IMac vs G5 PowerPC...?

Hi, I'm purchasing a new computer for my place of work, and want to make sure we get something that will have sufficient power. The main issue is a Flash website which is simply too cumbersome for the current machine to handle, so I've been working on it from home on a dual 2.7 gig PowerPC G5.. we're looking for the cheapest options, so I was browsing iMacs- how will a 2 gig Intel Core Duo iMac going to compare to my G5, for example?
I can't splurge on an intel G5, but if we get a cheaper machine that turns out to be slower than my home computer now, that will obviously be problematic. Any thoughts/advice are much appreciated!

The Intel Macs are not called G5 any more because that refers to the previous generation of PPC Macs. The towers are now called Mac Pros. Anyway the first thing to ask is what version of Flash will you be running because the only version of Flash that is coded to run natively on the Intel Macs is CS3. Any earlier version will take a performance hit. Next you want to consider how much RAM you have. You will want at least 2GB of RAM for the iMac and it's fairly cheap to max it out with 4GB if you purchase the RAM from a third party vendor. Though it's difficult to directly compare the Intel iMac to your dual 2.7GHz G5, the iMac should fair very well for Flash. I would recommend if you can find it in your budget to get the 2.4GHz and it should have no trouble handling the job.

Can I transfer docs/folders between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMAC with a PowerPC processor using a usb cord? Or by loading from the MacBook to a external drive and then to the Imac.

You need to use an external drive, FireWire cable, Ethernet cable, or wireless connection.

  • IMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 not connecting to internet

I have a iMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 running Tiger. We had it running to the internet fine in one location, connected to a switch to DSL. We moved it and wipe the computer. Now I am trying set it up to connect to the internet using the Internal Ethernet, but it will not connect. It will connect to all of the computers on the network but not the Internet. The dot in front of the Ethernet is yellow and says "Built-in Ethernet is currently active. Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and my not be able to connect to the Internet."
I can connect a Powerbook to the internet using the same line and works fine. Does any one have any suggestions?

    Dear Tonele,
*Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."*
Who is your DSL provider? I have Verizon and couldn't connect this morning because of a bad IP address. Luckily a Mac Tech support guy (800-567-6789) talked me through reconnecting my currently wonky iMac.
He literally had me take the ethernet cord out of both the modem and my 'puter. Then he had me plug it into a different socket on my modem. I then used the control panel to tell the computer that it was going to connect by dialup. I saved that setting, then told it to connect by ethernet and saved that.
Only then did little blue let me get rid of the bad IP address.
Hope that helps and All the best,
    Irene

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks
    Niall

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/belkin-firewire-800400-9-pin6-pin-ca ble-2-m66-ft
    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

Just got girlfriend a new iPad2. Her iMac is a PowerPC G5 (Tiger version 10.4.11) with 512 mb RAM. What's the simplest, most efficient way to get her iPad2 up and running and synced to her Mac?

Most of the Apple store sales people and some of the genius bar people are only knowledgable on Apple's more recent offerings. They are not very knowledgable, I found, on older PowerPC based Apple computers, I'm afraid.
    Here's the real scoop.
Your girlfriend's G5 can only install up to OS X 10.5 Leopard. This is the last compatible OS X version for PowerPC users.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and OS X10.7 Lion are for newer Intel CPU Apple computers.
Early iMac G5's can only have up to 2 GBs of RAM.
Later iMac G5's (2005-2006) could take up to 2.5 GBs of RAM
2 GBs of RAM will run OS X 10.5 Leopard just fine.
The very latest iTunes (10.5.2) can be installed and runs on both PowerPC and Intel CPU Macs.
However, there are certain new iTunes feature that won't work without an Intel Mac.
One of iOS and iTunes feature is sync'g wirelessly over WiFi.
This will not work unless you have an iDevice running iOS 5 and Intel Mac running 10.6 Snow Leopard or better.
Although, I was disappointed I would not be able to do this with my G4 Mac, it's not a biggie problem for me.
So, your girlfriend's computer should be fine for what she intends to use it for.
The Apple people either just plain didn't know or we're trying to get you to think about buying a new Mac.
At least, as of now, not truly necessary.
If Apple, at some later point, drops support for PowerPC users running 10.5, then would be the time to consider a new or "newer" Intel CPU Mac.
My planned Mac computer upgrade is seeking out a " newer" last version G5 for my "new" Mac.
I can't afford, right now, to replace all of my core PowerPC software with Intel versions, so I need to stick with the older PowerPC Macs for the time being. The last of the G5's is what I seek.

  • Disconnecting the screen from an iMac G5 20" PowerPC

    Hi All,
I have an old PowerPC iMac G5 (2002-3 I believe) and the display/video card has just given up. I am getting all the lines on the screen and thus, the screen is not usable. So, I have decided to turn it into a media server sitting in the spare room.
PROBLEM: As I have read on many discussion boards, you can't turn the display off for the computer. And as it is 'broken', I would like to disconnect it all together so it uses up less power (every little bit counts to save the environment). I can connect it via VGA to my TV so will be able to see what I would have otherwise seen on the screen. I opened the unit up but had no idea where to start (have opened up many PCs, but never a mac). Do people have suggestions on what I can do to utilise the unit best as a media server?
    Appreciate all suggestions.

There are two iMac G5 designed. The earlier models could be opened easily from the back and various parts accessed. Apple even provides instructions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2278
The last iMac G5 models (the ones with iSight camera), were not user accessible, except for RAM upgrades.
Which type do you have? Also, which screen size?
If it's the earlier design, if you look at the instructions from the above link for replacing the inverter and disconnect the inverter, that should power off the backlight. The backlight is likely to be the major power draw for the display. I have not done this myself, so I'm not sure if the iMac will pass the startup test if the inverter is disconnected. I don't know how to internally disconnect the LCD itself.

  • Does apple replace capacitors on IMac G5's PowerPC

My iMac G5 PowerPC's screen pixelates and then freezes.  I read that it could be capacitors that need to be replaced.  Does Apple still work on the old G5's or should I take it someplace else?

You may have a problem with the video chip.
    Here is how to tell...
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Bootup will be longer.
Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.
An article on how to boot into safe mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    Runs OK in safe mode...
Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers.  Which results in your machine not using advanced video hardware. As luck would have it, you can run the safe mode video drivers in normal mode.
    Here is how:

Look through the above thread.  See the second page.  You don't have to read through the first page.  Just go to the part where I try a solution that works.
Using the safe mode video driver results in these limitiations:

  • IMac 500 mhz powerpc G3 - Internet connection slow, how do I fix?

So here it goes, I am pretty much a clueless newbie as far as the computer goes. But I have this much worked out. I am running a iMac G3 500 mhz powerPC (Thanks!, about this mac) with 512 kb of L2 cache, 100 mhz bus speed and 128 MB SDRAM on OS 10.3.9, and I have a wireless card installed that has firmware version 9.52, which I am using to connect to the internet through an apple airport, connected to a Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable modem.
Now when I am on the iMac the internet feels like dial up, I can literally stop to read magazine articles while I wait for the internet to load pages. But on the other computer a g4 apple powerbook (silver), it is quick and snappy. Both of these computers use the same airport and modem to connect.
What Can I do to the iMac to bring the speed up?

Tom's right. a G3 is a G3... but bump that RAM up even to 384 would be better. You "could" go up to 1GB, but it's up to you to decide the cost effectiveness of that. At OWC to could get 2x256 for about about $50 or 2x512 for for about $140... so the difference is pretty big. But I know the pricing is pretty competitve and you might find the 512's cheaper.
    Good luck!

  • Unable to install OS 10.3 on my tray loaded Imac 233 MHz Powerpc 750.

    03Jan07
I am not able to install OS 10.3 on to my 10 GB hard drive. I get this message:
"You can not install Mac OS X on the volume. This destination is not within the first 8 GB of the hard disk".
I have reformated the drive several times and install Imac Firmware Update 1.2 . I continue to get the message.
What is the process to install Mac 10.3 onto a Tray Loaded 233 MHz Powerpc750 Imac? I got the computer with 10.3 already installed, so I know it is possible.
Thank you for your help with this matter.

    04Jan07
    Strider:
Thank you for the partioning advice.
I actually traded that computer with 10.3 installed for another model, a G3 tower that could not handle 10.2. Somehow the Imac had 10.3 without spliting the drive, so I assumed the drive did not need spliting.
The wireless antenna I bought for my Dad will not work for any version prior than 10.2, so I had to find a way to install the newer operating system. I hope the 256M RAM I just installed will be enought to do the job.
Thank you for your help with this. Do you know how the install 10.3 without spliting up the drive?

  • I'm working on my iMac PowerMac8,2 PowerPC G5 (3.1) 2 GHz machine and have been having problems with the computer shutting down unpredictably. After the problem becoming impossible to work with, I shut the machine down. Now a little better, but reoccuring

I'm working with my iMac PPC G5, PowerMac8,2, 2 GHz machine running OS X 10.4.11, and was having a problem for a while with the machine shutting down unexpectedly. There was no clear pattern to when it was shutting down as far as I could tell. For a while, it would also not restart when buttoned on.
I set the machine aside for a while, probably a month or more, and then got it back out after its rustication. It started up and runs significantly better than it had been, but I have noticed it shutting down sometimes now again, though not as frequently as before. Sometimes it runs for a good long time between active work, sleep mode, and active work again. Once in a while it does shut down when no one is working on it (while asleep). But now it always restarts when buttoned on.
I've done the thorough vacuuming of any dust from the unit vents. I wonder if there's anything else I should try. In most other ways the machine works pretty well and has become the family desktop for basic uses, so I'd like to keep it running if I can. A little frustrating to not be able to upgrade all programs (iTunes) to useable versions, but that's another story....
I would appreciate any ideas about the shut down problem.
    TCC

    Option 1
Reset your PRAM.  Press and hold down the Command Option P R keys while starting your computer.  You will hear the startup chime.  continue holding down those keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.  Release the keys.  If the computer restarts, you will need to reset your Date and Time.  It might be time to replace your PRAM battery.  The G5 iMacs require a 3 volt CR2032 lithium watch/camera battery like below:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CR2032/
You can find these batteries at Walmart, Kmart, Target, most local drugstore chains, for between $3-$5, or at Radio Shack for $12-$20.
If you have any G5 iMac model EXCEPT the iSight version, you can probably do the battery install yourself.  Watch this video on upgrading your iMac's RAM to show you how to remove the back of your iMac, if you don't already know how:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_g5_mem_m/
While you have the back off, use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out the vents at the bottom of the iMac, the fans, and anywhere else you can.  Also inspect the 28-30 capacitors on the logic board.  Look for dark spots, if they look puffy or swollen, or leaks.
    Option 2
Reset the SMC by removing all cables (USB, Firewire, Ethernet, Modem, Power cord) from the back of your computer.  Let it sit for one minute.  Press and hold the power on button on the back of the iMac while plugging in the power cord.  Release the power on button.  Count to five, the press the power on button again.
    Option 3
Place your original, came with the iMac when purchased install disk, into the slot on the iMac, press and hold the C key while pressing the power on button on the back of the computer.  (If you have upgraded your OS from when you purchased your iMac, example your iMac came with OS 10.3 installed, and you're now using OS 10.5, then use the OS 10.5 Retail Install disk that you had used to upgrade your OS instead of the original, came with the iMac disk.)
Continue holding the C key until you see the OS starting to load.  DO NOT do an OS installation.  At the top Menu bar, select Utilities or Utility, and pull down to Disk Utility.  On the left side of the window that opens, select your normal OS drive.  Click First Aid at the top middle of the window if it isn't already selected.  Click Repair Disk from the lower right area of the window.  When that is done, click Repair Permissions to the left of the Repair Disk button you clicked earlier.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility.  From the top Menu bar (I think its under Utilities) select the Start Up Manager, and choose your normal boot volume as the startup disk.  Restart the computer.  If successful, and you've rebooted from your normal startup disk, eject the install DVD/CD, and you're good to go.
    Good luck.

  • Can't open F-Fox 4 in my iMac G5 w/PowerPC CPU; icon says "not supported on this system"

I have a somewhat old iMac G5 with what I believe is a Power PC CPU. I have used Firefox as long as I've had this. I just downloaded the new Firefox 4, and it shows a classic "NO" symbol (slashed circle) over the new Firefox 4 icon. When I click on the icon I get: "You cannot open the application "Firefox" because it is not supported on this system."
Must I go into mourning? Has CPU old age finally caught up with me? I LOVE Firefox; I hate Microsoft. Must I abandon my true love?

There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
The latest official version that works on OS X 10.4 and PPC Macs is Firefox 3.6.16 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • Connecting my intel iMac to my powerPC iMac - how???

    help!!
I have an intel and a power PC iMac - have connected them with a firewire cable but how do I make them see each other. Sorry this is probably simple but I can't seem to see how to do this :-((
    thanks

You don't state what are you trying to achieve so it's a little tough to determine your goal. If you want to migrate the information on the Power PC iMac to the Intel iMac use Migration Assistant. You can locate it by using Spotlight and typing in Migration Assistant.

  • How can I update iMac PowerMac4.2 PowerPC G4 Firmware and Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3.9

Trying to save this old iMac

    Greetings:
    This link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL496
will get you the 10.3.9 combo updater that will update any versions of 10.3 to 10.3.9 assuming you already have some version of 10.3 installed.
Apple has dropped a lot older reference material for its older computers from its site (Grrr!). However, the MacTracker database doesn't show that any firmware updates were issued for the G4 iMacs.
As for as upgrading hardware, there is not a lot you can due yourself because the design of the G4 discourages end-users from opening it up. You can get it open but, without proper reassembly expertise, the computer will overheat and die.
RAM upgrades are affected by this design. The G4 iMac has two RAM slots but only one is accessible to the average user. That makes it hard to max out the RAM. That model can hold up to one 512MB module in each slot for a total of 1GB RAM. Most people has to satisfy themselves with putting a 512MB module i the "user accessible" slot and simply live with what was in the "factory" slot, often a 256MB module.
Upgrading the hard drive faces the same take-apart limitations as accessing the internal RAM slot. Not a typical DIY event.
