IMac unresponsive
For starters, this concerns an i7 2TB 4GB RAM 27 inch iMac:
After loading over 10000 photos into iPhoto, the computer quit responding to wireless keyboard and magic mouse commands. After a hard reboot, the screen displays everything normally. It shows mouse movement normally yet there is no response when clicking on any pixels, including its inability to retrieve the hidden dock at the bottom of the screen. I never really looked at the bluetooth symbol before, but it is grayed with 3 black dots across it.
I just cannot tell if this is a RAM issue, Bluetooth issue, or something worse. After doing 15 hrs of video editing in FCP I hope to God this is not a drive failure of sorts.
At one point, I put my Tech Tools Deluxe disc in the DVD drive and rebooted holding down the C key with no new result as the same scenario recurred.
HI,
*"It shows mouse movement normally yet there is no response when clicking on any pixels, including its inability to retrieve the hidden dock at the bottom of the screen."*
*"I never really looked at the bluetooth symbol before, but it is grayed with 3 black dots across it."*
The 3 black dots mean your iMac is communicating with your computer, read here. Make sure the mouse is turned on.
Bluetooth: About Bluetooth Icons
Try re-pairing your Bluetooth mouse with your iMac. Open System Preferences/Bluetooth. Delete the mouse from the Devices window. Now click: Set Up New Device and re-pair the mouse with the iMac. Restart your iMac and see if that makes a difference.
Also, the Bluetooth preference files could be corrupted.
Go to /Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file to the Trash and see if that helps.
Make sure the batteries in the mouse are charged. Open System Preferences/Mouse
Battery level is displayed bottom left corner in that window.

I have a 5 month old iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.
Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854 -
This started yesterday. I switch on the computer, go into my User account and the Finder icon was bouncing in the deck while a window flashed on about Restoring Windows though you could never click on it because...it kept flashing. The folders on my desktop disappeared so I went into a secondary user account and opened it to find a virus scan. That user account had no issue with the bouncing Finder icon. I downloaded ClamXav and ran it but that being a rarely used user account, it found nothing infected. I went back in in Safe Mode and was able to see my invisible files but the Finder being unresponsive, I could basically only look at them. Also, I couldn't activate ClamXav after downloading it in that user account. All it did was allow me to see my files.
This morning, while I switched on the computer the Safe Mode came on without me holding down the Shift key. Sadly, it didn't get past the third of the little progress bar before shutting down the computer. This happened trying to open either user accounts. I'm shut out. I'm so shocked this happened. I called the ISP and he said everything was normal at his end, naturally in spite of a lot of freezing and not allowing more than one device on wifi at a time. This is an upgraded Internet service after moving to a new place. Otherwise for the few moments it lights up to show me the two users at log in, nothing is visually wrong.
If this has ever happened to anyone, please enlighten me. I've called a Mac repair shop and expect to bring my iMac in. It's barely two years old. : (When posting in Apple Communties/Forums/Message Boards.......It would help us to know which iMac model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.

New imac 24 inch unresponsive after leopard upgrade
I have installed leopard on all of my family's computers. My new 24 inch imac has become unresponsive after being on for about 24 to 36 hours. The only way to regain control is to hold in the power button for a few seconds and restart. The other computers in the family including a macbook pro, a G4 mirrored drive and an old ibook do not exhibit this problem. The imac is the only computer running time machine so I am wondering if this is what the problem is. I guess I can deactivate time machine and see what happens, however I like the time machine backup. Any thoughts?
Apple acknowledges there is a freezing problem with new 20" & 24" iMacs, most likely caused by the video drivers they shipped with. Apple released an update just today that MIGHT be the fix for the problem. Go to Software Update in your system preferences and download it now.
I had the same problem with my 24" iMac. It would lock up specifically when I was browsing a lot of photos through Preview. I installed the update and tried to replicate the freeze, but it didn't reoccur. Apple wasn't very forthcoming on what the update fixed, but I'm hoping that is it. -
I clicked on a link and immediately got "Warning: Unresponsive script." Clicking Stop Script or Continue does not make a difference. It just froze or got hung.
I just got your email asking me to confirm the account I created with the username marlener by clicking on the link provided on the email. I clicked on it but it's not going anywhere because my Mozilla browser has frozen. Like I said, I can't even close it. I attempted to restart my iMac but it won't because it says I have to close Mozilla first.
I often get the Unresponsive script warning now that I've switched to iMac. I don't remember getting this msg too often on my Windows desktop. Is Mozilla more incompatible with iMac compared to Windows?
The screen has now turned white but the box with the warning msg is still up and I still am unable to close the browser.
The menu at the top doesn't show so there is no Help window for me to open.Firefox may become very slow to respond because of badly coded JavaScript causing infinite loops on certain websites [28]. This problem can usually be cleared by closing the window or tab for that website. You can also temporarily disable JavaScript to view the problem site, but the website may not work without JavaScript. Read Firefox CPU usage for more information and also see the related article,Unresponsive Script Warning.
If the web site hangs Firefox (you can't even exit Firefox) try running in Safe Mode and see if you can get an Unresponsive Script Warning. Watch the status bar and see if this frequently occurs while it mentions a specific URL. If so, try blocking that URL using a content-blocker such as Adblock Plus. The problem URL may be fetching an advertisement or side panel that you can do without.
If none of this helps, try using a different browser (such as IE or Opera) or try accessing the site at another time. This might help you determine if the problem lies with Firefox, a poorly designed website, or content that changes over time, such as ads. -
2009 imac desktop, is unresponsive,slow and error's
For some reason my imac is slow, unresponsive and error's come up.
When checking the drive, under utilities, "Drive appears ok".
I have check for virus, none detected.
I have run permissions.
And the internet loads pages slow or not at all, and or error message.
I hope there is something I can do to resolve this?
I cannot afford a new computer.
So I'm hoping someone can give me some advise.
Any advise or tips to resolve will be appreciated greatly.
Thank you in advance,
JohnThe anti virus was Sopho's, and I uninstalled it with app cleaner.
Unfortunately I did not follow the developers instruction for uninstall.

My late 2009 model iMac is running slow, become unresponsive for 10-20 seconds, giving me the spinning color pin wheel. I posted my EtreCheck below. It shows that ProPresenter is clogging about 62% of my CPU, but even when I am not running ProPresenter, maybe typing a document on Pages or typing a link on Safari, it will freeze up and hang for 10-20 seconds and give me the color pin wheel. This is becoming real annoying. I also use it for video editing using Final Cut 7, and its obnoxious every few minutes it lags.
Thanks for the help!

Intel based imac becomes unresponsive
My imac becomes unresponsive several times per day, requiring me to power off with button held down. Can anyone help me.
when this happens can you move the cursor?

Imac wakes from sleep but is unresponsive
My i5 imac with 10.6.8 has recently and randomly started being unresponsive upon waking from sleep. it does not happen all of the time and I can't find a combo of apps or other events that cause the issue to happen. it's only been in the last few weeks and the only changes I've made are the installation of spotify, update of flash and update of pdf reader.
When my imac is asleep I can press a key on the keyboard or move the magic mouse and the screen wakes right up. the mouse cursor moves around the screen but nothing is clickable and no keyboard commands work. if my laptop is connected via disk sharing I can continue to access the files, it's like everything is fine but I can't give input. the dock doesn't pop up and I can't force quit anything. I ran disk utility and it suggested I restart from the dvd and repair the disk. after doing that the HD continues to test fine, when I verify it there are no errors or other things that need fixing. I've reset NVRAM several times and the problem persists. a hard reset is my only way to regain control and then the computer will work fine for anywhere from hours to days. Everything I search for seems to be a different version sleep issues. I have no video distortion, no other problems. can anyone help me out?
thanks!!
MarkHowdy there Mark,
I would suggest a few steps here.
First I would start with resetting the SMC on the computer with this article Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then reset the PRAM if the issue is not resolved:
About NVRAM and PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
I would also perform a safeboot to troubleshoot this as well.
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

All the very best,

Premiere Pro CS5.5 unresponsive on iMac
I am experiencing a number of issues with PP on my new iMac 21.5 i7 12 GB RAM 1TB SATA. This is certainly not the most powerful machine to edit AVCHD footage, but that's what I can afford. Now the problem I want to report is not that AVCHD footage is playing back erratically (it is!) but that PP seems sometimes to just go into the 5th dimension and becomes totally unresponsive: I move the cursor in the timeline, double-click on clips in the timeline or the project explorer, switch to another sequence, press on buttons, etc and absolutely nothing will happen. If I check the Activity Monitor, PP does not seem to use more that a few % of CPU, there is no apparent disk activity (maybe a spike here and there, but I could not guaranty this is coming from PP).
In those cases, if I quit PP, it is labeled as "PP is not responding" in the Activity Monitor and will stay like that for a few minutes until it eventually quits.
That is becoming a real concern...
Anybody has experienced anything like this or could suggest some fixes?Just to make sure: I am not talking about painfully slow playback or reaction when moving from one AVCHD clip to the next. These are totally different behaviors, which I would characterize as CPU overwhelming (the floating CPU activity monitor would show all 8 virtual cores maxed out). Those, I understand.
What I am talking about is, in the middle of editing a sequence, say, I move to a different clip on the sequence with my timeline playhead and...nothing happens. The playhead is where I want it to be, but neither the program monitor, nor the source monitor reflect any of this. I can select or double click a clip in the project manager, do whatever I want: nada, brain dead. And all the while, the CPU activity is close to zero, there is no disk activity whatsoever, there is plenty of available memory. PP is just gone.
That sounds like a bug to me. Nothing that has to do with hardware limitation or this kind of thing. But before I report it or try to raise the attention of Adobe (wish me good luck), I'd like to gather some evidence that I am not the only poor ******* to have to deal with this.
I'll certainly try the transcoding thing. -

5.37 GB Page-ins
197 MB Page-outsGiven the circumstances I agree taking it to an Apple Store might be the best way to address the problems with it. Manually eradicating all the software contributing to its unacceptable performance will be time-consuming and tedious. If it were mine there is no question I'd erase it and reconfigure it from the ground up. That would be less time-consuming and more likely to be successful, but it's also tedious.
And I do agree with a previous respondent that he could use some more RAM.
So do I. 2 GB is the absolute minimum for Yosemite to even run, and it won't run well with that little. That Mac can address as much as 6 GB, which would probably be acceptable if you were to reconfigure it and leave out the garbage software causing and / or contributing to poor performance.
Lastly, you have to evaluate how much time and money you are willing to spend on a Mac that's nearly eight years old. Age itself doesn't kill Macs, but eight years is about as much economic life that can be expected from any computer. Among the limitations that cannot be overcome are its Core 2 Duo CPU and RAM. Even 6 GB memory isn't all that much any more.
Having said that, even a brand new fully configured top of the line Mac Pro would run poorly, if at all, given the software that's on your Dad's Mac. Intego, Norton/Symantec, MacKeeper, Cocktail... all that stuff is utter garbage and there is too much of it to mention. Personal testing of Intego alone on a brand new Mac containing nothing other than one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so extreme no knowledgeable Mac user would consider it acceptable.
For reference, here is the procedure I would recommend:
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac. You will need a suitable external hard disk drive for this purpose. One with adequate capacity can be purchased for about $60.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
Always obtain software from authorized sources such as the Mac App Store, original installation media (CD or DVD), or from the developer's authorized download source. Never obtain software from download aggregator websites such as C net dot com, Mac Update dot com, Soft onic dot com, random popups that may appear while browsing the Internet, or other sources that primarily rely upon junk product advertisements for their revenue. Such sites are not to be trusted, and are the most common means of distributing adware or other junk you probably do not want.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device. -
After waking from sleep, my iMac (Lion) is unresponsive. The mouse moves, but when I click things it won't open them.
This has happened EVERY time the iMac goes to sleep for the last few days.. the only way I have found to resolve the issue is to manually restart the computer each time via the button on the back of the iMac.
Any and all help is appreciated!
ThanksFWIW, I never sleep my machines or their HDs, just their displays and never have an issue waking up the displays, usually run 24/7. Give that a shot.

FaceTime is unresponsive after launch on iMac
FaceTime is unresponsive after launch.
Using an iMac running OS X 10.7.5
2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
FaceTime software came with iMac.
Originally worked, then didn't, then did, now doesn't again.
Software launches, no window for FaceTime, menu shows, sometimes preferences is greyed out, sometimes it's not. When preferences is available, it is also unresponsive when selecting it.
I checked keychain setting (com.apple.facetime: registrationV1)
I tried launching from application folder, dock, launchpad. Same results.
Anyone experiencing similar problem?? Thanks.Okay, sorry! Just trying to help.
I now realize that 1.0.2 is the version for Snow Leopad, which is what I am running. 1.1.1 is the current version for Lion. -

Back up everything now, then boot from your recovery partition and see if Disk Utility can repair your internal hard drive. IF it can;t you may be looking at a new drive.
There was an Apple repair extension program for the 1TB Seagate hard drives in 2009 27-inch iMacs but it has now expired. If you did not take advantage of that program, a failing HD could be the issues.
Adding RAM might help too, but you must get the hard drive issues sorted first.
