IMac to flatscreen TV

I want to connect an iMac to a flatscreen TV. As far as I can tell, I will need a mini DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI adapter. I am getting confused with the different DVI plugs. Apparently there is DVI-D, DVI-I and a few more I think?
Anybody know exactly which ones are required and the best places to buy them?

If your TV has a DVI input, you need the "Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter" (M9321G/B).
If your TV has S-video or composite video input, you need the "Apple Mini-DVI to S-Video/Composite Adapter" (M9319G/A).

  • WEP password from my iMac G4 flatscreen not support by Time Capsule

    Hello,
I've just installed my new Time Capsule (dual band) today in combination with my new MacBook Pro. It all works fine, however I also have an 'old' iMac G4 17" flatscreen and here is the problem: although I use Mac OS X 10.4.11 I can't connect to the newly designed WiFi 802.11n network as I used to do so. When I fill in the correct WPA-personal password (the same as I use for my MacBook Pro) the button OK doesn't get highlighted so I can't click on it. It seems that my old iMac only support WEP-password security, but I can't believe that.
What do I do wrong and what should I do in order to get my old iMac G4 17" flatscreen connected to my new (Time Machine powered) wireless network?
Thanks in advance for your swift help!
    Kind regards,
    Marco

    Hi,
I've set the parameter for 'Radio Modus' for the Time Capsule on:
'Only 802.11n(5GHz) - 802.11b/g' , because I don't know the difference between all these settings.
Still I can't log in with my iMac G4 flatpanel as the AirPort software which is part of Mac OS X 10.4 by the way only supports the following modus:
    PASSWORD options"
    - No
    - WEP-password
    - WEP 40/128-bits hex
    - WEP 40/128-bits ASCII
    - LEAP
    - WPA (personal)
    - WPA (business)
    - wpa2KeyTypes
Non of the WPA password options seem to work!!??@
Do you perhaps have an idea how to configure the 'Radio Modus' for my Time Capsule and what kind of Password methodology I should use accordingly?
    Thanks!
    regards,
    Marco

  • Getting System 9 back on an imac g4 flatscreen

Hi -  I have some older Quark files  that I need to translate into pages so I can see them on the intel macbook pro.   I used to use them on my Imac g4 15 inch flatscreen that orginally shipped with dual OS back in 2002 or thereabouts.
I eventually gave the old iMac to my daughter and she still has it but doesn't use it, and somewhere along the line the Quark software got dumped as well as OS9.   I went to borrow the computer to bring up my files and found Quark gone so I thought I'd just put it back on.
Well, I have the orginal Quark 5 for OS9 plus the upgrade to Quark6 for OSX disks, so I figured it would be easy.  But when I went to put Quark 6 on, it said it had to have the old Quark 5 on there before it would upgrade me.  But when I went to put 5 on so I could upgrade it, I couldn't, since there is no Classic environment on the Mac anymore and Quark 5 is an OS9 app.   I also no longer have the original disks for the iMac.   I think they got dumped along the way somewhere as well.
Is there any solution to this?  I also cannot get access to the internet with the old iMac.  I really can't afford to by an intel version of Quark.  It's sky high, but I really need those few files.  Can anyone help me?    Thanks.

It is important to know the version of OSX that you have on the G4. Tiger (10.4) was the last iteration to support Classic environment so if your G4 CPU was 867 MHz or higher and you upgraded to Leopard then you some some work on your hands. Let's assume that you have Tiger: you need the "System Folder" from another G4 running Classic. You could do that by putting another suitable machine into Target Disk Mode then dragging the System Flder to your HDD. Another method would be to use OS 9  install disks. Good luck with that. I just did this on a G3 this week, so I can tell you that the 9 install disks are not available through  Apple Care. eBay, Craigslist , local Mac clubs and legacy buffs are a good source to try but again the search might be fruitless. Post back and I can help you along but be prepared to put in some hours because updates to bring the System Folderup to 9.2.2 will also be required. These are available for free download from Apple Support archives.

I have an iMac without an airport card. I am trying to find a thrid party solution. Does anyone know of a third party wireless usb adapter that works with my Mac?
    Linda

Hi Bill I noticed that list you posted mainly shows devices that require purchasing 3rd party drivers from companies such as ioxperts.
If you use a device that has ralink chipset you can use their drivers free of charge.

  • IMac G4 flat panel with slow mouse and ever-whirring fan

    hi there -
my lovely iMac has treated me well for some time now, but gradually over the course of many months, it decided that it will not stop running it's fan, even when it seems cool it the touch and the room is cool. The noise is loud enough to drown out quiet music, and usually kicks in if the computer has been off overnight within about 15-20 minutes of startup, never to stop. i ave tried giving her space, moving the routers etc away, but alas...
also, my mac has become prone to freezing the mouse quite often, but unplugging the mouse and replugging it seems to always fix it for a bit, but only temporarily - like 3 minutes or so sometimes, sometimes it's fine for longer after unplugging but just slow to react. and while it never used to freeze up altogether, it now quite often does.
we have a good amount of programs and music, but i don't know enough about computers to know how much is too much. we always try to keep as little running as possible - i.e. just netscape, or netscape and itunes, or just itunes. here are my computer's stats:
iMac G4 flat panel, 700MHZ Power PC G4 768 MB SD RAM
i don't know if this is helpful, but:
capacity on hard drive:38.15 GB available: 2.87
any thoughts from you experts out there would be so very greatly appreciated. i love my little mac dearly, and don't want to see her bite the dust if all it would take is a little preemptive work! please help.
    iMac g4 flatscreen   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My interpretation of the information you noted about the capacity of the
hard disk drive and the remaining free-space, is indicative of too-full a
hard disk drive so that could be the main problem. Instead of less than
10% capacity remaining unused, you need to have more like 20% free.
There also is a chance there could be bad sectors or some low-level
corruption on the hard disk drive, in part due to it being too full and
the drive is also using alot of space normally used as virtual memory
by the system, so these small remaining places not filled all the time
are being re-used and that could force the machine to cannabalize
other data stored on the hard disk drive while the OS is looking for
VM (virtual memory is automatically allotted and maintained by the
system, by using hard drive free space; all applications and utilities
on the computer use, need, and look for it.)
Other causes of kernel panics could be related to hardware or software.
Since the hard disk drive is extremely suspect, that is a place to start.
The use of an external FireWire hard disk drive to save some files to,
may be helpful; setting up a new external FW HDD may be hard since
your computer maybe too full to get and use a cloning utility (superdooper
or carbon copy cloner) but you may be able to save some items to CD
or DVD-R media; and then start moving the originals of your saved work
from the computer to the trash. A utility such as What Size can be handy
to see what files are huge, where they are (and note system files are not
the ones you need to toss; user generated ones are) and delete some.
If the hard drive has sufficient damage from over-writing data, it may
need to be replaced. If not, it may need to be totally erased and the
Disk Utility used to zero old data and reformat. This is where a working
copy (clone) on an external drive could be re-cloned back into a Mac
from an earlier capture of the healthy system, and save alot of time in
the restoration process; since a clone does not require all the installer
discs to get a full system back. It does require forethought and action
before a problem; and making backups of your system off the computer.
I make complete computer hard drive copies with a clone utility; but these
are not automatic. It is possible to set up a computer with an automatic
backup system to make ongoing clones of the complete internal drive.
The slowness of your system and peripherials is most likely the full
hard disk drive; and/or issues resulting from that. I suspect this area
is one requiring action and may be just a starting point to fix damages.

  • REMOVING  ADMINISTRATOR FROM iMac G4 Flat Screen

I have a new MacBook Pro and have given my iMac G4 Flatscreen to my wife for her personal use. I was the Original Administrator on the machine and she was a user. She is now also an Administrator and I wan't to delete all reference to my account and leave her as the only Administrator and with a clean hardrive without all my stuff clogging it up. How do I do that?

Log in from an administrator account other than the one you want to delete, and then use the Accounts pane of System Preferences to delete the unwanted account. Next, open the Users folder on the hard disk and look for a folder named Deleted Users; if you find it, delete everything inside which relates to the old account.

  • My iMac crashes every time I play a video

Everything else works fine - I can surf the internet for hours, I can chat for an eternity - but as soon as I watch a DVD, or something on YouTube, or I watch a trailer, or even if I have the visualiser on in iTunes - I get a kernal panic, or the "your computer needs to be shut down" screen.
I vaccuumed out the top and bottom vents, thinking this would help. And it did - for one day! Now it is right back to square one, so to speak.
I haven't upgraded my computer for quite a while - the memory has been in there for about a year, and this just started happening recently. I don't have anything physically connected, because everything is on an Airport network. And this was happening before I connected the Airport.
    Ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Hello,
Sorry to hear of your woes. The best thing to do is work through Dr Smoke's Kernel Panic Resolution guide (link) step-by-step. This may end up involving clearing your hard drive so back-up all your data to external drives/discs now.

  • Installing OS 9 on my iMac

I recently bought a used G4 iMac on ebay. I had been using a G3 beige, which is on its last legs. The iMac came with Tiger preinstalled, but it had password protection on some of the files. Because of that, and because I wanted to have the disk handy in case I ever had to reinstall the OS, I bought OS Tiger from Apple and performed a complete reinstall of the OS.
That's all well and good, and I now have a machine that runs beautifully, but I really want to be able to use the applications from my old G3, which was running OS 9.2. I have the CD I used to install OS 9.2 on the G3, but the iMac won't boot from it so that I can install OS 9 on the iMac.
Does anyone know how I can convince the iMac to let me install OS 9.2 on it, so that I can run my "Classic" programs?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Welp, I've had no luck.
Since the computer came with no software restore disks, I bought a new set of software restore disks specifically for the iMac G4 flatscreen. The machine boots up from the OSX installation disk just fine, but it simply will not boot from the OS 9 installation disk.
So, I called Apple and talked with a technician. He told me that I needed to buy a retail version of OS 9, and that would boot up the computer with no problems. No such luck. The computer simply refuses to boot from an OS 9 installation disk.
It recognizes the disk if I put it into the computer, so I thought that maybe if I partitioned the disk and tried to install OS 9 on a separate partition from Tiger, maybe that would work. But, when I click on the OS 9 installer, it says that "Classic is Starting." Then, after a moment, it says that Classic can't start up because the System folder on the disk (the OS 9 Install Disk) cannot be modified. So, it's a catch-22. I can't install OS 9 unless I already have OS 9 installed so that the installer can open up.
At this point, I'm about to call it quits. For some reason, the computer just won't boot from an OS 9 installation disk, and Apple's "Vintage Software" people haven't been much help, alas. I have a lot of written material on the old computer (in Corel Wordperfect format) that I can convert to Word files, so I don't have to lose those. The pictures and movies are no problem. But I hate the thought of losing access to games like TIE Fighter and Escape Velocity.
I may not have much choice though, it seems.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Trying to do a clean install on iBook G4 - Freezing

I received a G4 iBook and want to do a clean install to erase the previous owner's hard drive and add all my own applications.
When I put the disk in it asks me to use a password, which I have and the computer restarts. But just as the grey apple icon appears in the center of the screen, it slighly shifts tot he right, a line of pixels appear to burn out, and the screen is frozen. I then have to restart holding down the mouse button and the eject button to get the disk to eject. When it restarts without the disk inside the computer runs fine and the pixels are no longer "burned out"
The laptop has 10.3.9, the disk I am using to clean install is the original 10.3 disk (I was planning to update after the install)
    Can anyone help?

Does it start up normally without any problem?
You won't need to use a password if have the disk inserted and choose restart and then hold down the C key until the grey screen/apple logo appears.

  • Apple Logo Freeze at Startup

I'm on an older iMac (15" flatscreen) running 10.4.9. I shutdown to go on vacation and upon return cannot startup my Mac. It has no startup chime and merely goes to the screen with the Apple logo and no further. I've been on forum pages now for over 4 hours and have tried all suggestions from starting up from my install disk and running disk and permission repairs to complete Archive and Installs.......... Nothing. Right now I'm experiencing the blue screen of death with the spinning circle going on forever. Any help out there available?

There isn't a lot you can do from this point and you may have tried it all. I'll run through a quick list and if none of it works you'll want to see about backing up your data and then doing an erase and install. Here's the list:
    1. Disconnect all peripheral devices (including things like ethernet cables), except for the Apple keyboard and mouse, and display (if it's not a built in). Does it work? If so then it may be some conflict with the one of the devices that were connected. Try them all one by one and see if the issue repeats itself when one is connected.
    2. Remove any extra RAM that may be installed and try running it with different combinations of RAM (if you have more than one RAM stick). If you find it only happens when a certain RAM stick is installed, then replace that RAM stick.
    3. Boot the install disk and run disk utility. You said you've done this but check out this article in case you missed a step or something. It never hurts to double-check.
    4. Reset your PMU. I think this is the article for your iMac. If not search the Apple Support pages for reset PMU.
That's about all I can think of that may solve the issue. If you do need to do an erase and install then start up the computer while holding down the Option key. This takes you to the Startup Manager. If you see your hard drive in here then you should be able to use Target Disk Mode to back up your computer. If not then you'll probably want to take it in and have someone do it for you.
And here's the instructions for an Erase and Install.

  • Erasing and Installing OS X 10.4.8

    Hello,
I have a friend with an iMac (17" flatscreen w/ 60gb hdd, 256mb RAM). He upgraded from OS 9 to Jaguar and now want so install Tiger. His current version is 10.1.5.
We know that he cannot upgrade directly from 10.1.5 to 10.4.8. The Tiger discs he has are the full install discs - direct from Apple.
We have made sure that his iMac is fully compatible with Tiger and it is.
There are a couple of problems, though.
When he boots from the Tiger discs, his iMac kernal panics at the choose your language screen and won't go any further.
He has tried to erase his hdd from his older OS X discs but that option is not available from within the disk utility.
If anyone can give any suggestions as to the best way to go about this - erasing his hdd and then installing from the Tiger discs - we'd be very grateful
    Thanks,
    Annie
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

After booting from the Tiger installer DVD if the computer panics, then it may be because of insufficient RAM or defective RAM. Although 256 MBs of RAM is installed that is really not sufficient for Tiger. Furthermore, Tiger puts greater demands on RAM so if the existing RAM is not quite up to Tiger specs that may cause the kernel panic.

  • Erasing G4 hard drive?

I have an old IMac G4 flatscreen, the one with the round base, that I want to ditch. But I cannot erase the hard drive through the usual methods. I have long forgotten the password, so I can't log on. The startup disc takes me to the logon screen and I can't continue. Now I think my only option is to remove the hard disc and crush it in a vice and take everything to the recycling center in pieces. Any advice?

    No, don't do that...
If it's running a release of Mac OS X, do you have the installation disc?  Actually, it can be any disc that installs Mac OS X, that will boot that iMac.
Insert the Mac OS X installation disc and start up with the C key held down, to boot from the optical drive.  When it gets to the first Installer screen, from the menu bar select to run Disk Utility.  Depending on Mac OS X version, this will either be under Installer or Utilities.
In Disk Utility, you are securely erasing the internal drive (the entire drive).  Select the internal drive in the sidebar, not the volume indented under the drive.  Click on the Erase tab.  Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format.  Name it Macintosh HD.  Click on Security Options (or Options).  Select the option to Zero Out Data.  This option writes zeros over the entire drive and makes your data essentially unrecoverable (except maybe to VERY sophisticated equipment and specialists).  This will take a lot longer than a regular erase.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer, and run the Mac OS X installation.  (Actually, you don't have to run the installation if your goal is only to erase the hard drive.  But it be may be a good idea to make it bootable, if you there might be a new owner.)
