Hi,
I'm struggling to download images from my Canon EOS 7D camera. The images appear corrupted on my hard drive. This does not happen consistently. Some images get corrupted, but could appear properly when trying a second time. The errors occur in EOS Utility or in iPhoto: same (bad) result. I tried to repeat downloading on a Windows machine (separate) and in a Ubuntu environment (Virtual Machine on my mac). In both cases, I had no problem. Canon states that the problem resides in my iMac. The dealer of my camera mentioned that if they see those problems, it usually relates to bad connections or a poor USB cable. I also tried several USB ports and cables, but could not resolve the problem that way. Any suggestions?

I've had this issue a few times and found it falls in to a few buckets, just a few things to consider if the images show up fine in the camera but not when you copy them out.
1) The format (version of RAW in my case I was using with Aperture
2) The reader
3) The drive
4) The connection
Format: when I first got the 7d I wanted to use the RAW.2 version. The .CR2 file format (Canon RAW version 2) is a digital photography RAW format created by Canon. "RAW" here means that this file stores information directly coming from the sensor, almost without processing. This file would show up corrupt every time i tried to open in in Aperture, or IPhoto on my Power-Mac
G5. I could only open it up in the supplied Canon software After some poking around I found out that I had to upgrade to Aperture3 to get the new supported RAW formats. Since I can't buy a new mack I changed the version of RAW I used.
Once I changed from using that RAW format it was fine. There are times Aperture will say that the file is corrupt but
when I restart the application it is fine I think there are some memory issues when it does this and I have to reboot the application over time.
The READER:I used to use a USB reader which was fine for the 10D but with the 7D and the 5D the files are much larger in RAW from 10 megs on the 10D to 25 megs or more on the 7D/5DMk2. After shooting 500 - 1000 shots in a night I'd have to download overnight in order to get everything. Some times the file would be corrupted coming over. If I pulled the file off later one by one or in smaller groups it would be fine. I have since upgraded to a Firwire 800 cards reader. Hours becomes 10 minutes for a 16Gig fill loaded card. not 8-10 hours.
The Drive: I've seen every files copy except 1, if I am able to hook up another drive and it works I run DiskWarrior, TechTool or SoftRAID. Usually thy confirm a bad sector in the drive. I'll back up the drive with time machine or a disk dupe software and then format the drive it it's part of a RAID I replace the drive entirely from the chain.
The connection: bad cables have also been a culprit but not often with firewire.

Did you move any system files? It's looking for the system folder. You can startup from the system CD by inserting the CD and restarting the computer and at the same time hold down the C key. The computer will boot from the CD. At that point run the disk utility and check your hard-drive. It the problem persists then do a fresh clean install of the system folder and that should help you get back on track.

CS2 New iMac i7 Snow Leopard Activation Problem

Im a newbie here, thanks for helping in advance. I have been using CS2 on a G5 PPC which just started to die. I ordered the new imac and it finally came in one piece and is working great, however it will not let me activate CS2. My G5 has a graphics card problem but you can still barely use it so I went to CS2 there and deactivated it, yet when I went to activate on the new machine the same problem.
It says error code 93-4 and although it has my serial #, there is no activation number. The guy on the phone said that he could not give me the code without the number??? I know that there are issues with the intel macs and CS2 but the menus etc look fine if I can just get it going. I plan on buying CS4 for home but already have 3 at work and was waiting till they fix all the bugs before I waste more money.
I am a professional and this is very bad for me, If you have any suggestions please help, I also sse that version cue doesnot work on intel macs is that part of the problem???

Here is the e-mail I got. I deleted the file only because i think it migfht disable my version. maybe it will help you communicate with adobe over this if not let me know how it turns out

Solution 1:
1. Copy and paste the attached file on your computer (preferedly in Desktop).
2. Locate the following on your computer:
/Library/Preferences/Adobe Systems/Product_Licenses_120/
(it is located in your hard drive)
3. After locating the said direction, please copy and paste the FF1 file in your computer at the appropriate license file location above to replace any existing file.
4. Software will be activated.
If software is still not activated please close the application and then relaunch it. If still not, do the 2nd solution below.
Solution 2:
Completely uninstall and reinstall the Suite and then re-activate. New FF1 files are generated during the installation process

so, now after following the linked instructions...
1. I'v installed ACR 8.4 and it's opening the RAW files from 70D, but in camera profile I have "matrix"
in case with 60D RAWs ther was portrait, landscape, etc...
2. The step wit installing the DNG converter I download the DNG converter 7.4, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3. - the reason is to add in the system camera profile that I want
every one of them do not install - just nothing happen after doubleclick (!?)
only one that install and run it's 7.1 which dont support 70D RAW files....
it's amazing how to put all this to work propertly
any ideas?

Canon 1DX support was added to ACR in version 6.7, 7.1. An updated CS6 should be at level ACR 8.6. If your ACR is not at level 8.6 try using CS6 menu Help>Updates. If that does not install ACR 8.6 try downloading the ACR and DNG 8.6 converter and see if ACR 8.6 will install into your CS6.

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

Photoshop Elements 9 and cannot open Raw files from my Canon EOS 1000D camera.

I am using Photoshop Elements 9 on a Windows 7 based PC and would like to know why I cannot open Raw files produced by my Canon EOS 1000D camera.
I have checked the version of the plug in as 6.5 for raw files which is supposed to open .cr2 files and should be compatible according to Adobe site info.
any ideas for next move.

According to all of Adobe's charts, the Canon 1000D should be supported by the basic PSE 9 even without updates. When you said you checked the camera raw version in PSE, did you do that by going to the Help menu and selecting About plugins -> Camera raw?
The Canon 1200D requires ACR 8.4 which is only compatible with PSE 12 - so for PSE 10 your brother would need the DNG converter.
I can't find a sample raw file to try (I do have PSE 9). If you want to upload a sample file to dropbox and give me access, I could try it on my system.
Have you tried opening one of your files on your brothers system?

You can't directly but can use DNG Converter to convert your files so ACR can read and process them.

IMac as an external display, problem with trackpad/mouse pairing

Hi,
I am trying to use the imac as an external display for a macbook air, which is well supported/advertised by apple.
I can toggle the display easily between the imac and the macookair, the problem I’m having is that I only have one wireless keyboard and one wireless trackpad. As I toggle the display, the paring/unpairing of both trackpad and mouse is a real hastle becuase I have to manually go into bluetooth preferences and adjust the settings for both devices.
Anyone using the imac as external display with an idea/suggestion how to make this process more friendly?

I don't think you can. Wish I had better news. Target display mode for non-thunderbolt 27" Imacs worked OK. I have done it myself on a late 2009 iMac. The new iMacs can only go into target display mode when connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt. So a new macbook or macbook air can do the trick but your dell can't. What you can do is remote desktop or VNC to the dell. Now your dell screen will show up but in a smaller window.

After 10.6.8. Quicktime movies on my website won't play. Others on iMac, ipad even PC no problem. There is no way to install other version as they are all earlier. Message says I may need to install additional download? What?
