Imac USB not recognised

Hi everyone, my iMac does not recognise anything I plug into the USB- not my Garmin, nor Kindle, not even a USB memory stick. I have tried everything, it just doesn't see it! Anybody got any ideas? Thanking you in advance. karen

Could be simple Finder preferences causing you to not see drives on the desktop. By default, later versions of the Mac OS present an overly-clean Desktop by hiding all drives. I give this "feature" a rating of:
1) Make sure you are in the Finder ("Finder" appears next to the black Apple icon at the left end of your menubar).
2) select "Preferences" from the Finder menu and make sure the "General" tab is active
3) Check all the boxes at the top of that tab:
Now any mounted drive of server will appear on the Desktop. Not as pretty as the default but much better if you actually use the computer!

Thank you for your reply.  I know I can use a card reader however I don't see why I should when importing directly from my camera has worked reliably for years.  The process I use is simply connecting the digital output from my camera to the USB port on the iMac, which has previously automatically opened iPhoto ready for the import.  Now all of a sudden my iMac does not recognise the camera.  However if I connect in the same way to my MacBook then iPhoto opens automatically on the MacBook, recognises the camera and is ready for importing.  So whilst I know I can use a reader, or my MacBook I want to use my iMac in the same way that I have for years.  I can only assume that the settings on the iMac may have changed, but I cannot verify this.

    Hello,
My old emails address which I have used as my apple id for 10 years is being made redundant. I have changed the email address to a new gmail one and this is my new apple id. But my iMac has not recognised this. It keeps saying it wants the password for my old email address. I have seen some advice on these forums which suggest signing out of iCloud and then back in again. But when I start doing this it asks me if i want all the photos deleted that have not been downloaded onto the mac.
I have had an iCloud account for quite sometime and I'm afraid of losing everything in my cloud if i sign out and sign in with a new id.
    Is this fear realistic?
I know I can change back to my old email, sign out and then sign in wight he new one...
    Please help!

This did not work for me.  My old email account for iCloud still pops up on my screen every time I open my macbook.  I've deleted it, reset it, every thing I can think of and it still shows up.  I think six months of this is more than enough time to wait.

  • IPod locked and USB not recognised?

Someone please help!! I've been stuck with this problem for the last three days. Basically, what has happened is:
I changed my passcode for my iPod 5 the other day, then had to turn my iPod off as I was in school, I get to my iPod
at lunch and completely forget the passcode I changed it to. So now I'm locked out. This has happened before so
I knew what to do but this time, whenever I plug the USB into my laptop a little message just pops up saying
''USB not recognised''. I've tried absolutely everything to get this USB to work, I've even used different USBs
but barely any of them work or nothing comes up at all, like the laptop doesnt even know it's plugged in.
Is there any way I can restart my iPod without connecting it to iTunes or..? Does anyone know how to sort out
the USB? Sorry if this was a stupid question, I'm not very good at this sort of stuff.
    Thanks anyway,
    Kate x

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.

  • How can I wipe my imac hard drive if the imac is not recognising my keyboard

I fell into the same trap many others have with installing Windows via bootcamp & not setting up the hard drive formatting properly. So I've got a "Disk error. Press any key to restart message."
I've tried pressing command to get it to boot into OS and using 'c' to get it to boot from the OS cd. But my mouse and keyboard are not being recognised so these don't work.
I'm thinking that there must be a way to wipe the hard drive so I can reinstall OS. I thought it may work to connect it to another computer in target disk mode, but the iMac won't recognise me pressing T. Would anyone know whether there is any other way I can wipe the hard drive or otherwise get OS back running?

If your keyboard is a wireless one, wait until the startup chimes sound and then immediately press the appropriate key.
If your keyboard is a non-Apple one, then startup commands may not be embedded. In this case, using an Apple keyboard should work, such as the original one that came with the machine.
The key to hold down to bring up Startup Manager during booting is the Option key, not the Command key.

  • My 2010 imac does not recognise my time machine since I had the Seagate replacement hard drive. Any thought from anyone? The External hard drive is a 1 TB seagate

My iMac (2010 intel model) does not recognise or communicate with my external seagate drive as a time machine for back ups since I had the 1TB Seagate replacement hard drive as part of the replacement prgram with OSX LION 10.5.8 installed.
Is this because I need to update the time machine drive itself?

  • MSI E350IA-E45 USB Not recognised after cold boot.

Any one else have the same issue? My asus (Bluetooth) BT211 is not recognised after cold boot.
I also found the front USB's losing power when PC turned off. Connected them up to 5VSB to fix the issue.
MSI tech has not been back to me if this is a fault design, My motherboard issue or bios issue? Which also means to charge via front USB not work when turned off.
And to top it off I cannot find an answer to whether the Wake on Bluetooth USB is supposed to work?

How did you connect up the USB ports to 5VSB?
I have a similar issue with a newer MSI board and my USB mouse; I'd have to remove and re-insert the USB connection to the mouse after each cold boot in order for it to be recognized. I did a kludge fix by looping the mouse through a powered USB hub that supplies power to connected devices even when the PC is off.
This MSI board doesn't have a hardware jumper to enable 5VSB to the USB ports, unlike other motherboards. Also, none of the "green" or wakeup settings in the BIOS would cause the USB ports to have power when the PC is off.
So, how do you connect 5VSB to the USB ports? I've heard that crossing the regular 5V rail with 5VSB is a no-no, so I can't imagine how you did it.

  • IPhone "Usb Not Recognised"

Hi, I know there have been loads of similar questions since the iOS 5 and Itunes 10.6 update. I recently got a new laptop and have tried to plug my iPhone in for the first time yet a "Usb Device is not Recognised" keeps showing up. My iPhone does not show up in iTunes or on My Computer. I have tried and followed almost every trouble shooter including:

Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes + everything published by Apple Inc.
Deleted everything under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, restarted my laptop so that it reinstalled them then plugged in my iPhone.
I've stopped the Apple Mobile Device service, plugged my iPhone in, then restarted the service.  The same message pops up.
I'm pretty confident it is a problem to do with my iPhone 3G as I have tried it on multiple different computers with different Apple USB cords and it has always come up with the same message.

I have also found in my iTunes diagnostics log above ^^ it says that iTunes is not enabled by Windows Firewall, even though I have it enabled and followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2553 to enable it and the iTunes box was already checked. However, I do have 3rd party Antivirus software running (Norton Internet Security) Could this be conflicting with windows firewall? If so, how do I turn off the firewall in the Norton program so that it stops conflicting with it.
And if this is relevant, I also found that
Connection attempt to firmware update server was unsuccessful.
    The network connection timed out.
    Is is this important?
    Thanks in advance.

  • USB Not Recognised, even though it's not connected

    Hi
I have a Z1, my phone is not connected via USB (nothing it connected via USB) but my laptop keeps popping up with a warning message saying 'USB drive is not recognised. One of the USB drives connected to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it''
I didn;t think it was the phone, but when I visited a client she had the same error message pop up on her laptop as soon as I used my phone.
This is a bit strange, annoying as it pops up every 30 seconds and also a bit worrying.
    Any adivce would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • USB not recognised, or doesn;t regester at all

ok, so my iPod nano 2nd gen hasn't had a problem till now basically i plug it in and rather than opening itunes and syncing it either does nothing at all or comes up with the "USB device not recognised" message, i've updated all the drivers and still nothing
whats interesting is my actual USB ports dont seem to realise that they are infact USB 2.0 (when it did work it would say 'this device can perform faster...' no matter what port i used
The USB 2.0 thing might be related, but i just want the ipod to be able to sync and i really cant figure this one out
    Please Help
    Cheers

    Welcome to the discussions,
did you try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes up?
Does this happen when in headset mode?
A restore would be the next step if the reset does not work.

  • USB not recognised on XP, but works with Win 7

I wonder if anyone can help me?
I plugged my Iphone 3G into my Work computer (win 7) yesterday and installed Itunes with no problems. I didn't sync or anything, I authorised my work computer as well.
I then went home and the second I plugged it in to me Dell d610 on Win XP is says USB device not recognised. I've looked at various forums and have unplugged and turned off laptop and then uninstalled USB root hubs but it will not work.
I then come into work today and find it works fine on my work Win 7 machine.
It's not the computer as I have 3 win xp machines at home and it's the same with all of them, 1 of them was patched a few days ago but the others havn't been patched since October.
I wonder if anyone knows what it could be?

  • Seagate Desktop 500GB External Drive USB not recognised

When connecting this drive to either a PC running XP Pro or a Mac (MBP) running OS X 10.5 (Leopard) then I can access the drive without a problem. However, when I connect the drive to a Mac running OS X Server 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard Server) then the drive is not recognised. It does not even show up in the Mac's Disk Utility. I am able to connect USB Flash drives and other USB devices to the same Mac (a new Mac Mini 1TB server to be precise) which verifies USB connectivity.
It looks like there is a compatibility issue with OS X Snow Leopard. Do you work with Seagate at all to correct this issue? is there a firmware/OS X fix?

Have you contacted Seagate, as they manufacturer the hardware? Do they have any updated drivers or firmware or statement of compatibility regarding Snow Leopard on their website?

  • USB not recognising 5G or mini - fixed

There are lots of issues raised on this board about Windows + iTunes not recognising iPods, through USB. I managed to fix my problem tonight - posted here in case others find helpful.
Old iPod mini connected through Firewire OK. Daughter's new Video iPod (USB 2.0 only) did not get recognised by Windows, iPod Updater or ITunes; did multiple resets etc as per support pages - no joy. Also when I connected my old mini by USB rather than FW same problem happened. Hence issue not with Video iPod but with USB.
Through Device Manager uninstalled all USB devices, and let Windows reinstall them automatically. Fixed problem, iPod(s) then seen OK by Windows, updated and working.
Hope this helps someone else, as it is VERY frustrating to have a brand new iPod just sit there doing nothing.

    Hi
Try this (Windows XP) using admin privileges; worked for me
    1) Right click on My Computer
    2) Click Properties
    3) Click on Hardware tab
    4) Click on Device Manager
    5) Device Manager window opens with list of hardware components
    6) Expand (the + icon) the list of USB devices down at foot
    7) Right click on each USB item listed in turn, click Uninstall and confirm; or use the Action menu dropdown
    8) Exit Device Manager
    9) Windows auto hardware detect should now spring into life and you should see a lot of task bar message activity showing the USB items being detected and brought back into the system.
    Good luck.

  • My new iMac does not recognise an iso image of windows install disk in boot camp

I have the iso file for win7 64bit but when I run bootcamp I do not get the option to use a USB stick, so loaded the file onto a DVD-R disk.
When I load the disc the iMac tries to read it then stops and asks to me to put the disk in.
I am logged in to the machine as the administrator.
As a registered MSDN member I downloaded the iso file direct from the Microsoft MSDN website only a couple of weeks ago.
Any asisstance will be most appreciated, as I am a Mac newby and I really want to dump my old windows laptop and desktop machines1

  • Perplexing problem with iMac suddenly not recognising iWire access

I have a 24" iMac which has been running the most uptodate OSX Leopard software (I also have a PowerBook running the same, which is relevant).
Two days ago, my iWire connection to my broadband suddenly stopped. That is, when I opened up my iMac and it started searching for my iWire network, it found it, but then continually asks me for my WEP password, which I enter, then it says there a connection timeout and it will not connect to it.
Now, I know the Airport network is working fine, and the password hasn't changed, because I still get a perfect connection to my broadband via my Powerbook.
So, I've since tried a clean system install, and whenever the iMac searches for a computer link, it asks for a WEP password which I put in - accurately - and it no longer recognises it, even though I'd done nothing the change the settings. The only clue I have is that, during a software update, I do recall a firmware update for iWire, which I think I accepted. Has that caused it? But if so, why does it not affect my other PowerMac.
Am absolutely flummoxed and perplexed. Is this a firmware problem, in which case, how do I solve it?

    Hey Bushey,
I see that you had an issue with your aiport express not working, try this out:
Firstly, there are some issues with the airport utility for Leopard and AX.
you might want to try this:
    1) update the firmware of the AX to the latest by downloading the firmware update from the link below:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportexpressfirmwareupdate63formacosx.h tml
    2) IF it still persists, Using the Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow will sucessfully resolve the issue.
