Imac to television problems

Hi there,
Basically I've been trying to hook my Imac up to my TV to use as a secondary monitor.
The TV is a samsung series 5
I am using a minidvi > hdmi adapter then a hdmi lead from there.
Will the version of OS i am using affect it
The problem is basically it won't display, let me go abit more in depth.
The imac detects that the tv is connected, in system preferences > display > gather windows, it brings up a secondary monitor menu, which it again recognises as a samsung. This surely means that some information is being fed to and from the two. It also lets me drag things off the screen and move onto the secondary monitor as if it was there.
The problem is that the tv won't detect anything is being played through the hmdi, "source not detected".
I was wondering if this was something on the imac I need to set up (Hz, resolution, anything ticked unticked) or whether it's something at the other end.
Thanks in advance for any help I get!

The new 27" iMacs have a mini-DisplayPort (m-DP), so you will need an adapter. The m-DP does not carry audio, just video, so you will need a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male/Toslink Audio to HDMI Female Converting Adapter from Monoprice. Otherwise you would need to get a m-DP to HDMI adapter to use your HDMI cable and also run a second cable just to get the audio from your iMac to the TV.
BTW, a 27" iMac should not be running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6, are you sure that it is not Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.1 or .2?

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • Frozen iMac with Network problems

I have a 21.5 inch iMac purchased around Nov'12. Three days ago, suddenly no web page could be opened. I thought it to be a problem of my router but when I found out that I was able to use the Internet perfectly from my MacBook, I restarted my iMac but the problem remained. I shut it down & then restarted it... Now it showed only a white screen with the Apple logo on it and the waiting symbol. This remained till hours until I got irritated and switched off the power supply. I switched on the next consecutive days but the problem persisted. Today fortunately my iMac started.. The home screen has come... It is able to recognise my wifi & Ethernet but does not open any web page. Going to system preferences and then to Networks is hanging the system preferences window. When I force quit it, it says to file a report to Apple.... But the problem doesn't get solved... I always believed Apple as a company whose products never hanged up or faced hardware or software issues!!!

    Hello,
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions, reboot.
If you still have problems, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.

i have a new iMac but having problems installing final cut express 4 from old macbook pro ?

FCE was discontinued nearly 3 years ago and is no longer supported.
I don't know whether it's possible to install it on Mavericks and if you do it may not perform properly.
Final Cut pro X and iMovie are the only Apple apps that are supported.

  • What is the technical 'cause' of the infamous iMac black screen problem?

Can anybody shed some light on what technical malfunction exactly causes the infamous iMac black screen problem? The common solution seems to be a logic board replacement. But what exactly is broken on the logic board? Is it the Geforce chip? Some kind of external driver circuitry? Or something completely different?

I was referring to the many problems also described in this thread (and also in many other places):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196774&tstart=0
In specific I am referring to machines where all of this applies:
    - internal monitor stays black after power-on
    - computer boots normally
    - external display works normally
    - internal display backlight works and can be adjusted in brightness, but all pixels are black
    - PRAM reset doesn't help
    - NVRAM reset doesn't help
    - PMU reset doesn't help
    - reinstalling OS / booting from CD doesn't help
    - machines with this problem sent to repair come back with a replaced logic board
I'm looking for more information on the technical cause of the exact problem as stated above. So I can attempt to repair my iMac

  • 2 month old 21.5" iMac with 2 problems starting today.

I bought this iMac on September 14th of this year. Today it was having a hard time connecting to my wireless network. My Macbook Pro had no problems at all. I am not entirely sure that this is a computer problem because it was able to scan and find other networks in the neighbourhood, but my own that is just in the living room didn't show up at all. When it did show up it would just disappear a few minutes later.
The second issue has to do with the iMac turning off on its own. I would leave my room for about 30-40 minutes to eat or watch television, come back, and it would be off. I would have to start it up via the power button on the back. I ran the AHT thingie and it said no problems. I was wondering what I should try next before I bring this baby over to the apple store.
    Thanks so much!

You have 90 days of free AppleCare phone support. This sounds like the perfect time to use it, they're open M-Saturday during normal business hours and the number is in your owners manual.

  • Mini-DVI to Video adapter + Widescreen CRT Television problem...

The problem is that in the resolution list in Display-tab for the second display, which is PAL TV, have no resolutions for WIDESCREEN TV. Only resolutions are 640x480, 720x480, 720x576, 800x600 and 1024x768.
Is this a OS related or is there different adapters to iMac 24 and iMac 20? The adapter which I now have is lent from my friend and he have iMac 20.
How this even can be an issue to MAC, because this could be done easily on PC. I just got my first Mac and I love it but this kind of problems I even couldn't imagine.

My 27" flat screen TV added some 1220x720 selections to choose from. Go to the "NTSC/PAL" display perference panel and click the "Detect Displays."
From experence I have never been able to really use the TV as a true second display. Although it really does work quite well for showing DVD movie's, Home movie's, iPhoto slideshows, MS Word PowerPoint or anything FrontRow.
For quicker access to the Display Preferences check the "Show displays in menu bar" This places a display icon on the menu bar for one click access to resolution list and preferences for both displays.

  • IMac EFI update problems

My Mid 2011 iMac 27" i7 will no longer start after the latest EFI update.
I decided to perform some system updated on my iMac and after installing 10.7.3, I rechecked and it found the EFI update and one other update. They were both pretty small (the largest was 3.6MB), so I decided to proceed prior to getting back to business with my system.
After downloading the updates (took about 5 seconds), the machine proceeded to restart. There was a loud beep prior to the system restart chime after which it went to the grey-white apple startup screen with the spinning wheel.
    And it stayed there.
After 35 minutes with no discernable progress, I decided something must be wrong. This system normally takes about 30 seconds to boot from a cold state (it's running on an OWC SSD) or maybe a minute after updates. So I held the power button to reboot. But it keeps going to the same state. I tried to reboot to a different internal drive holding the option key, but the same thing happens.
    System Specs:
    iMac 27" i7 3.4 Ghz (mid 2011) 12G Ram
    Internal 1TB Apple HD
Internal OWC SSD 240G (main startup drive)
    Here are my questions:
    1. How do I recover from this?
    2. Is anyone else running into this problem?
    3. How long do the EFI updates normally take?
    4. Shouldn't there be some sort of "progress bar" to indicate something is going on during this process? Or, if not, then perhaps a "WARNING!! This process will take up to two hours, during which you will receive no discernable feedback. Do not interrupt the process until more than 24 hours have passed with the spinning ball."
    Thanks for your help.
    Jason Cox
P.S. I think this is my last iMac EFI update. After my last iMac received an EFI update (2009 model 24" iMac), it became ultra-flakey and started corrupting HD's. It never worked the same after that. This machine was working PERFECTLY before the update.

I don't have the link to that thread, but here is how to do it:
    To reset the SMC:
    Shut down your system.
Unplug all the accessories from the system
Unplug the power cord from the iMac and leave it unplugged for at least 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord. Wait another fifteen seconds and restart the computer.
    To Reset the PRAM:
On startup, hold down these keys at the same time (must start before the grey screen comes up): command option  p  r
    Hope that helps.

I agree with John. Some of the worst things you have installed are:
    Un-install Sophos.
    Sophos Un-install
SIMBL is a sytem hack. Try removing it.
    SIMBL Uninstall

My system was perfectly stable and smooth and all (10.5.6) and suddenly app start to freeze (in general when i want to 'save as' before the window appear) or the system freeze while switching user, sometimes it freeze when the puter is sleeping when it wake up.
It started with Indesign but well it seems it can be any app.
    I have 3 external HD : 1 USB2, 1FW and 1 FW800.
I have weird console message :

The last time i had the problem i made a complet reinstall of leopard and all applications took ages and it change dnothing , so i'm not goin in that again. For some crazy reason i have the feeling the problem is related to my HD.
    Any help very apreciated.
NB. Why there is no console messages dictionary ?

Whether it is a physical problem or a file structure problem disconnecting the drives for a day or two, if you can, will help isolate the cause of your problem. If the problems goes away then you know that one of the drives is the cause. You can then plug them in one at a time. Use the first one for a while and se what happens. If all goes well hook up another, if all goes well hook up the third. This way if you start having a problem you will know which drive is causing it.
You can also use Disk Utility which is on your Mac in the Utilities folder to check the drives and see if there is a problem.

  • Why sometimes my iMac has a problem at the start? With impossibility to access the wi-fi

I bought this iMac in the Apple Store in Bologna the 10th, and three days later it started to have this problem. Sometimes when I launch it, it appears a loading bar, and after a selection of the user (i do have only one user!), then, it doesn't recognise any Wi-Fi network, and I am obliged to restart the iMac. At the restart, it all goes perfectly. HELP

  • 1st series iMac G5: Booting problems, kernel panics, waking from sleep...

Specifications of the iMac described: 1.8 Ghz, 1GB, 80GB, 64 Mb Nvidia VRAM, Airport, 10.5.5
Back in August 2004 my dad bought us kids an iMac G5 for ‘family use’. It had a fresh install of 10.3.5 on it and compared to the (1999) iMac G3 it replaced it was amazingly fast.
The iMac never showed any signs of probable issues, until we decided to upgrade to Leopard in January 2008. Initially, this upgrade was only meant to be able to sync with the latest iPod nano (who demanded a newer version of iTunes).
After the installation the first thing I noticed was a high CPU usage, the machine seemed slower than ever and that with 1 Gb of RAM (the minimum sys. req. for Leopard are 512 Mb of RAM). Anyway, then the real thing started, it wouldn’t turn on anymore. We brought it to an Authorized Apple Reseller, the Tech department said the Logic board had failed. The costs of the fix weren’t the worth the computer anymore, so...end of story. The iMac was indeed one of the bad series, although it hadn’t any swollen capacitors.
My dad already made up his mind and bought himself a Macbook. He then told me that if I was able to get the broken iMac fixed, I could keep it. And so, I bought an ‘as-is’ logic board on Ebay. Last weekend I installed it, and it actually seemed to work! Yet, the problems are during the startup: the first thing I see is a screen full with horizontal lines flickering all the time, like an old TV with bad signal. Mostly it won’t boot and I get the message to restart the computer (kernel panic, I got dozens of logs already!). Sometimes it got stuck during booting (grey apple screen with gear in the middle) making the fans go crazy (after a while) and sounding what others describe as a ‘jetliner taking off’ sound. Sometimes the screen remains black. Generally it takes me 5 to 10 minutes to start up properly. Maybe it’s just me but it seems like when the computer has warmed up a little (by turning on and off on and on) starting up gets smoother. I mean the startup screen suffers from less horizontal flickering lines.
During the use of Leopard, I again get high CPU usage, especially when I use multiple programs at the same time, or when starting multiple programs. My iStat Pro said once that the fans were running at 4700 rpm and the heat of the CPU was about 70 Celsius. If I really want to **** my iMac off I should play a racing game. That just totally freaks him out! These problems could probably be solved by adding more RAM. Right?
The iMac also has a sleep problem. Sometimes after lets say an hour or so, you can’t get it out of sleep mode (by manipulating keyboard and/or mouse, the sleep light stops, but the screen stays off --> only solution is to restart). What happened to me once was that it slept so long that it just got into a deep sleep by turning itself off completely!
Here’s a list of what I tried so far:
    - Disk Utility: Resetting the permissions, no problems were found.
    - Resetting the SMU, both on the logic board itself as by pressing the power button 5 - 8 seconds, no improvements.
    - Resetting the PRAM, no improvements.
    - Did the Hardware test of the original install CD, nothing was found, all good.
    - Did Archive and Instal, this actually messed my system entirely, cause it wouldn't boot at all and when starting up from the Leopard installation DVD it wouldn't recognize the Macintosh HD.
    - Did Archive and Instal with the original disks, this disk did recognize Macintosh HD and so I installed the original system, 10.3. Booting problems and those flickering lines are still there though.
Next phase will be erase and install, but first I want to know what you guys think about all this.
Oh eh, One more thing; The guys at Applecare (phone support) told me that the replaced logic board was also out of warranty and so they couldn’t help me. But as the man on the phone was kind, he told me to go look for a special ‘driver’ on the net. He said that the driver should be able to resolve some of the issues described. He said that I had to give in the name of the LB on google and look for results. Is this bogus? Because I haven’t found anything useful on google so far. What’s the name (rather than a number) of the LB in the first place?
I hope you guys can give me some answers. I'm kinda desperate. But I still feel there's hope...

The symptoms of a flakey power supply are sleep problems and you have done all the right things as far as resetting the SMU and PRAM. Your CPU usage can be tracked by going to Utilities>Activity Monitor - look and see what is hogging the memory. The flickering lines could also be an optical system going south.
The other thing you can do is run DiskWarrior or TechToolPro to see if you have corrupted directories. Preferential Treatment will let you check for corrupted preferences.

  • 1st gen imac g5 graphics problems

    Hi-
I have a first gen 1.8ghz 20" imac g5. About a year and a half ago, the mother board was replaced because of the exploding resistors. Recently, the screen has started intermittently getting pixelly in spots (like it did pre-mo-bo replacement) and then freezing (which is new). It happens every day or two, or sometimes within 10 minutes of booting. It seems to happen more quickly when Safari is up strangely enough...
I took it to the apple store this weekend and the genius there said that the resistors were not exploding and that the mother board looked good. I haven't seen any drivers for the graphics card available. Wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if there is anything that can be done. A shame to have to do away with this thing...

    HI,
I too have a 1st gen iMac G5 20". It too recently started showing artifacts on the screen. For example when moving a window parts of the screen would get messed up. The problem became worse to the point where it would get stuck on a blue screen during boot (mouse and pointer still working). I took the cover off and saw three leaking capacitors on the mother board. They were in the group of 5 near the middle bottom of the board. I had them replaced, but unfortunately, this did not fix the problem or improve it in anyway. At the moment I have no idea what the problem is. Is this in anyway similar to your problem?

  • IMac display monitor problems, left side darkens and flickers

I have an iMac with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3,  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). The last year the left side of the monitor was flickering intermittingly. I didnt think much of it. Then in July, one big flicker caused the left side of the screen to darken slightly. Fortunately, my AppleCare was still in effect,. I contacted Apple and they had me zap the PRAM and also reboot into Recovery mode. The darkness was still apparent. So I took it to an authorized dealer and they fixed the display. Now tonight, one big flicker happened and I noticed that the left side had darkened a little again. I zapped the PRAM and it seems to be ok now, but I'm afraid that the same thing will soon happen. And of course the AppleCare has expired finally. Has anyone encountered this?  I have four external hard drives on a shelf right next to the display. This sounds silly, but could they be affecting the display in any way? I moved them a few feet below where they were, hoping that they werent the cause of the problem.
Any advice would be most welcome.
    Thanks!

had zapped pram not helped then I would had said that the lcd panel itself was close to the end of it's life and replacement would be required but since it did then I have no real cause to believe the issue would come back
