IMac very slow, no Dock, Desktop Background cycling every 1 to 5 sec

So i have always had the issue of the main display not coming back on from sleep.... I have given up on trying to fix it so i just deal with it. But i really needed my mac and so forced it to shut down because it seemed to be acting strange and i could not see the main screen just my external monitor.
Anyway when it restarted i now have a very slow machine.... creazy slow. Every click is a delay. My background which normally cycles through the standard images every 30 min does so every 1 to 5 seconds. And i have no Dock.
My machine is an intel iMac.. 27" late 2009, 8 gigs of ram 1 tera of HD. 60 gb free. 2.8 ghz i7
Oh and OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
I have tried resetting pram and plists for the main things including the Dock. I repaired permissions and did a disk repair.
I am kind of stuck.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I tried changing the Dock settings but they dont make any difference. I also tried changing the desktop background settings and they dont do anything either and they do not save their settings when i reboot etc...
Thanks
Q

  • All programs run very slow from dock

programs run very slow from dock sometimes does not open at all

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • Have 2009 time capsule  with 6 month old iMac  very slow cox said i needed to replace with a new time machine with newer wifi ??

have 2009 time capsule with 6 month old iMac  very slow  ...cox said to replace with new router or extreme with new wifi ???? confused

Replace the Time Capsule with a new one or replace your router with an Airport Extreme Base Station that has faster Wi-Fi. Or you could just connect your old Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection from the Time Capsule to the computer's Ethernet port.

  • Mid-2010 27" iMac very slow, even after clean OS install - HELP!

Good afternoon guys, I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I bought my Mid-2010 27" iMac in May-ish 2011. Everything was brilliant, I couldn't believe the ease of use, and especially the start up speed, coming from a world of PCs. My iMac was used almost every day, for web browsing, photo editing, etc.
Maybe about April / May this year it started becoming very slow, slow to boot, slow to respond to mouse clicks, slow to do anything. Since I'd used about 750GB of my HDD (mainly photos), I decided I would archive some and hope that would ease the congestion. As my photos were stored in Aperture, it took about 3 days to export them all to my external HDD, 3 days of the iMac only getting so far, switching itself off, then me finally getting it to come back on (I was getting messages about Kernals, etc. now and again through boot too) - it finally backed up my photos I have from my daughters first year.
Great news, but I still had probably 400GB / 500GB of photos from her second year and any other photos I'd taken. I found the root of my Aperture directory, and managed to pull these images off, so everything is now backed up.
I decided I should try and clean install, and managed to get the HDD to boot and choose the option to re-install from Apple's Servers. All installed OK, and we're good to go! Fired up the iMac, and although it's fractionally quicker to respond, and a lot more stable, it's not quite right. And I've lost all my iLife Apps which originally came with the iMac.
Does this sound like a HDD issue? As I say, it was on quite a lot through the backup procedure, and I had set it (maybe stupidly looking back now) to never sleep, and for the monitor to only switch off after 3 hours. Or does it sound like something more is wrong with it?
I am quite confident of working with PCs, so would manage to replace the HDD I think, looking at some videos, etc. online. I did upgrade the RAM to 16GB, and that was simple enough. My question is, when you replace the HDD, how does it know where to look to the Apple Servers for the clean OS install? Or do I have to do something to let it know where to look first? I have to point out I don't have any Time Machine backup, etc. as the iMac was just not stable enough to get this in place - and up until that point, again probably stupid now looking back, I had never bothered to set up.
Any help / advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. At the moment I have totally fallen out of love with the iMac, for something to cost £1,500+ and only last 3 years, where my last build PC lasted Approx 8 years for half the price, is very disappointing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Col

Just suggesting things right off the bat here-
To me it sounds as though the HDD is failing, if your iMac shipped with a Seagate drive try entering your serial number to see if Apple will replace it:http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac-harddrive/
Or try running Apple Hardware Test a few times back to see if it is a hardware error.
As for the iLife apps they should've come on one of the install discs that shipped with your mac.
If your iMac is ineligible for the program above I would consider replacing it yourself with either an SSD or HDD, as for recognising apples servers for download, you will need the original install discs that came with your computer or if you haven't already it will need a firmware update to enable internet recovery
See here:Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
    Good Luck!

  • New iMac very slow? why?

    Hi,
I have recently bought brand new iMac 21,5" 2,7 Ghz i5 with 8GB ram and 1 TB memory. I have transfered all data from Time Machine backup. And my computer is very very slow with apps, expecialy when it wakes up from sleep. I turn on safari, illustrator and photoshop and it takes 10 minutes to became normal. If I open mail it is very very slow. Also, twitter app. I don't know where the problem is. It is brand new computer. It has all the power. I have checked "verify disk" and everything is ok. I have repaired all permissions, and still nothing. iPhoto is extremely slow but its just iPhoto, very bad program.
But after 5-10 minutes after wakeup iMac starts to behave normal. When Photoshop is turned on (after 5-10 min) it starts to act normal. Sometimes excel doesn't won't to turn on. Mouse icon turns rainbow circle and nothing. I force quit it and start again and after 2-3 minutes it opens.
Does anybody have an idea what should i do?

    Thank you. Here are info:

  • Why is my iMac very slow to download Safari

I bought my iMac in Feb/12. It has run very well since then. All of a sudden in the last week, downloading Safari after turning on the computer takes a long time. Safari is downloading very slow and sluggish. Anything else I try to open after turning on computer also opens very slowly. I don't dare close Safari until I'm finished with computer now, because it will take forever to open it up again.
I was running Bitdefender on my computer before. Bitdefender doesn't work right, so I uninstalled it, but still have the program in my Applications area. Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down? Is some form of Adaware doing this? Before my iMac, I use to have a Windows XP computer, and I'd scan for viruses in a case like this, which would usually help. But Bitdefender on here did not work, and now I'm wondering what I should do? Where should I even start? Because this can't continue.  Please help!  Thanks

Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down?
Yes. Back up all data, then uninstall "Bitdefender" completely according to the developer's instructions -- NOT by dragging an application to the Trash or hunting for files by name.

  • Slow processing of desktop background

    Hi all,
If have a question again. I have created a GPO for a desktop background. The enviroment is Server 2012R2.
When I click on the start buttom, in the tumbnail the background is displayed. But when I switch to the desktop it isn't displayed.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
    Best reagrds,
    Willem

    Hi Frank,
Thanks for your response. I made a policy using this method:
Setting the Desktop Wallpaper Background with Group Policy Administrative Templates
If you wish to enforce a particular background and prevent users from changing it, you will need to use Administrative Templates. The setting Desktop WallPaper can be found at User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Desktop\Desktop\. Strangely,
there is a Desktop Folder within a Desktop folder…
I have save the image on a UNC path and set this in the policy. So when I logon the background is applied to some users, but not to all users.
As you can see in the start page the desktop background is diplayed (called bureaublad in dutch), but when I switch to the dekstop it is filled out black.
One more question, do you know if there is a option to force the background regardless the setting of the rdp client?Thank for your reply.
    Bets regards Willem
I found the solution, I add also the regkey into to policy and now it is working fine.

  • Since downloading iPhoto 11 9.2.1 on iMac very slow and crashes

I purchased and downloaded iPhoto 11 9.2.1 from iTunes store.  Since then iPhoto is very slow, spinning color wheel on most of the time, and computer freezes and have to restart most time I use iPhoto.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IMac very slow after several hours of use, esp. when using Photoshop

    Hi all,
I have a fairly new iMac (mid-2008 20" model) with a 2.4ghz Intel processor. I am a web designer and use this machine every day for my work. Several months after installing Adobe Creative Suite 3, I noticed that Photoshop was causing the cursor to jump and/or become jerky, as if the video card or processor were not keeping up with what's going on. This tends to happen after the computer's been in use for several hours or days after a restart. I have been following this in Leopard's Activity Monitor, and I noticed that Photoshop (being memory- and processor- hungry) taxes the processor more heavily than many other programs, which I expected. The strange thing, though, is that over time the Activity Monitor shows the "System" as taking up more and more processor capacity. I.E. when I first start up, the system is using 0-20% of the processor, the rest being available for the user; but after awhile, the system is requiring 50-90% of processor capacity, the result being that as soon as I switch into Photoshop from another program, the system is immediately overtaxed and starts moving very slowly (especially the cursor, as I said).
Now, here's the really strange part. As I said, this began happening a few months after I first installed Adobe CS3. I re-installed the software at Adobe's recommendation, and it was fine for another few months, but it began happening a few days ago, which is exactly the same time I shared a jump drive with a friend's worm-infected Windows XP machine. I know Macs don't get Windows worms, but is it possible that this thing has lodged itself on my system somehow and is causing it to run generally more slowly?
I appreciate any help you can give,
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
How much free disk space is available? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is way better.
Not enough disks space could certainly slow your Mac down.
" but it began happening a few days ago, which is exactly the same time I shared a jump drive with a friend's worm-infected Windows XP machine. I know Macs don't get Windows worms, but is it possible that this thing has lodged itself on my system somehow and is causing it to run generally more slowly"
Mac can't read Windows files, so a file from the jump drive shouldn't be an issue unless you are running Windows on your Mac? via Boot Camp?
    If you don't have a disk utility that can clear log and caches files, get TinkerTool available here;
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11967
Check your boot disk for errors: Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer using Remote Install Mac OS X. Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.

  • Help with very slow old palm desktop 1.0 for MAC

    No device
Hi- I am a happy user of Palm m515, and hot synch it to a very old Mac that runs palmpilot desktop 1.0 , cause I like the printouts. Recently, it would start to  open the desktop, but it wouldn't open, I think due to out of memory. I purged calendar and todo from my handheld (which I had not done for years), and hot synced it. Address book & memos synced normally, and the syncing of todo's took hours, and I'm not sure it was successful. However, afterwords, I was able to re-open the desktop, and it works, but it is painfully slow, basically not functional.
I realize this is legacy stuff, but if there is anyone out there who has suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.
And, I have an old iMac G5 that I am about to retire and buy a new iMac, and if anyone has suggestions for replacing the handheld with one that will run a good todo/task program (and recommendation for that one), also much appreciated.
And if there is a way for me to transfer the data from handheld m515 to my new iMac?
    Thanks

I had an identical experience when I first got my handheld - the palm software wouldn't install on my iMac properly - the same error came up every time, and while it had successfully installed the desktop, hotsync manager was sadly missing. I spent hours playing with it to no avail, and the only solution I found was using it on my macbook running 10.5x (as opposed to 10.2.8). However, the date on the installer (2002) reflects the last time it was updated, which means that it should run with no difficulty on any machine since then. The .sit compression has nothing to do with it - it is one of the most common compression formats for the macintosh platform. It might help if you posted the exact error message you got, but a fairly common fix is to repair disk permissions for your hard drive in disk utility.
    Hope this helps

  • IMac very slow after upgrading to Yosemite

    Hi,
Can you help me in optimising my iMac?
I've upgraded to Yosemite (what a mistake!) and now the videos on the net are endlessly charging, my track pad is not that responsive and my iMac is soo slow! Please help me.
    thank you

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • HT6346 New iMac very slow after upgrading to Yosemite...

I recently purchased a 21.5 inch iMac and had it specced up. I was very happy with it until last week when I upgraded it to Yosemite. It has slowed down significantly. When switching between programmes and selecting different actions, it appears to stop, then the "thinking wheel" appears, before carrying out the requested command. Sometimes as much as 10 seconds. For example: the simple act of hitting "reply" in mail, it takes as much a s10 seconds to open a reply mail. I videoed it several times. Very disappointed...
    Specs
    iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013)
    3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB
just the process of copying and pasting the specs from About this Mac, took ages. Each line "thought" about it for several seconds before allowing me to select it.

Similar problem here too (quite high spec 2011 iMac 27") ; takes longer to boot up and Safari is slower under Yosemite than Mavericks.I  have just installed Firefox and had a play around with it and it is much faster than safari ~ just couldn't get the appearance the way I liked so uninstalled. This morning I was using a five year old Compaq (averagely specced) and using Chrome it was much much faster than Safari is currently. I like Apple products (and just bought a new iPod classic for spare ) have, iPad etc but these 'upgrades' are like puling teeth for me. IOS 8 was useless on iPad 2 but improved slightly yesterday with IOS 8.1. I have little interest in technology as an end in itself, ( hifi and audio is my thing) just wanting it to work. I still can't send emails since Yosemite was installed last week as 'smtp servers are offline' ~ well, no they're not as email still works on iPad, android phones and compaq using the same servers.  This really irritates. I was so impressed with iPad 2 when I got it ~ it set itself up virtually and I was sold on Apple's ease of use but I don't get back the 3 hours I spent last Friday checking settings, deleting accounts, re-adding email  accounts and ultimately failing to fix it.
Yesterday I went to a famous dept store here in the UK to get an iPad mini with retina display as our iPad 2 is 3 years old  but I left the store without buying it; just got sidetracked by looking at Samsung and believe it or not, Surface 3 program microsoft. Enough doubt in my mind after IOS7/8 and now Yosemite.
I still think Apple's products are beautifully designed and aesthetically and ergonomically impressive, but the Yosemite experience is draining; everyone glad handing about how great it is and it patently isn't. The design changes in the mac mini (lower performance than 2012 model ) and iMac (5K screen notwithstanding, much more difficult to make internal changes)) looks like arrogance.
Sorry for the negative rant but that's almost certainly me done

  • IMac very slow esp. in Photoshop, has corrupted fonts

    Hi all,
I have an iMac that runs quite slowly after a few hours use, especially when using Photoshop and other Adobe software. What happens is, the processor gets completely swamped with "System" tasks (shown in Activity Monitor as red bars), the result being that "User" tasks are slow and the mouse jumps around the screen, rendering the computer almost useless. I've done a bunch of disk utilities including Leopard's onboard Disk Utility as well as OnyX, and although some errors were found, it was nothing serious. And after repairing, problems persisted.
Now, here's the thing. When I open Console, most of the errors are Adobe-related (mostly Photoshop and Dreamweaver). And I just ran a "Validate Fonts" check in Font Book, and found 15 fonts that have "serious errors, do not use".
So, I've often heard that Leopard, Adobe CS3, and corrupted fonts are a lethal combination. Not that I'm asking anyone to diagnose my problems from across the world, but does this sound like it could be the root of my problem? And if so, what's the proper process for removing the dangerous fonts so they can't ruin anything? Do I just delete them, or do corrupted fonts cause deeper problems which might necessitate reinstallation?
    Thanks!

BTW, turn off the bad fonts with Font Book and see if the performance returns to normal.

  • Lightroom 5.6 Cropping on new 5K iMac very slow

Upgraded to new 27" 5K iMac with 4.0GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5 and 32GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM. Processing photos from last night's football game and when cropping photos Lightroom is terribly slow. Any suggestions.
