IMac unable to read CDs

My iMac won´t read music CDs. It tkes them in and make some noises until ejects them. They don´t even show up on the desktop. DVDs are OK.
How can I sort this out?

The drive may simply be broken. Separate lasers are used for CDs and DVDs, so the CD laser may be dead. Be sure to try commercially made audio CDs as well as home made ones if you have not already. Some people suggest a lens cleaning disc, which I have not tried, or a blast of canned air into the slot.
A disc showing up on the desktop is a function of settings in System Preferences/CDs & DVDs, so this may not mean much.

I too have suddenly developed this failure to burn. Worked well last week, now doesn't even get to the multiplexing stage, just ejects the blank disk. Ejects original Leopard disk, won't write to CD with Toast 8. Couldn't even check the hardware diagnostic as it just spits the disk out.
Tried Unix single usere mode Command S to type in fsck -y after the prompt localhost# (p840 - The Missing Manual series Leopard) but never got to this prompt. Upgraded to lastest iMovie and iDVD
Tried your FINDER- PREFERENCES - TICKED THEM BUT THEY DON'T SHOW UP IN THE SIDEBAR. . Starting to look ominous. Here I am in the middle of the South Pacific with no Mac repair shop within 3000 km.
OR any other suggestions - may be "life saving" or this iMac is going on a long flight soon or could you send your father-in law.

Satellite M40X-184's DVD/CD-RW drive unable to read CDs

I have a three month old Satellite M40X-184 with Mat****a UJDA760 DVD/CD-RW drive. Last few days the optical drive is unable to read any type of CDs. But it can read DVDs. Can somebody please tell me what's wrong with it? Is the drive broken? Is it necessary to replace the DVD/CD-RW with a new drive? Thanks.

It is not easy to say if the drive is defective but you should anyway contact your local dealer. The warranty is valid and if there is some technical problem the drive will be replaced.
I dont know if this can help but you can try to remove the drive from device manager and restart the unit. The drive will be recognized and installed properly. If there is the problem with original music CDs you should really contact the local dealer.
Before the unit will be checked I believe that the best way to check it properly is to preinstall the unit with recovery media. The same thing will be done by technicians before hardware replacement. If you want you can do it too.

New iMac unable to read music cds?

I just bought the new Beatles box set--and it does not work fully in my iMac. It does play the mini documentary, but not the music. iTunes doesnt even recognize it.
It is on enhanced cds but an old cd player I have does play the music. What's up with this?
I also tried a couple of standard old music cds--same thing.

Never mind. The iMac went into a series of rebooting, after I restarted it to pop out the cd it did not recognize. Then the screen went sort of off color with a normal color stripe running thru it. It went back to the Apple store and has been replaced!

IMAC won't read CDs or DVDs

I just got my iMAC setup and established today. Everything went fairly smoothly until I tried to insert and play a DVD with the side-mounted DVD drive. The drive physically took the DVD, but it always just cranks there for several seconds and then spits the disk right back out. This happens with regular data and music CDs as well. What am I missing?

Brand New iMac unable to read data DVD or eject it.

Hello all,
I'm no good with technology so please bear with me.
I just purchased a brand new iMac a couple of weeks ago, and I'm attempting to run a Data DVD that I got for an online university class.
When put in to the disc drive, one of two things happens:
1) It fails to recognize that there is a DVD in it.
2) It eventually recognizes it (about 5 mins), but then shows nothing on the disc.
after that it is nearly impossible to eject the disc without rebooting the computer or pushing eject a million times and waiting 10 minutes.
Assuming the disc is good (the rest of them are, but I'm getting a replacement just in case), what else can I do?

If it just does it with the one disc the disc is likely bad. Get a replacement disc.
If it does it with multiple discs the drive may be faulty. With a new Mac I'd take it back to the store.

Unable to read/write CDs/DVDs

I have a Sony DVD RW DW-U10A combo drive. I have been unable to write CDs for a few weeks now, but manage with my MacBook. Now however, the drive in the iMac doesn't see either blank or written CDs, or professionally produced CDs. This also applies to all DVDs.
The only, but major, change that I have made is to upgrade to Tiger. I cannot categorically link the problem with the upgrade.
Could this be the cause of the problem? What can I do to be able to read/write CDs while using Tiger?
How can I clean the CD lense if that is also contributing to the problem?

My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.

I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
Trash the following folders:
com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
Restart
Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years,but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes.

IMac SuperDrive will only read CDs

My imac 27 inch will only read CDs - DVDs just whir and then eject.

Unable to read Virtual PC 5 or 6 installation CDs

My machine in unable to read Virtual PC installation CD's in Tiger (10.4.6).
I have a Power Mac G4(1Ghz) with stock Super drive.
In the same machine I was able to read the same CDs in Jaguar before. Now after a while the machine ejects the CD.
Did any body have such problems with Virtual PC CDs in Tiger
Any suggestions..?

The IOATAController device blocking bus message often indicates a failing device.
For example, if this message is found when investigating startup problems or kernel panics, it often indicates a failing hard drive. In such cases, checking the hard drives SMART diagnostics — as described in Step 1 of the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ — can determine if the hard drive is failing.
In your case, unless you're having other problems with your Mac, and assuming:• You are inserting the CDs properly, i.e. they're seated correctly before closing the drive.
• The CDs are in good shape: no dirt, scratches, cracks, or other visible defects.
• The problem arises on most or all CDs.Then I suspect your optical drive may be failing. If the computer is still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, contact Apple about having the optical drive replaced. Otherwise, you should probably look for a replacement. Check the Drive Compatibility Database at AccelerateYourMac.com. IMHO, this is the best site for totally unbiased reviews of this kind of hardware from people with first-hand experience.

IMac not reading CDs/DVDs

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this. Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs. Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down. It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
Anyone have any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

Matshita DVD-R UJ 857-E (unable to burn CDs but reading DVDs and CDs)

I have had the macbook and burner for about three years.
I am unable to burn cds. When I attempt to do so in iTunes or Toast the error message reads "please insert a recordable cd". I have used the same cds to burn on other computers so I believe this is a problem with my drive and not the cds I'm trying to record to.
I am able to burn DVDs in Toast.
Any ideas? I'm looking for a driver right now...

I truly believe this is a software issue. I changed the system settings of the CD/DVD (system profiler) of "when inserting a blank CD to 'open finder' " ( u can use 'ask me' but I didn't have that option) instead of opening iTunes. Once the CD was mounted I was able to burn to the disk in iTunes as well as iPhoto. I was unable to that when I just inserted the disk from the program when prompted.

Don't even attempt it. It won't work, and the disk will just get stuck in the drive's mechanism. If you want to use mini-disks, you'll need an external tray-loading optical drive.

Unable to burn CDs

Hi;
I have just installed iTunes on a new WIN 7 64 bit computer and I am unable to burn CDs. When starting iTunes I get the message that I need to re-install iTunes to fix the problem. I have done that but still does not solve the issue, Also installed the GEAR driver as suggested in another thread.

Thanks for the quick response I went to the device manager and did what you asked and no change in performance,but in the drop-down of the DVD/CD Rom Drive the next file? of HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T2ON ATA DEVICE on the icon there is a pyramid with the yellow exclamation point inside??. I've tried to update the drivers but Microsoft says that they are up to date. It seems that my Windows Media Player does not know or recognize that I have an internal CD burner because on the side box where you are to drag songs to burn, the message of "Connect a burner and restart the player". As you can tell I am not very computer literate so any help will be greatly appreciated. How can I tell if the CD/DVD player is just broken?? Thanks so much.
