IMac user accounts one account hangs, how do I repair it?
iMac user accounts one account hangs, how do I repair it?
When I login to the account it logs in, then the first thing click hangs that account and I have to reboot.
Any suggestions???
Since this is account specific looking for suspects in /Library/StartupItems, etc. is not the place to look first. It must be specific to that account. So the immediate suspects could be that account's login items or ~/Library/LaunchAgents.
So, as suggested, boot in safe mode but then try to log into the problem account. If it works then look at your login items and ~/Library/LaunchAgents (if any) and temporarily remove all tof them. Then reboot normally and try to log into the account again.
Of course sometimes just booting in safe mode may clear the problem up if it's a file system or cache problem. You never know until you try.

How do I maintain a single iTunes library for two separate iMac user accounts?
How do I maintain a single iTunes library for two separate iMac user accounts?...without having to manually do something every download?
Pardon me, I am brand new at using an iMac. I understand the concept but I don't know exactly how to "move" the library. I found a shared folder under users on the hard drive. If I move it, won't I have to redirect each iTunes user to the new shared location?
If I point iTunes to anything other than the music folder under that user name, it shows as a "shared library". Preferences still shows it as that users library, regardless of where the advanced gear button says it is pointing to.
Am I asking for too much to have each user control the exact same music files, apps and playlists? I just want the two different itunes sessions to mirror each other without any frequent updating or copying.
We use the same id for itunes music and apps so we could just sync all devices under one iMac user id and not use it under hers. -
i use migrate assistant to move files from my old pc to the new Mac , but it creates the user account. How can i delete the unwanted user account.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472 -

I have an iMac with 2 internal drives and a multiple user account set-up. Hw do I create a path to store data files on the second drive within an application?
This is the Mac mini forum not the iMac forum however...
Applications written for average users like Photoshop, Word, i.e. GUI based applications provide a 'Save' dialog box which while allow selecting second drives or any drive. The dialob box initially shown might be in the simple mode but you just need to click on the triangle to show the full set of options. You should then see the different drive names amongst other options.
If your referring to an application your writing yourself then you need to build a pathname. This can be in one of two styles depending on the programming system your using. This could be a POSIX style path or a Mac style path.
POSIX = /Volumes/volname/foldername
Mac style = Volname:foldername: -
Set up new iMac user accounts & storage locations
I just made the switch from Windows PC to a new iMac since it is still in the box I thought I would take some time to think about how I want to set it up before opening it and starting to dump all my files onto the new machine. I'd like to have an efficient setup and get it right from the start!
My current (PC) set up is this:
I have one 500Gb internal drive. Using Windows 7 I have four user accounts: me, my wife, and one each for the kids with parental controls. I would like to duplicate this setup, and I understand OS X Lion can do this.
Now the messy part: under my account I have a bunch of docs (word, excel files, PDF's, etc, let's call this stuff "data"), a couple thousand songs, a bunch of pics and some movies. Email etc too. When I log into my account I have a my documents folder with my data files. I have an iTunes folder and in it a bunch of music. Some is from ripped cd's, some from iTunes store, some from amazon mp3 store. When I open iTunes I have a library with all of the music avail on my machine. Oh, I also have an iPad 2 and when I plug it in, it syncs with my library and apps and movies etc. I open Thunderbird and I get my email. So far so good.
When my wife logs in she has her "my documents" folder with her data. She opens thunderbird and gets her email, not mine. More mess though: she doesn't like half the music I like, and she doesn't want to see it. When she opens iTunes she gets a library with fewer songs available, and I'm moderately sure that her songs are *copies* of what's in my music folder. Well some are anyway, some point to the music in my folder (I was not very consistent in how I added music to her library). She has an iPad 1 that syncs to her library, with only a fraction of the apps that I have. She has her own pictures too (different from mine - basically she would copy pics from the camera to her "space" but I wouldn't know it, and wouldn't see them).
The kids accounts are relatively "clean" - just accounts with parental controls for web browsing (online kids games) etc. EXCEPT my daughter has an iPod shuffle (2Gb) and a small library of songs. I *think* this library points to my files but hey might be copies.
I *dont* want to end up with a ton of duplicate files on my new machine like I *know* I have on my windows machine. It just eats up too much space.
What I want to do is have one place for all of the pictures to go, and all of the music files to go, and every time there are new pics or music, it all goes there. But I want my wife to have a "smaller" music library than me (she just plain doesn't want the "clutter" of seeing my music and having to sort through it to check it/uncheck it to put it on her iPad - she's a clutter-free freak even with digital files). For photos I want to use one iPhoto library so that if she goes in there and tags some phots with some keyword or event or adds new pics, then I see those things when I open my iPhoto (I honestly don't even know how to use iPhoto to manage my pics, my iMac is till in the box). I want her to have her data under her login and my data under mine, etc. In short, there things I want shared between the two of us, and things I don't, without duplicate files eating up the space on my 500Gb internal hard drive.
Additionally I am considering a 500Gb external drive, and rather than using it for straight up storage, using it as a time machine backup of the whole system. I am looking at a FireWire800 drive for better performance.
I'd like to get this right the first time, but don't know enough about how os x works/sets up user accounts, and/or the best, most efficient way to set up the new iMac from the get go. I don't know if I should set up all four accounts first, then add my data/music/pics manually, or use the "migration assistant" (I have read a bit about using it but honestly don't know how it works, or if it will do what I want).
Perhaps I could just print out this email and pay for apple one-to-one service, but I thought I'd check here first! Sorry for such a long post - but I am hoping I'm not the only one who has wanted to make the switch and start off on the right path! And it's a lot easier to learn from other peoples experience than to figure it all out on my own!
PS: don't know if it matters much, but I also hav an iPhone that I sync with my iTunes, and I'm concerned about losing the configuration/apps/music/movies on both my iPad and my iPhone when I make the switch. Thoughts? Should I be concerned? How do I do it correctly? You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. Give them a call and they can help you set it up, however to be honest you are way over thinking this, those old PC habits die hard! My recommendation is, take it out of the box, read the manual carefully and turn the thing on following the on-screen instructions and start enjoying your new iMac.

Application crashes, but not in new user account. How to fix?
Like many others on the forum, I have experienced frequent crashes in SL in Mail, Safari, Powerpoint, and other applications, particularly when adding an attachment to an email message or inserting an image file in a presentation slide. Did all the usual maintenance things such as verifying and repairing permissions, reinstalling SL, trashing virus protection apps, etc. Crashes persisted. However, I created a new user account and when working in that account the crashes do not occur.
What does this suggest about the nature of the problem and how do I resolve it, preferably without migrating all my files over to the new user account.
Many thanks.Open Directory Utility. You will find it in Applications/Utilities.
Click the lock to make changes and enter your admin password.
Go to the menu bar: Edit > Enable root user.
Follow the instuctions to create the System Administrator (Root) user.
Do not use the same password that a regular user already has. Do not use a trivial password.
Log out the current user.
In the log in window, enter root as the user name.
Enter the password that you just created.
You now have access to all User accounts, folders and files. Move the files you need from the old account to the working one. For example move the contents of your old Documents folder to the new Documents folder. This is easiest if you open two Finder windows and place them side by side. repeat this for the other folders in your old user space with one exception. *Do not* copy the contents of the Library folder.
There are a couple of things in the Library folder that you probably do want. To retrieve your email, copy the contents of the Mail folder. If you have installed fonts in your user space copy those too.
Let your new Library manage itself from then on. Your apps will place preference files etc in the appropriate folders as they are launched.
You should also give the working account admin priviliges. (System Preferences > Accounts)
Be very careful whilst logged in as root. The main Library and System folders are no longer protected and nothing requires a further password entry. Do what you need to do and get out of there.
When you are finished log back in to the working account and open Directory Utility once more.
Go to Edit > Disable root user.
Keep the old user account on the drive for a while until you are sure everything is working correctly and nothing is missing. -
User accounts corrupted - how to fix
So my Mac locked up the other day when the babysitter decided to put it to sleep. The fan was on full and it was unresponsive. I force-powered it off and then on again. When it came back, almost everything was fine except for my wife's account. It had switched to sort of my son's account. What I mean is that my son is running the restricted finder, and when my wife logged in, it was using the restricted finder and the "My Applications" folders, etc. were pointing to my son's directories. Everything else was normal, so when you select full finder, it's running from my wife's account (has her desktop files, etc.), but the dock was still the messed up one. Going into Accounts as me, it shows her as an admin and doesn't show that she is running the restricted finder.
I'm quite comfortable with Unix sys admin activities, but OS-X doesn't run things the same way as normal Unix systems. Can anybody help me figure out what's gotten messed up and how to fix?
Thanks.
AndrewWith a full or otherwise marginalized hard disk drive with possible damages
to files or directory (or corruption, lost data, or files lost due to meddling) the
advice to make a full backup of the computer's contents to an external HDD
in a suitable enclosure for use with your computer, is the best first step to
not loose any more data. Clone utilities help do this while retaining what is
left of the correct and original file structure which would be otherwise lost.
For other ideas about user accounts and their place in OS X systems, you
can take a look at how they work and how the topic is addressed in these
selected web page links. User accounts are the basis of keeping a system
secure and help keep the contents organized and protected. If someone
who has no business in an Admin account had this access, they could be
responsible for a considerable degree of damage. And the blame does not
necessarily fall on the last person to unknowingly mess it up. The owner
has to be accountable for learning how to best protect their investment and
the contents of the computer, and other users, from loss or harm.

To take charge of security and account management when more than one
person uses a computer (or even just one admin-owner account user) is a
preventative action. The later OS X systems are even more elaborately made
and there are some very in-depth articles and documents for management of
system accounts, user access, security and so on, for Leopard. These are
often pro-level documents and some of them are 3MB downloads.
In the meantime, damage control requires a different path be taken to recover
from the problems at hand; while looking into how to prevent them.

IMac user accounts - do you have to log off to switch accounts
Is it necessary to log off from one user account to switch to another on an iMac. I would like to be able to suspend activity in one account and switch to another without having to shut down everything currently in progress on the first (i.e. switch user). Is this possible ?
You have to enable Fast User Switching:
System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Options -> "Show fast user switching menu as ..."
After that you have an Icon in the menu bar and switch between the users without logout the first one. -

On the iMac user account login screen, what does the checkmark mean?
On my iMac, I have 3 user accounts. Sometimes I have noticed that next to 1 of the 3 account names that I will sometimes see a small white check mark in a red circle. What does this mean?
I just received the same login for the first time in a while. I had left my MacBook Pro asleep for several days and then turned it back on and the wakeup/login screen presented a similar red circle with a white check mark inside. Did you find an answer? I created a new post today to see if anyone has had anything similar, not sure if it's firevault or not confirming id...

Crash on startup - limited to user account, but how?
Hello,
I've set up a new user account on my MacBook (OS 10.4.11) by importing the user folder from another computer using Migration Assistant. This computer has iPhoto 6 installed and it works fine in the other user accounts. However, in this new user account it "quits unexpectedly" about two seconds after it finishes its startup routine. I'll paste a crash report below.
Since the problem is limited to this user account, I immediately deleted the iPhoto preference file, but that didn't help; then I temporarily removed the entire Preferences folder; then the entire Library folder; and just for the heck of it, the entire Documents folder. I also removed the Pictures folder and let iPhoto create a new library, but it still crashes in the same way. I've also repaired disk permissions and reinstalled iPhoto from the system CD that came with the computer.
After all of this, I created another new user account, without importing any data, and iPhoto works fine there. So the problem still seems to be limited to this account, even though I've systematically eliminated everything I could think of that would cause the problem. Do you have any ideas?
Thanks,
-Arlo

hi im a pretty new mac user been using for maybe 3 months now and so far not so good
I think i have now come to terms that my main user accout is so corrupted its becoming really irritating trying to use
Things like
Im creating a new website and when i view it in safari (on main user account) its like the CSS sheet is all wrong, yet on every other computer and on my other account its totally fine
Things I've downloaded in safari keep randomly deleting themselves from the list (although it deletes back to a certain date, this could be the date it became corrupt)
Textedit no longer opens (but opens fine on other account)
Preview no longer opens (but opens fine on other account)
I called Apple a while back and someone told me to re-install Lion which i did, but it never worked i then awaited a phone call back which i never got that was about 4 weeks ago i tried to let it go but more and more faults keep appearing .
Am i out of luck and will have to stop using that account or is their anyway to "restore" it without loosing all my files. I suppose if the worst came to the worst i could just kee it for my files and use a new user account, or would that eventually become corrupt too ?

Two user accounts sharing aperture library constantly repairing permissions
My girlfriend and I each have a user account on our iMac. We have our Photo Library in a shared folder so we can both access it when using Aperture. However, every time I want to use Aperture, I have to first repair permissions. After doing this, everything runs fine.
Then, when my girlfriend tries to access Aperture, SHE has got to repair permissions first or Aperture gets hung up.
Basically, it appears that when I repair permissions in my user account, it messes up the permissions in her user account and vice versa. Has anyone ever experienced this behavior before and have they found a solution?
Thanks,
RickIt is not sufficient to have the library in a shared folder. That will not help with the permissions inside the Aperture library package.
The safest way to use an Aperture library from two differnet accounts is to move it to a disk or disk partition that has the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag enabled. Then you can take turns using the Aperture library from your accounts.
The procedure is explained in this document for an iPhoto library, but it work also for an Aperture library.
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
Just remember, that any disk you are using for an Aperture library will have to be formatted for Mac:
MacOS Extented (Journaled).
My media drive with the Aperture library looks like this in "File > Get Info":
