Imac turns itself on everyday at 7pm with no scheduled start up

In the energy saver schedule there is no startup time.
The restart after power fail is unchecked.
Everyday at 7pm it just turns on. NOT wakes up, it actually turns on and boots up. My time zone is US central (-6 GMT).

  • IMac turned itself off and won't fully turn back on

My iMac turned itself off this morning; all I was doing was typing, nothing intensive. It wouldn't turn back on.
I first got a wired keyboard and mouse and tried resetting the SMC. No success.
Next I took out and put back in the RAM (and it was unplugged). After repeatedly pressing the power button, I got a single beep out of it. I personally don't think it was high enough of a pitch, but I read that it might've been because the computer didn't read any RAM.
I might've again taken the RAM out, this time also unplugged. After more repeated pressing, the fans came on, but then dead again.
The third time, the fans came on and half of the dong played, but it was cut off.
The forth time the dong fully played, but a second after, it turned off again.
All of these times involved unplugging the computer for a few seconds and then repeatedly pressing the power button; I might've taken the RAM out all of the times too, but I don't remember now.
Two or so weeks ago, I did have a kernal panic while I was editing in iPhoto, and I believe it's the first for my iMac. About a month and a half ago I had a graphics problem where using exposé to show all windows caused the whole screen to become jagged 'shards' of colour (it reminded me of broken pieces of glass). While a restart fixed both of these problems, the graphic problems are not new for this iMac (though I had never had the shard effect before).
Two more little things that I'm unsure if they're related: last night, it turned itself on from sleep, but it does this every other night, so I don't think last night's special; and every time I got it to turn on, I felt that I had to give the power button just a short burst of force, as if holding it for even half a second wouldn't get it to turn on.
Does this sound like the logic board, or less expensively, the power supply? Since it attempts to come on here and there but gets cut off, what does that say with respect to the logic board?
The computer turned one year in August 08, and there's no AppleCare. Even though the warranty's gone, would Apple have any negative view if I opened it up to get my HDD? I can get the screen off with three house suction cups; my HDD was last backed up four days ago, and of course, I had just typed about 3000 words for a story I'm working on between last night and this morning.
And lastly, if I make an appointment with the Apple Store (two hours from here...) and they want to take it in, will they take out my HDD right there and give it to me if I don't take it out? Four days is so tremendous in this situation. I will not part with my HDD.

Perhaps. While I guess they're certified, I still trust Apple the most. Also, if it is a logic board problem, and it is widespread, hopefully this could be free. I don't know how a reseller would handle such a situation. I just want a file off my HDD!
I can confirm that it never really powers on unless it's been unplugged for at least a few seconds. So far, the longer it's been unplugged, the longer it stayed on. There were hours between the times I almost got into my account, and then the login window.
I again switched the MacBook and iMac's RAM, but doing this makes a senseless result. The MB's light simply stays on (no fans or screen, but when I turn it off, I do hear it 'de-whir'), and the iMac just quickly turns on and then off, as it has been after a 5-30 second unplugging session.
I guess this is the rebellion of a Revision A machine.

  • IMac turns itself on during the day

I don't know what is going on. All of a sudden my iMac turns itself on in the middle of the day. It is off when I leave for work (not asleep) and on when I come home. It only seems to happen during the weekday.
I have EyeTV on my computer which can turn it on before recording a program, but I don't record anything during the day.
Is there a log file I can look at to see if I can figure out what is causing it to turn on?
    Thanks!

When you go there hit the "Schedule..." button and see if it selected if you havent already done that and then id see if your permissions are messed up its unlikely but if the powermanagment systems perrmisions get messed up it can cause things like that to happen

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • IMac turns itself on?

    Hello all,
I have been wrongly accused for tampering with my friend's iMac (intel-based). He says he swore he shut it off after using it but found it on at the login screen when he came back to the room. I was the only other person in the house so I've been blamed. I never touched the computer and I do recall that he shut the computer off. I've read that some iMacs have turned themselves on without the user knowing/touching the power button. Can someone credible confirm this? Also, is there a way to access the logs to show when the computer was on and what was accessed?
    Thank you

    Hi all.
I learnt that a few iMac owners, from my Apple vendor, have the same "problem" that the iMac would turn itself on, by leaving the power supply to the iMac turned on (Here our wall plugs have an on/off switch)
I can attest to that because when I return home from work and turn on all the electrical power plugs (not the iMac itself), I do not turn on the iMac immediately and am going round my room turning on the lights, etc; And I would hear the infamous "chime" that my iMac has just started up, all by itself.
I did not set any auto schedule to turn on and/or off my iMac.
This seems to be an intermittent problem with the latest range of iMacs, so I was told. And since it has not pose any other (serious) problems that may affect my mac's performance, I just let it be, at least it saves me the trouble and hassle of reaching to the back to turn on the mac, ha ha.
    Cheers

  • Since downloading Maverick, my iMac turns itself on, even after I put it to sleep. I go away and when I come back, it's switched on!!!

Since downloading Maverick, my iMac switches itself back on after I have put it to sleep.
It does not do it every time but has done it several times. Any ideas on how to stop this?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq wake | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

  • IMac turns itself off during start up

On a  27" iMac I installed the Yosemite 10.10.1 upgrade from the App Store and on restart it turns itself off after the logo and gear are on screen. Unit will not start in safe mode. Now what???

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac turns itself on 5 secs after being put to sleep - I do not have EyeTV

After I manually put the computer to sleep it awakens after 5 seconds. I deleted my power preferences I disconnected all drives.
It just started doing this the other day after having the mac for 2 years.
Is their a process log to investigate what is causing it to turn on?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

  • IMac turning itself off?

i have been using my imac less than a week and in the last 3 days it has shut itself down on it's own four times. i'm a very busy photographer and really can't surrender my imac for a week or my business will heavily suffer.
i've read a whole bunch of threads on here about other people having the same issue but it doesn't seem that there is a real 'fix' for it yet?
if anyone has any insight i'd greatly appreciate it.
i have a july 2010 imac i7 quadcore with OWC installed 16gb ram and a OWC installed esata port. 1TB HD (i keep all my files on a lacie "4 big".)

the power plug is connected just it should be.
it has only done it while i was working at it, not necessarily while using the keyboard.
i don't store any data on the computer, it's all on my lacie 8TB raid external drive so i'm not worried about losing data. just if i am working in photoshop and am not saving after every single edit to a file i will lose the work that i've done.
i have the wireless keyboard and magic mouse.
looking at the console after each shut down (and i start it back up) it says that apple can't open the crash reporter?
in other threads it seems to be an issue with having 16GB ram, other people have downgraded and been able to work without shut downs. i don't want to downgrade though. i work with thousands of raw files (fairly large file size) and need the fast performance to be able to edit photos quickly.

  • Imac turning itself on!

I've been putting my three year old imac to sleep every night, and for the first time ever it woke up by itself at four in the morning. Has this happened to anyone else? How do I prevent it from happening again? It was very creepy.

  • Aluminum Imac Turns Itself On :(

    Everyone,
I have a really weird situation. Over the past few days when I've gone to use my mac I've noticed that it has been turned on even though I distinctly remember shutting it down. Of course I checked the basic stuff like making sure there isn't any programs that would turn it own or ensuring that I don't have the energy saver setup to turn it on. All of this is clear. My next worry was if my mac could be compromised in some way and a remote host is using the wake on lan feature. Is this even possible if the mac is actually powered off? I checked over my system and I don't see anything out of the ordinary. I checked my system.log and secure.log in Terminal and I didn't see anything odd there but here is a snippet of the log files from when I shut it down and when it turned on again:
Here you can see I completely shut it down:
    Nov 28 10:12:12 manhorse loginwindow[33]: DEAD_PROCESS: 0 console

    Nov 28 10:12:12 manhorse shutdown[167]: SHUTDOWN_TIME: 1196262732 550516
Then when it turns back on:

Nov 28 19:00:12 localhost com.apple.launchctl.System[2]: launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist

    Nov 28 19:00:12 localhost com.apple.launchd[1] (org.ntp.ntpd): Unknown key: SHAuthorizationRight
The other weird thing after all the startup stuff is this:

The two things are that it mentions my Public folder and that its trying to find something with the PDF header?? Anyone have any ideas here?
This is something that happens at random times. Now I did have file sharing enabled and the only program I could even see doing something like this is the iConnect 360 program for streaming media from the mac to an Xbox 360 but I disabled that to start up a few days ago.
Any information anyone has would be helpful. Thank you.

  • IMac turns itself off after an attempted RAM upgrade

I took the 1GB from the memory slot and installed
2x2GB which didn't work so replaced the original
1GB and now it shuts itself off after about ten
seconds of attempting to reboot. I've tried all
    combinations but nothing works.

    Doug,
I work as a sys admin at a college, we bought 90, 20" I Macs last November, we have had 3 break so far with the same problem, and one with a failed motherboard as a result of a bad power supply.
I have been a mac user for over 10 years and to have machines break after 2 months of use is shocking for a company that previously had such a good reputation for quality products.
This is a known issue, and the company that fixes our machines under applecare has admitted that these machines have a faulty power supply. I know the Rev A models had issues with power supplies, but the fact that all the 20" models have a 150 watt power supply doesn't help as this is not enough power to run a power pc plus 20" screen etc.
If i were you i would get it sorted straight away as other people have had this issue and it will only get worse if you dont get the power supply replaced.
    Regards,
    Kevin.

  • MacBook Pro turns itself on every night at 8:00 p.m. EDT

I am getting freaked out! I am a new Mac user, and my factory new MacBook Pro will turn itself on (a full start, boot up) every night at 8:00 p.m. This is a cold boot up. The computer is not in sleep mode. Additionally, I have not done any auto wake or sleep commands. I have seen this issue mentioned by a few other folk, but I do not see Apple providing a response. It is creepy and it needs to be fixed. HELP.

There is nothing in preferences I have set to cause the computer to start up. It does not seem to do when it is not plugged into the ac adapter. It appears to happen only when the computer is hooked up to ac. I can always tell it has turned itself on, because the glow from the latch starts. I cannot take the computer back because it is past 14 days, and Apple Tech Support, when I called them about this, was useless. Since no one has been able to answer it in the forum, I can only suspect there is something wrong with the computer. Everything else with the computer seems to be fine. I just don't want my hardware to be working when I don't want it to work, and I have concerns about security. I have taken the AirPort offline when I log off, but given the computer turns itself on, I do not take comfort in supposing by turning off the function, the MB has actually followed the command. What else is the computer doing contrary to what I want it to do?

  • Ipod- turning itself on

    Hi,
Can the ipod be COMPLETELY turned off on the iphone4, and ONLY turned on when I want it on. I have noticed on several occasions that it had turned itself on, and then interferes with other apps I have running. Also it is using up battery life when not required.
    Thanks,
    Greg

Do you mean a song starts playing without selecting play?
I've never had the iPod interfere with any of the included apps or with any 3rd party apps since day one beginning with the original iPhone and with every firmware version.
How is the iPod interfering with other apps you have running? Most 3rd party apps are not running in the background when leaving the app with iOS4. The overwhelming majority of 3rd party apps are quit when leaving the app the same as before iOS4. Some apps such as games that have been updated for iOS4 are suspended with leaving the app. An app that is suspended is not running or using processor cycles in the background.
