If I understand you you have a 2011 macbook pro (with thunderbolt).  You want to get a new iMac (also thunderbolt) and use it as a display for your macbook pro.  If that is correct you can do it.  You connect the iMac to the macbook pro with a thunderbolt cable.  Put the iMac in target display mode, and you are good to go.

It depends on what type(s) of video input you have on your TV. If you've an open HDMI port on your TV, you can use a Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort) to HDMI adapter and it will carry the sound also. See -> here.

  • IMac with 24" Cinema Display

Yesterday I went to the Apple Store and asked about buying a new 27" iMac and connecting it to my 24" Cinema Display. I was told that I could do that with an adapter and was sold a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.
When I got home I realized that wasn't the correct adapter. I called the store and was told that it wasn't possible to connect the iMac to that particular monitor. (As an aside, I was really ****** because that was the whole reason for making this purchase!)
Then I realized that the video plug fit in the iMac video port. I plugged it in and it seems to be working just fine. I just don't have the power and USB plugs from the monitor cable plugged in.
So, am I okay doing this? Am I hurting anything? Was the genius at the Apple store wrong when I was told I couldn't connect the iMac and the Cinema display? The reason for my concern, several years ago I plugged an external display into an older iMac and it caused video problems requiring the replacement of the monitor.
I can't seem to easily find anything in the forums, so any response/reassurance would be much appreciated!!

OK, you confused me talking about the m-DP to DVI adapter. The Apple Store should refund your money for that bad recommendation. I think whomever sold it to you made the same mistake that I did. They thought that you had the model Cinema Display prior to the one that your have.
So you have the 24" Cinema Display that was available from 2008 until just this past summer. It has one cable that ends in three connectors; mag-safe, USB and m-DP. Well the mag-safe connector was to power a MacBook so that one is fine not plugged in. The USB connector is for connecting the USB ports on the back of the display to your Mac, so there should be no issues plugging that in because it will give you an extra self-power hub if you need more USB ports at some point. And of course the m-DP is allowing the Mac to drive the display.
I think that you should still be OK. Your iMac has a better GPU than the minimum requirement for your display.

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:

Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

Sometimes this message means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes it happens because a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
A third-party wireless router that has incompatible settings or firmware may be the cause. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • 3 Monitors with 1 iMac and 2 Cinema Displays conected to Windows Gaming PC Help!

    Hi
I want to set up a 3 monitor gaming set up with 1 iMac in the middle and 2 cinema displays either side. This would be a tripple monitor set up.
I am looking to set up a new computer and i want to have 3 monitors. I also want to have an iMac so i want the iMac in the middle and two cinima displays next to each other. i Want to also conect these monitors with a Windows 7 gaming PC.
I want to hook up my very powerfull windows 7 gaming computer wich has 3 SLI GTX 560 EVGA cards. These cards have a display port output.
So i want to run 3 monitors from my gaming machine and i also want to have my iMac use the 3 monitors aswell. I also want to take advantage of the full, maximum resolution. I would get the thunderbolt cinema display monitors.
Gaming comupter has 3 display ports so i need to connect each graphics card to one of the monitors. I then need to conect the two cinema displays to the middle iMac.
I have not bought anything yet i just need to know if i can do this. Need to know stuff like what adapers to buy and what compatabilties.
I need to know if this is posible and how i would do it.
    Thanks

Could i use some of these cables?
It says they are thunderbolt conpatable.

  • Imac 9.1   Cinema Display 16:10 - not working?

Hey I am despratly trying to get a second Monitor to work on my Imac. This is what I have done so far:
I used a MiniDisplay Port to DVI and a MiniDisplay Port to dual Link Dvi both are working with a different 4:3 Monitor.
I get a dstorted Picture on my Cinema Display.
After that I borrowed a Usb to DVI Adapter from Displaylink there I sometimes get a picture, most times nothing.
My Cinema Display is damaged you say? No it is working perfectly fine with a Win-Pc.
Any Ideas or experience with an 9.1 Imac and a 16:10 (24") Cinema Display?
    Thx

If the resolution of this external monitor is greater than 1920 x 1200 you need a dual link DVI adapter.  If the computer sees the monitor then there will be an Arrangement tab in the Displays system preferences.  Otherwise something is physically wrong.
In the Displays system preferences click Detect Displays.  Maybe Gather Windows too if you currently cannot see an image on the external.  Check the resolution of the external in that monitor's Displays preferences.  If there is a refresh rate, check that too.
    Don't run in mirrored mode.

  • Connecting IMac to home cinema amp

Hi everyone, basically im looking to connect my IMac to my home cinema amp so that i can listen to audio through decent speakers. It'd be great if you guys could suggest the best way of doing this? Im guessing an optical digital cable would be best but i cant see an optical port on the IMac? i have seen speaker cables that hook into the headphone jack but im not sure if this will diminish the audio quality?
    Thanks
    Bunts

The headphone jack on your iMac also supports optical out (DD 5.1), you simply have to get the cable with optical connection for your amp the other end to connect to your iMac. Another suggestion based on where your home cinenma is in relationship to your iMac is to do a wirelss connection using an Airport Express. The Airport Express has a connection (the same as your iMac) that allows you to stream your music from your iMac to your home cinema.
I have my system set up as the latter because I have (what I consider) a nice home theater system, the amp/speaker section is much much much better than my iMac however I don't want wires all over the place.

  • Blu Ray on iMAC for home cinema ?

Has anyone been able to get Blu ray to work on their mac?
I use Plex on my intel mac as a data source for my home cinema set up which works really well after I have ripped my DVD's to hard drive. I notice that Plex can also play .MKV high def files very well.
I currently play blu ray discs through my kids PS3 which is in the other room but I really want to play them from the hard drive on my mac through Plex onto my big screen.
So my question is - is it possible to get an external blu ray disk reader to connect to my imac ? and if so which one ?
Also, what is good software - eg - handbrake/mac the ripper etc to convert the blu rays so I can store them on my hard drive?
I read somewhere about Macs not being able to handle bluray as PC's do ? I also have linux ubuntu but no windows PC's and I really don't want to turn to the dark side (Windows's) for this one.
    Any ideas much appreciated ?
Please don't waste your time telling my to move my PS3 and other such solutions... and yes I do own the disks.......
    thanks in advance.
    Richard

Apple computers cannot play Blu-Ray disks natively due to the format not being supported by the hardware or OS X software..
    Hope this helps

  • 27" iMac + 21" iMac as Secondary Display or Other IPS Panel?

    Hello,
I've been on the hunt for a replacement setup to my 24" Intel iMac + 20" Cinema Display for quite some time, and after some trail and error, believe I have the best of both worlds.  From a workflow perspective, I prefer to focus on a single display centered in my light of sight, with the secondary display to my left (head turn is acceptable for me) and plays host to Internet browser windows, IM chats, and other overflow type stuff that I'd prefer not to minimize and/or close when working.
My challenge has been pairing the 27" iMac with a comparable IPS display at a relatively similar DPI with a glossy finish.  Other than the 21.5" iMac, there doesn't seem to be another display out there with these properties.  A second 27" Cinema Display is not only overkill for my needs, but at nearly the cost of the smaller 21.5" iMac doesn't net me any gains beyond screen real estate. Since the advent of display input capabilities that are identical to the previous generation 27" iMac, the extra few hundred bucks nets me the display I want with a bonus computer behind the bezel!
Question 1:  On paper this appears to be totally feasible, but has anyone tried this configuration and can comment on how they are making out?
Question 2:  Has anyone found a 21.5" or similar display size with the properties that match the 27" Cinema Display (glossy finish, IPS, and similar DPI)?
As a side bonus, my wife and kids would get full rights to run rampant on the 21.5" without compromising my 27" iMac environment, so as a side benefit this may be the winning combo, but I thought I'd ask to be sure.
    Thanks in advance!

You can easiliy connect an external display to your imac. All you need is the correct adapter. In your case you would need a mini-display port to VGA or if the external display has HDMI or VGA, mini-display port to either of those connections.  Your 2011 21.5" display can support up to 1 external display and you can buy the adapters at Apple's on-line store.
