Imac usb soundcard noise eliminated

i just want to share that i was having high pitched noise in my sound card on my late 2013 iMac with Logic and i was able to eliminate it by putting a ground adapter on the iMac power supply

Thanks for your help
I called the music store that i bought the card from and they recommended i look for the latest drivers. I found them, downloaded, installed, rebooted but the problem was still there. I tried headphones in the headphone socket of the card and i couldn't hear any noise which was a bit strange, as i would have expected some there too.
Anyway, i've decided to send the unit back and go for a more expensive item with balanced outputs. I hope that going to TRS balanced outs will improve over using RCA's. I'm thinking about a TC Konnekt 6 after reading great reviews and also i'm not using the firewire ports on my imac and i've already run out of usb's!

  • [SOLVED}_How can I configure ALSA to use usb-soundcard as default?

    Hello,
    I am trying to figure out how to configure ALSA correctly on my system. I have tried several times following those guides : ALSA_Arch_Wiki, ALSAProject_WIKI_Usb-audio and ALSAProject_hda-intel .
    As I understand there are three main files for alsa-configuration. /etc/modprobe.d/file_name.conf, /etc/asound.conf, ~/.asoundrc . Right now I have tried this:
    # This File is empty for NOW
    pcm.usb-audio {
        type hw
        card 0
    ctl.usb-audio {
        type hw
        card 0
    pcm.softvol {
        type softvol
        slave {
            pcm "dmix"
        control {
            name "Master"
            card 0
    pcm.!default {
        type plug
        slave.pcm "softvol"
    pcm.hda-intel {
        type hw
        card 1
    ctl.hda-intel {
        type hw
        card 1
    pcm.softvol {
        type softvol
        slave {
            pcm "dmix"
        control {
            name "Master"
            card 1
    pcm.!default {
        type plug
        slave.pcm "softvol"
    But after second reboot My built in soundcard is default again.

    I want to have usb-soundcard as default without disabling my HD built in soundcard. For example, when i am using specific apps i want both soundcards available for example mixxx.
    Can anybody guide me to the right direction?

    You don't have to have to use every config file theoretically possible and your current setup is probably in such a mess that you are blocking yourself with conflicting configuration. Post the contents of all ALSA related configfiles you might have
    /etc/asound.conf
    ~/.asoundrc (and other ones in your home directory)
    In general on a one user standard system you only need an /etc/asound.conf and a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf any other file is for user-specific configuration which you don't need on a one user system.
    EDIT: If that what you posted up there is your current asound.conf, you are resetting your default card away from the usb again. Remove all other definitions except the ones pertaining to your usb card for now to see if you get it working then (and they should have unique names so you should use e.g. pcm.softvolhda-intel if you want softvol for your intel etc otherwise you overwrite previous definitions)
    Personally I'd also suggest you switch to using pulseaudio, as it covers all your usecases with way less specific configuration necessary, you could remove all your ALSA config (except the modprobe one) and install pulseaudio-alsa and pavucontrol to control the correct devices. But that's just me, we can still get ALSA to work if you want to get ALSA to work.
    I do not have other alsa-related configuration files. /etc/asound.conf and .asoundrc do not exist. In other thread about resetting/restoring alsa, i was told to remove all three files, /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, /etc/asound.conf and .asoundrc . So i did. And then I created again /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with the contents i wrote above. So, no, these contents are not in /etc/asound.conf. but in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf .
    Oh, I prefer to work with alsa for now. As I told before there are educational reasons for that too

  • [SOLVED] No sound through usb soundcard in Google Chromium

    Hi there,
    Before switching to Arch I had used my external usb soundcard in Ubuntu and Kubuntu which worked almost flawlessly except for no sound through Google Chromium in Kubuntu. I thought this may have been isolated when switching KDE on Arch but I'm stilling having the same problem. All audio works through the external soundcard except for Chromium.
    Does anyone know how I can change sound preferences in Chromium or other way to solve this problem?
    Thanks,

    Not sure exactly what I did but I fiddled with the default soundcard configuration and now it works.

  • Firefox audio stops working or crashes if I unplug my USB soundcard

    Hi, I use windows 7 64-bit and Firefox 10.0.2, and here is my problem that I have with all versions of Firefox that I've used. I currently use my M-Audio Fast Track USB audio interface as a soundcard on my PC. The audio on it works just fine with FF, but every time I mistakenly unplug it (even if its for less than a second), the audio stops completely on my flash videos (until I restart my browser with the usb soundcard back in), or sometimes hangs (forcing me to close it the hard way) after a while if the connection has been interupted with the soundcard, while all of my other applications remain to work without restarting them.
    Is there anything that I can do that will fix this, or will there possibly be any fixes to this in the near future?

    I have the exact same problem and my setup is very similar to yours. I have an Hd2900XT and ASUS M2R32-MVP board aswell. It must be some kind of issue with the motherboard i think. Could someone please look into this?
    EDIT:

  • ITunes doesn't play through USB Soundcard

    Hi, I am using a USB soundcard because the headphone jack on my laptop is really scratchy. However, playback goes through my built-in soundcard and then to the speakers, rather than through my USB soundcard into my headphones.
    I've checked all system settings for the soundcard, and everything points at the USB soundcard even though iTunes is the only program that plays through the built-in soundcard.

    That's kind of you to say so, Kim. Glad you got things sorted out.

  • IMac G5 fan noise

    Hi MGW,
    Baby Boomer recommended that I check with you about our iMac G5 fan noise since you used to have the same model. For a reference as to what all has been suggested and done go to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9810894&#9810894
    I've done some internet searches and come across some other ideas on what may be the problem and if it is not too much trouble I would be very interested in your thoughts about the suggestions by DeathStalker13 --- please scroll down to #19 at this link:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=50158
    Here is another link that I've found information about iMac G5 fan noise. I'd also like your impression about the methods that these people have done to solve the issue:
    http://scienceman.com/legacypgs/00imacG5fanforum.html
    I've also contacted a local AASP store and from just our telephone conversation they think just cleaning the fans and inspecting the computer which would take 1-1/2 hours at $95/hour should take care of the problem.
    We'd really appreciate you opinion. Thanks!!!

    Thank you so much for answering so quickly. I apologize for not being able to do the same. We had unexpected house guests and everything else was set aside while they were here.
    This morning I have been researching trying to figure out how to disable Flash but so far I've been unsuccessful. We have a Power PC Mac OS X 10.4.11, Safari version 3.2.1.
    Under the Safari "Help" it says, "Safari works with the plug-ins that are installed with Mac OS X. To see a list of installed plug-ins, open Safari and choose Help > Installed Plug-ins."
    I checked and the Installed Plug-Ins list only has one "FLASH" listed - Shockwave Flash. I didn't know how to disable it or if I should.
    You suggested changing to Firefox or Camino. We already swap between Safari & Firefox (version 3.0.12) for other reasons. Unfortunately, the fan noise is the same whether we use Firefox or Safari.
    It was interesting that under Firefox "Help" they recommended disabling Adobe Flash plugin: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Usingthe+Flash+Plugin+withFirefox?style_mode=inproduct
    They said something about, "vulnerable to an extremely malicious exploit" and that until Adobe has an update, you can disable Flash. I followed the instructions but the only plug-ins I found were the following:
    Default Plug-In
    Netscape Navigator Default Plug-In
    Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.6.4
    Runs Java applets using the latest installed version of Java. For more information: Java Embedding Plugin. Run version test: Java information.
    Java Plug-in
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in
    Java Plug-In (CFM)
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in (CFM)
    QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.2
    The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in web pages. For more information, visit the QuickTime web site.
    Shockwave Flash
    Shockwave Flash 9.0 r159
    Shockwave for Director
    Macromedia Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 10.1.1
    I haven't changed anything yet, as I'm not sure what I should disable. We have considered putting up with the fan noise since it isn't as bad since we cleaned the fans but if there is an easy fix we'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

  • No sound through usb soundcard

    Hi there,
    I am using KDE desktop and an external USB soundcard. Audio works through every program using the external USB card except for Chromium. There is one exception audio does work through headphones on chromium so I guess that cancels out flash.
    I have read brebs threads regarding similar scenarios but from what I can find there are none specific to this problem.
    I had the same problem when using Kubuntu Karmic on my laptop using the same USB soundcard and never solved it.
    Is there anyway I can configure my system to direct audio from Chromium to my USB soundcard?

    I'm not sure whether this helps but cat /proc/asound/cards list the following:-

  • Lirc Remote + USB Soundcard

    Hello,
    I want use my old medion remote control to control my mpd server. The audio output is a philips stereo with "usb-pc-link", so it's a stereo with build in usb soundcard.
    I got it all worked but just until I shutdown my stereo. After I shutdown my stereo the remote control doesn't work anymore. Then I have to restart the system, or restart the lirc deamoen two times (yes two times) until it works again.
    I don't really know how to approach this problem.
    A hint is, that I can control the media player on Windows with the remote of the stereo, so the phillips "usb-pc-link" is not just a soundcard, it's also an input device. I think this cause the trouble.
    The remote control is connected with Lirc.

  • Which iMac usb port is high power?

    Which iMac USB port is high power?

    I'm not sure this is the case, at least on the newer iMacs. Some ports will adequately power some devices (most notable the USB Suerdrive) while others won't. Or, this has been the case recently, anyway; USB with Apple devices seems hopelessly arcane anyway, which makes no sense at all!)

  • Why is my iMac making this noise?

    Everytime that I do something, my iMac makes this noise. Its anoyying can I fix it? I have an imac with an intel core 2 duo 3.06 ghz processor with 2gb of ram a 500 gb hard drive and an nvidia geforce 8800 gs 512 mb graphics card and i have snow leopard 10.6.3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r80l0NQjz8

    Hi Joann123
    That sure sounds like the Hard Drive accessing data, some are noisier than others.
    For example: the original 160GB Seagate Barracuda that came in my Early 2006 Core Duo sounded about the same. After using it in the iMac for 3 years I took it out and put it into an External drive, another year later it still sounds the same but works just fine as an extra backup drive for my music and photos.
    I don't think that it is going to fail tomorrow, but if it really bothers you that much backup to be safe and by all means contact Apple as explained by those that have replied in your other thread.

  • Sound Problems with USB Soundcard

    Hi,
    i have some problems with my Terratek USB Soundcard. I use it for Teamspeak 3 and Skype. After a while the sound is going verry crappy and robotic. After that, i have to close all apps wich are using this soundcard and then everythings ok for the next aprox 20 minutes.
    Two friends have the same problem with a Hama USB Soundcard. I think this is a Snow Leo problem.
    Would be nice to have a solution...
    I tested on my MacMini and my Macbook Pro.
    Greetings

    And yes, the Midi Util shows the card.

  • Imac makes loud noises almost gurgling  sound?

    imac makes loud noises almost gurgling  sound?

    Does the gurgling stop when you mute the sound? In other words, is it coming from the speakers? If so, see below.

  • USB Soundcards and the unibodies

    hi,
    i have a problem with my dj usb soundcard "audio 8 dj".
    when i plug in the card, the sound crackles and is distorted.
    restarting the macbook resolves the problem, but that is not situation for livegigs or something.
    i read into other forums that it is no special problem of that soundcard or sounddriver. other people had the same problem with other usbsoundcards on the macbook alu. the soundcard works fine on every other mbp or mb.
    some hardware or driverconfiguration of the new macbooks (alu) must be the problem.
    any ideas or updates?

    I've never had a Nokia that would connect successfully via cable to a Mac but things have gotten better recently...
    Card Readers:
    As petrib points out, most memory cards nowadays are recognised by Macs as 'Mass Storage Devices'. This means that no proprietary drivers are needed. Pop the card out of your phone & stick it in one of those card readers. Plug the reader into the mac & it'll show up on your desktop as a drive. This is by far the easiest way to load music onto your phone.
    You can pick up tiny, very cheap card readers all over ebay. My reader does say it accepts miniSD but I've found it still needs the card adapter to make the miniSD into a normal size SD to work.
    Bluetooth:
    Obviously the other godsend for mac-Nokia users has been bluetooth. Great for syncing but slow for music etc. Also all files received are saved to your phone first & then to your card meaning you cant fill your new 2gb miniSD with one drag & drop from your music library
    Networking:
    Apparently the E61 supports connection to your home wireless net by VPN. Have yet to try this out but sounds neat.

  • IMac 27" Static Noise through external monitors

    Hey, I recently bought a 27" iMac and I'm running a pair of Yamaha HS50Ms out for monitoring audio recording. When I'm not playing sound the speakers output static from the computer (presumably hard drive noise or something?). It's especially noticeable when I scroll the magic mouse.
    Does anyone know how to solve this?
    thanks

    -= Guaranteed Solution =-
    Hi, I have a Quick and nasty solution. It will work, it's a good test also if this is not the case, however, I bet it is.
    The problem is technically a ground loop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundloop%28electricity%29).
    The 'Quick and Dirty' solution is to buy a normal cheap double adapter, cut off the earth (I just used pliers) and plug the power of your iMac into this and then your socket, effectively, removing the ground plug to the Mac.
    I have messed around ALOT. This is the cheapest complete fix. Be careful when you plug USB's into the computer. I now use a hub for USB, as without the earth you will get some sparks from the ungrounded mac aluminum frame, If this happens don't worry but yeah its not ideal.
    If this test works I would then recommend getting a decent RCA Ground noise filter, I don't know if it will cut frequency's of the audio or not, I guess the other option is to try a fully reconditioning UPC unit I haven't tested this yet, I just assume it would work. (cost $200-$600+)
    You can also try plugging the Monitors and iMac into the same power board or even better same split power cable. this might have some effect until you really increase power output as the earths are as close to each other. This works for me until I turn my Mackie MR8's up to about 75%. if they are plugged into different power supply I can hear the noise at around 25%-30%.
    The iMac actually has an impressive sound card, I have a feeling either it or something on the USB is leaking earth onto the aluminum frame. maybe even the sound card itself isn't earthed properly and runs through the USB earth. It annoys me mac won't provide any kind of solution or admit any of this. ****, I would be happy if they at least sold a ground loop filter on there shop. I know I'm not the only person with Monitor setup and iMac 27" !!!!
