IMac USB Speed

Can someone tell me what version of USB is on an iMac 27" Mid 2011? The system report doesn't use terms I'm familiar with, e.g., USB 2.0 or USB 3.0.
Thank you

USB 2.0 - 480 Mb/s.

First off, I am disappointed that the new iPod I have been waiting for (video and photo and music) no longer supports FIREWIRE. I use a lot of firewire disks, audio interface, and have a nice hub... but if I decide to obtain a new iPod I now have to examine my USB speed.
When you use the profiler tool and look at the USB tree on my 1.25GHz G4 iMac, you see three separate USB devices - two are 12 MBs and one iw 480 MBs - The keyboard and printer are on the slower ports, and I have a SanDisk reader apparently on the faster port.
Is that the case that not all of the USB connections are high-speed USB? Should I be expecting that at least one USB connection on this computer will be a high speed USB?
    Thanks

All three of the USB ports on your computer are USB 2.0; the keyboard as well as any USB devices plugged in to the keyboard will operate at USB 1.1 speed. The printer may also operate at USB 1.1 speeds.

  • Which iMac usb port is high power?

Which iMac USB port is high power?

I'm not sure this is the case, at least on the newer iMacs. Some ports will adequately power some devices (most notable the USB Suerdrive) while others won't. Or, this has been the case recently, anyway; USB with Apple devices seems hopelessly arcane anyway, which makes no sense at all!)

  • USB speeds on late 2012 model Macbook Pro

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro (without retina display) to replace the 15" MBP I bought in 2006.  The USB speeds are extremely slow.  For example,  I transferred a 650 MB file from the new MBP to a thumb drive.  It took more than 45 minutes.  When I then transferred to my 2006 MBP it took less than 4 minutes.  Both are running Lion.  What gives?  Is there a configuration issue or is there a problem with my USB ports in my machine?

  • Wrong USB Speed

    Hi there,
I have E-MU 0202 and when I click on the [Control Panel] icon on the bottom right the "configuration center" appears. I can select the device, sample rate but that's not the point. It is written there "USB Speed : 1.1" while it should be 2.0, right? What should I do to change it?
Now I have Windows 7 but I don't remember how it was working on Vista or XP. Simply I didn't noticed that before, I think.
    Thanks for some answer!

Since you have switched from XP/Vista to W7, could it be possible that you need to install some "drivers" to get USB 2.0 mode available (drivers are bundled with motherboard or you can check from the support site for your motherboard)?
Also, is there an option for USB 2.0 support in system BIOS.

  • USB speed help!

I have a macbook pro from late 2009. It has a 1.1 usb speed but I need a 2.0. Is there anyway to install an upgrade or get a plug-in host to get the 2.0 speed from my usb drive?

A Macbook Pro from 2009 should have full USB 2 support. USB 2 has been around since the early 2000s. I would think Apple is not that far behind the curve. And cetainly not with Lion 10.7.3 installed.
Something else is wrong. Like you have a USB 1.1 hub connected and your external is going through that.
The port you are using is bad.
The cable you are using is bad or very inferior and can not do USB 2.

I also move this topic to the right area.
Yes, everything is installed and updated with latest drivers even from nVidia WEB for ULi chipset. the devices that we are talking about are USB removable storage like 8GB USB Flash Drive from Kingmax, 2GB Flash Drive from Xerox, 1 GB USB Flash drive from Kingston, USB case for 2,5" HDD from Spire ... • Re-2013 27'' iMac USB 3.0 troubles-.

      Hi guys
      the 19th of October i got my brand new 27'' iMac  i5 3,2GHZ, 24GB Ram, G-Force GT 755M, 1TB..
got it home, powered it, updated it's software but NO Mavericks yet - being a work machine, i always wait a while to update OS until i'm sure... so  it's running 10.8.5.
then i transfered all my data from a Time Machine back-up, all went well...
after reading Apple's own recommendations, i started by plugging one of my NewerTech Guardian Maximus Raid1 enclosures via supplied USB 3.0 cable - this, if i understood correctly, ''sets'' the iMac's USB ports to USB 3.0...
then i connected a second G-Max also via USB 3.0, both enclosures mounted fast enough ! wanting to make sure all was OK, i launched iTunes ( my music is stored in 1 of these boxes..) & then......my 1st Beach Ball & system freeze happened
tried all sorts, always the same system or app freezes, beach balls & subsequent Force Quits - which by the way DON'T seem to always work specially if they are of the ''Finder not responding'' + relaunch Finder variety
tried unplugging everything, start from scratch - same thing happened. again i unplugged everything only this time i plugged in my Logitech powered USB 2 hubs first THEN the G-Max's to the hub + everything else & it worked fine
not wanting to deal w/ USB 2 speeds, i bought an Apple Tbolt/FW800 adapter & it all works now - problem is, one of the reasons i sold my late 2009 27'' iMac & bought this machine was to benefit from it's USB 3.0 capabilities.....
trusting these USB 3.0 tantrums AREN'T caused by my new iMac, i contacted OWC to check if there was a new firmware for my G-Max's, they sent me a link to the latest, a friend equipped w/ the required Windows laptop to install said firmware update ( in this day & age !?.. ) came over, ran the update but a dialog box opened stating both my G-Max's have the exact same firmware version as the update itself....
having Googled these USB 3.0/Mac issues, among other things i came across some stating Bluetooth MIGHT or HAS something to do w/ it so....got a corded Logitech mouse i keep for emergencies, switched off Bluetooth &....same thing ! :-b
following an Apple Support Comunities user's advice here, i tried also resetting the Pram, the SMC, etc....but nothing changed
meanwhile having ordered a 3rd G-Max enclosure, i connected it & miracle of miracles - it works without a single occurrence !? not only that but in the system report itn displays differently :
1 of the old G-Max connected
    both of the old G-Max
the new G-Max & it's Blackmagic Disk Speed Test results
by the way, do these figures seem about right ? i also copied a folder of 49GB of video files to it & it took 11 minutes to do so...
the enclosure is loaded w/ a pair og Western Digital Green Caviars ( i didn't know they could cause problems in Raid arrays when i bought them but have NEVER caused any really..)
please note that on the System Report screenshots above, only the new G-Max enclosure is correctly identified, could this have anything to do with it ?
as i said elsewhere, i'm not terribly worried about these ''USB 3.0 tantrums'', my feel being it must be nothing more than a few ''teething troubles'' between different USB 3.0 implementations which i hope will go away as new drivers/software updates come along, etc.....still, the fact is i would REALLY like to be able to use my iMac's USB 3.0 ports & benefit from them
      so in a nutshell :
1 - old G-Max's to iMac via USB 3.0 cable = system/Finder/app freezes & beach balls + can't run Balckmagic Disk Speed Test
    2 - G-Max's to iMac via Tbolt/FW800 adapter = all good
3 - G-Max's to iMac via powered USB 2 hub = all good
    4 - new G-Max to iMac via USB 3.0 = all good
any help, info, links, suggestions, etc....would be MOST WELCOME & appreciated
a great week-end to all & many thanks
      Nuno

after a series of emails to OWC Support, OWC confirmed the ''old'' G-Max enclosures ( January & May 2012..) have a different chipset than the new one so i can only conclude either the USB 3.0 standard changed in the meantime or they found out the old one were causing too many problems ?
what OWC suggested is that i return my old enclosures to them & for $40 each, they would update the firmware which if i lived in the States i would consider BUT :
1 - i live in Europe so posting them to & from OWC would be prohibetively expensive ( enough to buy the newer version or almost ?.. )
2 - since OWC sent me a link of their latest firmware available but that turned out to be the exact same fimware version the older enclosures have installed AND running/installing it DIDN'T solve the issues, it strikes me more as a bet rather than a sure thing !?
3 - who's to say this won't be necessary again say in another year ? hardly practical & rather expensive
in the meantime i've contacted Macupgrade.eu whom i bought them from ( an Euro vendor of all things OWC..) to see if this can be done through them, specially considering they offer a 3 year warranty for the G-Max enclosures..
if not, i might as well forget about it & forget about OWC products in the future if indeed the only way to solve bigger issues is to spend more money than the items are worth posting them across the planet
this of course leaves me a rather strange after taste considering that some of the reasons to buy these enclosures were OWC good rep to begin with + the fact they were advertised as being USB 3 - the fact they changed the chipset in them & that the new one does work properly w/ my 2013 iMac to me is proof there was something not quite right to begin with specially considering that Apple, although not infallible, usually gets these things right from the word go..
oh well, in the meantime i'll keep on ''wasting'' one Thunderbolt port to run them via FW800, something i can't help find comical

  • Connection of iPod to iMac - USB or Firewire

I recently got the 80 gb iPod. It came with a cable that connects to the usb port of the computer. My computer is an iMac G4 so I think it's got the older usb ports (not 2.0). I was wondering if I could obtain a wire that hooks into the iMac's firewire port. I am thinking this would allow for quicker iPod updates. Is there such a cable? Will it improve the speed of my iPod updates?

Yes, the Nano and the 5th Generation iPods can both charge via Firewire. Especially helpful for users who still have those older firewire A/C adapters lying around from previous model iPods

When I run a speed test w/ my G DRIVE 1TB external HD I'm only getting 60mb up and down. I see most people averaging 90-100.... I have a the brand new iMac w/ 3.1GHz i7 and 1TB fusion drive...  Any ideas???
    Thanks!
I think it is perfectly normal for newer 5400 RPM drives and even some older 7200RPM drives to have read-write speeds around 60-70MB/s, and USB 2.0 can reach 60MB/s--though rarely--so in addition to what others have said I'd also check to make sure that your drive is on a 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus and not a USB High-Speed bus (2.0).  According to what I've read iMacs can USB 3.0 devices mounted on a 2.0 hub and a simple unmount, disconnect, reconnect will solve it.  I know this has happened to me.
Select Apple->About this Mac->More Info...->System Report and highlight (click on) the USB entry at the end of the Hardware section.  If your drive shows up as anything other than USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus then it is not running at USB 3.0 speeds.

  • IMac USB no longer recognizing 3rd party phones (BlackBerry, Android, or Symbian).

Hey everyone, this is my first post to this community support group.
Last week, using my iMac, I attempted to install the Ubuntu OS onto my Nexus 7.
I followed some online guides on how to do so, and realized that I was not up to the task.  The process involved various things, although the one I suspect created my current problem was inputing Terminal commands (unfortunately, I can not recall the commands I entered).
Not only was I unable to install the Ubuntu OS on my Nexus 7, but now my iMac does not recognize any 3rd party phones (Android, BlackBerry and Symbinan) that are plugged into the USB ports.  Prior to this Ubuntu attempt, my iMac recognized all phones plugged into it's USB ports.
    A few things:
    1) The USB Device Tree in System Information lists several connected USB devices (iPhone, Printer, External Drives, Etc), but will not display 3rd party phones.
    2) The Disk Utility does recognize any phones as hard drives, when they are plugged in via usb.
    3) I've tried using the phones' interfaces to switch them from USB mass storage, to camera, to charge settings when plugged into the iMac with no effect.
    4) I've tried plugging the 3rd party phones in different USB ports with no results either.
Thank you for any help and guidance you guys might offer!
    Jeff

Try doing both a iMac SMC and PRAM reset, it may take several attemps for it to work.

  • I am extremely disappointed with my imac's speed. should i upgrade the RAM?

I bought this lovely machine so that when i come back home, i can push aside my 12" toshiba work laptop and enjoy working on my music and photos and internet browsing on the imac.
the music (ipod +itunes) and browsing works great, but as soon as i get onto iphoto (v5.0.4), it just takes years to get anything done and sometimes it just closes down on me. i have times that colourful round ball rotaing at times for over 40 minutes! i have just 8,000 photos and i just cannot use iphoto at all. also, i'm not all that savvy (or inclined) to try and figure out other softwares - i just assumed that apple's own software and hardware would combine really well in an application that it is really well known for (digital imaging).
so do you reckon it's a hardware issue (RAM or something like that) or that iphoto isn't upto the task? i would use another software for organising the photos if necessary, but i do quite like the way in which iphoto does the organising - when it works.
hope someone out there has some ideas for me!
    cheers

Thank you all for the replies! I'm going to work through what each of you have suggested and see how much it helps. The 40 minutes of processing time is not an exaggeration. In fact, it sometimes takes longer than that - but I think it's hanging - so i've forcibly shut down the application.
Al - cheers for your immediate tips - they have certainly helped. I disallowed other shared libraries, dropped the shadow and reduced the photo size to approximately a small thumbnail and the speed has most certainly improved! it still takes a few minutes every now and then, but it's decidedly better.
Dan - I'll try Onyx (first i'll figure out what it is!) to clean things up, i imagine.
Jerry, thanks for the tip on iphoto buddy. i'll certainly try it when i have the time. it'll also help me keep the photos i don't want everyone to see aside, i imagine!
And Rod - these are all jpegs from my NikonD70, i haven't started shooting RAW as yet, as i have to figure out how to process those first! I'll probably upgrade the RAM to 2gigs and to ilife'06 in the next week or two. I'll go through the routine that you suggested for checking for directory corruption as well.
Thanks a lot to all of you! i'm sure i'll be back on track very soon!
    cheers,
    sidlal

  • Imac usb ports stopped working?

i was using a new 10 usb hub, imac said something about draining power and then froze now only one of the three usb ports worked.
i have reset PRAM and SMC
completely unplugged power and still the two ports do not work..any help

Hi, is his what you tried...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Can't print from iMac USB; works from AEBS

I have an Epson CX6600 printer. Normally it's connected to my AEBS so that I can access it from all my computers (2 Mac, 1 Windows) and the printer works fine. However, when it's connected to the AEBS I can't scan directly to the computer, use the Epson Smart Panel, etc - so to do that I hook the printer up directly to the iMac's USB port. Works fine for scanning, but I can't print from the USB port on the iMac. Is there something I need to do to enable printing from a built in USB port on the iMac? I'm stumped! I'm using Panther.

Got lucky and figured it out myself! I had to install the printer as a USB printer; it had been only installed via the AEBS as a Rendezvous printer.
