IMac to view live cable?

I'm a smoker so I spend a great deal of time in my garage with my late 2012 21" iMac, puffing away while my Theater Room 110" projection screen goes unwatched.  I have cable, a strong WiFi network,  two AppleTV devices (one original model with the hard drive, the second is about 3 years old), and a 55" Samsung Smart TV with "sharing".  I would like to be able to watch ANY broadcast available to me thru my cable service wirelessly on my iMac.  TWC cable offers some live programming but not local broadcasts and many other sporting events available to me inside.  I don't smoke inside so I would like to be able to view any broadcasts on my iMac.
Does anyone have a solution?  Thanks in advance for posting specific "how to" information.

Look into Elgato products.

  • External HDs not recognized by iMac when using USB cable

I just bought a new iMac & plugged in my two Western Digital 1tb drives using the supplied USB cables and neither of them are recognized by my iMac.
I've been using both of these drives with my other G5 iMac using the firewire cables & have not had any issues. I also purchased an adapter (USB -->firewire 800) and each hard drive mounts ... but neither will mount using the USB connections.
Any suggestions as to how I can get the second drive to work using the USB cable ...
    Thanks,
    Brent

+do I need to move the contents of the external drive off the unit before the partition?????+
YES! Absolutely! The partitioning process erases the drive, so you need to temporarily copy data onto your old Mac.
+how do I achieve this? I'm guessing there's a piece of hardware that I'll need to connect the two hard drives together and then feed another line into the iMac ... correct?+
All you need are firewire cables (hard drive to hard drive to iMac). See Dennis' link and the excerpt here:
+Question 7: Can FireWire devices be connected in a daisy chain?+
+Answer: Yes, and if the devices are designed according to the FireWire standard, they can be turned on and off as needed. For example, all devices don't need to be powered on to use the last device in the chain. For the best result, and to avoid overstressing the FireWire port, connect one FireWire device to the Macintosh, then add one device at a time to the chain. Avoid plugging in live power adapters into devices connected to the chain.+
And congratulations on your new iMac - you'll love it; I got mine about a month ago.

  • Baby Monitor - view live streaming video on iPhone

I am in search of a webcam (to use as a baby monitor) that I can use with my iPhone to view live streaming video from...
Can someone please recommend a webcam (ideally with a low-light setting, because babies like to sleep in the dark;) and a capable app from the app store that would help me achieve this?
    Thanks!

That is going to be a very custom app. I really doubt it will be in the app store. I understand the idea. I have a monitor myself that has video. I would have to hook up that video monitor to an input device on a computer networked in the home. For me this would entail video monitor output to a camcorder to firewire to imac. could get quite complicated. Even doing this much could encounter problems like each interface having to be set up correctly. once that is done, you might be able to use the bonjour networking to get from iphone to imac. all of this is hypothetical though. interesting scenario though

    • Only if your video camera supports it.  Depending on how your camera works, you may need to add preview software to your Mac to use this feature.
    • Alternatively, your camera may also be able to record directly into your Mac while you are monitoring the Mac's display.
    • If you are using a consumer camcorder that supports HDMI monitoring, a small HDTV might be an simpler solution than your Mac.  For an example of how this is done, see http://youtu.be/GVpSkZD6qE4.
    • The retailer who sold you your video camera may have other suggestions.
    • If you need more professional results, an external preview monitor will offer more capability on compatible cameras.

I want to use my Mac desktop as a portal for viewing my cable television via some kind of cord. Is this possible and what do I need to set this up?

It can be done with analog but not digital thanks to "good 'ol" HDCP copy protection which apple (and most other manufacturers) unfortunately respect.
So you can take the analog output from your cable box (component -- 5 cables -- if it has it but generally they all have composite -- 3 cables) and feed it into some kind of converter or into some appropriate pci card for your mac pro.  But none of them are going to let you directly use the HDMI output from the box to your computer.
Bottom line, no single cord is going to work and it will never be the higher quality digital picture you get on your tv.
Some qualification:  There are boxes that I think support hdmi input.  Look at Blackmagic.  But I still don't think you can get around the HDCP from the cable box (might depend on the kind of cable box).

  • Macbook pro 2012 as second screen for imac 2013 via thunderbolt cable

    Hello,
I was wondering wether it is possible to use my macbook as a second screen for my imac using a thunderbolt cable.
I want to use my imac as primary mac because the specs are better.
    Thanks

Most new monitors will support standard DVI and VGA connections. Some may support Mini-DVI ports. That's about all I can tell you.
As for other factors I would look at monitor reviews - as many as you can - for the size and resolutions in which you are interested. There are a lot of products out there. You might try first doing a Google search to learn more about the meanings of the various specs the manufacturers provide so you might wade through the smoke and mirrors in search of meaningful information.

just bought an imac  cannot view you tube videos keeps telling me to download adobe flash player 10 how can i fix this

    Good morning.
Apple no longer includes Flash with the new Macs.  So, if you run into things that require Flash you must, if you want to view them, go to the Adobe site and download the Flashplayer as Paul_31 suggested.
    Enjoy your day.

  • How to view live webcam that use windows media player and java

I am new to iphone and I have two live webcams that I like to go to and can't get either one on my iphone 3gs. www.ruidoso.net, view live webcam link and www.skiapache.com live webcam link. How can I get to them?? oram I just out of luck.

You've got to remember that, as powerful as the iPhone is, it's not a desktop computer. So certain things that have been designed for desktop computers may not work the same or at all. The owners of those websites probably never considered anyone wanting to view them on a phone.
The first webcam you can view on your iPhone by going to http://www.ruidosowebcam.com/camera0.jpg and manually refreshing the page to update the view. (The Java applet just refreshes the page, something they could easily have done in JavaScript for increased compatibility).
The second one I can't help with, as that one doesn't even work on my desktop computer, but WMV is a proprietary video format from Microsoft, which the iPhone doesn't play. You'd have to ask the website owners to use a more industry standard video format that the iPhone can play.

  • How do i watch movie rentals i rented on my imac but view on my apple TV

How do I watch movie rentals I rented on my iMac but view on my apple TV?

How do I watch movie rentals I rented on my iMac but view on my apple TV?
Sounded like a good question to me but nobody seemed willing to respond. So... as I had never rented a movie, I decided to test the work flow on one of the $0.99 "specials" found on iTunes. For my test, I selected "Dark House." The 943.5 MB SD movie downloaded in about 8 minutes to the "Store/Downloads" area in the  iTunes app on my older PPC computer—most likely a volatile cache area as I could not locate a physical file at the Finder level. In any case, it seems that if you select the file in the "iTunes/Downloads" tab, it appears you can play the file locally on the computer (later confirmed this). However, as I wanted to take advantage of the my ethernet connection to my main HDTV, I went to that TV2 device connected to it and checked it's local menu. Sure enough, I found the movie available in a newly added "Rentals" menu that now displayed between the "Music" and "Movies" sub-menus within my own iTunes Library menu.
Be advised that starting file takes a second or two of extra time each time the you quit/restart playback as it seems the movie must be "re-authorized" for the device each time. Further, the rental can only be played on one device at a time. That is, if you want to switch from the device to another, you must close the playback sub-menu for the current device before opening the file on an alternative device. In my case, I tested switching the movie back and forth between an TV2 device and the iTunes player.
Hope that answers your question as I plan to go and watch the move now. If nothing else, this was a learning experience for me. Quality was typical for the data rate and I had no problems viewing the content on my system. I also like the fact that chapter "descriptors" were used for this content rather than the default chapter numbers I normally use.

  • Two 1st Generation iMacs using 1 Broadband Cable connection - Best way?

    Hi guys,
I have a snow iMac (600Mhz) running 10.2.8 - I have it set up with Virgin Cable Broadband (formerly Telewest/NTL using a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem), my mum has passed us her old Tangerine iMac (400Mhz) also running 10.2.8 - I currently have both set up in one of our bedrooms, they are about 2 metres apart on seperate desks.
I have asked this to quite a few people but am getting different answers all the time so I am hoping you guys here can help in giving me a definitive answer:
What's the best way for me to get both of these iMacs on via by Cable connection? - I don't want wireless, I just want wired ethernet.
Some people are insisting I need a wired router similar to this:
    http://www.broadbandstuff.co.uk/productinfo.php?productsid=225
Whilst others are saying that I just need a switch device similar to this:
    http://www.broadbandstuff.co.uk/productinfo.php?productsid=113&osCsid=7b23b40476276b3714287fcad8b20a38
    Can anyone confirm please?
    Thanks

I know I have closed this thread off, but wanted to
    ask Alan one more question...
Did you have to recontact NTL when you got your
router to supply them with the new code on the router
before it would work?- A guy at my work has said I
will need to do this, is this correct?
    Hello IntelMacMini,
No I did not contact NTL about anything. I think you may have to do this if this is the first time you have made any connection to the internet.
I presume you already have one computer connected to the broadband modem as I had.
All I did was unplug the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer and plugged it into the internet port on router and then ran an ethernet patch cable from one of the numbered ports to the computer. Then I switched on the router and followed the instructions that came with the router until it was up and working and connected with the internet.
Then I connected a patch cable to another numbered port on the router and plugged it into the ethernet port on the second computer.
Next switched off both computers, the router and the modem in that order.
Then switched on the modem waited until all was working ( lights steady ), then the router until all the right lights were steady, then the first computer and checked that it connected to the internet, and finally the second computer and checked the connection.
With the third old g3 powerbook OS 9.2.2 I just set the TCP/IP to connect via ethernet and configure using DHCP server and plugged it in without switching anything off and it worked first time.
It sounds a bit complicated but if an old technophobe like me can do it anyone can.
    Hope this helps,
    Alan

  • Using Imac to view cable tv

I have space for one display in my space challenged abode.  I love the 27" imac and would like to connect it to my cable TV so I can take advantage of the killer display quality on the Imac.  How do I do that?

A usb tuner is the most common way to do this.  Take a look at the products offered by Elgato.

  • CCD camera to view live

    http://store.mp3car.com/CCDInfrared_Camerap/com-003.htm
Hi,I have this model CCD camera that I would like to view on the computer live.
The option to use as a web cam would be interesting as well.
I suspect I may need a USB/ fire wire adaptor to the single video Rca tap coming from the camera.
The second lead from camera is 12v. This is coming from brick in the wall.
I have had the camera hooked up to video input feed to a TV, and it really works well.
Thanks if you have info on this.

    Hello EZ Jim,
Here is what came up as an alternative from looking at the device you referred to.
It seems to be geared in my favor I believe. Here's a small tid-bit from the site's description.
EyeTV 250 Plus comes with a composite video and S-Video break-out cable. Use it to connect a set top box (one that has analog outputs) to watch cable and satellite TV on your Mac, convert videotapes to DVD, and convert analog video to iPod/iPhone/Apple TV formats. The included VHS Assistant and iPod Assistant will guide you through the setup.
Comes with EyeTV 3 software, Toast 8 Basic, and an Infrared Remote
I never got around to Toast in all it's years out there.
    http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/hybrid/product1.en.html
Then this site, but I have not explored it yet.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Miglia/TVPCISIL/
Elgato looks impressive, with dedicated device versions as the site's specialty.
I do have the Pinnacle System v9, but I assume PC version. Receipt shows $400 for some of it.
A quick look in the box, does show PC in use. It's the whole system of Show Center & PCtv USB2.
I may have to ask them just for the heck of it. Well, You did get me to dig it out.
The Show Center has option for Scart connection and switch for PAL. I did not have fun with those in Europe. Components always came apart at the huge block connection.
I really don't want to torture my old Tower PC, or older still laptop.
But, a little light came on with the thought of the newer Dual boot Macs to use what I have.
I could use an upgrade in gear anyway. If that works.
The mission continues, and Your star was well earned for the fridge .
    Cheers

  • IMac Vertical Sync Ribbon Cable

    Hey everyone,
Recently I ran into some hard drive issues with my 27 inch iMac. I purchased a replacement hard drive and installed it. Unfortunately, during the process my vertical sync ribbon cable was damaged. Is there any way to get a replacement?
    Please let me know,
    Stephen Powling

It seems like there's a fix on the iFixit website.  It also has a link to order a new cable.
