IMac vs Linksys WRT300N

I am new to Mac and am thinking of purchasing an iMac 24", and am wondering if the iMac wireless function will work OK with the Linksys WRT300N.
Thank you.

Linksys does not support Apple,
Well, yes and no. They don't know diddly about macs, but I have occasionally gotten decent help from them. It's usually easiest if you just tell them you're using windows (and that the auto setup software didn't work), log into the router with safari or whatever browser you use, and just wait out all the "…now launch internet explorer" garbage till they get to the nitty gritty. They do have OS X articles in their support kbase, although they aren't a lot of help.

Hello, can you tell me if I can use a linksys wrt300n wireless router with a macbookpro & G4 Imac ?
    thanks

    Hi Danielh,
I sure hope that I can help you. Sorry for the somewhat slow response time, I have been playing XBOX all afternoon.
First off, I would totally disagree with the Office Depot guy. The thing is "n" isn't actually a "real" thing yet, it has yet to be approved by the WiFi alliance who oversees everything wireless. Right now "g" is still the standard, which is what is built into the AirPort Etreme cards in all current Apple computers.
On the topic of why you would want a "faster than 6MBps connection" from the router, it is because of how the router transmitts "stuff." While yes, Comcast has a top speed tier of 6MBps for standard service, the faster your connection to the router the faster files will transfer, and generally the better the connection you have. Lets say you have a 11MBps connection with a router, and you use your comcast. You will not get the full 450-600KBps download speed that you would get while directly connected to the router. With a router such as the WRT54G/GS, your connection speed will generally be 54MBps, which will achieve download speeds on the internet much closer to the wired speed of 450-600KBps. And now with Comcats new PowerBoost, us comcast people can now get speeds of up to 12MBps with our standard 6MBps service. So the faster the router, the faster the internet will go, although downloads will never go over the standard 6MBps (with bursts up to 12MBps.)
If you frequently move/transfer files from computer to computer, than the faster your wireless connection the faster your files will transfer. So in fact, 108MBps is NOT overkill, although no current Apple computer will support 802.11n at this time.
I actually have the WRT54GS, but have worked with many WRT54G's for customers. Both are very good routers and some of the cheapest, although the WRT54GS is more around mid-range price. Some people do have problems with the WRT54G but many times this is because they have not set it up properly, or updated the firmware, or in worst case they could have a "dud" router which happens quite a lot in the world of WiFi. But overall I have been EXTREMELY happy with the WRT54GS, and most Linksys routers that I have worked with. (As a side note I HATE D-LINK ROUTERS!)
While I do not use my iBook, or my Dell laptop, with a WRT54G router much, the times that I have I can't really tell a difference in speeds between the WRT54G and my WRT54GS. So I would save your money and just get the WRT54G. Yes any Linksys router, other than the Compact series routers, will work just fine in your apartment. Linksys are somewhat superior to other routers such as D-Links, and Netgears because of the second antenna that most all of them sport, such as the WRT54G.
I really hope that this helps!

  • Can I use a Linksys WRT300N as a range extender?

Currently I have a Linksys WRT300N V1 that I am not using.  I do not get wireless coverage in my kitchen and back yard.  I want to use the WRT300N as an extended.  Is this possible?
Currnetly I have a netgear WRT600 connected to my modem (verizon fios).  I would like to use the WRT300N as a repeater/extender if possible.
    Thanks
    Brian

Linksys routers doesn't support repeater mode, If you want you can use WRT300N as an Access Point by connecting it hard wired to the first router.

  • Linksys WRT300N Connectivity with Proper Settings

I am a computer tech and have worked with Linksys products for years. Over the last year or so, I have had so much trouble, I cannot explain it. I have a client who purchased a Linksys WRT300N that I initially setup a few months ago. It is connected with cable modem from Linksys. Hardwired, the speeds are just fine. I have the most recent firmware and setup lower threshhold levels and such to gain better wireless signal, performance. The only computer I am having trouble with is one using the WUSB300 adapter. The computer is XP SP3 and using the most recent driver. I even installed the Linksys utility and tested it, to no avail. This desktop is right around the corner from this router, it works well with a Mac, but it will not be read by the desktop WUSB300. I did release/renew, uninstalled/reinstalled, checked everything and the adapter will not get a good signal plus it doesn't get assigned an IP and continues with the 169.xx.... I rebooted the modem then router, and then rebooted computer. The initial connection worked then gone. It never held and this is around the corner. For the Mac, I did a speedtest.net and with a strong signal, and Wireless N only, I received less than DSL lite speeds but hardwired, I achieved up to 15000kbps. I cannot explain what is happening. The router has the most recent firmware, there is no interference since transmitting N only, and I did the proper settings that previous posts commented on, to get better signal strength. What am I not seeing? Why would the speeds be so slow, from doing at least 6 tests over an hour? Also, why would I not get an ip address from one N router to another N device, by the same manufacturer? Sorry for the frustration here, but I recommended this equipment a year ago and Linksys has been very disappointing in its results. These N products are unreliable. Some work and most don't...I am learning. j

I have a one year old Macbook and I assume a first generation built in N wireless card. If, in fact, it is a Draft 1 adapter, does that mean I should use the 20Hz band instead of the wide 40Hz? Thank you for the advice. SMR1

  • Extending a Linksys WRT300n v1.1 network with Airport Extreme

I have a linksys wrt300n v1.1 as a wireless access point to our network. It does not have DHCP enabled, as we have another router performing that function.
I want to extend the range of our wireless network into the building next to us (part of our office complex). The signal from the linksys is strong at one end of the building, but doesn't reach through the rest.
I bought an airport extreme, and am trying to configure it to extend the wireless. It is currently connected to the linksys via wireless, but that connection doesn't seem to be stable, and even when it does connect the airport utility shows the error message: "unable to extend the wireless network."
I cannot see any settings in the linksys config pages relating directly to WDS; current AP Isolation is disabled (which I'm certain is correct) and NAT is disabled (I'm not sure if this is correct or not).
OK - partial resolution; I've switched the Linksys from WPA/WPA2 to WEP encryption. I seem to be able to connect the AE wirelessly, but it still says that it can't extend the network.

Thanks. I've kind of gathered as much from the reading I've been doing.
I broke down and dropped another $200 for a second extreme. I've got to say, it works beautifully, and is a dream to configure. The down-side is that the Apple "Genius" told me it would work the first way, "no problem."
I hate it when people who are supposed to know guess rather than actually find out.

  • Getting 54.0 Mbps maximum on Linksys WRT300N

    Hi,
I have a Linksys WRT300N router. I am getting only 54.0 Mbps speed but I wants 300 Mbps.
Network mode is “Mixed” in basic wireless settings.
When I select wireless-N then I get disconnect.
Is there any settings for my wireless LAN card or some thing else.
Please anybody guide me what to do.
    I have Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter WMP300N.
    Regards

Your wireless n equipment should be capable of connecting at 200 to 300 Mbps.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router.  (That would certainly explain a 54 Mbps connection!)   Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
In the router, make sure the "Radio Band" is set to "Wide".
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.   For wireless n, make sure your standard and wide bands are at least 2 channels apart. For example try standard band on channel 11, and wide band channel 9.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Xbox 360 live lagged and disconnect often with Linksys WRT300N router

I live in a two story townhouse with the modem and wireless router (Linksys WRT300N) located in the upper floor and the Xbox 360 system with wireless adapter in the bottom floor.  Our laptop works fine with good connection but the Xbox live gameplay lagged big time and disconnect often.  What are we doing wrong?

Configure the X-BOX using static IP....subnet mask ....gateway & DNS numbers as in the range of router ....
Also use the wireless settings same as in router
    Forward the ports 88 & 3074 .... .on router .....
See above settings make any difference

  • Linksys wrt300N working perfectly until I changed my broadband line

Please help.  My Linksys wrt300N was working perfectly but.. the analogue line that receives my broadband was switched & now I cant get broadband to go through the router.  The linksys router feeds off a BT router & then a netgear hub.  my laptop says that it is connecting well with the router but can not pick up the internet.  The cable that plugs into the back of the linksys is sending broadband fine as if I hardwire my laptop in to it (therefore bypassing the linksys router all together) I have no problems connecting at all.  I have tried restarting all the hubs in tern & still have no success.   Any suggestions (I only bought the router recently but most helpfully cant find the start up disk or any related paperwork!).

Turn off the WRT300N. Unplug your modem, wait at least 10 sec then plug it back. Wait until initialization is over (flashing lights stabilize) then turn on your WRT300N.

  • Brand New iMac and Linksys WAG54G v2 - WEP but not WPA

    Hi All
    I have a brand new iMac and a Linksys WAG54G v2 wireless network hub;
I have set up the network with no encryption and everything works
I have set up the network with WEP encryption and everything works
I have set up the network with WPA encryption and everything works (PCs and printers) except my new iMac.
Occasionally it works (1 in 50) but mostly it fails with the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network "<name of SSID>".
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/fix this?
    Thanks

I'm guessing my failures might be due to one of two problems; inability to find the router or connection timeouts; does anyone know how to monitor/snoop this connection and/or fix this problem?
    Thanks

  • Want to use linksys wrt300n as a ethernet bridge while the router is a time capsule.

The time capsule is connect to my modem and my wrt300 is downstairs. What I want to do I use my time capsule a my router and the wrt300 as my ethernet bridge. How do I set my wrt recieve the single from my time capsule. The wrt300. Is running dd-wrt firmware. The reason I want to do this is that I have a slingbox and it needs to be connected by Ethernet. By using the wrt as a Ethernet bridge it should work. I just need to know how.

All sounds good.. tend to use the older dd-wrt firmware to do this.. 2.4 linux kernel is far more successful than later 2.6 versions of dd-wrt.
You must manually setup wireless.. plainly only 2.4ghz is going to work.
So jump into the airport utility manual setup.. and go to the wireless page.
Depending on how old your TC is, setup a wireless name.. no spaces no special characters.. very short also is just as useful as very long. tc24 will do nicely.. Change the name of the 5ghz if it is later model to something also similarly simple.. tc5 might be nice. Call the TC a nice name again no spaces.. which it will have by default.. no special characters pure alphanumeric. TC is nice simple name.. Hard to forget really.
Set manual channels for the 2.4ghz.. this is utterly important.. repeater or bridge does not work with auto bouncing all around the place. Choose a suitable channel out of 1, 6, 11.
5ghz won't matter so you can leave that on auto if you want.
    Lastly security..
Let me suggest to start leave security off. Get it setup so you know it works then come back and test the security levels.
I am not sure what to select here.. you want wpa but the dd-wrt says not wpa+wpa2..and apple do not offer straight wpa as the bridge cannot resolve which to use.. you might need to use wpa2.. but that doesn't work on some routers with repeater.. or bridge.. you are going to have a bit of trial and error here.
Make the password something nice.. you guessed it pure alphanumeric.. no spaces, no special characters.
be creative and simple.. tc24passkeynot5 .. of course use what you like.. I am giving examples to make it easier. Update the TC.
Now just do the bridge setup on the WRT300.. there are two kinds of bridge.. client bridge and wireless bridge.. there is also repeater. Client bridge has no routing .. that is what you want. But it does other things which may make you go back. Please note bridges are strange beasts.. this is going to hide clients behind the Linksys MAC address.. and it can lead to issues.
Anyway read the setup tutorial. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged
You will find earlier one if you use the index.. this is also useful to read. And is more extensive.
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
There are several scattered around and I can point you to others.
When you are finished you will often need to reboot both boxes to get the bridge to establish.
Once you are done. See how it goes..
I tend to advise people that wireless bridges are flakey and will do down at the moment you want them to work. You can get EOP adapters which tend to be more reliable and use the WRT300n in wan bypass as a switch and WAP.. This is much more reliable.

  • Linksys WRT300N

    Hi,
I am trying to set-up a Linksys wrt3000n(ver2) Wireless router, and I just have some question concerning this.
Firstly the router is of the type which takes a Ethernet connection  from a Modem (I assume this is correct)
Now unfortchantly I can not just set it up and try until it works as other people rely on the connection so I need to be fiarly sure that there is a good chance that it is going to wok.
So my first question is how come when i switch it on and go to http:\\192.168.1.1 to get the control panel, once I am in the first page of setup is about my web connection, am I not right in thinking this is managed by modem which will be plugged into the router via ethernet? and if this is the case which of the six option do I select (DHCP, PPPoE, StaticIP, PPTP, Telstra, L2TP).
I am bit confused I have done some networking before but that was with modem plugged into a switch and that didn't care about the above details.
Secondly where will port forwarding be managed, surely this will be managed on the modem as this will have access to the internal network (unless the router put my modem on a different domain? (when the router is set to DHCP server, and modem to Client) and will be the first point of entry and all that the internet will be able to see.
lastly a modem, router(switch and access point), then computer configuration am I best of setting the wrt300n to be the DHCP server.
    Thanks for all the help.

All the Broadband Routers only Supports Ethernet Port, So make sure your Modem to also has an active Ethernet Slot and when you connect the Ethernet Cable from your Modem to the Computer you are able to go online.
Well about setting up your Linksys Router for the First time, you need to select the Options Depending upon your ISP. If your ISP is an Cable provider then you need to select DHCP on your Router, if its an DSL Provider so you need to Select " DHCP or PPPoE" depending upon your Modem Configuration.
Its better to lever the DHCP On your Router , So that the Devices or the Computers connected to the Router can easily Go online without any problem.

  • IMAC and Linksys WRT610N

Received my Linksys WRT610N router last night. Hooked it up and had a minor problem setting it up. Turned out to be my DSL ISP setting. After I figured it out though I got my IMAC running via the 5.0 GHz 802.11N side and my Iphone 3G, IPOS Touch and my Sony laptop running in about 5 minutes each. Just want to say that the IMAC and the WRT610N seem to work real good together.

I think you tried to change the wireless settings of the router using a wireless computer.
Do not change the wireless settings using a wireless computer. Use a computer which is wired to the router.
Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Open the setup page of the router and go to Wireless tab.
Change the configuration view to manual. Change the wireless channel to 11. keep the network mode to Mixed. Change the wireless network name SSID ( create a new wireless network). Save the settings.
Click on wireless security sub tab. Change the security mode to WPA2 personal with AES. Enter the password for the wireless network. Save the settings.
Now try to connect to the new wireless network and see if that works.
