IMac v2 vs G5 desktop...the debate

I'm in the buying process, and I'm torn. Maybe you can help.
The 2 Ghz iMac looks really outstanding, but I do an awful lot of multitasking. I want to burn DVDs, browse the web, and have a torrent going at the same time. (With my maxed-out B&W, one or two is about the limit.) I know the Duals can handle this load, but they're more expensive than the iMacs, and they don't have that nice 20 inch screen.
How hard can you push the 2 Ghz iMac before you start getting image ghosting, slowdowns, or platters? Would I be better off with a machine (like the dual) that's basically designed for multitasking? I'm interested in your experiences with your iMac.

For what it is worth, I am currently burning a dvd, browsing the web, and have 2 torrents going on my iMac G5 with 1GB of memory. No hiccups or slowdowns at all.
The only time when I start to see some stuttering is when I've got 2 torrents going, Limewire going, Toast burning, iTunes running AND trying to play The Sims 2.
Basically, only when trying to play games is when I notice system stuttering of any sort.

Is the music I downloaded from my CD's already in the iCloud or only the music I purchased on itunes?

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

    Best regards, John.

because there is absolutely no mention in my System Preferences of either Users & Groups nor Start Up Items.
    John,
William's solution was much easier - just for completeness sake: The preferences panes to edit your startup items moved between the Mac OS X updates: I forgot that the "Users&Groups" preference pane used to be called "Users" in Mac OS X 10.6; it is the panel that you use to create new User accounts; and earlier systems had a separate preferences panel "Login" to enable and to disable the applications that are launched at login. Both are now combined in "Users&Groups". Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase with the wrong Preferences panel.

  • I bought a new imac running Loin and Office 2011. The server we use to access emails runs exchange 2003 and my IT person says the imac is not compatible with the server. The server does not want to let me access using any email software.

I bought a new imac running Loin with Office 2011. I am the only mac in the office and the Server we use to access emails runs exchange 2003 and my IT person says the imac is not compatible with the server. The server does not want to let me access using any email software other than webmail access through our website. It looks as though 2011 is not compatible with 2003 per some searches online, but what are some options I have to gain full access again? I purchased parallels in hopes that this my help and I am able to use remote desktop connection to log on to server but can not drag and drop files I need. There is a shared drive on that Server we all use to exchange files.
The two main issues are gaining access to my email again and ability to drag and drop files from mac to pc. I hope this is enough info to get some solutions.
PS - IT person says my iMac's IP is what his server does not understand so that is why I can not login.

Office 2011 is not compatbile with Exchange 2003.
I suggest you post further Office related questions on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac software:

  • How can i use my old iMac as a extended desktop display for my new iMac?

I recently purchased a 21.5 in iMac and wanted to use my old iMac as a extended desktop. My new iMac has thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connections while my old iMac has firewire (400 and 800), USB 2.0 and mini-DVI. Is this posible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network

  • Shutdown a remote iMac using Apple Remote Desktop and Automator action

    Hi,
I have my iMac and my wife's iMac connected to the same UPS. There is only one USB connector for the UPS that notifies my iMac when its time to shutdown due to a power cut out.
Is there a way for my iMac to then send a command to my wife's iMac (which may be asleep; the iMac not my wife!) and instruct it to shutdown (forcefully)?
The Belkin UPS software enables me to launch an automator action before it shuts down my computer.
    Your help would be appreciated,
    Tony

Unless you already have Apple Remote Desktop, it will almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a second UPS for your wife's iMac than it will be to purchase ARD.
If you do have ARD 3 already, then it looks like it would be possible to create an Automator workflow that would select your wife's iMac and then send the Unix command "shutdown" (look at the man page for shutdown for the usage). I haven't tried doing this, though, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like it would work.

My iMac (late 2010 model) desktop's hard drive is fried (was about 200GB). How much am I expecting to pay for a new one and retrieve my information?

As you can see Erin, trying to recover information from a hosed drive can be very expensive.
I would suggest first the OWC site as well. You can get a new drive of choice in size there.
I would also get the voyager  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VOYQHDB1.0T/
    and..
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Prosoft%20Engineering/DGDR3BUN/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT11/
Wth your lap top and these folllowing tools your are set to change out the drive, reload OS and then with
the voyager pop in the old iMac drive and with the Prosoft software, try to mount and recover the files. Data Rescue is very good at this " if " the drive is not totally mechanically hosed. Drive Genius is very good at a number of things too. Nothing replaces the old adage of Back Up Back up Back up.
The voyage I listed can become the new backup drive for you.. your choice of tools: Time Machine or by cloning via CarbonCopyCloner or by what I use SuperDuper! IF you want to be really kewl.. both. By that I mean cloning and Time Machine.
It will take you an hour to swap out the drive and spring clean the iMac.. there is a hundred how too,s on you tube.
Hope this helps. Remember if is always when a drive will fail..they all do. I tell the people I support that Harddrives are good for 15 min.. to when they don't work. They will all fail.
Apple Geniuses are very limited to what they can and will do as far as file recovery.
Your best bet is to try to do it your self first. There is lots of help out here and you are not the first.
    Don

  • I recently upgraded my old powerbook to an iMac.  I've dumped the files of my backup drive into the new iMac. Is there a way to have access to all the files (new and old computers) when logged on as the same user vs. logging in and out to access each?

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • My iMac is incredibly HOT to the touch in the back.

My iMac is so hot in the back, I can't hold my hand to it for any length of time.  Im a new Mac person, is this normal for a Mac? Thanks

Do you really believe what you are writing about this?
So, all of the optical drives, hard drives, GPUs and logic board failures that get posted here ( and since I been a part of these iMac forums for over a year, there have been a lot of them) are just normal wear and tear component failures and aren't internal heat related at all, huh? And they are isolated cases?
    I Call B.S.!!!
The aluminum case doesn't transfer the heat out as fast as it is being generated, internally. The fans run too slow and ramp up too late to move the heat out quick enough, either AND there is minimal outer case venting! Period.!
I own a LaCie LCD Monitor that has better rear cooling venting and that is just LCD monitor and not an AIO computer! Earlier iMac designs had much better venting systems than these newer Aluminum style models.
When I first got this iMac, mine was getting as hot as the OP's iMac. I found the fan control solution, ramped up the fans and run an external small desktop fan at the back of the iMac.
The internal fans run fast enough without the spinning noise being annoyingly loud.
I Am tired of seeing posts from all of the higher level users here telling people that the iMac getting hot, not just warm, is a normal characteristic and there should be no worry.
    It simply is not true.
A Cooler running iMac is a much happier and longer lasting and longer running iMac that will, most likely, have less premature, major component failures.
If the OPs iMac is running too hot, then take whatever precautions against this as you can!
I truly believe heat is the Achilles' heel to the trouble free, long life operation of these iMacs!

  • Imac crashes when i install the windows 7 sp1

So I have gotten past the intiall hurdle of installing windows 7 on my 27 inch Imac, which was not easy. it was done through boot camp and involved deleting a few key system files after the install crashes on reboot.
Now the computer is crashing when it attempts to install the sp1. Is their any fix for this yet. i believe all imac are having this problem. I am currently running windows without the sp1 installed. i am getting tired of how difficult it is to run windows on a mac. It is essential to my business to run both OS s.

Don`t know if this is to any help to you at all, but I run Windows 7 on my iMac 27" through Parallels Desktop and I have installed SP1 no problems at all. Maybe you could try that?

    Utter nonsense.

Just use the defaults. Windows 7 is very slow and really RAM-hungry. You will need 8 GB of RAM on your Mac because Windows 7 needs 2 GB all by itself. Even with that, it runs twice as slow as Windows XP.
If you've already spent money, there isn't much you can do at this point. I suggest using Apple Pages and, when you are ready to submit something to your professor, export it as a Word document and then re-save that Word document as a Word XML doc. I don't know why Pages doesn't export in docx format. It is built into the operating system. I even have a little utility that will save your clipboard directly to docx. You can download a fully-functional demo from: http://www.etresoft.com/pastefiler
There are many other utilities that can do the same, including Office 2011 itself. I prefer Pages because it supports modern OS X technologies and is much faster and easier to use than Word, but Pages only exports to DOC, not DOCX. Word is better if you are doing really sophisticated document, but it costs a fair amount money.

Nothing personal to you or Rajshee, but this is exactly why I absolutely despise these "community forums" (not just Adobe but any company).  I called the Tech Support phone line today after digging and digging for a phone number, and they told me the exact opposite, and they did it a lot faster than it was possible to get a forum response.  (That's really not personal, because you can't control that, but it's a fact.)
Their answer: As long as I'm signed in with the same ID, I can try, say, Photoshop CC on my iMac at home and also try Acrobat Pro CC on my Windows 7 machine at work.  Same account, same login, one trial.
This makes complete sense to me as I'm financially on the hook (potentially) for the same package.  If I give away my login to someone else, which I wouldn't do, I'm still on the hook.  This is why the cloud approach to software is such genius and I applaud it.
BTW, 99% of the "community forum" wrong answers come on Microsoft sites, so don't feel bad.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=time%20machine
And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).

When I turn on my iMac it comes up with the login icons which I then choose and log into. The password works and I then get the apple icon and the spinning wheel. After about a minute the Apple icon turns into a prohibited icon. However, if I log in under the guest icon, I can access the wifi and get to Safari. I really don't know what to do next. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you running any A-V? If it's an iMac 21.5, I don't think you're running Leopard, 10.5. Probably at least Snow Leopard, 10.6. This is the Leopard forum.
This article says meant for 10.3.9 and eariler, but contains some still useful suggestions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411
Try a Safe Boot. Shift at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot. This will bring you to a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
    Look at this as well.
