IMac "unavailable" on network

I have both an iBook and iMac G5, both running OS X 10.4.x. On the G4 is a printer connected which is shared. Also all option at "energy" are set.
The iBook can only print when the iMac is "awake". If the iMac goes to sleep then the iBook cannot find any printers. In that (iMac being asleep) situation the iBook 's finder also cannot find the iMac in the network.
Is there anything I can look into to solve this behaviour?

Use the Energy Saver preference pane (in System Preferences) on the iMac to not allow the processor to sleep.
When the processor sleeps all the services stop.

  • How do I add a printer connected to another iMac on the network to my printer list?

How do I add an Epson printer connected to an iMac on the network to the printer list on my MacBook Pro? I cannot get it to show up in the list for printers to add.

That only works if the printer is itself a network printer. You can't do it if it is directly connected to another computer on the network unless it is configured to be a Shared Printer on the other computer.

  • After setting up my brand new Airport Express 802.11n and accidentally using it to connect my iMac to the network...my iMac no longer connects through Ethernet?  Any ideas...I have tried everything without success!!

I have been using Apple technology for about 10 years starting with 1st generation iPods and our house now includes a 5 year old iMac, all versions of iPods and touches, Apple TVs (both generations) and most recently an iPad 2.  I have always told family and friends that Apple technology just works.  Unfortunately that stopped today.  I bought a new Airport Express 802.11n to use for AirTunes around my new pool.  I set it up from my iMac and accidentally used it to connect my iMac to the network for a short time.  Now I can no longer connect the iMac to the network using a hard wired Ethernet cable.  I have tried resetting everything possible, from hubs to routers to the Mac itself and it just will not connect to the network through Ethernet any longer.  I am now a very frustrated Apple user especially when the support site says I can't use the fast path support because my product was manufactured 5 years ago...I just bought it at BestBuy yesterday.  All other computers and itechnology in the house are connecting via wifi and Ethernet without any issue except from my new iMac boat anchor.  Anybody who can help me???  Thanks

John, thanks for the email so quickly.
I too hope I haven't tried "everything" either but I am reasonably technical.  I had done what you suggested to do before but I did both again.
Ethernet is yellow in the left side bar.  In the right pane it's status says Connected but then below it says "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
I have tried the assist me menu and Network Status has Ethernet Green, Network settings Yellow, ISP Green, and Internet and Server Red and Failed for both.  I have turned things off and on, checked cables, deleted all locations and tried restting them up but to no avail.  I even disconnected everything and connected the mac directly into the cable modem itself and the thing still will not connect.
    Thoughts???

  • IMac to PC networking - 1903 Date Problem

I am running a G4 iMac that is networked to a PC with Windows XP. All file sharing works well, but when I use the iMac to read files from my PC, all the networked files show up as created in 1903!! I have tried copying the files to the Mac, opening them and re-saving them but the date does not change. What am I doing wrong? How can I get these dates to be accurate?

Use the 'touch' command to change file access and modification times.
Run terminal to bring up a command line.
Typing in 'touch' at the command line will bring up a list of command parameters. For more detailed documentation, then type 'man touch' at the command line.

  • Will server search and import existing profiles from Imacs on the network

We are in the process of installing new imacs into an existing windows 2003 SB network.  Today the SMB server is the DNS server however I have bought a mac server in order to take the SMB out of the loop and change it over to simply being a file server for reference via VM's using Windows 7 of the old Windows PC's that the Imacs are replacing.
We currently have 4 imacs in the network already and have their own profiles as per the standard start up.  The question is will the mac server when configured as the replacement DNS server find and import the existing Imac profiles or will they need to be recreated via the server

The executable will be run on the client computer, if you acces them by a shared drive or something.
But download time can be noticable, but it shouldn't cost performance, be aware that all users will share the same app.ini file.

  • IMac looks for networks while connected

I have a brand new iMac 21.  It's connected wirelessly to my Airport Extreme on a closed secure network.  It connects fine, but when I click on the WiFi icon, the first line "WiFi: Looking for networks" is grayed out, but with a spinning gray circle on the far right.  I can access the Internet and my network has a check mark by it, so why is the iMac looking for networks?  Also, when the iMac wakes up from sleep mode, I get a window saying that it's looking for a network, even though I can see that it's already connected to my network.  I checked the network preferences on my Macbook, and they're exactly the same as on the iMac, but the Macbook seems to know that it's connected.  I checked the "ask to join new networks" box if that makes any difference.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

If it is constantly searching for networks every five seconds or so, then it is the bluetooth - wifi problem discussed on other threads. I find that system preferences > network and clicking at the bottom on the 'Show wi-fi status in menu bar' button to switch it off, and then back onto the menu bar, solves the problem. Sometimes on waking I lose wi-fi completely and have to reload, but that's infrequent.
Hopefully Apple will come up with a solution soon.

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • Both my Macbooks can no longer see my iMac on the network

No clue what changed or what happened. I had it set up fine and up until the last day or so, my Imac was showing up in the Finder shared section on both of my Macbooks and I was doing backups via Airport from the Macbooks to the external drive connected to my iMac. Now the whole thing is down. No shared section on either of the Macbooks and the Time Machine backups fail because it can't find my external drive.
In my file sharing preferences on the iMac, I have my LaCie external drive and my public folder listed as shared folders, and I have my account, the user accounts from both Macbooks, Users, Administrators and Everyone selected under users with read and write access.
I have no idea what went wrong and would sure appreciate any advice on this. Thanks Much.

This is just a hint. Have you recently rename your Computer Name? I have had a problem to see PC computers on my local intranet. I got no problem to connect to all PCs thru IP address but they were not visible on my mac mini or iBook under Shared. When I renamed my Computer Name back to one which I've had before everything come back to normal. (I've had renamed name of my mac mini which I used to configure my AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express base stations. My guess, network configuration in Leopard is very sensitive to computer which you using in the first place to configure your local network) This is just a guess, see if it will help you. Good luck!

  • How can I write a script to regularly transfer a file between two iMacs on a network?

I keep all our family photo files (iPhoto Library) on my wife's iMac.  Because we can't share the library simultaneously, I want to automate the copying of the library from her iMac to mine say, once a week in the wee hours (it's a big file). Both of our iMacs are on our common (wired) home network.  Is there a way to write a script that will accomplish that?  If it matters, we both maintain independent external backup drives and use 'Time Machine' judiciously.  Thanks in advance for any guidance!!!

  • Can't login on iMac to Local Network accounts on server

I'm a volunteer at the Marjorie P Lee retirement community. We had two iMacs that were available for residents to use. We recently bought two more iMacs and a Mac Mini Server. The goal is to make it possible for residents to use any of the computers and have their files available.
I have set up the server and did the updates so the machine is running 10.9.4 and the latest update of the server software. I have enabled Open Directory and created a couple of Local Network User accounts for testing. I also enabled file sharing and Time Machine backups.
One of our older iMacs is running OS X 10.6.8. On this iMac, I went to the Users & Groups pane and under Login Options I connected to the Network Account Server. I got the green dot indicating that the connection was successful. I then enabled network logins. This worked; I am now able to login on this iMac to the local network accounts on the server.
I did exactly the same thing on one of our brand new iMacs. Again I got the green dot indicating a successful connection to the server. Unfortunately I have been unable to login to the local network accounts from this machine. When I try to login, the password shakes as though I had entered the wrong password.
What do I need to do to fix this?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Most likely your Imac is using g or n to broadcast wirelessly while your router is using b.  Solution update your router.

  • How to share iPad Photos and iMac iPhoto via network?

I've recently added an iPad 2 to my Apple system.  Can anyone tell me how to access my iMac's iPhoto library (OSX 10.7.2) with the iPad 2's Photo's app (or other app) via my Apple Extreme home network?  I'm running iOS 5 on the iPad.
It's clearly possible (and I've done it) to share iPhoto libraries between computers running OSX and iPhoto over my network.  On my iMac, iPhoto Preferences>Sharing opens a window with clear options to enable this service:
However, I have yet to find the app on the iPad 2 which will perform the same function so I can link libraries between my desktop and my iPad.  Is there one, or a third party app for this?
    Thanks

In general the simplest way would be to store the document in iCloud, and use iCloud to access the document from both your iMac and iPad.
But your post above says you're running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.4).  Snow Leopard is now two years old.  I'm not sure it supports iCloud.

  • How do I see my iMAC on the network

I have both PC as well as iMAC connected on the network. I can see the PC on my iMAC - no problems. But I can't see the iMAC on my PC. I 'shared' my files on the MAC for FTP access (tried with AFP & SMB as well), then browsed the network places on my PC (as well as put the ftp address), but can't see the MAC.

I'm thinking that it might be the same as my problem. Have you shut down/restarted your iMac at any point after successfully sharing files? If yes, then you have to go back to -system preferences-sharing-internet sharing- and click on it again to start it up even though the box is checked and it looks like it is on. I shut down my iMac every night (to save on electricity) so this somehow disconnects my saved network.

  • Am I able to add a second display (LED TV) to my iMac via my network?

I have a 21.5 inch Late 2009 iMac (too old for Mirroring to Apple TV). I would like to be able to use my LED TV as a second display, so that effectively I can view non-iTunes media in my lounge room. I currently have the iMac connected to an Airport Extreme via Ethernet cable. I have an Airport Express also connected to the Extreme via Ethernet cable in Bridge Mode in the lounge room. I am wondering if it is possible to connect the TV via Ethernet cable to the Express (the TV has a network connection input), and then be able to use the TV as a second display for the iMac. I know I can do this if I connect the TV directly to the iMac via Ethernet, just am unable to determine if I can do it via the two Airport devices - I guess I am wanting to make the TV a "Network Display". I do also have an Apple TV connected via HDMI cable to that TV. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The easiest way would be to set up a seperate user account. That user would have their own iTunes with their own Library.
