IMac user has internet; but Mail, Safari in Death Spin
I am helping a friend who has had a new iMac (Snow Leopard) for three months. She lives on an island with no friendly local Genius Bar. Three days ago Mail and Safari went into a death spin. All Mail accounts are spinning fruitlessly. Safari will not load pages, saying it is not connected to the internet. Skype, however, functions normally and I have been using Skype to try to sort out the problem. This has me stumped. I've tried all the usual things, the computer has been rebooted umpteen times, we've disabled and enabled Mail accounts one by one. We've even turned off the firewall, just in case. I cannot understand how the problem, which came on suddenly, concerns Mail and Safari while Skype has no trouble. Had it not been for Skype, I would have blamed the internet connection. Any helpful noises would be appreciated. (All software, including OS X, is up to date).
What very likely happened is that either your friend's ISP's DNS server(s) went down, or DNS service via their router went down.
DNS is what is responsible for converting names such as "apple.com" to numeric IP addresses like "17.112.152.57."
Skype doesn't use DNS, as it has numeric IP addresses hard coded into the application.
So if DNS isn't working properly, attempting to visit any site by name won't work, but Skype will.

hi, i can connect to the internet but mail will not download and i cannot open a webpage?? any ideas
Try #2 and #3 in link below. If neither work, you most likely have a hardware issue.

Is it possible to connect an iMac to the internet but not to the network?
Hello,
I volunteered to purchase an iMac for our company. This huge company maintains a huge windows-only network environment and IT does not support any macs (nor do they want to have them on the network).
Hence, since we really need this machine to be a mac and not a PC I had to promise to set it up as a stand-alone machine and to get anti-virus protection (as users will be coming in with their jump drives etc). At least for the latter reason (regular updates of virus definitions must be possible) we'd like to have it connected to the internet.
How would I escape the dilemma that as soon as I'd hook it up via ethernet, it would of course get internet but at the same time would see all other machines on the network? (it will sure do so as I had tried it out with some other machine running on the same OS)
Is there a way to configure Snow Leopard to allow for internet but not network access?
Does it make sense at all (for security reasons that is)?
thank you very much,
HDIs there a way to configure Snow Leopard to allow for internet but not network access?
Well, 'internet' is 'network access' so at one level your question makes no sense.
If, on the other hand, what you want to do is segregate your Mac from the other machines then that's a different issue. There are numerous ways of doing that, but most would involve some level of interaction with the network administrators. Given their ana^H^H^H attitude towards Macs that may be an issue.
The best way would be to setup a separate VLAN for the Mac. This will create a separate logical network within the company network with only this Mac and the network router in it. No PC would see the Mac, and the Mac wouldn't be scarred by seeing all those PCs. This cannot be done without buy-in from the network admins, though.
A step down from that would be to use one PC in the network as a gateway to the rest of the network. The Mac would talk to this PC, and the PC would pass the data out to the rest of the network. This would require admin rights on the PC, though, which you may or may not have (I've seen a lot of corporate networks… :: shudder ::)
The last option would be to setup an entirely separate internet connection for the Mac but there are logistical issues there, too.
My advice: Buy a dozen Krispy Kremes for the network guys and sweet talk them into building you a VLAN. -
IMac Connects to Internet, but not File Server
Got one iMac (Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.5.8) that has a network issue. It can always connect to the internet, but sometimes it stops seeing a file server on the network (Tiger server). The server connection will drop out on this computer, but not on any of the other computers on the network. Things I've tried that don't work:
- restarting computer
- re-seating ethernet cable
- trying new ethernet cable
- zapping PRAM on computer
The connection to the server just comes and goes randomly, but only on this computer. Suggestions? Thanks!Same here with an iMac 27" connecting to a windows server.

Imac connects to internet but wont load then drops connection
I bought my first mac a couple of months ago with an imac 21.5 i5. I love the os and im glad i made the swithc BUT, it was slightly slower than my very cheap laptop on the internet and slower than all other computers in my house and iphone at oading web pages, it often struggled to load a page, said unable to load ect but then would work fine for the past 2 days it has connected to the internet but will NOT load a page, or it starts to then stops, then wont reload, it drops wifi then picks it back up. all other computers such as the one im typing from work fine.
I am very dissapointed with the mac now and would seriously think twice about buying another, the store i bought i from was no help, i cant believe apple dont have support for products inder warranty. even working it is slower than my laptop that cost 20% of the price. I own a company tha relies heavily on the internet and this being my business computer has been a massive blow for me. I have changed nothing on the computer since getting it, no system preference changes or changed router ect and i have no clue what this could be. I could inderstand if it wasnt picking up with internet connection but it is, It is 5 feet from the router.
If i cant sort this it will be back to pc for me, i cant afford to have this happen to me again and ruin a couple of days of work. all in all I have lost a lot of faith in this brand.Hi, this has worked for a few...
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.

WRT350N With DSL has internet but doesn't share it.
Hi guys.. a month ago I've bought the WRT350N Router, since I need a gigabit router, and I’m planning to buy a new notebook with Wireless N technology.
So at the beginning I’ve used to have a cable modem ISP, so I used to use the router on DHCP mode. But then I’ve change my ISP, put a ADSL so I had to start using PPOE.
But the problem is this.. I’ve reset the router, the I’ve setup it with my user & pass. The router gets everything from my ISP, I’ve checked on status page.
My PC gets the IP address from router but has no internet. BTW my PC doesn’t have firewall and if I connect the DSL modem directly to the PC it works fine.
Of course I’ve check the ping and trace from the router setup and it’s working great
The DSL modem that I’m using it’s Cisco 677
Anyway I really appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance…
Ariel. What IP address or website did you ping? Is your computer getting a valid DNS? Have you checked the proxy settings on your browser? Have you tried another browser like firefox? There are internet security firewalls like norton who doesn't work behind the router unless its properly configured, you may also check that.

Did you used to be able to view things on that site? If so, when did your problems start? Have you contacted them for help?
http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Using-Sky-Go/bd-p/skygo_using
This seems to be what's causing it: com.microsoft.net.coreclr
If that is the one and only site you're having problems with, I would contact them.
But in the meanwhile, make sure you've emptied your Safari cache . . . that might make a difference. -
IMac G5 has power but no display
I bought an iMac G5 iSight 17" from my neighbor thinking I could get it work, then afterward learn some more about Apple computers. It powers up fine but the screen is dark. I bought another lcd online for $100+, took the front panel off, and installed it but same issue is happening. One thing I did notice during re-assembly... the front plastic cover that slides off away from the lcd has 2 connectors on top: a thick one for the camera, and another 2-wire one that leads into a small round silver cylinder inside the top of the plastic cover (maybe a ground?). Anyway one of the two wires that go into the cylinder is broken. My question is what does this wire control? And could this be the reason neither of my displays works? Thanks for any help out there. I'm NEW to iMacs.
Hello,
At this point I think your best bet is to take it in for servicing at the local service center.
As for your data, I think odds are that it is still in-tact. The type of failure you describe sounds more like a failed logic-board or possibly the power supply (improper voltage / low-voltage).
Most likely it's a failed logic-board. But, the power supply can cause these symptoms as well.
Neither would mean that your hard drive is bad. It's possible that it is, but it's not an automatic definite.
If it were only the hard drive that failed, then you'd get the grey Apple screen with a flashing question-mark.
So, what I would do, is request them to fix the computer. But, I would put a stipulation on it that requires them to call you if they are going to re-format or replace the hard drive.
This way you'll know in advance if they are going to erase your data. You could then decide whether to pay them to archive it onto another media or back it up for you, or just let it go.
Explain to them that you have information you are concerned about saving. And, request them to at least let you know if their repair process is going to require them to do anything that might erase the hard drive.
I think that's about the best you can do at this point.
I hope this helps. -
*New Mac User* In love but mail not sending grrrrr.....
I am sure this is a common problem for Newbies like to me. Could someone please walk me through the problem I am having with the following error message:
Sending the message content to the server failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
Sending from: ***** <*****@mac.com>
I have tried switching outgoing port to 587...read that somewhere but still no luck..any suggestions?
Thanks alot :o)Do you have an ISP account as well as the mobileme one? If so is that working?
I have to set the outgoing server for my mobileme account to be my regular ISP server.
Change this in Mail/Preferences/accounts.
I have never changed port numbers.
Good luck -

Hi James,
My 5 other IOS devices work fine although this one was registered to a new itunes account.
I dont think this is down to extreme traffic on app store
The history of similar issues reported periodically on this forum would indicate otherwise, but no, I'm not stating unequivocally that the issue, just suggesting it as a possibility and that trying again in a day or so could be useful. -
Avi file from PC user has audio but not video
When I play a .AVI file from a PC user through Quicktime pro, I am getting no video, but can hear the file fine.
Any ideas what may be wrong?
Playing it on a PC gives full video & audio
Cheers
JustinUsing VLC is about as simple as it gets and if that will not play the avi they are encoded in a very rare codec. One last thing you can do is open the avi in QT Player and open MovieInfo in the Window menu. If it says they are encoded with an Indeo codec then there is no way to play them in OS X. There are Indeo codecs for the Classic environment but none for OS X. Indeo codecs for Classic

Iphoto doesn't crash but the wheel of death spins for 5-7 minutes
When I open and close iphoto it takes too long. When I upload pictures, after the pictures are loaded the wheel spins for 6 or 7 minutes. After I'm finished uploading photos, if I try use iphoto too quickly, the wheel comes on & spins for 5-7 minutes but does not crash.
i read that a few people have had this problem, myself included. I turned off "look for shared photos" option and it improved dramatically. (this hint was from macfixit.com)

Unstable internet connection and Safari/Firefox do not load
I'm trying to help a friend who has an iMac G5 running OS 10.4. with an ethernet connection and a Netgear router. AT&T/SBC is her ISP. She had no connection to the Network at all but I've didled with the settings including re-installing the router software. Now, she has an unstable connection to the Internet but neither Safari nor Firefox will load any site even when everything says it's connected.
When I run Network, Assist Me, Diagnostics, all lights are green. The modem will then occasionally flash red and lose the Internet connection even while I'm looking at Network Diagnostics showing all green and connected. Then the modem will find and return to solid green for Internet. Throughout all the solid green connections, Safari/Firefox will not go out and find and load any bookmark or new site. I assume I've missed something in the Network settings that's causing the instability and failure to run a browser.
Any suggestion to correct the Network settings would be appreciated. I assume that will fix the browser problem. Thanks.
BTW- She says it started when AT&T/SBC announced they were making email connection changes this month but I'm uncertain how that would change her ability to connect to the Internet. I think they're separate issues. Hopefully, I can fix the email problem (settings) when the Internet issue is resolved.Could be a hardware problem with ethernet port / cable / rouer / isp.
This might help narrow down.
You can use
harddrive > applications > utilities > network utility
to diagnose the situation.
# see whether software is defined correctly
ping 127.0.0.1
# ping you router address. Will have to look for address.
You can ping google.com.
Result:
Ping has started ...

If pinging 17.254.3.183 works but pinging Google.com doesn't. You have a bad DNS Server address.
I use Google.
Google provides free dns lookup. Their numbers are:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
BDAqua suggests in a post.
You can use OpenDNS for looking up web addresses.
Put these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for a try...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
I think they now pretend you need to join to use, but you don't.
https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/device/apple-osx-tiger
(Please note that you do not need to a joint Open DNS to use it.)

Can I do a 3 way video chat with two iMac users and 1 PC user?
Hi,
I'm due to have a video conference in a few days and I suddenly realized that one of us has a PC and two of us have iMacs. If the PC user were to get AIM, would it be possible for her to communicate with the two of us and can the two of us communicate with and see her? We live in 3 separate areas so we will be using three separate computers. If it is possible to do this, what do we all need to do? Also, I have iChat 5.0 and the other iMac user has whatever came with Tiger. I have done three way video conferences before without a problem but we've all had iChat. Thanks in advance.
JudyHi
Wont work with a PC in a 3 way in iChat.
Have a look at TokBox http://www.tokbox.com/view/about

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?
Thank you!Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.
