IMac vs G5 tower -- how loud can it get?

Hi,
I bought my G5 tower because I wanted the fastest Mac out there. I did not stop to consider the noise factor, and bought one never having had a chance to hear what they sounded like in a quiet environment. While I love the speed and looks of my tower, its 9 fans leave a lot to be desired. Many things cause my fans to rev up, sometimes requiring a reboot to quiet down. Many times I refrain from even moderate use of my G5 at night because the fans really do get loud. I can hear them behind a closed door and down the hall.
I do not know how many fans iMac G5's have, but I would like to know how peoples' experiences have been with them, and if, at their loudest, they are quieter than my G5. I miss my 2001 G4 tower a lot. It was not whisper quiet, but the volume never changed. It was tolerable.
Due to physical limitations, my tower must be on my desk so I can reach the power button, and cannot be placed in an even slightly quieter location, such as under my desk. I wish Apple hadn't taken away keyboard power.
I am strongly considering the iMac as my primary computer, if it is accoustically superior.

William, I have both a G5 tower dual 2 ghz and a current 17inch iMac. Yes the iMac is very quiet, even silent as compared to the tower, however my tower isn't so noisy that I can hear it as you do. My PM is off my bedroom and I sometimes leave it running over night while it downloads torrents. The fan is audible but only just, and my wife has never complained. This is in total contrast to my 1st generation G5 iMac which was awfull (noise wise). I'd say that there is something wrong with your PM if it is noisy as you state. My only qualm with my PM are those blasted crickets inside her. I have to disable NAP to quiet her down as i always have it set to highest in power mode.

It is the same in the latest version 7.0.2. You can shut off the saving and auto filling of passwords by clicking in the menu bar at the top Safari > Preferences and then select Autofill and uncheck the passwords box. Also check the next pane as well.

Things i had to set manually;
1) Keyboard layout, because it defaults to US
2) Two mouse keys don't work had to manually set, Emulate3Buttons defaults on (wanted it off)
3) "VideoOverlay" is off by default (or is not auto detected)
3) needed to set DPI to 96
4) needed to set color to 24 (defaulted to 8?)
apart from that, the auto detection is vastly improving IMO.
The main premise behind this, is to debate the auto detection capabilities of hardware by xorg.

Man, all I run is dwm, but i'm still so afraid to edit anything here. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can prune this baby?
By the way this is a laptop with an ATI card.

I try to get as many items as I can in the bookmarks menu toolbar (typically using 3 letter names). F4 adds an icon next to each name - taking up valuable space. How, please, can I get rid of the icons in the bookmarks toolbar so I have space for more bookmark names? Thank you.

If you remove the names then you may have a problem with organizing or searching for bookmarks.<br />
If you do not want to use the extension then you can achieve the same effect with code in userChrome.css<br />
That is what I would do.
Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line.

edit the hosts file on your computer and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Disable your antivirus and firewall.

Back up all data, then boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.

Brand new 20" iMac won't recognize Ethernet cable - can't get online

I just got my iMac and cannot get the ethernet cable to recgonize. I know it works b/c I'm using it this very moment to type this on my Powerbook. When I plug it into the PB, I get the yellow,then the green once it connects. However, when I plug it into the iMac, I get nothing. I thought maybe I needed to configure Built-In Ethernet, but it won't let me select configure or connect. The assistant won't recognize it either. I posted in the Tiger forum mistakenly, but thought this forum would be more appropriate. This is what I posted (for more detail):
I just unboxed my new iMac and can't get on the internet (I'm on my powerbook). The problem is this; in Network, it says "The cable for Built-In Ethernet is not plugged in." Only, it is. Can't be the cable b/c that's the cable I'm connected with right now. So, I go through "assist me" and when I click on "Assistant" it takes me to the Intro page where I'm supposed to give a Location Name. I do this, calling it "home." The ver next screen, after clicking "continue" takes me to "How do you connect to the internet?" The problem here is that, of the 5 options, only one is selectable. Airport is the only one that can be selected?? "I use a telephone modem to dial my ISP" as well as "DSL Modem/Cable/Lan" are all greyed out..they cannot be selected. I use an ethernet cable. Why is this not able to be selected? It's very frustrating. I've turned off Airport and Bluetooth, yet I still cannot check any of these. I need to check "I use a cable modem to dial my ISP" but I can't b/c it won't allow me. Can anyone help me here? I can't use my brand new iMac and it's kind of a bummer. I thought these things were plug and play? Thank

Well I tried that and nothing. I'm completely stumped. I have no idea why this is happening. And it's weird b/c, everytime I'm jumping back on here, I'm just unhooking the ethernet cable from the iMac and plugging it into my PB. And, nearly immediately, i'm up and running, connected with the PB. How can it work on the PB and not on the iMac? And why would those options be grayed out on the iMac? It's like it just refuses to let me check them and/or configure. That is very weird.

Hello, I have a question on "quest".????? I have someone getting into my computer. I have shut of the quest... and yet yesterday all of my files were stolen. My phone book, someone goes in and changes my phone number, and just changes so many things around. It really has me upset. Please... tell me how I can keep "guest" out for good. I bought this computer for me. Not guest, yet all I see here on the apple ways is how others can hook in, or get in to our computers.

Data rate DOES make a difference, but I'd say your real problem has more to do with the fact that you're working on a Powerbook. Motion's real time capabilities derive from the capability of the video card. Not the processor. Some cards do better than others, but laptops are not even recommended for running Motion.
To improve your workflow on a laptop will be limited, but there are a few things that you can try.
Make sure that thumbnails and previews are turned off.
Make sure that you are operating in Draft Mode.
Lower the display resolution to half, or quarter.
Don't expect to be getting real time playback. Treat it more like After Effects.
Compressing your clips into smaller Animations does help because it lowers the data rate, but you're still dealing with the animation codec which is a high data rate codec. Unfortunately, it sounds necessary in your case because you're dealing with alpha channels.
The data rate comes into play with your setup trying to play through your USB drive. USB drives are never recommended for editing or Motion work. Their throughput is not consistent enough for video work. a small FW drive would be better, though your real problem as I said is the Powerbook.
If you must work on the powerbook, then don't expect real-time playback. Instead, build your animation, step through it, and do RAM previews to view sections in real time.

1. There are academic discounts directly from Apple - though I do not know how it will work outside of the US. Google Apple Education and go to the education portion of the apple website.
2&3. You can not purchase any of the applications independently from the whole Studio package or get a reduced price because you will not use one or two of them.
Final Cut Express has a great deal of the functionality of Final Cut Pro but it will work only with DV and HDV video. It does not work with non-standard image sizes/codecs.

You can't; there's no Thunderbolt port on a Mac Pro. If you just bought the display, try to swap it for the standard 27" LED display with the mini display port connector (that assumes your Mac Pro is a 3,1 or later, which has a mini display port).

I went to Firefox extentions to remove facesmooch, but there isn't any extensions listed, how else can i get rid of it?

Sounds like some form of ad-aware.
Boot up your pc in safe mode w/ networking, open FF and type "about:plugins" in the url address bar. Take note of anything that looks like it may be associated w/ "Facemooch". Close FF and do a search for any malicious looking files listed under the plugin section and append "bak" to the extension. You may need to open task manager prior to doing this to ensure the file isn't running, if "rundll32.exe or a malicious looking file, a simple search should be able to determine this, end the task prior to changing the extension (ie. somefile.dll.bak) <- this can be changed in the search wizard.
Fire up msconfig while your still in Safe Mode, and uncheck any startup programs that are of unknown origin. (this does not delete anything, but just keeps it from booting at startup) msconfig should be available from the run command, just type in "msconfig" and enter.
norton also has a freeware program called "autorun", very useful in stopping malicious files in their tracks.
Most file validity can usually be determined by the directory they are lying in, for example, most viruses or malicious programs tend to load themselves into the c://windows/system32 directory or root directory (synonym).
