Imac turns off when going to sleep

Hi,
My imac shutdowns and I need to manually turn it back on - it has happened a few times now when I put my computer to sleep. Anything I can do to stop this? Should I be contacting Apple? Is this a big issue? Thanks Bethany

If the computer successfully goes to sleep/wake, it will post lines in console like this:
Nov 28 18:56:47 computername kernel[0]: System Sleep
Nov 28 18:56:53 computername kernel[0]: System Wake
Do you get any lines like these around the time it happens?
Also, resetting the SMC might be a good thing to try:

  • IMac turns off when put to sleep

I have an iMac without iSight, 1.6GHz. Whenever I put the computer to sleep it just turns off instead of going to sleep. I dont know what I can do to fix this but it is really annoying because I dont like waiting for the computer to turn on when I want to use it, but I hate leaving it running all day, what do I do?

I had the same problem and the problem was with the power supply, supply replaced, problem was fixed. This "repair extension" was announced a year ago, but buried on the Apple websites. I didn't know about myself until I got help on the board. I am surprised that the Consumer Product Safety Board hasn't forced Apple to make this a recall to fix a clearly defective power supply. The people at the AppleStore (AppleCare techs were no help by the way) knew exactly what the problem was as they had fixed many, many time before. Apple should do the right thing by its consumers and issue a recall on computers with these power supply problems.

  • Imac makes fan noise when it turns off or goes to sleep

    Hello,
I bought a new iMac from bestbuy during the last week of april 2013.
Recently when I turn the iMac off or put it to sleep, it begins to make a loud fan noise at the back above the place where the power goes into the iMac. However, the moment I turn on the computer the sound goes away.
I left the iMac on for a few hours thinking the noise will go away on its own but it didnt. Now I always have to turn off the iMac and take the power out of the wall in order for it to not make noise.
Does anyone know what I can do to solve my problem? I have tried the SMC reset and the Pram reset however it does not seem to do the trick for me.

I would recommend resetting the SMC at least 3x back to back, sometimes it does not work the first time. If you don't know how please navigate to https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603 for detailed instructions. If that does not help, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone coverage or if you already bought AppleCare (VERY STONGLY RECOMMENDED) this will extend your 1 year warranty to 3 years and includes 3 years of  phone support. If you are in the USA you can buy it from B&H Photo for as little as $122 vs. at BBY or Apple for $169.

  • Thunderbolt Display Turns Off/MBP Goes to Sleep in Clamshell when MagSafe unplugged

My battery is fine, but I can't use my 2011 15" 2.2ghz MBP + Thunderbolt Display in clam shell mode without being plugged into power from MagSafe. Disconnect the cable, Thunderbolt quits and MBP goes to sleep.
This drains battery by being constantly plugged in.
I updated my the TB firmware today when prompted. Problem existed before and after.
Let me know what's up, very annoying.

The internal battery could handle the extra power needed when using the external display, but OS X (or maybe the firmware) doesn't allow clamshell mode without external power.

If it did, the extra discharging and charging would mean replacing the battery sooner.

  • Is there any way to log off automatically from a WIFI connection every time the device is turned off or goes into sleep mode.

I have a bunch of Apple devices in my house (kids) and don't like the idea of all these devices (iPads, iPod touches, iPhones) always being connected to my home WIFI.  Ideally, I would prefer the devices connect automatically when they are in use by a human and log off the network when they (the devices) go to sleep mode or are turned off.

This is not an answer, more of a question.  I know that when a pad goes to sleep, it drops the connection. We all remember the thousands of posts from folks who had trouble re establishing the connection after waking up in the early days.  What is different now is the use of push, and notifications.  If you have these enabled, doesn't that mean that the wifi needs to stay active?
I notice that I have notifications on the screen that came in while asleep, and I can only believe that the wifi saw them.  This is different from the old behavior or re grabbing the wifi.
So, to Pam, on one the devices you are concerned about, turn off notifications, fetch and push, put it to sleep, and see if it drops off the network.  I am kind of curious.
By the way, having the wifi active has not shown me any battery usage. The router certainly does not care.  Security is at the router end, so if somebody wants to hijack my signal, it does not matter if the pad is active or not.  So I guess I am not clear either on what your issue might be.

  • Airport Card turned off when resuming from sleep - New since 10.6.6

I use safe sleep regularly, as I use my laptop at both work and home. Ever since the update to 10.6.6 though, I have had to manually turn my Airport connection back on after resuming from sleep.
Previously, although it was unreliable about connecting to a preferred network (an unrelated, but equally frustrating issue*) at least it would remain on. Now I've had to add the icon to my Menu bar just so I don't have to dig into System Preferences every single time I reawaken my laptop.
Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is anything I can do to prevent it? I apologize if this has been asked before, but when I searched I was unable to find anything.
*This issue is unrelated and not the focus of my post, but if you happen to know about it I would absolutely appreciate your input.
When resuming from sleep, despite being between 5-20 feet from my preferred router I will often receive a dialog asking me to select from a list of SSIDs and enter a password even though that information is already saved. Then, once I complete this information Airport doesn't actually connect and the only way to resolve the issue is to turn Airport off and then back on. After this, it will automatically connect with no problems and remain connected until I put the computer into Sleep mode again.

Maybe check in your keychain and verify the password saved is correct for your wireless router?
Do you broadcast the network name?
Could you describe "unreliable about connecting to a preferred network"?
Is "use secure virtual memory" checked in the Security preference pane? If so try unchecking that maybe? If it's a hibernation issue sometimes that could cause weirdness.

  • IMac turns-off when you adjust the screen

Brand new iMac simply turns-off without warning when you adjust the screen or connect to the usb port.
How do you prevent this from happening??

It sounds like you may not have the power cord pushed in tightly enough
to the back of the screen port. Push it in really really tightly, OK?

  • My iMac won't stay asleep, or it will turn itself off when going to sleep

If I select Sleep from the Apple menu, the screen goes blank, the light waxes and wanes once and the computer wakes up again.
When I allow it go to sleep by itself (my screen saver comes on after being idle for 15 minutes, then it should go to sleep after being idle for 45 minutes), then the screen goes dark, the light waxes and wanes once and then the light stays out, the display stays dark and after a few seconds the fans start running at high speed. It won't wake up by mouse or keyboard, I have to hold the power button for a few seconds, until a faint click tells me it's truly shut down. Then I can restart. I have tried resetting the SMU twice and that did not make any difference. What else can I do to make my iMac behave?

  • Whenever my iPod is turned off or goes into sleep mode, it hard boots everytime I turn it back on.  This seems to have started only when I upgraded to OS6.

My iPod hard boots everytime I turn it on.  I get the Apple logo and 5 minutes later it starts up. This seems to have started when I upgraded to OS6.

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • IPod Touch turns off when shaken during sleep mode & other problems

I noticed a problem with my iPod Touch around a month after I bought and I thought it was normal for the iPod Touch to act that way but it seemed rather getting into my nerves. I will try to describe the situation the best way I possibly could so please bear with me.
First, I have a problem with my iPod when it's at sleep mode. When I press the home button too look at the time/date for example and then I shake it or move it before it blacks out and goes back to sleep mode again, it hangs up and I have to press the power & home button to turn it off. It happened all the time and it gets really annoying because when friends borrow it, it dies.
The same thing happens when I play a song and then I don't put it to sleep mode. When I shake it, it hangs up.
Second, when I use my iPod at night before sleeping to listen to music and the like, the moment I wake up, the battery is totally drained. I am DEFINITELY sure that no song was playing at that time and it was even fully charged. Last night I decided to monitor my iPod on a regular basis to see at what point in time the battery starts to diminish. I fell asleep but when I woke up at around 10 to check my iPod, the screen is black and yet it's on because the screen is glowing. I restarted it and when it went on again, the applications are all disarranged.
Third, there are duplicate songs in my iPod although when I check in my iTunes to delete the songs, it only appears as a single song but it is in duplicate in my iPod.
    What do I do? Thanks!

  • FaceTime camera turns off when going to full screen

    Hi guys,
both me and my girlfriend have the same issue with FaceTime and Mavericks on MBA 2012: when we start a conversation and switch to full screen, the image disappears. The sound remains, so we can keep talking, but no video. The camera indicator also shuts down.
We have to go back to a window view, then switch again to full screen - then "it just works".
There were no problems in ML before, it just started with Mavericks. My girlfriend has moved to Mavericks first and the problem appeared when she was toggling to fullscreen, I couldn't see her until she switched back to window view, then she could switch again to full screen. She could see me me all the time. When I updated to Mavericks, I got the same issue.
Does anybody have the same problem? Any suggestions how to resolve it?
    Thank you very much!

    Hi,
I see I made an error  in my first answer.
The Original post is categorised as iMessages and Messages as well as Using Mavericks and Wifi and Internet.
It then has a tag of FaceTime.
I filter my searches in the Mavericks Community by using the iMessages and Messages Category.
As an iMessages conversation can be used to invoke FaceTime for  Video Chat I can see that was what I was thinking about here.
However at the same Time Messages can do Video chats in AIM and Jabber accounts and has it's own windows for that.
I seem to remember an issue with one app not going Full Screen when the window was not "landscape" but more 4:3 or even square in looks.
I don't think that was FaceTime but as the app can display in either Portrait or Landscape it may pay yo switch to Landscape first.

  • IMac Turns Off when start using DVD Drive

I first noted this problem when I try to install windows and thought that was a boot camp problem: every time it start the instalation then shutdown (no warning, it seens like it was unplugged). I tried Vista DVD and Windows XP CD (both original medias already tested in a PC).
Then a noted that the problem occours when the iMac try to use the DVD drive. It's not related with the media, sometimes it happens and sometimes it does not with different CDs/DVDs and softwares (iDVD, Finder).
    Any help?
    P.S. Sorry for my english.

oooohh well that fixed up my DVD burning issue
    UDMA 2 =~ 33 m/b sec?
    16x DVD = ~ 25mb sec?
If the above numbers are correct then that should be fine as a band aid fix for my DVD burning issues
    Thanks a load!
    Your sir are a gentleman!
Also since my last post I found that I supposedly wasn't running the latest BIOS...
I flashed from 1.6 to 1.11 which is listed as the newest here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=252
But I installed MSI Live Update 3 (I've never used it before) and it said there was a "1.B" BIOS... so I let it re-flash to that one...
I'll try out my USB printer again once this DVD finishes burning

  • Wifi automatically turned off when phone sleeps in iOS 5.1.1?

Before, I used iOS 5.0.1 and wifi would keep turned on when the phone sleeps if I turn off data. This way I could always receive instant notifications. But then I sold the verizon phone and bought a used FU one, installed with iOS 5.1.1. Now wifi is automatically turned off when phone the sleeps, even when data is off. Is this how it works? Because I want to use wifi, even when the phone is off. Thanks.

I have had and iphone 4 for the last couple of years with all the different IOS upgrades and never experienced such a thing!? I do not have a cell data plan (I even have it switched of in settings) so I rely on wifi and, even when the phone was in standby, the wifi was constantly on! and I received e-mails and skype calls as they arrived, So wifi was certainly ON!
However, since the last upgrade to IOS 6.0 the wifi is indeed being turned off when the phone goes to sleep mode, which is very annoying!
    Any fix/workaround?
    Thanks

  • I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when USB.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.
