Rest assured your decision is a wise one, it sounds like you're getting a very nice iMac and software. My recommendation is to purchase from Apple but at the end of the day your support will still come directly from Apple. The only additional thing I would add to your purchase is AppleCare, however you don't need to buy it directly from Apple, many resellers (including Amazon) sell it for much less.
If you haven't already I would recommend getting youand your existing data ready by going over these sites and taking the advice given.

As far as virus protection you don't need any because there are not any OS X virus's. If you are really paranoid you can download ClamXav. You can locate it by Googling it, it's a free and effective antivirus program.
Another thing I would recommend is getting yourself an external HD to use for your Time Machine drive for doing backups.
Best of luck and enjoy your new iMac.

  • Apple/Imac virgin How do I set up different users

New to Apple community and trying to set up different account/users for my imac

System preferences -> Users & Groups -> Click the + in the Bottom left corner ( You may need to unlcok the padlock beneath to make changes, it  will unlock with your user password) Then set up a new account. If you click on Login Options also you can change automatic login for yourself so your Mac does not automatically login.

  • My husband bought an imac for the first time.  We backed up our separate itunes libraries on external hard drive but when it was retrieved, the 2 libraries had merged and they only appear in my husbands area.  How do we split them back up again?

Really need some help here.  We got the guys at PC World to back up our old computer onto and external hard drive, but our libraries merged.  I've tried retrieving the whole thing from the external hard drive but can't seem to identify any files to retrieve.  If I could copy the whole thing into my area, we could both just erase the things from each others' libraries that we didn't want.  We are imac virgins, and need some advice!

if it's content purchased from the iTunes store we're talking about, the following script will help to tell the files apart:
    Track Down Purchases
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.
for content you added manually (i.e. CD rips), i don't know of any easy way once the libraries were merged.

  • New iMac, Garageband User

COMPLETE iMac virgin here. I have a feeling I'll be consulting online a lot. First off, what is the best keyboard to get for GarageBand? I want to take advantage of the lessons program and want an idea of what the spectrum is as far as price and flexibility.

If you're looking for good bang for the buck, I highly recommend M-Audio. they make great controller keyboards that are reasonably priced and work well with GB. As poflynn said, the more you're a keyboardist, the more you'll appreciate a better physical keyboard - one with semi-weighted or fully weighted keys.
Something like the Axiom has semi-weighted keys, the keystation pro has fully weighted ones.
If you're using the keyboard mainly to access GB sounds, it's less important that it includes its own sounds (like a synth would) - it's only an empty vessel connected to the computer via MIDI (or directly via USB) to control virtual instruments inside the box.
    Here's their controllers:

  • Motion 1 (not on intel machine) so what now...

I'm an IMac virgin... well almost. I got my first IMac (intel based) about a month ago, not knowing that there was this great (G4,G5-intel) chasm. I bought Motion 1 only to find out after I loaded it that it doesn't work on my machine! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done this. It seems, by what I've read so far, that there is no way to upgrade to a (WORKING VERSION) and that APPLE doesn't really care about it's customers. Am I right...
    1. Do I sell Motion 1 to someone who can use it
    2. Do i wait to see if Apple ever realizes that (maybe they should make an upgrade available)
    3. Do i wait to see if Apple ever releases a stand alone version of MOTION that WILL run on my machine
    4. Do I sell my IMac and go back to WINDOWS :-(

I'm accusing apple of not caring about their customers because they don't offer an upgrade for a product they know won't run on intel based machines and they offer no way to buy Motion2, as a stand alone. Yes I bought without "researching" as much as I, NOW know I have to with apple products. I'm use to seeing (minimal requirements) and I stupidly thought my intel based IMac met the (minimal requirements) as I think most PC users would. I now, know this is wrong thinking. So... I'm stuck with unuseable software and no way to upgrade or just buy motion 2, without having to buy the whole bundle.
Don't get me wrong, I like my mac I just get frustrated with this kind of thing and I just don't understand why apple doesn't sell motion 2 as a stand alone. If anyone at apple is listening! PLEASE make it avaliable as a stand alone, I can't afford the entire suite at this time.

  • How do I Connect a F4580 to an imac using a Virgin Netgear Hub

I have just tried to connect the printer to a new imac and I am able to print using the USB cable but when I disconnect this I cannot find the printer on my network.   I have read several threads and many mention using the installation CD.   The imac doesn't have a disc drive and the driver I have downloaded comes from Apple Software Updates.
I do not understand how to connect the printer to the wifi.   The Mac Airport utility cannot find the printer.   Surely I will somehow need to enter the network name and password but I have not been through a set-up process which requires this and do not understand how to initiate one.
I have taken hours and achieved nothing so far so I am now very frustrated!!   Help would be much appreciated!!
    This question was solved.

If indeed you have a Netgear Hub, then that is the wrong piece of network equipment.  If it is a Virgin Netgear router, then that will work.  The connection must use a router.
Unfortunately, there is no software from HP to help you install this printer (assuming your new iMac has OS 10.8).  So, we will have to do it manually:
    1. Reset the printer.  Pull the power cord out of the back of the printer for 30 seconds.
    2. When the printer turns back on, on your Mac look for a wireless network that begins with 'hp", likely "hpsetup".  Join it.
    3. Print a Wireless Network Test from the front of the printer.  Note its IP address.
    4. Type that IP address into Safari web browser.
    5. Navigate to the Network or Wireless tab and look for Wireless Setup Wizard.  Run it.
    6. Finally, connect your Mac back to your regular wireless network, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan and add the printer with the '+' sign.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Adapter for iMac 27" as display for virgin media V+ HD box?

Hi, I'd like to connect a virgin media V+ HD box  box to my 27" iMac [3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, late 2009]
The virgin media V+ HD box provides both dvi and hdmi outputs.
iMac 27" manual states: supports input from external DisplayPort sources (requires cables and adapters, sold separately).
Can anyone recommend an adapter for this purpose?
Ideally, the adapter would carry audio as well as picture and Target Display Mode (shift-F2?) would flip between the two.
    Thanks,

Wht are you trying to do? It sounds like the goal is to watch TV or other video that comes in on the Virgin box and use the iMac as a display. If that is the case please visit www.elgato.com, they supply various devices that can fulfil that need.

  • Netgear WNR2000 Router (Virgin Media 50Mb/s) & iMac

    Hi,
have just upgraded to the Virgin Media 50Mb/s broadband service and have used the free router they provide - a rather fetching Netgear WNR2000 in shiny black garb.
I did not want to use the USB dongle that is provided with the router as my iMac is 802.11n enabled. I have checked to see that it is enabled as per the Apple knowledge base article.
I have set the router wireless speed at "up to 300Mbps" and it says it is using channels 2(p) + 6(s).
However, I can only get a 130Mbps connection at my iMac which is less than 20 feet away from the router with no walls or phones or other electrical equipment between.
Do I have to enable something on my iMac to get the faster connection speed to be made??
I prostrate myself at the feet of your greater wisdom and await enlightenment.....

I also use Virgin as my ISP and i was lead to believe (by Virgin themselves) that i wouldn't be able to use a wireless at all with them as i was running an intel imac...
I take it this has changed then ?
Sorry to be no help whatsoever Avian !

  • Buying iMac from virgin ?

    hi guys
    I wanna buy iMac i7
but I don't have apple store in my country
so I heard that the best reseller is "Virgin"
my question is , does virgin got all kinds of iMac ?
and does it has the same price or it's a bit higher ?
    how much higher ?
    (BTW I'm in Bahrain)

Great question, why don't you contact them and ask? I see there are other resellers in your country, for shopping you will need to do this yourself. Here in the US where we have the luxury of Apple Stores and resellers so we have a lot of choices. However it's up to each individual who they want to purchase from which means they have to do their own research on pricing, delivery, return policies, additional value added services, etc..
    Good luck!

  • IMac and Virgin Media TiVo

Hi all, this may be a stupid question but is there a way of connecting a late 2009 iMac 27" to a Virgin Media TiVo box?
Currently we watch Freeview through EyeTV USB connected to rooftop arial.
    Thanks and regards.

Well this is the whole issue - apparently this will only work FROM the iMac TO and HDMI device, i.e. large screen etc to watch something played on the Mac on a larger screen etc.
Apparently the MDP will only accept MDP signals when sending data IN so if you are sending something FROM an HDMI port TO the MDP you will need a converted as it appears to only recognise MDP signals ie other MBP or iMacs etc.
But again, I dont know this so I am asking to see if anyone has experience.
JUst a bit of background, I do not own a TV and cant afford one right now. The Virgin Media service has only been preordered and has to be installed so there is time to cancel it should i find out that I cannot make this work.
I havent tried any of this but am researching to see if it is possible so I know whether to start the tivo service or not or to cancle it.
You might ask why am i using an iMAc as a TV, well we have all the other iDevices at home and it is currently already been used as a TV through the Elgado EyeTV USB stick to watch freeview.

  • I have just purchased the new iMAC(21.5-inch Mid 2011) my ISP is Virgin Media wireless.....

My ISP is virgin media wireless (just purchased). My email account is AOL when I log into my email account the page is not the same as my on my old computer. Thinking it is because I do not have the latest version I downloaded the 9.0 version but when I try to open it for some reason mac enters the down load into an email. After much hair pulling I send it to my email account to open but am unable to open it any ideas please ?

Not possible via Apple's target display mode. This Apple article has the details:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    It is a Mac-to-Mac function.
You may be able to use a software solution. Won't be as fast but is doable:

  • Late 2009 imac super slow virgin media WiFi

    Hi All,
    I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on a late 2009 iMac 27"
A few onths back I had issues with WiFi dropping off, these issues appeared to have returned.
I did find a driver roll back page that helped me last time round but can no longer find it
In addition to this I have the following problem as well.
I am sitting here in front of my Mac and also have a Win 7 HP laptop.
    I am running speedtest.net on them both pinging the same servers for a speedtest and the results are;
    Virginmedia 30Mbps connection:
    Imac
    ping 27ms
    Download 14.24Mbps
    Upload 2.7Mbps
    HP Laptop
    Ping 30ms
    Download 21.29Mbps
    Upload 2.61Mbps
So, in a nutshell my 4 year old £350 laptop is kicking the pants off my £1800 4 year old iMac
Anyone got any ideas as to why this may be?
Both machines are running only safari/chrome respectively, no other internet load is present.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mark..

Mark, have you tried changing the wi fi channel on your router?

  • TS3679 Backing up iMac using time capsule 2TB with Virgin media super hub

Can anywone help.  -  On the time machine screen, the message constantly says "preparing backup".  It has been saying this for hours.
I have wired the ATC into the superhub correctly and can see the ATC in the Airport utility.
When i first setup the ATC it gave me another network name which I could connect to.  I don't require any other networks - I just want the to back up my imac using time machine and nothing else.
My aiport settings are as follows
Base station name = myname airport capsule.
Wireless - Network mode = OFF
Route mode = OFF (bridge mode)
    Are these settings correct??
Is there anything else I can do to sort this out.

Hi Johny have you resolved this? I just caught your post looking for something else today. If you have NOT resolved it, it's highly likely this is a NETWORKING issue and is simple to resolve.
Look first in the diagnostic logs by launching /applications/utilities/console.app and look for SYSTEM LOGs in the side bar of the UI. If the problem is persistent there will be some messages in here.
SELECTIVELY post these in this thread. Please don't flood it with any lines of noise. Try and be selective (surgical) of your error messages.
I'm sure others reading this post will also help you get this working.
Post your results for others to see.

  • Set G4 1.25 ghz iMac w 10.4.11 to new virgin state

Happy fourth all, I've a new to me g4 1.25 ghz imac, and I loaded, and updated tiger to 10.4.11, after doing a 7 pass erase, and would now like to set it to a new never been turned on right out of the box condition. I'll then be transferring everything over from a g3 imac after getting everything in order, and cleaned up on it. I've found a few articles on the subject but apparently I've not found the right article addressing 10.4.11 on a g4 1.25 ghz imac fp as I haven't been able to get rid of all the accounts, and I sure would like to.
    Thank you,
    ez

    Hi,
For some reason while using terminal it wouldn't delete the accounts. So I presumed I've been using the wrong set of terminal commands for a g4 1.25 ghz fp imac running osx 10.4.11. I didn't fully realize this until transferring everything over via firewire, and setting the g3 into target disk mode. I was then prompted to replace or not my account on the g4 with the account on the g3. I opted to replace it, but more than halfway through the transfer the new pup here gave the power cord on the g3( it has a lose connection internally ) a yank, so had to start the whole transfer over again, and found out all 3 accounts were now duplicated .
    Thank you,
