IMac turned itself off and won't fully turn back on

My iMac turned itself off this morning; all I was doing was typing, nothing intensive. It wouldn't turn back on.
I first got a wired keyboard and mouse and tried resetting the SMC. No success.
Next I took out and put back in the RAM (and it was unplugged). After repeatedly pressing the power button, I got a single beep out of it. I personally don't think it was high enough of a pitch, but I read that it might've been because the computer didn't read any RAM.
I might've again taken the RAM out, this time also unplugged. After more repeated pressing, the fans came on, but then dead again.
The third time, the fans came on and half of the dong played, but it was cut off.
The forth time the dong fully played, but a second after, it turned off again.
All of these times involved unplugging the computer for a few seconds and then repeatedly pressing the power button; I might've taken the RAM out all of the times too, but I don't remember now.
Two or so weeks ago, I did have a kernal panic while I was editing in iPhoto, and I believe it's the first for my iMac. About a month and a half ago I had a graphics problem where using exposé to show all windows caused the whole screen to become jagged 'shards' of colour (it reminded me of broken pieces of glass). While a restart fixed both of these problems, the graphic problems are not new for this iMac (though I had never had the shard effect before).
Two more little things that I'm unsure if they're related: last night, it turned itself on from sleep, but it does this every other night, so I don't think last night's special; and every time I got it to turn on, I felt that I had to give the power button just a short burst of force, as if holding it for even half a second wouldn't get it to turn on.
Does this sound like the logic board, or less expensively, the power supply? Since it attempts to come on here and there but gets cut off, what does that say with respect to the logic board?
The computer turned one year in August 08, and there's no AppleCare. Even though the warranty's gone, would Apple have any negative view if I opened it up to get my HDD? I can get the screen off with three house suction cups; my HDD was last backed up four days ago, and of course, I had just typed about 3000 words for a story I'm working on between last night and this morning.
And lastly, if I make an appointment with the Apple Store (two hours from here...) and they want to take it in, will they take out my HDD right there and give it to me if I don't take it out? Four days is so tremendous in this situation. I will not part with my HDD.

Perhaps. While I guess they're certified, I still trust Apple the most. Also, if it is a logic board problem, and it is widespread, hopefully this could be free. I don't know how a reseller would handle such a situation. I just want a file off my HDD!
I can confirm that it never really powers on unless it's been unplugged for at least a few seconds. So far, the longer it's been unplugged, the longer it stayed on. There were hours between the times I almost got into my account, and then the login window.
I again switched the MacBook and iMac's RAM, but doing this makes a senseless result. The MB's light simply stays on (no fans or screen, but when I turn it off, I do hear it 'de-whir'), and the iMac just quickly turns on and then off, as it has been after a 5-30 second unplugging session.
I guess this is the rebellion of a Revision A machine.

  • My iPhone turned itself off and won't come on or charge, after I already restarted it once

My iPhone 5s has turned itself off and won't come on or charge again I have already restarted it by holding the on/off switch and home button and it come back on and was working fine, but after an couple of hours it's turned itself back off again!! And won't let me restart it again. I don't know what's caused it as it was working fine yesterday and I hadn't dropped it or gotten it wet, what else can I do??

A phone that is turned off wont receive calls. You could try to do a couple things: plug it in (even though it is fully charged), press and hold the power button down extra hard. Press and hold the power AND home buttons extra hard. Take it to the apple store.

    Hello untech,
I see that it has been awhile since you have posted with us on the HP Forums.  Please let me take a moment to say "Welcome Back".
I see that you are having an issue with the printer shutting it self off and not powering back on.
By chance do you have the printer power cable connected to a power bar/strip?  If so, please try connecting the printers power cable directly to a wall outlet.  Here is a document that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
The printer in the document is a LaserJet printer but this document is meant for HP products in general and only uses the LaserJet as an example.
I am also going to include a document for when The HP Printer Won't Turn On or Respond When the Power Button is Pressed.
If by chance the issue is not resolved after doing the steps outlined,  I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.

I hope you have a great Monday.

My iPhone 4s turned itself off and won't turn back on. What do I do?

  • My I phone5c has turned itself off and won't turn back on,have only had it 3 weeks, any ideas anyone?

My iPhone 5c has turned itself off and won't turn back on, any ideas anyone?

    Hey Jswalker1969,
Thanks for the question. If your iPhone is not powering on, see the following troubleshooting steps:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
    1. Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    2. Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion.
    Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    3. Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    4. After at least 30 minutes, if:
                   - The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
                   - The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
                   - Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    5. If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
                   - If the display turns on, go to step 4.
                   - If the display remains black, go to next step.
    6. Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    7. If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?
    Contact Apple Support.

  • Iphone 5c turns itself off and won't turn on until plugged in

I just received my replacement iPhone 5c and it worked fine the first night, the next day, the phone turned itself off, and would not let me turn it back on. I tried the reset option by holding down the lock and the home buttons, but that did not work. my phone only turns on when it is plugged in. It then shows me that battery is lows, and then powers on ad says 100% charged.
My lower screen blinks while it is plugged in as well.....
    Any help?

You might have a bad battery. But first try recalibrating the battery gauge. Run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off and doesn't restart. Then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger. Repeat the process. If the problem remains you need a new battery.

  • My iphone 4 has turned itself off and I cant get it back on, it had a full battery before it cut off.

My Iphone 4 has just turned itself off and I cant turn it back on. It had a full battery before it cut off so its definetly not the battery, however I have found recently that the battery has been running out really quickly. any ideas what to do? Thanks

    Try resetting your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.

  • IPhone 5C - Turned itself off and won't come back on.

I have owned this phone since the day it came out (20th September) and it was fine up until a few weeks ago. It decided - frequently - to reboot itself, lines would appear on my screen and the brightness would decrease until the phone turned itself off. Soon the apple logo would appear and everything would be fine. I noticed that it would do this while I was on it while it was charging or when a lot of apps were open. I avoided doing these things, but it still would happen. Sometimes it would do it and the apple logo would not appear - I learned of the holding down the home and sleep/wake button at the same time hack, and would do that to get it back on. As time went on the problem would persist, sometimes it would take a few attempts to get the phone back on - I removed some recent apps and the phone was fine for about a week.
Last Friday the phone did it again, so I decided to factory reset/restore through iTunes and then restore my backup. For a couple of days the phone was fine, up until last night where the phone switched off - thinking this was like all the other times I did what I'd usually do. But nothing, I've left it to charge, I've attempted to restore it. When I go to restore it the apple logo appears and the process bar appears, however iTunes turns around and says that it cannot restore the phone.
I went onto here to try and attempt to have it sent back for service, I put in my IMEI number, and it said that I need to turn "Find my iPhone" off, I did that and now it says that it's still on, when it isn't!
Does anyone know what I can do? Or shall I just ring them and figure out how to send it back through that?

This happened to me yesterday. This probably isn't any use to you now, but for others with this question. This morning I took the back off of my phone, and I took the battery out and plugged it in to my laptop. It immediately lit up. We put the battery back in and restored it and it works better than ever. Not sure if this will work for all, but it worked for me!

  • TS1363 my ipod turned itself off and now it wont come back on

My ipod was fully charged & it turned itself off & now it wont came back on. What should I do? I sometimes have the same problem with my iphone3GS.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. (And there is no need to SHOUT.)

  • Randomly turns itself off, and won't restart.

OK, I know the shutdown issue can be fixed with a firmware update, but I think I might have another issue from what I have heard described in these posts.
I have had my macbook since July, so it's 5 months old and I’ve been seeing the following issues for the last 2-3 months.
I have been seeing a lot of random shutdowns (maybe every three times I sit down to use my macbook) with no error messages, fully charged with the AC adaptor plugged in. After it shuts down and I try to turn it on, it will stay on from anywhere from 10 seconds to less than one second before turning itself back off. Is this failure to power back up a different issue from the random shutdowns? They seem to correspond, because I have never had trouble powering up when properly shutdown and dormant.
I found a workaround to get booted when it is failing to restart by simply holding the power button for 5-10 seconds until the macbook beeps loudly, then I let go of the power button and it powers up ok, and I don’t see the random shutdown issue for a while.
I have not yet applied the firmware update; will this fix both of my issues? I'm worried that if the random shutdowns stop, that there might still be a hardware issue (not powering up) on my macbook that won't surface until I am out of warranty.
I also heard that a friend of a friend had this same problem and was given a replacement macbook, which makes me think I have a more severe problem.
    Any ideas?
Mac OS X (10.4.7)   macbook ultimate

Well... the issue is they may not have been seated correctly to start with... not so much that they would have worked loose. Actually, if you've ever tried to put RAM into a MacBook, you'll see that they're certainly not loose. Your main problem certainly seems like the random shutdown issue. Your start up issue is related to the same thing. Your MacBook gets a funky signal from a temperature sensor and shuts down. It doesn't want to come back on right away because it thinks the temperature issue has not been resolved. When you hold the power button in and get the beep, you are locking your MacBook at a slower speed which has seemed to work for some people temporarily. The firmware update should resolve your problem.
NOTE: If you know your machine will run for a few minutes under certain circumstances, make sure it's under those circumstances that you update the firmware. You don't want to have a random shutdown during a firmware update.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
