IMac to replace my old G4 PowerPC ?

This may be a often asked question but I cannot locate an answer that satisfies my particular needs.
First, this is how I use my setup: I currently work on a G4 1.25 Dual PowerPC (mirror doors) with 1.25 GB RAM and an 80GB harddrive. I have need for a larger harddrive (I also use an external 250 GB drive) and maybe a little more RAM although since I started using Macs with a IIsi and only 17MBs of RAM my 1.25 GB works pretty well for me. I am a print designer and rely heavily on Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and QuarkXpress. I plan on upgrading to Adobe CS3 and would like to take advantage of the application's speed on an Intel Mac. I do not play video games or edit movies, etc. I am merely a professional print designer. I do use my computer for all of my music listening and for watching DVDs though. Another reason I wish to upgrade is to pass along my G4 to my 6 year old to play with. She's currently using my even older G4 with 0S9.
My question is this: Would a purchase of the new 24 inch iMac 2.16 Ghz with 2MB of RAM be a noticable improvement on what I currently use? If this seems like a silly question I only ask it because I recall from years past that all reviews advised professional designers away from the iMacs and instead to the PowerPCs. The main appeal of the iMac for me is the cheaper price and having everything all in one box instead of all over my office. As I stated above, I haven't really taken advantage of the upgrade possibilty to my G4 and can't see a time when I would similarly upgrade a new MacPro (or whatever the new towers are called). I'm just nervous that an iMac is a "toy" and would not be enough machine for my use. Am I misinformed?
Thanks to anyone who read my lengthy diatribe and thanks to all who can shed some light on my dilemma.
Steve
G4 1.25 Dual (Mirror door)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   80GB HD, 1.25GB RAM

Hi Bryan, thanks for responding. To answer your questions: My G4 is a 1.25 Ghz Dual processor with 1MB L3 cache per processor. I currently use a 20 inch Apple monitor. And no one has actually told me that Macs were toys but I recall that early reviews of iMacs in the past have often steered graphic designers away from them and towards the tower models, and from this I inferred that iMacs were not a good choice for editing images and putting together 300 page layouts in QuarkXpress but more for a home use for web browsing, email, etc. I'm sure my bias against iMacs is that everyone I have ever known that owned one was not a graphic designer but rather someone who just wanted a home computer for tinkering around with.
But I'm undecided since the new iMacs appear to be far superior to my G4 at its base level. Like I said, I've only upgraded the RAM to 1.25 and while I'd like more to run mulitple applications without lags, it is fine for now. Especially considering my first Mac was a IIsi with only 17MB of RAM.
I guess my question is would the 24 inch (or even the newest 20 inch) iMac be a noticeable improvement over my G4 in terms of performance. I just don't want to lay the dough out for a new iMac and find my work experience suffers. On the surface the specs of the iMac look far superior to my G4 but since I've never used an iMac in a professional environment I wanted some feedback.
Thanks.
Steve

Thank you for your suggestions. I downloaded a more recent version of Twain, but this didn't help. I also tried closing and opening Photo Shop and restarting my computer without success. Reinstalling Photo Shop sounds like a very promising solution, but I'm  not sure I will do it. In the meantime I can scan items using a printer program. These scans open in Photo Shop. It is an extra step.

Go to the airport utility and erase the TC disk.. a quick erase is fine and takes less than 1min usually.
A one pass erase takes several hours depending on how big the hard disk is.. but is somewhat safer in that it tests the drive condition. I normally don't bother for a TM backup.
When you start over you should be able to fit both backups on the TC.. assuming the disk is 2x larger at least than the space used on both the MB and the iMac.
If not you can also add a USB drive to the TC, and use that for one of the computers.
The slowest one is best.. as USB is slow.. but fast enough for wireless you won't notice much.

No. Wiping the HD will erase the OS on it.

  • I updated to Firefox 4 and it will not work so I can not get on line and it replaced the old firefox so I also lost all my bookmarks. I need them back. How do I get them?

I have a Mc g5 with the 10.4.11 operating system. Your site is my home page and it kept bugging me to update to the firefox 4. So I did now when I try to get on it tells me that that "I can not open this application because it is not supported on this system". It replaced the old firefox that I had so I can not open that. I have no way to get to my book marks and I need them. Let me know how to get back to my old firefox and book marks.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

I have an imac 27" 6 months old. When i turn it on after 20-25 mnts the screen gets vapourized. After an hour it gets cleared. How serious is it ?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane and get it repaired/replaced. I had the display on my 27" iMac go south three months after buying it and they replaced it due to a similar fault. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • How to replace my old 500GB TC with dual band 2TB TC on existing network

I bought a new 2TB Time Capsule to replace the old 500Gb. I have had a network set up long ago but the iMacs, Apple TV are on ethernet and MBP uses WiFi as well as my Android phone. I can't remember the order of dismantling the old TC and replacing with the new and keeping my network all the same as far as password etc. Bob Timmons info is awesome for adding the 500GB TC back with ethernet as extra backup space. I really need the steps to take to replace with my 2TB TC and have a smooth transition. We have photos galore on Aperture and iPhoto ergo the large drive. Thanks

I shall not be saving any backups from the old 500GB TC so I need to erase that right?
If you are absolutely sure that there is nothing on the old TC that you want saved, then by all means erasing the drive will make the space available for other things like file sharing ... as the old TC's internal drive is still available even when the TC is reconfigured as a bridge. In addition, you can share external USB HDDs attached to it as well. One option would be to dedicate this TC as your Network Attached Storage (NAS) device and use the new TC for the Time Machine backups.
Once you're sure you won't need to access any of the data on the old TC, you can erase it using the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the old TC > Manual Setup > Disks > Erase)

  • I have replaced my old hard drive with a new SSD drive. Can I restore a complete Time Machine backup

I have replaced my old hard drive on a MacBook Pro midyear 2010 with a new SSD drive. I have a complete system backup of my old drive in an external hard drive using Time Machine.
Questions that I would like to get answered.
    1) Can I connect my external hard drive to the macbook pro and use that to boot up my machine by pressing and holding down the Options key? Once booted up successfully, can I use Disk Utility to format the new SSD and then restore the complete time machine backup?
    2) If that is not possible, can I use my old drive which I can connect using a USB adapter and use that to boot up by following the same strategy as listed in Step#1 above?
    3) If neither options are possible, do I need to use a bootable USB drive for Mavericks OS X to boot up the machine,
I have Mavericks OS X ( 10.9.6) and I do not have a DVD of the OS.
    Any help is appreciated.

Let me first document the steps that did not work and then I will document the steps that worked.
    1) Replaced the hard drive with SSD.
    2) Connected the original hard drive using a USB adapter to the MacBook to make it behave like an external device.
    3) Powered on the machine and on hearing the chime pressed Command-R to start in recovery mode.
    4) Chose the Disk Utility option to erase and format the SSD. The format chosen was Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    5) Once the formatting was done, then clicked on the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility
    6) In the Source field, dragged my original hard drive from the left pane and placed it in the field
    7) On the destination field, choose the new SSD drive. Clicked on "Restore". Gave me a warning, accepted the warning and the restore was under way.
    8) I had 236 GB to restore so took 3.5 hours before it was done.
    9) Disconnected the external hard drive ( my original internal HDD), shut down the machine and powered on again.
    10) Heard the chime and after that it was a white screen with no Apple logo.
Was visibly upset and started thinking what my next move will be. Then tried these steps
    1) Again powered off the machine.
    2) Connected my internal HDD once more as an external drive
    3) Powered on and on hearing the chime, pressed Command-R as before
    4) Once the OS X utilities screen popped up, this time chose Install OS X
    5) Erased the contents of SSD once more and reformatted it using Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    6) Installed OS X by following the prompts.
    7) Once the OS was installed, I was presented with an option on how to transfer data to this new Mac
    8) Chose the option to move the data from my original HDD.
    9) Took another 3 hours to move the data.
    10) Removed the original HDD once the transfer was complete, powered down the machine and started it once more.
    11) Booted successfully and all my content is now accessible on the new SSD.
Moral of the story - It is the spirit that counts.

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • I can't replace an old version of Firefox with a new one that I just downloaded. It says I don't have permissions to do so, and the old version can't trashed.

I've downloaded the new version, and when I go to drag the Firefox icon into the Applications folder, I'm prompted to replace the old version. When I do, it says, "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to modify 'Firefox'." I've looked everywhere, and every help forum says to just drag Firefox into the Trash. I've tried that, and it says that Firefox can't be trashed. I don't know if this means anything or not, but there is a small lock in the bottom left of the Firefox icon in my dock.

Try to drag the current Firefox application to the trash if you can't replace it.

  • How can i start a new user profile service in ordre to replace an old one ?

    hi
i create a new user profile service in ordre to replace an old one
when i use : Get-SPServiceApplication i can see that hi is created but
when i use Get-SPServiceInstance i can see it i can see only the old one

    Hi,
The Get-SPServiceInstance returns the services instance for a specific server or the entire farm. The service instance GUID is unique to every farm and cannot be changed.
For starting a fresh with the User Profile Service configuration, you can unprovision and re-provision the User Profile Service:

No. The purchase history is tied to your iTunes store account.
Maybe there is a different way to achieve your objective. Why do you think you need to change your account name?
