Imac to MBA file transfer and cable type?

transferring files from imac 2011 macbook air 2012. What cable do i need and what is the best method? MBA has thunderbolt and imac has fire port.

You need to backup the iMac using Time Machine or create a bootable clone using either Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. You will need an external HD to do this, you should have been backing up anyway and should consider yourself incredibly lucky you haven't lost any data. Backup isn't something that should be done it's somethat that MUST be done. You have lots of valuable data on your computer (music, photos, movies, financial information etc...) and without a backup plan you risk losing it completely if your computer has a HD crash!!!!!!!
Before you do anything else get yourself and external HD and backup your computer!! You should buy 2 EHD's one for the iMac and another for the new MBA.

  • Large file size and fuzzy type

I'm new at using FCE2 and composed my first short 4 minute video. It includes a still image, a PSD layered file which I discovered was quite handy, a few clips and type using the type generator. I exported it to QuickTime movie. Three observations: I was floored by the nearly 1GB size, fuzzy type, and the file on the hard drive says it's a FCE movie inclusive of the little FCE icon by the file name. I was expecting to see a QuickTime icon with file name and the type of file is a QuickTime movie. Is all this normal? I'm very disappointed in the fuzzy type. Oh, also, the still image became blurry. Why?? Just so you know, the still image was a special file 640x480 with a pixel aspect ratio of D4/D16 Anamorphic
I saved the project under a new name and redid it taking out the Photoshop image, removing it from the bin also, and the new movie exported even larger, over a gig in size. Huh??

Thanks for the reply Tom. After I posted the first time I went to the Finder, Get Info, and I saw that I could change the 'Opens with' to QuickTime and therefore it became a QuickTime file. About that Anamorphic business I read a 'how to' on dealing with images before bringing them into video. The tip says in the 'New' file dialogue box to choose 640x480 size and in the pull down menu at the bottom where you can choose the 'Pixel Aspect Ratio' it was suggest to use that Anamorphic setting. I did it but it certainly didn't look right but I went with it.
Again after I posted I looked at the Format of one of the clips and saw the size to be 720x480, Compressor is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Pixel Aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601, Anamorphic field is blank. I'm running Photoshop CS2. So I went back there and created a new blank file to use a template for dealing with stills but this time I used the Preset pull down menu and chose NTSC DV 720x480 with guides and the Pixel Aspect Ratio automatically loaded D1/DV NTSC (0.9), clicked Ok and viola, the blank file looks exactly like the Canvas in FCE. I haven't played with a still with this new setting but I will try it on the little project I'm working on.
As for viewing it, I am looking at it on my Mac flat screen. I went into QuickTime Preferences and checked the box for high quality, thank you. Thanks for reassuring me on the file size.
I also don't know what "D4/D16 Anamorphic" means.
I don't understand the fuzzy type. I'm aware these are 72 ppi files and video is not resolution dependent but rather pixel dependent. Computer monitors display at 72 ppi, televisions are higher. I have yet to complete the process of burning a DVD and playing it back on a TV. Maybe that's where I'll see the type showing up sharper.
At any rate, just dealing with this itty bitty project tells me I have a lot to learn about video, never mind learning about how to use FCE as well.

  • HELP! brand new iMac froze during firewire transfer and won't start!!!

During my setup for my brand new iMac I follwed the directions and connected my iBook via firewire to transfer my files. I noticed after a while that my iMac was frozen on "45 minutes remaining" and the blue line wasn't wavering a bit, and after over half an hour it hadn't moved. I powered off the iBook, and still nothing happened to the iMac screen--it remained frozen. I went to the guidebook and nothing seemed to work, so I powered off and on again, only to get a flashing question mark. All this and I just bought the darn thing tonight!
Help! Anyone know what happened and more importantly how to fix it?
    Thanks.
    Lindsay

it sounds like the iBook went to sleep during the transfer or at least it's hard drive spun down.
what you need to know is hope that simply booting from your install DVD will let you repair the iMac's hard drive. You could also try booting holding down the Command S keys on startup and when you get to the Single User Mode command line prompt follow the directions there for running fsck to repair your hard drive.
Do you have a FW hard drive? Can you copy files from iBook to FW and then from there to iMac?
And, it is always nice to have a FW emergency/backup hard drive. The iMac needs a different partition scheme to be bootable from FW than the iBook does, but you can create the proper partition type etc from a Tiger Installer and put OS X on FireWire, then see if you can backup and repair your iMac's hard drive.
MicroMat's TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now shipping and is compatible, Universal Binary and bootable. Always good to have some 3rd party utility handy.
If you are just starting out, you probably don't have much if anything installed yet, so you may want to just erase your iMac drive and restore to what it was. That would be the easiest if Disk Utility won't repair it.
Instead of powering off the iBook, I would have tried to force quit whatever was running, like Migration Assistant.

  • How to block file transfer and desktop sharing in Lync 2010 for Fedrated and Guest Users

    Dear,
Can anybody guide me how to restrict desktop sharing and file transfer for federated and Anonymous logins in Lync 2010.
I have tried to apply this policy through “Conferencing Policy”, but this gets applied to all users including corporate users.
    Please help in this.

    Hi,
As my knowledge, the CsFileTransferFilterConfiguration and setting in confercing policy are used to block transfer file between users. So if the policy is applied to user, the user would not transfer file with anybody. Since all Federation and Guest
Users access thought the Access Edge service, here is a update that helps to enable the control of the file transfer through the Access Edge service.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2621840
The update helps to define the file transfer policy between users on the local area network and users that connect through the Access Edge server in a Microsoft Lync Server 2010 environment. It helps protect Microsoft Lync Server 2010 deployment against
the spread of the most common forms of viruses with minimal degradation to the user experience.

  • File Transfer and Screen Sharing between MBP and MBA

I am running 10.5.6 on both. MBP is connected via ethernet to router and MBA via Airport. I can access files and Share screen of MBA while working on MBP. However I cannot log onto MBP while working on MBA. I have tried every combo in System Preferences-Sharing. What am I doing wrong? I can even exchange files with an older iBook. What gives?

    SandySpider,
Well, you're behind a router, but it is still not a great idea to "Allow all incoming connections." At any rate, it shouldn't be necessary.
Have you looked at the computer names for the two machines, etc., to make sure that you aren't confusing your network devices with conflicting identifiers? Put another way, your two computers are not named the same, are they?
Another thought: Some routers firewall between the wired and wireless networks. You may have to open a port on the router, or enable its "UPnP" capability, if it has one. Have you tried connecting the Macbook Pro wirelessly, and did it make any difference?

  • Migrant assistant - iMac froze upon file transfer complete

Upon completion of files, applications transfer, got a message both on MacBook Pro and iMac computers, being MacBook Pro my source and the iMac the destination ccomputer.
On both computers got the messag: ´Your information has been transfered succesfully´
However, when trying to view my files and all information, MOUSE AND KEYBOARD ARE NOT RESPONDING.
It is frozen and Not sure if I should a forced shut down by pressing the power button for a few seconds???
    Any thoughts
    Thanks

    Thanks Don.
Uopn further thinking, There may be a conflict because on both computers I have created a user with the same name.
I remember when I first turned on the new iMac computer, it prompted me for migrant assistant and I skipped that step since I did not have an ethernet cable then.
Next I created the user with the same name as my MacBook Pro,
Next updated the iMac with the latest Mac OS X Version 10.7.5
and after that is when I started with migrant assistant through all the steps until the iMac mouse froze.
So I will follow your advise.
    Thanks.

  • Setup Assistant fails during file transfer and loops back to the beginnig

I have a PPC G5 running 10.4.11 and just bought an Intel-based MacBook Pro. (I haven’t gotten it to fully start up yet, so I’m not sure about the OS.)
I've tried to use the Setup Assistant to migrate my files and applications from my desktop to the laptop, but when I get to the Transfer Files option, the Users, Applications Folder, and Files and Folders options never finish calculating. Everytime I hit Transfer, a black-and-white wheel appears for less than a second then disappears, and Setup Assistant loops back to the beginning, where I get the multilingual welcome messages and bad music. Or, if I do nothing and wait for the Transfer Files step to calculate, Setup Assistant still just loops back to the beginning.
I’ve tried the options for transferring from another Mac and from another volume. I’ve tried copying from the G5 in Target Disk Mode and tried copying from a cloned firewire hard drive. I’ve tried using the firewire 400 and 800 ports, different cables. I’ve run DiskWarrior on the G5 and the cloned disc to make sure no disc errors hung up the process. I tried booting into Safe Mode and following that protocol, though it seemed to address a different issue than the one I’m experiencing.
Any ideas about what I can do? I’d rather do this in Setup Assistant than Migration Assistant, and I really don’t relish the idea of reinstalling all the software I have on the G5 onto the MacBook Pro. (Logic, for example, takes forever to install.)
    Let me know!

Even if it's a demo, it's unlikely it's got 10.5 on it. Maybe 10.6. I've used the 10.6 SA from Leopard, which ran perfectly with no problems. As for MA, here's one way to go about it, if you can't finish with SA. (Thanks to MonkeyBoy at XYMer's)
If you choose to use the migration assistant after installing SL to migrate settings over from Tiger, it'll copy over all your data intact from Tiger, as well as use the same account names & passwords.
What I typically do is choose a dummy name during the installation, then use MA to import the "real" accounts from the old install. After I'm satisfied MA moved over the accounts properly (I've logged into them and used them for a few hours/days and generally feel satisfied with the lack of crashes and similarly "odd" events) then I delete the dummy account.

  • File Download and Mime-Types

I have some files (txt, xls, rtf, pdf) that need to be downloaded from our site. I
have an http link to the files on the web page. I've set mime-types for each file
type in web.xml for that web app. I'm using WLS 6sp2 on Windows 2K. I'm using an
MVC model for the application with a Controller servlet. Every time anyone tries
to click on the link and download it, the Contorller kicks them to a default page.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

Go to IIS Management console. At the server level, go to MIME Types. Add a new MIME type:
    File name extension:
    .mp4
    MIME type:
    video/mp4
Restart IIS (can't remember if this is required).

  • UCMA 4 and back to backing a file transfer request

OK, I know that file transfer isn't technically supported on UCMA 4.0, but I wanted to take another look at it and see whether there was a way to b2b a file transfer request. After all, there's no reason that it shouldn't work if the messaging is correct,
right? The scenario I have is A <-b2b-> app <-b2b->B.  I have an IM conversation going on between A and B, so now I'm trying to set it up so that A can send a file to B.
So far I've extended the platform to accept file transfer requests by creating my own call and factory classes, and then registering them using RegisterPlatformExtension.  This means that when A sends a file, the INVITE gets delivered to my application.
Now I'm taking that INVITE and creating a new b2b call.  A file transfer request looks something like this:
    TL_INFO(TF_PROTOCOL) [0]16A8.4B28::02/10/2015-19:53:05.007.001d492f (SIPStack,SIPAdminLog::ProtocolRecord::Flush:ProtocolRecord.cpp(265))[3939761282] $$begin_record

I've got my b2bed invite looking almost identical to the original invite by creating a custom MIME type on the CallEstablishOptions for the back to back call using something like this:
    Regex r = new Regex(@"^((.|\n)*)(\<request)((.|\n)*)(request\>)((.|\n)*)$");
    Match m=r.Match(args.RequestData.GetMessageBodyString());
    content=string.Format("Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable\r\n{0}{1}{2}",m.Groups[3],m.Groups[4],m.Groups[6]);
    opt.CustomMimeParts.Add(new MimePartContentDescription(new ContentType("application/ms-filetransfer+xml"),System.Text.ASCIIEncoding.UTF8.GetBytes(content)));
    opt.CustomMimeParts[0].ContentDispositionHeader = new SignalingHeader("Content-Disposition", "render; handling=optional");
So far the only differences I can see in my outbound message vs the original SDP are that the Content-Transfer-Encoding might not be seen as a header (since the SignalingHeaders property on the MimePartContentDescription is read only), and the Content-Transfer-Encoding
on the first MIME part (created by the BackToBackCall) is missing (even though I specified it on the PassThroughHeaders).  Even with all of this though, I still get a 488 on client B when I attempt the transfer (even though the invite goes through).
What I'm wondering though, is whether there's any way at all to get this working the way I'd expect, where a file gets transferred directly between A and B, without my bot having to receive it first.  The other approach I've looked at is binding my
own media provider class to customize the SDP, but if this MIME part approach isn't going to work, then I have a feeling the media provider won't work either.
Any suggestions on where to look next?
    Thanks!
    Chris

    Chris,
I am trying to do something similar to this and from what I have read and in talking to MS is that you need to extend the Call and Flow class which it looks like you have been able to do. Could I bother you to share what you have written? Maybe we can help
each other out on this. I am basically trying to create an application that will be able to capture a file transfer and save it, then send the original request on to the intended recipient.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

  • Can I really use iCloud to easily transfer and synch Mac and PC files on several devices - including my iPad and PCs?

    Hello Everyone
I am a novice iPad User because of 2 reasons, which are the only reasons I use my PCs at all!! The first reason is because of the great difficulty, almost impossibility, I have in getting files (Mac and PC - Msoft/Lotus) to tranfer and synch via the internet between my iPad and home & work laptop. Without going into too much detail will iCloud (and iTunes) solve this file transfer and synch problem?
Secondly I have some e-mail issues when using different ISPs, but this question can wait until the other (above) has been solved - if this is possible.
If there is anyone who can advise me on iCloud/iTunes I would be most grateful.
    Thanks

With a new way to share iWork documents between your devices using iCloud, the iWork.com public beta service will no longer be available. As of July 31, 2012, you will no longer be able to access your documents on the iWork.com site or view them on the web.

You can't do that, but that isn't any different from any other type of document (with the exception of photos) with dropbox on an iOS device, that's a limitation of the dropbox app, not of iCloud. That's not the same as iWork not working with dropbox which is what you stated originally.

  • TC hangs during files transfer

    Hello,
Brand new Time Capsule 2 TB. Everything works until I transfered files from my iMac to the TC. The TC hangs (during the file transfer) and needs to be reboot - not very easy, I tried maybe 20 times and then it worked - then it needs to be reconfigured.
I tried once again, transfering files (other files) from the Mac and the TC hangs again.
Strange, because I used my first TC (died last week, 18 months after I bought it) in the same way and I did transfer (in many months) lots of TB (maybe 5 to 10 GB a day) to the internal disk of the TC and to 3 externals drives (connected to the TC).
Is anyone suffering the same probleme?
Thanks for your time and best regards from sunny Switzerland
Message was edited by: Michel Schweizer

I have exactly the same problem on both my MBA & iMac yet my Mac Mini works like a dream
Just purchased the 2TB TC & 27inch iMac
Have ensured all are using the new Airport Utility version that came with the TC
MBA running 10.6.1 hangs between 1.6 & 2.2 MB of transfer.
iMac running 10.6.2 hangs after 1.6 MB transfer.
Mac Mini running 10.6 completes albeit slower than I would like however only using g rather than n
Both MBA & iMac using n - after they hang I get a server connections interrupted error which you can choose ignore or disconnect all
Internet / Browsing works perfectly even when the file has hung and I have chosen disconnect all
A quick refresh of the Airport off and on brings back the TC to be able to expand the file structure again and I can then try again.
Called Apple support today - they put me on hold twice for up to 5 mins each time as need to check with advanced support, mobile dropped out and they didn't ring back like they promised - will try again tomorrow.
If I find a solution be sure to let you know.
Biggest concern from reading all these forums is once I get a stable file transfer I will have to deal with terribly slow speeds over wifi.
Not to mention the incredibly slow speeds when a usb flash is plugged directly in the back of the TC
