IMac turns off as if it short-circuits?

I've only noticed this happening when I'm using Photoshop CS5...
I have an iMac 27" with:
Intel Core i5
2.8 GHz
16GB Memory
(Mod identifier: iMac11,3)
WHEN I USE PHOTOSHOP, and I use the free transform tool to enlarge (only when I enlarge) an image, the computer turns off completely, instantly without any warning. Just straight to 'OFF' mode. I have to start it again with the power button. No reports of unusual behaviour come up on the screen, it just shuts off as if there has been a power cut. Nothing else shuts off from the power supply, just the iMac so I know the problem is definitely internal (within the iMac).
I'm really struggling with this problem.

Hi Miriam, thanks for the reply!
I'm afraid I'm not too tech-savvy, so I wouldn't know how to check my space on the drive. But this has happened since I got the computer (1 year ago), so I doubt it. Here is what the 'Console' said - make any sense to you?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

    Hi Hank,
    Some things to try...
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
(SMC reset=  Shut down, disconnect power cord for 10 seconds, reconnect power cord, wait 5 more seconds, turn computer back on)
but it is slightly different:   (PMU REST = Shut computer down, disconnect power cord for 10+ seconds, reconnect power cord WHILE SIMULTANEOOUSLY PRESSING POWER BUTTON, let off power button for a few seconds, then press power button again to restart the mac mini.)
Can also be caused by USB or Firewire devices.

My iMac turns off during startup any suggestions as to why?

Try running Apple Hardware Test on your computer. Also repair the hard drive with disk utility.

  • Why does my iMac turn off unexpectedly?

I have had my iMac for over two years and never had this problem. It has just started about two weeks ago. About 30 minutes or so, maybe shorter or longer, after I turn it on, this gray bar goes over the screen and then a message appears. It says to please turn off or restart the computer. What can I do to stop this. I've heard that it might be an overheating problem, but I'm not sure.

Hello Fredrick. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If the screen is in multiple languages as per the following link, then you are experiencing a kernel panic.
    What is a Kernel panic?
It is difficult to pin down but is often a hardware related matter. Sometime failing RAM can lead to this problem as well.

  • Turn off iMessage on my imac, Turn off iMessage on my imac

TURN OFF IMESSAGE ON MY IMAC?

    Hi bnichols75,
A quick question about that - I had discovered that same process you described above, BUT in my scenario (I have 3 iMacs, and one of the is at our Business and we don't want our employees reading our imessages, but want them to benefit from the syncing of all the other things like Calendar, Emails etc, which we have been doing for the last 3 years).  My question is:  Will signing out of icloud (from within preferences in imessage) aside from simply "unselecting enable", then sign me out of all icloud features?  Or will it simply just deactivate imessage because it's being done from within the Preferences inside of iMessage?  I want to make sure that doing the "sign out of iCloud", (from within the imessage application) that it wont sign the entire imac out of iCloud because we still want our business imac to have access to all the other cloud features, like the apps, calendar, email etc.  Just NOT the iMessages.
Sorry, I bet this is written more confusingly than it needed to be, but hope you understand what I'm asking.  Thanks in advance!

  • Imac turns off, no apparent reason

my imac suddenly turns off, completely, no apparent reason and intermittently

I'm experiencing similar issues. The iMac will just power down as if the power were pulled from the wall. Screen goes blank and you hear the fan slow and stop. Worried that this will cause problems on the disk. Ever since snow leopard was installed there have been a few issues. This one has been manifesting itself in the last year or so... The console just shows a timestamp for when I turned the machine on but nothing is logged right before the shut down.

It sounds like you may not have the power cord pushed in tightly enough
to the back of the screen port. Push it in really really tightly, OK?

  • Imac turns off itself

I just bought my iMac 27'inch 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 and occasionally it turns off itself, i have checked the PCU and it is fine, not sure if there is a deficiency in this particular machine. Please advise.

  • IMac turn off by itself

    Hi everybody
My iMac has been turning off repeateadly in the middle of a job. When it does it, I cannot turn it on again inmediately. I have to wait to next day, some times even longer. If the cable is plugged in, I cannot turned it on. I've tried everything. Changing the cable, changing the power font, etc. Some people say the problem is with the mother board. As a consequence of this, my disk drive didn't work anymore.
I have been told this is a factory problem and that Apple is recognizing it. Does anyone know abot it?
    Thank in advance

T update; I get the blackout without the restarts and tried all the suggested remedies on these forums with no relief. I can see light from the grill covering the ram access port so I do not think it is fully shutdown but will not respond to any wireless input devices so I must press the power bottom on the back to restart It which it does in a normal fashion. The machine does not seem to be running hot (much cooler than my black Mackbook) . I guess I will be bringing it in but I do not feel optimistic given the posts by users who did so and did not get a fix. I think this issue will take some time to resolve. I just wanted to add my two cents.

  • IMac Turns off by itself!!!

If I leave my iMac on for more than a day, it turns off by itself! After you turn it back on, the date always says it's December 31, 1969 and the time is always many hours ahead, even when it's set to use a network time server. Is there anything I can do about this?
    iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

It sounds as if your CMOS backup battery has failed. I don't know if there's anything you can do except arrange to send the unit back to Apple for repair, but you may get a much better answer if you repost the question in the proper forum: this one is for the new Intel based iMacs.

  • Imac turning off and won't turn back on

hey, here is the details for my imac
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac4,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.1f5
    Serial Number:
I will be randomly using my Imac and it will just shutdown. Then if i try to turn it back on i won't be able to, so i have to take out all the power chords from the wall, leave it or 30 mins or so then try and turn it on then it usually will. When i plugg the power back in i do not need to turn the imac back on, I just relugg it into the wall and the computer will start up. This used to happen a few hours into using my mac but now it will hardly turn on before it just shuts down. Also, if i leave it plugged into the wall after it turns off it will not turn back on, i need to unplugg it for it to work again.
Please someone let me know what is going on!
    thanks!

    Hello Nicholas,
Try resetting the System Management Controller. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    Summary
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMC may resolve it. The SMC controls several functions, including:
*Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.*
Handling system resets from various commands.
    Controlling the fans.

  • IMac turns off while sleeping

My iMac sometimes turns off during sleep mode, I did call apple care and went through utilities and the tech support said that issue should be resolved, but it happen again today. Has anyone else had the same issues? Is this also the start of some bigger issues down the line?
    Thanks,
    BC

    HI BC,
Check System Preferences/Energy Saver. Click the Schedule button bottom right in that pane and make sure it's not set to turn off at a certain time.
According to this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 Make sure your software is up to date.
