IMac vs. Macbook Pro for Art and Design Student

Hello,
first off, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forums - it seemed like the best place, but I wasn't entirely sure.
Secondly, I can imagine you guys get asked this question a lot, so i guess I'm sorry for that!
Here's the situation - I'm going to College in England this September. I need a computer to accompany me with my course, and what I'll be doing with it. I'm studying Art and Design, but I already have a strong interest and a lot of experience in graphic design, vector illustration and web design - so it needs to fit my personal use as well.
I knew instantly that I not only wanted but needed an iMac. I saved up, compared the models and then, rather unfortunately, came to a stop.
Here's the problem - I need the processing power to handle the full Adobe CS5 suite, some 3D modelling and rendering and plenty of photos and music. However, Portability would be nice... although my college has 3 Mac suites, I think that being able to carry my work around and edit on the go will be an obvious plus. If I do go for the iMac, do you recommend me getting the 21.5" or the 27"? I (just) have money for either so that isn't really a problem, but is it worth the extra money for a larger screen and better graphics? Is the Macbook Pro powerful enough? The way I see it, I'm spending £2000+ To only get near the power of the iMac...
I hope you guys can help me out here, and thank-you in advance!
(And sorry for the long post...!)

Hi Bee!
Thanks very much for your advice!
However, why do you suggest the 21.5" over the 27"? Do you think it is worth the extra screen size, because I can afford either?
It seemed to me that the iMac was the best option also - I'm in need of the power, but I'm still deliberating over size.
Also, on a side note, do you know of any iPhone apps that can help me with transferring files from home to college I'm getting an iPod Touch as part of the new deal Apple are running and I just wondered if there were any apps that I would find handy for transporting files etc.?
Thanks again!

  • HT1420 I have 5 computers already authorized with my Apple ID.  How can  I add one more.  My home has 1 IMAC, 2 Macbook Pros, 1 Ipad and 2 Iphones.  Why are you now limiting me to five computers on my Apple ID when I am clearly an Apple product supporter.

I have six products in my home.  I can only authorize five using my Apple ID.  All my products are Apple - 1 IMAC, 2 MacBook Pros, 2 Iphones and 1 IPAD.  This doesn't seem right - We are so Mac'd out in our home and yet we are now being limited to the number of products we can have using the same Apple ID.  Any advice as to how to find a workable soliution to this?
    Thanks

You state you have 1 IMAC, 2 MacBook Pros, ... this = 3 Computers... you can Authorise up to 5 computers.

  • I'm getting a MacBook pro for college and just wanted to make sure I was correct on how to transfer everything to it such as iTunes. All I have to do is turn on home sharing and then log into iTunes on my new Mac right?

I'm getting a MacBook pro for college and just wondered how to transfer/share everything from my desktop pc to my Mac?

home sharing will work but won't transfer playcounts, ratings, and original "date added".

  • I am thinking of getting my first Macbook pro for uni and was just wondering which one would be the best? The macbook pro or macbook pro with retina display? or even wait for the new release in 2013 ?

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences.  If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section.  Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.

  • Imac versus Macbook pro for FCE 4

Just wanted to know which would be better for FCE 4. I would like the cheaper option with the Imac, probably the 20 inch, 2.4ghz with 2-4gb or ram (possibly an external hard drive).
Is that a good setup or do you really notice a difference without the almighty Macbook pro? When does one need a Macbook pro for FCE 4 with it's superior graphic capabilities? Thanks.

    hey there wintermute,
the iMac should be fine-unless you need the portability of laptop. Apple has a page in Pro-Profiles for Jack Kasdan's movie "The TV Set" & his editor, Tara Timpone cut it @ home w/ FCP on her iMac. so there ya go.... definitely get an external FW HDD for your video clips you import.
    good luck.

  • I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro for uni and I was wondering what the best type would be to get? One with retina display etc

I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro for uni next year and I'm not sure what type to get. I've heard different things about the retina display and that people only get it to edit photos etc but then people have said that it is quicker and makes the laptop lighter. I'm also unsure of how much storage I will need. If anyone can help that would be great!!

There are two screen displays available - Retina and non-Retina - and there's a world of difference between them. The Retina has non-user replaceable RAM and flash storage (well, the latter without voiding your warranty) and the non-Retina has user replaceable RAM and HD/SSD. And then, of course, there's the difference in the resolution of the screen itself... and a difference between the 13" and 15" screens (available in both 'flavors').
How much storage you need will depend on your needs.
I don't recommend the Retina models at this time - too many issues with tinting (on Samsung displays) and image retention (on LG displays).
So take a look at what the non-Retina machines have to offer - you can customize to your heart's content but remember that you can always upgrade the RAM and the hard drive in the non-Retina machines yourself.

  • IMac or Macbook Pro for Cubase?

I write music in Cubase Elements 6 (similar to Apple's DAW Logic Pro X) and i use lots of MIDI VSTs and virtual instruments.  The iMac I have now is a 2007 Core 2 Duo with 4gb RAM and it can't handle my songs once I put more than 5 tracks down.  I was looking at getting a newer iMac with i5 quad core with 8gb of ram but I am going out of state for college this fall and was wondering whether a macbook pro (2013) would be a better option.  With an i5 and I'd boost it up to 8 or 16 gb of ram to make sure my Cubase works smoothly.  What do you think? Are these machines powerfull enough to run Cubase with 30+ MIDI tracks?  What are my options? Thanks!

  • IMac or MacBook Pro for Multimedia?

I'm a college freshman studying Multimedia and Visual Arts and I need a computer that will help me do multimedia stuff. Before I was planning to buy a MacBook Pro but now I'm thinking of buying an iMac instead. I'm really not concern about portability but of course it would be nice to bring a computer wherever I want. I have a laptop here and I think that would help me do things at school. So would it be better to have an iMac at home or a MacBook Pro?

  • IMac   iPad MacBook Pro for college?

As title says do you think an iMac in combination with a iPad I already be a good combination for college? I will be an IT major. Or do you think that a MacBook Pro trumps the combination?

I'd like to add to what bold_seagull and Michael Duquette1 said. I purchased a refurbished iMac 21.5 and was delivered just a few days ago. I can't find a single scratch on it and it works perfectly. Would definitely recommend you consider a refurbished Mac from the online Apple store and alongside purchasing AppleCare, you'll not be paying much more than for a new Mac without the extended AppleCare.
If you're allowed to take your laptop into the class (believe it or not, the department head of the IT dept. last year banned the use of laptops in the class room, until recently where we're allowed to use laptops in the class room now), then I'd recommend you opt for a MacBook Pro. They're pretty powerful and can do most demanding tasks. If you're looking for portability, get a 13" MacBook Pro. I've never owned nor do I know how heavy the 15" MacBook Pros are, but if you're looking for more screen space while having portability nonetheless, then opt for a 15" MacBook Pro (though the 15" MacBook Pros are obviously a bit expensive; but there probably are 15" models available to buy on the Refurbished Macs section of the Apple website often).
Otherwise, if you don't need to take your laptop into college much, perhaps consider an iMac instead? The iMac is obviously more powerful and the screens are big.
    Hope this helps.

  • Minimum Macbook Pro for FCPx and Compressor

I do most of my video work on an 3.4 Ghz i7, 16GB iMac, but I'd like to be able to use a Macbook Pro, when traveling or for handing off tasks to a secondary machine.   My current Macbook is looking like it's on its last legs so the time is arriving to replace it with an upgrade.
So my question is, what is the minimum configuration for a Macbook Pro and still have it be usable with FCPx and Compressor? I'm thinking the base model 15" is probably enough or an upgraded 13".  They end up at about the same money.

Which is what I did with my iMac -- it was the maximum horsepower I could buy at the time.  I always use proxy media just for the speed of editing.  With the Macbook Pro it will never be my main tool, just a fallback, a traveling machine, or a place for handling Compressor tasks when I'm busy with something else.
I will check out the FCPx marketing info as I didn't think to look there.  Usually minimum requirements translate out as "barely workable configuration".

  • Which macbook pro for lightroom and photoshop

Have my eye on the two 15" models. One with Intel iris pro graphics, the other that also has the nvidia gt 750m. Maybe I'm making mountains from molehills. You can tell me if you think that's the case
I will use my laptop at home always attached to a large screen. It's what I do with my current, April 2008 macbook pro. Right now a 25" NEC. I may add an additional screen as well, so I might have two screens besides the laptop, one attached via hdmi.
Right now I don't do video work. No gaming concerns for me. Photoshop and Lightroom the bulk of my work. 70,000 image Lr catalog. Large size photoshop files. Well near 1 gb sometimes with several layers.
If I buy the mbp with just the intel iris pro graphics card I'm thinking to upgrade processor to 2.5ghz. Will also upgrade ssd to 500gb. Or do I need, will I benefit from the nvidia card and card switching, dgpu?
I've just been reading about problems with the discrete graphics card version. Problems with freezing video, some with problems looking at certain websites via a browser firefox or safari. I wonder if that's only with older versions of the mbp.
And that the mbp with the dgpu, the nvidia gt 750m always uses that card when there is an external monitor attached. Creates additional heat for the computer.
Just looking for some advice before i hand over the cash. There is only a 100 difference in price so in the end I'm not concerned about cost. Just want a computer to do what I need, do it well, and for me to have as few problems as possible. I do like to keep my computers a long time. This current mbp is seven years old in a month. The computer I had before that, a G4, lasted me eight years.
    thanks for advice...

The 2.6 Haswell i7 processor should be just fine - you really don't need the faster processors. Since Lightroom caches so much, though, it would be nice to keep most of that in RAM - much faster than writing/reading to a flash storage device - so I would recommend 16GB of RAM as you cannot ever upgrade the RAM on your own (or even through Apple).
You should be able to do anything on your MacBook Pro as on your iMac - albeit on a smaller screen!

  • Can you use the same Apple ID on more than one MacBook Pro for updates and applications?

We just got a few new MacBook Pro's and when I went to install updates it said I need to make an Apple ID.  Can you use the same Apple ID and email address for that Apple ID on multiple machines, or do I need them both to be unique per machine?  I'm not sure how that works when you have multiple machines.

An Apple ID is a user name you use for everything you do with Apple. Creating an account for an Apple service, such as the iTunes Store or the App Store, creates an Apple ID. Apple ID allows you to access other Apple services.   So you can use the same Apple ID for up to 10 Macs associated with it.
To create an Apple ID you need to enter  your full name and your primary email address as your Apple ID. This will be used as the contact email address for your account.

  • Macbook pro for reading and writing NTFS for my external hard drive

    Hello,
I have the new Macbook pro with retina display and I tried transfering some of the files on my macbook to my external hard drive (WD My Passport). Of course, it didn't let me. I did some research and found out that Mac only "reads" NTFS systems, but doesn't write. I did some more research to see if there was a way around this. There are several options and I need help with deciding which option is best.
    1.  Formatting my external hard drive to the FAT32 file system - however, it says that there are limitations with writing file sizes larger than 4GB. Is that true?
    2.  Formatting my external hard drive to the exFAT file system - is this a better option?
    3.  Downloading MacFuse - is it really discontinued?
    4.  Downloading OSXFUSE - is this better than MacFuse?
    5.  Downloading fuse4x - I don't know about this one
Aside from all this individual questions listed, which option is the best?? And, which option will give me less damage or data loss, and which is very reliable?? All I want to do is be able to transfer my documents or files on my MAC to my hard drive, but be able to read/write files on any other PC. I bring my hard drive everywhere and I always need to access my files with any computer I see (like in a computer lab at school/library).
If you can answer all of my questions, YOU'RE AWESOME!
    Thank you!

    Yes, exFAT is better.

Yes, you won't need any third party software, one less hassle.

    Don't bother.

Take a copy of all the data off the drive. Formatting the drive will erase all existing data.
Take the drive to the oldest Windows OS your going to use it with, if Windows XP there is a free exFAT update from Microsoft, install it first, then right click on the drive and format exFAT, it will create the appropriate partition table (either GUID or MBR) automatically.
Take the drive to the Mac, it will read it just fine whatever it is,.
    Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's

  • My mother and I share an iTunes account and library on our pc at home. I recently got a MacBook Pro for college and I want to put my music on my new laptop. What is the best way I should go about that?

any help you guys can give would be great! I have a limited amount of time to do this.

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder on your PC to /Music/ on your Mac.
Then delete what you don't want.
You will need to authorize yrou computer for the iTunes account yoru mother has.
You should create & use your own iTunes account for any more purchases.
You don't need to export anything and definitely don't need to (and shouldn't) convert anything.
