  • Qosmio X870 shutting down without reason - low perfs

    Hello everyone,
    I have recently bought a Qosmio X870 116 and I am extremely disappointed. It is supposed to be a gaming computer but I can barely run a single game without the PC crashes. I tried to run recent games such as Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2. During the downloading of the GW2 launcher, the PC crashed after a while, shutting down without any reason.
    I eventually managed to install the game on my laptop anyway but I still encounter some issues since as I play, after not more than two minutes, the game slows down, the frame per second rate drops dramatically to 2 fps and the laptop crashes again.
    I think there is a problem with the graphic card or the fan because eveytime I try to launch a game, the fan starts to run very fast and noisely.
    I thought it also may be a problem with the Nvidia technology because of their Optimus service on their recent graphic cards, therefore I tried to "prioritize" the use of my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M instead of the chipset Intel HD Family 4000 used in the laptop, by right-clicking on the GW2 icon and opening the NVIDIA panel to select the "Nvidia High performances" option.
    Unfortunately, the game still crashes after a few minutes. I obviously updated the drivers for the Nvidia but still, it doesnt work.
    Moreover, the laptop seems pretty slow to me even while browsing on the Internet and the desktop which is rather worrying since the laptot has 12 GB memory.
    Does anyone has an idea what is the reason for such low performances?
    Thanks by advance.

    Try this with your video card and power settings:
    Go to NVIDIA Control Panel (right click on desktop, 8th selection down), select/click
    First tab {Adjust image settings with preview}:
    Select: {Use my preference emphasizing: Performance}
    **select "performance"**
    Hit {Apply}
    Second tab {Manage 3D settings}
    **It gets technical but make sure it is exactly as I say it or it will not work. **
    Go to Subtab 1{Global Settings}:
    {Preferred graphics processor:}
    **SELECT "High-performance NVIDIA processor** *(see Note 1 at end)*
    Settings: *Again,it has to be exact; first phrase in { } is "Features" the first column, second phrase in { } is the "Settings", the second column:
    **Everything is on a drop-down menu if you click on the {Feature} name and mouse over the {Setting} option**
    {Ambient Occlusion} {Performance}
    {Anisotropic filtering} {Off}
    {Antialiasing-FXAA} {On}
    {Antialiasing-Gamma correction} {On}
    {Antialiasing-Mode} {Off}
    *Grayed out* {Antiliasing-Setting} {None}
    *Grayed out* {Antiliasing-Transparency} {Off}
    {CUDA-GPUs} {All}
    {Maximum pre-rendered frames} {4}
    {Multi-dislpay/mixed-GPU acceleration} {Single display performance mode} (see Note 2)
    {Power management mode] [Prefer maximum performance] **a no brainer but its default is not this setting**
    {Texture filtering-Anisotropic sample opt...} {On}
    {Texture filtering-Negative LOD bias} {Allow}
    {Texture filter-Quality} {Quality}
    {Texture filtering-Trilinear optimization} {On}
    {Threaded optimization} {Auto}
    {Triple buffering} {Off}
    {Vertical sync} {Off}
    *Hit "Apply" before moving to the third tab {Set PhysX Configuration}
    Third tab {Set PhysX Configuration}:
    *ONLY SETTING IN TAB*
    Select "GeForce GTX 670M"
    Hit {Apply}
    **NOT "CPU" and, NEVER "Auto-select (recommended)"** (see Note 1, again)
    Go to Power Settings in your Control Panel:
    Choose a Power Plan Option (Search "power" in search bar, choose the "Power plan", second selection under "Power Options" page.
    *GO WITH THE HIGH PERFORMANCE OPTION, VERY CRITICAL!!!!* By default it is on "balance" (I believe)
    Note 1: As far as I can tell the OS (Win8) can't transition like Win7 did between CPU and graphics card. Therefore every time graphics get going hard enough to demand the cards performance, the frames per rate stops or slows.
    Note 2: Select other option if setup is different.

    ACtually I really really don't want to use it anymore. I'm so disappointed.

    Some friends have told me that their phone can last up to 2 days without charging??
    If they are getting 2 days without charging, it's unlikely they use their device very much.
    A full day is pretty good....and if I'm careful, I can easily get a full day of usage.
    For me, normal is charging the iPhone mid afternoon at work, but I use it a lot.
    My typical usage is 35 mins of listening to podcasts, checking email, checking my RSS feed, and checking a few apps while I ride my bike when I first get up.  Then listening to several podcasts at work.
    I typically stream music while working out during my lunch hour and use the Men's Health Fitness app to track my progress.
    By about 2pm I'm ready to charge the device as it's getting low (somewhere between 20% and 50%).
    I leave bluetooth, Wi-FI, and location services turned on all the time.
    Personally, I just do not see the point in going into settings to turn on the feature when I need it... just too much hassle.  All of my listening to podcasts and music is via Bluetooth.
    I know I'm not the heaviest user, but I just do not see how anyone can realistically make it two days on a single charge, it makes me think they simply do not use the features of the device and would be just as well served with a basic or feature phone.

  • IMac unexpectedly shutting down

    My iMac has begun to shut down unexpectedly, repeatedly. I've been struggling with this issue for two days now and so can describe the typical pattern of odd behavior. I use my computer in the office of my private English school. For several hours in the day I teach in the classroom next to my office and simply leave the computer on so I can pick up research and materials design where I left off. A couple of evenings ago I returned to my desk to find the Mac shut down. Odd, but not scary -- yet. I entered the Twilight Zone when I tried starting it up. It went something like this:
    1st try- Partial startup, screen lights up, no chime, shutdown.
    2nd try- Complete startup, no user apps launched, shutdown after less than a minute.
    3rd try- Complete startup, begin cautiously checking for damage and causes, shutdown after several minutes.
    4th try- Begins as 3rd try (above), checked Console log, attempted to set up diagnostics programs to determine cause, shutdown in about 20 minutes or so.
    This basic pattern (1~4, above) has occurred three times so far. In addition, there have been other (less regular or perhaps more widely spaced timing?) instances. Also, I successfully booted from an external firewire drive dedicated to TechTools as an "edrive" and running Mac OS Tiger same as my Mac. To my horror, shutdown occurred after about 10 minutes booted in the external edrive! It was very late so I left it shut down and went to bed (for a very poor night's sleep!). Early the next morning, in my second attempt booted in the external edrive, I got a diagnostics utility launched (DiskWarrior) which found no directory damage on the internal drive! I decided to try another one (TechTools) and the Mac shutdown again while testing was going on!
    At this point I had lessons I started the Mac and let it sleep while and put the whole mess aside till evening. I pondered everything I thought might be wrong. The Mac was still up and sleeping several hours later. Yet, when I tried to use it, it started the pattern of shutting down described above. I disconnected all peripherals and freed up ports, and tried agin.
    Temperature is usually under control as I have designed an effective constant airflow system for my office that incorporates fans which keep air moving, so no dead air can collect in the space behind the Mac. In addition, I reposition my desk according to the season; now it is by a north window with no direct sunlight and which I keep cracked open to the cold winter air which bathes the back of the computer constantly. One cool Mac. Of course, if internal components, such as the sensor responsible for monitoring heat, are defective, this will not matter.
    I searched the Internet using various search strings, both describing my problem and using log data copied from Console. I checked this Mac forum and tried 3 times to post a message (with one successful post, but to the wrong section!). I have read Tech blogs and everything else I can between shutdowns.
    This message was written and saved several times. Any ideas?

    Hi Miriam:
    Thanks for taking the time for this. I have benefited as a lurker from help you have given to others. Thank you, always.
    I replaced the power unit over a year ago (I believe) supplied by mail from Apple. I have the exact records, but it would take too much time to dig them up and I am under the shutdown gun right now. Also, I am typing as fast as my chubby little fingers can hit the keys so there will be typos: apologies. I will dig out l those records after I get this email off to you and set them aside for my next post.
    Against all my better instincts I decided to try and cure the problem by upgrading the OS and am now running Mac OS 10.5.2 (see below). Immediately after the OS upgrade the shutdown problem reoccurred once, then disappeared. If it were not for that one occurrence I would have called it cured. I decided to wait and see. The computer shut down unexpectedly a couple of more times, but randomly and infrequently, not following the pattern I outlined originally so I just kept observing it. As of today, the full-blown problem has returned, as originally described, again, as follows:
    While using any application, or even left unattended with no application running, with nothing connected to the ports, the computer shuts down as if a kill switch had be pushed. (Unlike before the OS upgrade, no kernal error report appears.) Upon first restart attempt, all sounds indicate restart is happening normally, but before the screen lights up it shuts down again. This incomplete startup happens once, then on the second attempt, it starts up normally, if somewhat slowly. After some time (15~30 minutes or so?) it shuts down again (I'll try to set a stopwatch on that).
    The only user alteration of the system software immediately previous to this new round of shutdowns was allowing an Apple auto-update (Safari). As far as general heat issues are concerned, I have a temperature monitor application installed and keep an eye on it. Also, I take environmental measures to keep the work area cool and cool air moving around the CPU. At the moment Istat Pro 4.6 (newest, today) reports: CPU 75 degrees, Hard Drive 53, Atilla (my internal drive name) 61. I know this is different than the power unit overheating problem you mentioned.
    I am beginning to suspect malware and will pursue that angle when I get time (got classes to teach for the next 8 hours). Hardware information you requested (or more, perhaps) is below (clipped from System Profiler).

  • Rev. B iMac Unexpectantly Shutting Down

    Since June of 05, my iMac has run almost continually with out a hitch. I get back from a 9 day vacation and see that my computer has shut itself down (I know it was working, because I was able to iChat the computer from where I was the night before returning).
    Since Sunday, my computer can not stay on. It will shut down as soon as the login screen appears, 20 minutes into a session, 2 hours into a session, or longer ((overnight, sometime between lunch time and dinner time when I'm not at the house))
    I have read and done the suggested 'fix' from Apple with no luck:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86817
    I thought it might be a RAM problem, so I took out the 1GB stick I purchased last year. It seemed to do the trick, and worked for as long I was working with it last night, then I come down this morning, and the machine had shut itself off. So I'm thinking it wasn't the RAM.
    Where should I go and look next to isolate the problem.
    My Mac is not a Revision A that the "known recall" issue with the mid-plane and or power source. However, it is in the upper range of one of those serial number ranges.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    CP Staley

    Not to sound like a lecture, but who knows that happened when you left your Mac unattended for 9 days. No matter what, I always am sure to shut down and unplug my computers when I am gone for more than 2-3 days. It is just the smart thing to do, even if you have a UPS. There is no good reason to leave your computer running when there is no chance that you will be using it since you are not home.
    Take a look at this Apple FAQ and see if anything there helps. I doubt that it will, but Apple will ask you what you have done and try to walk you though these steps anyway, so do it before you call them so you can say you tried.
    I think that you have the same problem I did with a bad PSU and/or midplane. It certainly sounds like the same issues that led to my needing those replaced.
    Try the steps above and then call Apple if they do not work. They will ask you for a credit card since it is outside of the 90 days tech support, but if you insist that it is a hardware issue, they will walk you through a few things to verify that and autorize you to take it in for repairs.

  • My 21" iMac unexpectedly shuts down

    I have a 6 month old 21" iMac i5. Around two months ago it started shutting down completely as I was using it. If it turn it on inmediatelly o in a short period of time, its more likely to shut down again also in a short period of time. But if I disconnect it for a while and then turn it back on, it will work for a longer period of time, but later on it will eventually shut down. I've taken it to the authorized shop where i bought it from (I live in Ecuador) and twice they ran a 3 day test but they didn't get any results and told me the computer never shut down. Brought it back to my office and the problem persists. I've read other people are having the same issue but I haven't seen they have solved the problem. I am really concerned about this because the people at the authoriced store told me that apple won't make the warranty work as long as the tests don't show any problems. This iMac is my main working tool and every time I've taken it to have those tests run I lose a lot of time and work.
    Hopefully someone will have the solution to this problem.

    Hi there ,

    nana4design,
    some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect.

  • Front row shut down without reasons

    i use front row for many time now but one day unexpectally it shut down when i m in the menus of it
    i had to restore osx , twice because it re happened two times
    how can i fixe it?thanks

    I'm not positive about the rear power button but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis.
    Why not have the Mac Mini turn on at a specified time in the morning and have it shut itself down at a specified time in the evening? This way you never have to worry about it.
    I am using my Mac Mini much like you are and have my Energy Saver control panel automatically start up and shut down via the "Schedule" settings.
    I have my Mini plugged into my AV Stereo unit so when I want to watch regular TV on the screen, I just change the AV input to Video 1 (TV in my case). When I want to view the Mini on the screen, I change the AV input to Video 3 (in my case). The sound is also hooked up through the Stereo connections for Video 3.

  • Mac shuts down without reason - mid use

    I have had my G4 coming up for 4 years. I have noticed in past week that it shuts down - (showing 'power save' on screen) mid use. Is this possibly the internal battery needing replacement - or does it sound like some other problem? (It does not happen in any particular programme - although I notice it when using outlook express for mac - as this is what I am on alot of the time). I have checked all power/other cables/connectors - and all seems Ok there.

    Hello! Have you checked the power settings in the
    control/pref panels to make sure they're not set to
    sleep. Tom
    Hi Tom,
    I have checked the 'energy saver' in prefs (is this where you meant?)... I have both OSX & classis both set to 'switch off after in-active use' to NEVER. I am scratching my head about this one as this is the first time this has happened - and I rarely change my prefs settings.
    I read the article on re-setting the PMU, however I do not like to mess with the inside of my mac.
    If the problem gets worse or persists I will take it to my mac man.
    But if cost can be avoided and there is a simple troubleshooting route- would like to try that first!
    Thanks for your interest/help.

  • Cs3 shutting down without reason

    hi, i use ps cs3 on my notebook with 2 Gb ram. i didn't install a new update or something else recently but while i'm working ps freeze and shuts down by itself. i'm not able to save my project. and it also slows down or sometimes freezes when i'm trying to open a new or existing file. it seems like a memory problem but i've been using for 3 years on this computer and this problem is shown up a few months ago. it's really annoying. i restart my computer, it's useful for a short time then it shuts down again again and again. i removed and re-installed ps cs3 but that problem is going on. i need your help and explanations to solve this. thnx

    Do you get an error message when this happens? Or something in the event log?
    Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
    You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
    This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.    A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • Woo Audio WA7 & iMac, unexpected shut-down

    Hi everyone, my iMac feeds audio to a headphone amplifier, Woo Audio WA7, using USB 2.0 cable. After listening to music from iTunes for about half-hour or so, the iMac often turns itself off unexpectedly. I can only restart the iMac after disconnecting the power & press the power button for about 30 seconds & connect the power again. However, if the amplifier is not in used/disconnected from the USB port, the iMac works just fine for hours. Any idea? I guess this is related to USB port? Is there a limit of what can be used in USB port? Thank you.

    There isn't too much you can do with that one other than taking it into an AASP or Apple Store. If your profile is serious (it says Brand new three months ago) then it's under warranty of course. If it's slightly less than 90 days old or under AppleCare then call AppleCare for some assistance.
    About the only thing I'd really try is attempting a restart in Safe Mode. If that doesn't do anything then my guess is the main logic board has crashed or the power supply. If you need links here is the Apple Online Service Assistant for locating a store or AASP and if you have AppleCare use the AppleCare Contact Info link.

  • Intel Imac Unexpectedly shuts down...

    I work for a company that has bought several Intel Imacs and most are working fine, but we have two that while the user is working will just immediately power off, and then start back up (I have configured energy saver to restart on power failure). Both of the troublesome machines (like all the computers here) are running on UPS boxes, so we are not having an issue with power.
    Both macs have been fully updated with OS X 10.4.9 and all other system updates.
    Are there a string of bad power supplies that are causing this issue, or is it potentially something else? These machines were just installed in the last week. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Intel Imac Duo Core   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2 GB Ram

    Next you should check the ram modules as one or both modules may have become disloged during shipping. Use this article to help you reinstall the ram.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303084
    If your handy with a screwdriver you can do this your self! Make sure that you reinstall both modules pressing firmly and seating them into place then close the two plastic eject levers and replace the cover. If this does not solve the issue I would give Apple a call. There has been a few reports of power supply issues but as you know Apple will make then good or replace them!

  • What should I do with an iMac that shuts down unexpectedly, freezes in an application and is difficult to reboot intermittently.

    In the last three day the iMac has unexpectantly shut down, stopped responding, posted four panic reports and has been very difficult to reboot without several attempts.  But then will go through a day without any problems.  This morning it just stopped doing anything.  Unplugged it from the wall, waited several hours and then rebooted without a problem.  Go figure!   What are my next steps??

    If you have AppleCare, call them up & let them deal w/it.
