IMac turns on, but display is off

Hi Everyone,
Last night I downloaded a couple of updates for windows after installing via boot camp. After the updates i shut the computer off from windows.
This morning I get up to turn on my iMac and i here the boot up sound, my mouse turns on, but my monitor wont turn on.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hello
Well, this is a strange issue. Its not easy to say what the problem can be.
But first of all you should remove the battery and AC adapter for 1, 2 hours.
After this procedure use the power supply for the working test.
If the problem still valid, I assume that its a hardware malfunction.
In this case the best way is to contact the service partner.
Best regards

imac turns on but screen stays black ? i can hear it operating ...

    Hope this helps:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • G5 turns on but display stops at gray screen+apple logo

Can someone tell me why my G5 turns on but display stops at gray screen+apple logo. The keyboard and the superdrive not responding. After a minute the fans kick in and grow louder and faster...?? I tried a reset with the P and R but keyboard N/S. USB have power. I do get the start sound then the gray logo+screen.
    Thanks for the help anyone!!
    G5 dual 2G   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2G RAM, 23" display

I was getting a similar issue yesterday, stuck on the
grey screen, then the G5 turned into mini turbine
engine. I'm not sure what fixed it, i took out the
plastic wind deflector and noticed three leds next to
the RAM slots were lit up.. with some quick googling
bringing me back to apple's support pages, it turned
out the lights came up because the deflector shield
wasn't in place. Anyway myabe it was slightly out of
place, but that coupled with unplugging the power
cable for some moments seemed to help, and i was able
to get past the logo screen etc..
but i was still getting intermittent issues, with
startup and programs, and getting plenty of crashes.
So i did the Apple Hardware Test, and after 3hrs it
turned out my RAM was at fault. I recieved the
machine only a week back, since then i've added new
RAM, which was the exact same Samsung RAM that apple
use, though one stick didn't share the exact same
serial, it was still the same spec.. anyway i've
removed the pair of 1GB sticks for the time being,
and since doing so, i've got my mac running to its
full strength.. i just hope i can sort out this RAM
issue and not have blown my money.
Thanks for the help but I tried the cable thing etc and nothing so I reformated the disk (clean install and I'm back to normal now...so the RAMS were not the problem in my case.
Also, I'm glad I backed up all my stuff frequently therefore, no losses...

  • Pavilion g6 turns on but screen stays off

My laptop screen will not turn on. I hear the laptop itself turn on but screen does not turn on. This is the second time within a year that I've had problems with this laptop. I've tried the hard reset and tried powering it up without the battery and just the power cord and nothing. Please help! I'm lost on what to try next.

    Hi @sanaa0415
Please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following, if you need help with that information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is there any sign that the display is getting power, a slight flicker, or a bit of backlighting, to indicate the display is powered?
Do you see anything on the display at all during startup, such as error messages?
Was there anything done to the notebook just prior to the display going out on you? Software or driver updates, new hardware, or anything accidental.

  • My ipad2 is turned on but displays nothing it just shows a blank screen like as though its turned off but it isn't

my ipad2 screen does not display anything. I've tried reseting it and it worked the first 2 times after that it just says on my itunes ipad is in recovery..... and then it comes out with the same result no screen display. Its like as though its turned off but its not. what do I do.I threw away the receipt and box so sending it back to apple can be checked off the list any ideas as to how to fix this will be very much appreciated.AGAIN I EMPHASIZE I HAVE TRIED RESETING IT COUNTLESS TIMES THAT IS HOLDING DOWN THE HOME BUTTON AND ON AND OFF BUTTON SIMULTANEOUSLY.

If a Reset is not working for you... Then...
    Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

  • My iMac turns on but nothing appears on screen?

I just bought an iMac G5 that from someone I know and he told me something was wrong with it. When I turn it on I hear the chime, the light on the front turns on, the fan turns on and I hear disks spinning which sounds like the superdrive. I took it apart thinking it had to do with the motherboard because he said thats what it was and the lights on the motherboard turn on also. What could the problem be?

You really need to get the install discs from the previous owner, or you can get them from Apple, but you should have them handy. You can try booting from the Leopard disc and using Disk Utility to verufy/repair the hard drive.

  • IMac turns on, but won't work

    Hello,
My computer (2007 Intel iMac) froze, and in my attempts to restart it, it will load up normally, go to the home screen, load the start-up programs (just Quicksilver), but then won't function at all. The dock pops up when I mouse over it, but clicking on an application does nothing. Alt-tab appears (the options are between Finder and Quicksilver), but doesn't actually change the on-top application. The open Finder window doesn't respond (although when I mouse over the close/minimize/maximize buttons at the top left, they graphically display the roll-over images, but don't actually work when I click on them). The keyboard and mouse both have fresh batteries and are functioning normally (pressing the eject button on the keyboard does eject the DVD in the disc drive).
I've force quit Quicksilver, force relaunched Finder, manually powered down and restarted, reset the SMU (which resulted in the fan blasting at full until I manually powered down again). Any advice for next steps?
    Thanks,
    Susan

I was just going to go there. Noticed a couple of logic boards on eBay for $20 or so and was considering undertaking the challenge.

  • 17inch iMac turns on but nothing happens but boot up sound

hi my late 2006 17" iMac goes to a blank screen when turnt on and does nothing else but make start up sound, could the logic board be broken or is it something else?

Probably, you need to take it in though to find out how much. The computer is 6+ years old, it may simply be time to be replaced.

  • HT3964 iMac turns on but wheel keeps turning but nothing happens

I turn on computer sign in  wheel turns but nothing happens. Help please. Huka

Did you do any of the other suggested stuff?  For example, boot from your recovery partition and run Disk Utility to repair/verify you drives (not repair permissions).
Do I take it your reference to "shift" was to boot in safe mode?  If so you did you really boot in safe mode?  Did you push the shift immediately after the boot chime?
Did you remoeve all additional periphials (firewire's, USB's)?
You might consider running the Apple Hardware Test.

  • "Waking out of sleep" mechanical noise made but display still off...

Generally I put my Mac to sleep. For a while now, I would notice the Mac would make the mechanical "waking out of sleep" noise randomly (middle of the night lets say) as if it were coming out of sleep mode yet the screen wouldn't turn on. Any reason for this? I asked this question a week ago and didn't get answer. Any comment would be appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks to Apple my machine is working wonderfully well
New logic board and video card.
    Thanks Apple !!!!

  • Firefox starts up and shows up in the task manager, but displays only off screen. How can I make it display elsewhere? I have restarted and reinstalled to no avail.

    Nothing to add here.

This page will position the Firefox window at the upper left of your display (assuming you haven't disabled JavaScript):
    http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/jstest.html
If Firefox is your default browser, you can load that page by clicking the Windows "orb" on the task bar and pasting it into the "Search programs and files box", then press Enter or click the result with the Firefox icon next to it.
I don't have a dual monitor setup, so I don't know whether it works in that case.

  • 2009 Core 2 Duo iMac Display not turning on, but everything else is.

The iMac turns on, but NOTHING is on the screen. The machine boots fine, and can even connect to an external display. Help?

That is a tough problem since you don't seem to be able to boot from anything, hard drive, install disks, external. Sounds a lot like a failure on the logic board. And goes to the AirPort card twice before failing. Are you able to take the iMac to an Apple Retail Store genius bar or an Apple authorized repair service? This would be a good problem for their diagnostics.

  • Imac turning on itself and shutting down randomly

My 2011 iMac started having this weird problem today. Basically, when i turned it off in the morning and left for work, it started turning itself on and off multiple times while i was away. When i got home, I tried turning it off, and it would turn itself on after anywhere between 1-2mins.
The boot screen shows up and i would get the booting sound, then it would restart itself and do the same thing over again.
I unplugged the power and waited for a while, then the imac turned on correctly, but as soon as i set it to sleep, it would fail to wake up. Now i can't even switch it on; the keyboard and mouse would lightup(third party ones) but nothing shows up on the screen and no boot sound. 2 seconds later the lights go off and it would try to restart again.
Again, I have the 2011 i5 imac, with a samsung 830 SSD installed not long ago. Please help!

holding D doesn't work, the computer just boots up for 2 seconds, you can hear the fans turn on, but shut itself off right after that and tries to boot up again.
I installed the SSD like 6months ago too, if there was something that i forgot to connect back it should had happened long time ago no?

  • 2009 Mac Pro turns on and then powers off a few seconds after.

    Help!!!
I have two Mac Pro's with separate issues.  First Mac Pro does turn on but then cuts off by the time it gets to the Login window.  I opened it up and saw that when the computer is on, there is a red light in the middle of the processor board.  Is this normal? And what should i do to see what is causing this?  I had 16GB RAM but i tried swapping out chips to see if maybe it was a RAM issue.  Same issue even if all i put in is 2GB of RAM.
Second mac Dosent even turn on.  Also a 2009 model.  the red light that normally blinks once when you plug power in on the Main board, doesn't even flicker.  I feel it's the power supply,  but before i try swapping power supplies i thought i would see if i could get a second opinion.
    Please Help
    Thanks

On your first example, if the Mac detects Directory Damage such that the Boot Volume cannot be mounted, it will run the equivalent of a Disk Utility ( Repair disk ) at Startup. If that does not repair the problem, you will not be starting up, so it powers down.
On the second one, the traditional method of debugging those difficult problems is to remove everything that could be dragging down power, and hope for the Chime. Yes that means everything. If you remove all the RAM, but it is otherwise working, it will flash the power light to indicate "not enough working RAM to start up". Add back some RAM and you should get the chime. add back the graphics card and you should get the blinking question mark. Add a boot drive and... so on.
