) Take a snapshot of your entire Snow Leopard install, back it up to external disk, format your drive, install Yosemite, then install VirtualBox or other virtualization host, and run your Snow Leopard snapshot there. The performance hit on running Snow Leopard as an app inside of Yosemite is not that bad, assuming you have enough RAM. "Enough" here is 16 gigs. It's probably doable at 8, but I can't say for certain.
2) Split your disk. You can take your current hard drive and split it in half, or some other fraction. Leave Snow Leopard as-is, then install Yosemite on the other half. You can hold down a key at bootup to choose which OS you want to run.
There are plenty of other options, but it's hard to guess what you need if we don't know what other apps you are running, the OS you want to upgrade to, why you're upgrading, and so on.

I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4. We moved, and I have looked everywhere. Am I doomed to find a way to buy it? Can taking it into the Apple Store fix it? Will it be expensive THERE? I've already saved all of the files I want off of it.... I just need it to work now.

You've lost me on why you need to reinstall Tiger, when you already have all the files you wanted (which means Tiger worked perfectly fine). If you want to upgrade to Leopard, that's a different issue: your Mac needs to meet the minimum system requirements for that, which you can easily determine.
If you just want to get a replacement set of Tiger install discs, you can try calling AppleCare and see if they're able to send you a replacement set, and if not, you'll have to buy a new set yourself. You can get them on eBay, Craigslist, and HardCore Mac (http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/), although they sell it for ridiculous prices.

How to Remove MacKeeper
Given you have a backup you may want to think about erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Snow Leopard then restore your backup.

I have an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo computer and have to update my system software from Leopard V 10.5.8 to OX Snow Leopard V 10.6. Where do I find it?

Apple Store, Apple on-line store, or local computer store that sells Apple stuff.

• I bought a used iMac and I want to format and re-install the operating system however it didn't come w/operating system software.

I bought an iMac from a client and I'm concerned that the software that is on the system is not secure. I would like to remove everything and start with factory default programs and settings. The system is about 3-4 years old and there are no original operating system software discs.
How to I re-format the hard drive, and do I need to purchase an operating system for it?
Thanks.

Your best bet is to call AppleCare and order a set of original OS X Install Discs, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the computer. If you don't know what version of OS X was on the system when it originally was purchased that is the best thing to do, otherwise you're shooting in the dark. The cost is going to be in the $30-40 range I believe.
You didn't complete your profile so we have no idea where you are located or anything about your system. You can use the following link to locate AppleCare's phone number in your country.

• Bluetooth problem & restoring system software

i am running a ppc mini with built-in bluetooth module that stopped working shortly after i bought it. i have been doing a lot of research into the 'missing bluetooth' problem which may be the result of an os update, judging by what other users report.
the bluetooth symbol in the menu bar has the squiggly line through it, and clicking on it reveals 'bluetooth: not available'. to try and resurrect this bluetooth module i have tried the following: restarting, repair permissions, using disk utility, using tech tool, resetting the pmu, resetting the pram, deleting the 'system configuration' folder in ~/Library/Preferences... but it's still dead.
someone has suggested that i could restore the system software, and this is where i need some advice:
apparently the bluetooth system driver may be missing which could be reinstalled with the system restore. the mini originally shipped with 10.3.x, which i updated to 10.3.9, then last month upgraded to 10.4.x and used the recent update to reach 10.4.8, which is what i'm currently using (i haven't yet updated to 10.4.9 amidst the problems people have been reporting - i have enough problems to worry about!).
do i restore my original 10.3.x software which shipped mith my mini, or do i restore the 10.4.x software to which i have upgraded? and in either case must i use a system restore disk which came with the mini, or software which is available for download?
any help would be greatly appreciated. lee.
H: 1.4Ghz Mini 1Gb S'drive B'tooth A'port 17"; W: 2x2Ghz intel 2Gb S'drive 20" Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Have you ever considered that the problem is hardware and not software?
However, if you wish to restore your system from scratch you will have to do so from whatever system disks you have, 10.3 or a retail set of 10.4 disks which is what I am guessing you used to update to 10.4 in the first place.

• Possible to create system software disc on USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9

Is it possible to create a system software disc on a USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9?

Hopefully, those dvd's are the correct ones. If not, it's possible to download the AHT for many models from Apple, & either make a bootable drive, or replace the files in the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics folder.
see Download and run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) from a USB drive.
There are additional download details in the comments for some later models.

This is an iPad user to user forum, so you are not addressing Apple. Depending on how many user helpers are on-line, it may take several hours, or longer, to get a response.
Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

• 24" iMac Airport & Dock Problem

I received my 24" iMac 2 days ago: beautiful machine! I am having trouble with various things, though, and I don't know if these are problems with hardware, software or both. I don't want to spend a lot of time installing programs and getting the computer set up if it is defective and will need to be replaced.
First of all, the computer will connect with my 1st generation AirPort Base Station manually, but it won't reconnect automatically after sleep or restart. I have 3 Apple laptops and a G5 iMac that work fine with this Airport, so I think this is a problem with my new machine.
The computer was dodgy from the start, possibly due to poor performance of my wireless mouse. I was convinced that the data I'd transferred from an old machine was causing my problems, so I erased the HD and reinstalled the system and base software, then did a software update to get everything up to date. I also reset the PRAM and repaired permissions (does that ever really help?). That is when I discovered the mouse issue so I'm not sure if the early problems I had were all due to the mouse's inconsistent performance.
I connected to the wireless network with the initial setup of the machine after I reinstalled the system. Since then I've successfully connected through the Airport icon menu as well as Internet Connect and the troubleshooter program, but the connection lasts only until the next sleep or shutdown. I have to type in the name of the network and the password each time.
I'm running a closed network. I've entered the Airport ID to the Airport base station and as I said, it will connect manually without problems. The Network is set to join preferred networks by default and my network "Home Wireless" is the only preferred network that shows up in the list.
Next, the dock intermittently won't show up when I drag the cursor to the bottom of the screen. It displays all the time if I unclick the "Automatically hide and show the Dock" button, but I like the dock hidden when I'm not using it. This behavior is different from any of my 6 other Macs. I have plugged in a USB mouse and the dock seems to be working more reliably with it, though there have been some episodes of the dock not appearing even when I'm using the USB mouse when the wireless mouse is also connected. Could the wireless mouse be causing this problem with the dock?
The wireless mighty mouse's performance IS very spotty. Pushing the scroll button won't reliably call up the Dashboard, and the side buttons seem to either activate the Expose function too easily or not at all. In fact, there have been times when each of the buttons haven't worked properly.
Thanks for any advice. I'm hoping that replacing the wireless mouse will fix the mouse and dock problem and that the airport issue will be a software problem that will be fixed soon. I've read several others' posts relating to networking problems with the current generation if intel macs. I don't think that these are all operator dependent.

I unclicked "create a closed network" and now
everything seems to work on wake from sleep and on
restart. Is that the same as broadcasting the SSID?
Yes
If anyone else is following in my footsteps, I also
changed the security from 40 to 128 bit WEP at the
same time because if WEP is a useless scheme as I've
read, I want it to be the best darn useless scheme
it can!
Though 128bit WEP can be hacked, it takes a lot more traffic to find the key then using 40bit WEP.
Thanks iFelix. Any idea how much chance there is for
someone hacking my WEP in a residential neighborhood?
Depends on who your neighbours are...
To be honest if you lived in an apartment block I would argue you were more at risk than if you live in a detached property with only a couple of neighbours.
Should I update my wireless system? I'm happy with
the performance of the AirPort otherwise,
If you're happy and it's working, keep it as it is.
but I'm
disappointed that they don't allow an upgrade to a
more secure system and also VERY disappointed that I
can't at least create a working closed network with
my new Apple iMac.
The thing is putting your Airport base station in a brown paper bag adds as much security as creating a closed network does.
A wireless network is still broadcasting and therefore detectable regardless of whether you broadcast the SSID (closed network) or not.
A determined hacker (one who can hack 128bit WEP) will not be put off by a closed network.
As for casual users, well the 128bit WEP will stop them.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security, but that will only be possible if you upgrade your wireless router.
It could be for a variety of reasons why your Mac and original Airport don't like working with a closed network, however it does seem to happen more often when using hardware from different manufacturers.
The reason why your previous Mac didn't have this issue is that it used a different wireless chipset to your new Mac, which is the main reason for the issue you are having now.

• Frozen iMac with Network problems

I have a 21.5 inch iMac purchased around Nov'12. Three days ago, suddenly no web page could be opened. I thought it to be a problem of my router but when I found out that I was able to use the Internet perfectly from my MacBook, I restarted my iMac but the problem remained. I shut it down & then restarted it... Now it showed only a white screen with the Apple logo on it and the waiting symbol. This remained till hours until I got irritated and switched off the power supply. I switched on the next consecutive days but the problem persisted. Today fortunately my iMac started.. The home screen has come... It is able to recognise my wifi & Ethernet but does not open any web page. Going to system preferences and then to Networks is hanging the system preferences window. When I force quit it, it says to file a report to Apple.... But the problem doesn't get solved... I always believed Apple as a company whose products never hanged up or faced hardware or software issues!!!

Hello,
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions, reboot.
If you still have problems, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click OK.

• What's the safest way to reload system software

What's the safest method to reload system software on an intel iMac? My wife's iMac has been behaving erratically. I have run hardware and virus scans and found no issues. Virus software is Saphos and up to date. Problems began after a brief (5 second) power failure in the neighborhood. My Mac Pro seems fine. Both were on and connected to the internet at the time. I've run a full backup on the iMac so all important files are protected. What next?

Also, your system may have been slow because you installed antivirus software.
DO NOT reinstall Sophos Antivirus.
OS X has it's own built-in software tools to help in detecting or blocking of potential malware.
Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus is you, the user and your brain.
Don't visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.
Don't install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or sources.
Java is a vulnerability right now, if you do not need it, don't use it.
Use a browser filter and pop-up blocker
Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.
Install security updates when they become available
Educate yourself as to what threats are common and active.
In effect, use your brain as the AV filter.
Follow that advice and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won't feel the need to have to install antivirus software.

• HP Officejet 7310 software problem

I had purchased the 7310 at the beginning of June. At the time, the software install provided on the CD-Rom wouldn't completely install so I had to download an updated version from the HP site. Everything worked fine for about three weeks and then the printer display had an error message and it wouldn't power off. The machine was completely non-responsive. I went through a number of steps with HP tech support and we were unable to fix the problem. They had me ship the unit back to HP for repairs as they felt it was a hardware problem.
I received the repaired unit today and while it will print and make copies, I cannot get it to scan. I spent a hour and a half on the phone with HP tech support removing HP software and reinstalling it. We were unable to get the HP software to recognize the unit in the setup utility. I tried scanning through Acrobat and an error message comes up saying that no scanner is connected.
It seems that the problem is with HP's software. I think printing works because of the driver that is part of OS X not because of anything installed through HP's software. I find it strange that it would work fine when new but after the hardware problem was repaired, the software no longer works.
HP suggested that I call Apple to have my system software "refreshed". I don't know what that means but I don't think the problem is with my Mac.
If anyone can provide me with some advice, I would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks.
