IMac volume reset upon startup

Upon startup/restart, my iMac’s volume resets from mute to just above mid-volume. I have reset the PRAM several times, and it has not made a difference. I would like my iMac to start up silent like it always has. Any suggestions?

Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Failing that, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • Mac Mini Resets upon startup... Help?

I recently got this Mac Mini, and I am having this problem where every time I restart it, everything is reset... the dock, the desktop background, my settings and preferences, etc.
It also resets it's name to the previous owners name (even though I keep changing it).
I've run the disc utility - repair (from the hard drive, not the install disc). It didn't help.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Have you created a new Administrator account, or are you just renaming the previous user home folder?
If you did the latter (renaming the home folder), it will not work. You have to create a new account (in System Preferences/Accounts).
    Good Luck.

  • IMac is asking for admin login password upon startup when it never did before, settings are still on auto login. Why is it doing this out of the blue?

iMac is asking for admin login password upon startup when it never did before, settings are still on auto login. Why is it doing this out of the blue?

Is sounds like it might for some reason booting into Safe Mode, which does prompt for a password.
    Try a PRAM reset:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If that doesn't help, restart holding down the option key which should take you to the startup manager. Select Macintosh HD (you may need to use the arrows on the keyboard if the kb is Bluetooth), tap 'enter'. Does it boot normally now?

  • IMac G3 will not recognize USB upon startup?

The iMac G3 seems to be fine hardware wise, however, it will not accept any input upon startup and I cannot boot from a CD. I have tried booting whole holding down the C key, tried booting into options, open firmware, etc. All with no luck, it just continues to boot into a very blank OS 9.2 screen which I can do nothing with. Once it has "booted" I can move the mouse around, so the UBS ports do work, they're just not recognized when the machine turns on. I am using a standard Apple USB "Blue" Keyboard from 1999, so I can't imagine that being the problem.
I believe it is running a very old version of Macintosh Manager, as after a half hour it gives up trying to find a connection and asks me for a Admin Username and Password to quit into the finder, I have none. I am trying to boot using an original retail version of Mac OS X v10.0.3. This should theoretically be fine, as the firmware update was for v10.2 and newer, correct?
I have no idea, even if the CD drive is dead, shouldn't I at least be able to boot into terminal, open firmware, or startup manager?
    Please help.

Jjust out of curiousity, what are you using for "boot from cd"?
I'd concur with your assesment of a bad cd drive. Perhaps you could try another drive from ebay.
Is this a try or slot iMac?  Does the slot of firewire?  I'd get a firewire cd drive if your machine supports it.

  • HT1529 Upon startup my iMac has a popup that says: "talagent wants to use the local items keychain."  New to me--can't get anywhere.  How do I get out of this and get things up and running again?

Upon startup my iMac (OSX Mavericks) has a popup (that I can't get rid of!) that says: "talagent wants to use the local items keychain."  I never set this up, don't want it, and want my iMac to start up with my desktop in place and ready to work.  I'd appreciate some help please.  How do I get rid of this?  Thanks.

I found this and it fixed my issue..
I was suffering with this same problem, I followed these steps and everything returned to normality:
1.- I opened KeyChain app and run the FirstAid (from the KeyChain app Menu)with my user Password (this do work) because the problem is not with your password. If there is any trouble with your keychain file this will fix it.
2.- Opened Disk Aid and run Fix Persmissions just in case there was left some wrong file permissions during the upgrade.
3.- Went back to the Key Chain App and Locked and Unlocked the Keychain using the Lock in the top left corner of the app. When asked for my password I simply typed my User password.
After this everything worked fine. These are the steps that I followed but I really think that #3 did the trick here. You could try to do only #3 directly and it might fix your problem, but fixing the Keychain and fixing OS permissions is never a bad Idea.
    Good Luck friends.

Call Apple with the Serial and they will send you the ones that came with the Mac. Or search the Net.

  • I have a Free Agent external backup hard drive connected to my iMac Intel desktop via USB.  Why do I get an error message, from time to time, upon startup stating: "disk was disconnected improperly, always eject disk before disconnecting"?

I have a Free Agent external backup hard drive connected to my iMac Intel desktop via USB, I never unplug it.  Why do I get an error message, from time to time, upon startup stating, "Disk was disconnected improperly.  Always eject disk before disconnecting."?

I never unplug the external harddrive, and the error message comes up only occassionaly upon startup.  Maybe the USB connection gets disrupted enough to cause the computer to see it as disconnected and then reconnected while the iMac is powered.

  • IMac will no longer startup, is my HDD corrupted?

    Hello,
As a result of a problem i have bee totally unable to use my computer for anything and work has been extremely difficult.
Recently I have been encountering a problem which occured occasionally when trying to turn off my imac in wich a grey screen would appear with a message telling me to manually turn off my imac from the power button. I continued to do this for  a while when it occasionally popped up, and once more this happened, but when i started up my mac the next day a loading bar appeared underneath the apple icon during boot. A few seconds after what I assumed was an update finished, the imac crashed and turned off. I turned it back on multiple times and attempted the process, whatever it was doing again and again.
As i could no longer access my Macintosh HD without it trying to load this bar and crashing, i held down Alt upon startup and selected recovery HD to run disk utility to see what was up. I verifyed the Hard drive itself and it told me that all was fine, however if i attempt to verify the "Macintosh HD" no matter how many ways I do it, I always end up with a few messages and the ones in red tell me "there is an incorrect number of threads", "invalid volume directory count", "(it should be 208010 instead of 208009)" and finally "The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired." then "Error: this disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk"
    If I try to reapir the disk i always get the same result, Disk Utility attempts to repair the volume three times before telling me;
"Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I can't access the disk to backup my files and therefore i do not want to have to erase it, so i tryed the reinstall os x option instead, to see if reinstalling mountain lion was the problem, however when i want to choose where i want to install mountain lion the disk is greyed out with the message "this disk is locked".
I am currently stuck for solutins as i had not set up a time machine to back up my files as i didnt have an external hard drive and therefore can't restore from a backup and i am reluctent to simply erase my disk as i just have too many files; music, documents programs, photos etc and it would be absolutely destroying if I had to erase them all completely.
What should I do? Is there anyway to save all my stuff before simply jumping ship? Any pointers appreciated.

It sounds like you've tried all the usual methods of trying to fix things but, unfortunately it sounds bad, especially as you have no backup plan in place.
I fear your options are limited and that you may end up having to do an erase and install with the unavoidable consequence of losing your data.
There are professional services out there that can try and retrieve your data (normally expensively, and with no guarantees), as well as software you can buy that may or may not help.
There is also Disk Warrior (www.alsoft.com) which has a good reputation for resuscitating failed drives - again there are no guarantees and I think it costs around $100.
Maybe someone else will spot this thread and have some other suggestions.

  • MacBook Air error code page upon startup

If anyone could help, I have no experience or knowledge at all about how to fix my MacBook Air!
Basically I used my laptop as normal last week and upon startup today, a grey error code page appears and I can't get past it, basically my laptop is not usable just now.
The error coding is along the lines of:
Unable to find driver for this platform
    Debugger called: <panic>
Mac OS version: not yet set
    Something about kernel versions?
I've tried to reinstall my OS X mountain lion but it was taking hours and not making a single bit of progress, can anyone suggest anything? I have no idea which version of Mountain Lion I have/had so I just selected the earliest one...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • OUTPUT volume resets to high after reboot

I turn the OUTPUT volume down then shut the computer off but when I boot it up the OUTPUT volume is hi again. I have reset pram, repaired permissions and still the same.
Must be a pref bad somewhere.
There are no stuck keys on the keyboard

It may be a bug, but it obviously does not affect everyone. It does not happen on my older Intel iMac. And there is a +Early 2009+ Mac mini in the house, 2.0 GHz (same as and in Dah•veed's profile); it does not happen on it either.
When you did the test of setting volume low (or muted) with external speakers disconnected, and restarting with the external speakers disconnected, was the startup sound from the built-in speakers low (or muted), or was it already reset and loud. This will better determine when the volume reset takes place. If it's already loud, then it takes place during the previous logoff and actions that take place before restarting (or shutting down), or during the initial few seconds of startup (before the startup sound). If it's still low (or muted), then the sound volume reset takes place at some point after the startup sound, but before startup completes.
As another test, if you set the volume low, then log out and log back in (instead of restarting), does the volume stay low or does it get reset to the higher volume.
And as one more test, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Go to System Preferences Accounts pane and set it for +Automatic login+ (If you don't use automatic login normally, then you don't need to set it). Now try doing the same test, except from this account instead of your normal account. Is there any difference in the volume setting being retained?

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

  • Magic Trackpad Flashes "Low Battery" Upon Startup but is 100%

Since I got the Magic Trackpad, every time I start up my iMac, it flashes "Low Battery" on the screen for the Trackpad, even though it is 100% with new batteries when I go into System Preferences.
Spoke to Apple about it, and they had me trash two files and then re-start again. It still happened. Then they told me to go to an Apple Store and swap out the Magic Trackpad. I did this. The "Low Battery" indicator still flashes on the screen upon startup. Otherwise, the iMac works fine. Any ideas?

I finally figured out that my "Keyboard" batteries were low, and I replaced them, and now the "Low Battery" for the Trackpad no longer flashes on the screen. However, when I re-connected the Keyboard after putting in the new batteries, it showed a flash on the screen that the "Trackpad" was now connected. Why is my iMac mistaking my Trackpad for my Keyboard?

Hello, I am having trouble starting my 21" iMac running Snow Leopard after I had shared the HD with my MB-Pro. I had removed the "everyone - Read Only" rights on the HD (on the iMac) and opened sharing so my MB could attach to it. Grey Apple Logo and progress circle upon startup now.
Can changing these rights cause the system to not boot? I can go into single user mode but I am not sure what to do then. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
