IMac vs. MBP - Need advice.

I need some advice from Apple guru's... I have a 2009 MBP that no longer meets my needs (only 4g ram and 500g HD).  I have several large iphoto libraries and do lots with imovie.  I need more power!  I also travel some.
So... MBP or iMac????????
iMac is crazy poweful and has up to 3 TB of memory.  I really hate using External Drives.... I want stuff local as much as possible. I probably have 1.5TB worth of stuff (photos and movies) since I have small kids.
rMBP has crazy power too and has up to 1TB of memory.  Therefore I would need to use some EHD.  But I can also travel with it.
Here is what I am thinking... am I crazy?:
Buy both.
Have iMac as the 'mothership' where I keep all my movies and photos from all years, except the current year.
Have rMBP with current year's iphoto and imovie libraries... then move those libraries to the iMac at end of every year.  This will allow me to travel with it also.
Can I remote into an iMac from rMBP if I am a 1000 miles away and need something from it?
Two computers may make for confusion regarding what's on what machine.
Can you tell I am confused!!!!
Thanks!

One thing you can try is calling Apple Customer Relations again at 800-767-2775, they might be more sympathetic to you this time. I would ask to be escalated to the next level and see if someone more senior can help.
I'm afraid that the problem at the root of this is the fact that you don't have Apple Care. Unfortunately, Apple respond very well indeed to those who do, but seem to to be able to do much to those outside the original warranty period.
I wish I could be more optimistic, you'll just have to charm the second lever person you speak to at Customer relations...

  • My iMac crashed hard, need advice

I have a 2.8 ghz iMac with 4GBand 500GB HD running 10.6.2. It would not reboot.
About 6 hours earlier, I had applied an update to the EyeTV software, and the update crashed (but the iMac kept running). However, the EyeTV successfully recorded a TV show, and the iMAC continued working for 6 more hours, so I don't know if this is related.
The symptoms were a very long white screen with Apple Logo and spinning gear. After say 45 minutes, this would turn into a blue screen and stay that way.
I have Apple Care on this machine, and they have been very helpful.
They walked my through resetting the PRAM, putting in the Snow Leopard Install disk and running Disk Utility. Repaired permissions (only one was bad), verified and repaired disk (several issues were found here.) Then tried to reboot. Still could not get past the white screen with Apple Logo and spinning gear.
Next they recommended reinstalling Snow Leopard which they said should take 45 minutes. The Snow Leopard install took over 6 hours. When I returned from an errand, I could see my desktop, but there was no dock. I did not realize that the iMac was still booting, so I tried rebooting. It took about 2 hours to reboot, but I finally had a desktop. It was acting very sluggish. A simple Finder operation (like OPEN FINDER WINDOW) might take several minutes. It was so sluggish that I could never get safari to open. I was able to open SuperDuper and note which backup volume was the most recent.
Finally, I shut down the Mac (this took a while) and booted from my most recent SuperDuper volume. The backup was about 24 hours old. I was able to access the Macintosh HD in the Finder so I did a FInder search for all files created in the previous day, and then backed them up to a thumb drive.
I decided to try the following.
    1) Used Disk Utility to reformat the Macintosh HD
    2) Started a copy of the backup volume from the backup to the Macintosh HD volume.
    3) After letting it run for 10 hours, it has only copied 14,000 files out of 1 million, or 29GB out of maybe 365GB.
I will get back on the phone with AppleCare when they open, but I would appreciate your impressions.
Does this sound like a failing hard drive?
What else should I be doing?
    Thanks for any advice.

This definitely sounds like a failing hard drive. If you can, fire up the Disk Utility, select the drive (topmost entry in the left column, not just the partation) and see if you get the S.M.A.R.T status at the bottom (bottom right column, usually 3rd from top). It should say SMART verified (if a modern drive fails, it will have a way to tell the computer via S.M.A.R.T interface)
Another thing. If you have Xbench or can manage to install it, run it and see where the performance tanks. If video and RAM and processor speed are okay, but disk/read and write fail this also indicates hard drive. If OTOH video and others are also sloooow, it may be something else though.
(One other thing that could come to mind would be a bad fan, if the CPU overheats it will throttle down, somtimes throttel down hard ... a tool like iStat/Pro could show the temps).

  • Strange things happening on imac startup. Need advice! (pre 10.8.3 update)

    Hey there!
So I turned my imac (2.7 i5 OS X 10.8.2 12GB RAM 1TB) on this morning and got no chime and black screen.
Held power button in to turn off, turn back on, got the chime this time but got stuck on load screen with spinning wheel thing (it stopped spinning).
Turned off again, turn back on, got the password screen but it wouldn't recognise my password.
Turned off AGAIN! Back on again this time starting as normal.
Went to check for updates straight after, tried updating to 10.8.3 and my civilisation game, the game update failed and it asked me to try again which I did and that worked, then turned off to finished the 10.8.3 update which then failed.
imac is now starting normally and everything seems ok apart from the fact that I'm still on 10.8.2 and the 10.8.3 isn't available in the app store any more.
Tried update to 10.8.3 via combo download on Apple site but that failed also, saying it could open the disk image or something.
    Things I've done:
Checked and Repaired permissions, verified disk.
I recently install Eastwest Symphonic orchestra which I'm running with Logic Pro 9 and an iLok - This was working fine for a day or two.
imac now boots normally with my MIDI keyboard, audio interface, external hardrive and iLok connected.
So much stuff has happened to my imac today it's been crazy! With important projects in progress this in worrying from Apple!
    Any suggestions for further action?
    Karl.

    Many thanks for the reply.
Changed my info, thanks for pointing that out.
I reset the PRAM and held the power button in to reset the other thing whilst the power cable was out. Booted normally after this.
    Few questions:
How will re-installing the OS affect my system? Will all my files and data be intact?
If I do re-install which OS will I get? My imac didn't come with Mountain Lion.
Are you saying the update will work after reinstalling OS?
To someone who's never re-installed their Mac OS before it seems a little over kil, but if it's a common thing to do then there shouldn't be a problem.
Will let you know if it continues.

  • Syncing iPod to new user account-need advice

Hey All! I set up a new user account for my friend on my imac, so he will want to sync his iPod Touch to iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, etc. in his new user account. I know there are plenty of freeware and shareware apps to get his music from the iPod into iTunes, but need advice concerning everything else oh his iPod.
I know I'll first get that pop up window that says his iPod is synced to another computer, and that I use "cancel" rather than "sync and erase". After doing that, I guess I use one of the shareware apps to get the music transferred over.
Now, after that, if I do a regular sync, will iTunes transfer his apps that are on the iPod?
Do I need to open iPhoto and download the photos on his iPod into iPhotot before doing a sync?
What about text messages? Will they remain in tact?
I don't think he uses the calendar on his iPod so no worries there....
What about Playlists that he has on the iPod? Will just the music transfer with the shareware apps or playlists also?
    Will Notes be saved?
Thanks for your help. Don't wanna screw up his iPod by setting up this user account for him.

Apps are tied to the ID I assume the new account is just on the iMac and not a new iTunes account?
Yes, you can import photos into iPhoto the same as you would off any camera.
You would need to transfer purchased content (like apps). You can't do that via sync as it's a new computer and all content will be erased as you are aware.

What happened to your friends computer? Was there no backup?

  • Ready to take it one higher ...need advice on best way to get more audio in

Nearly ready to upgrade to LP7...need advice on more gear.
Longtime Logic user, my old rig running with an Audiowerk 8 card (dont laugh too hard please, its worked great for years! ).
Now, after purchasing a MBP and LE7 ... how best to upgrade even further, to be able to record say 4-8 tracks (live instrument) at a time, into the optical or Firewire ports. I have an external 750Gb FW drive.
Also have a Mackie 16 chnl mixer and hoping to find a way to send the Master stereo pair (or maybe even track inserts) from the Mackie to the optical or FW input of my MBP. But how to do this ? Im guessing there's a box or gizmo somewhere that would be perfect.
Unfortunately, all of the boxes and gizmos Ive looked at so far seem to duplicate functions I already have, esp mic preamps (dont need any more of those !). I prefer 19" rackmount devices as they work well with portability, and fit into my SKB rig easily.
    TIA

if you really want to use the pre's on your mackie, and it has multiple bus/aux outputs which I presume it does, then you can easily set up a device such as the 828 to take all your input channels from the mackie, and then to run a bunch of return pairs back out to it.
depending on your budget there are prob a few others for you to look at. RME and metric halo always get rave reviews from users, but are pricier. also the focusrite sapphire might be worth a look, as well as the apogee ensemble.
also I just noticed you are using logic express, not pro. so there may be some limitations on the number of simultaneous inputs and outputs that I'm unaware of.

  • Upgrading my mbp. need suggestions and insights...

I have a Aluminum Unibody mid 2010 MBP 13.3 inch with 2.4ghz c2d and Lion. I'm finally gonne upgrade the ram to 8gb and the hdd to a 128gb ssd. i needed advice on how to do it and what are the things i should know. the of information on the Internet only confuses me.
    I have some questions...
does upgrading the ram or to an ssd void the APP?
are ssd's compatible with Lion? i have heard about some requirement of TRIM in OSes (which windows 7 has).
    will 8gb of ram do with a 128gb ssd on lion/2,4 c2d?
how do i transfer everything from the current hdd to the new one? install Lion from usb recovery disk and restore from tm? or is there another way?
i'm planning on either crucials or owc. whats ur advice?
apple auth. service center here in Mumbai says that they can install it for me on a chargeable basis. is the charge under app legitimate?
any other pro and cons... insights.. useful tips... suggestions... warnings... etc.?
    thanks for time.
    Neerav

First question, yes you would be charged to have a tech do the installation for you.
Question two. Put the old drive into an external enclosure. Boot the computer from the old drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the SSD drive. Source means the old drive.

  • I need advice: photo programm

    Hello,
I need advice: which photo-software is a good option, when I don't want to pay the price of Photoshop?
    iMac 10.6
    Thank you!

If iPhoto doesn't do what you need you could have a look at Aperture (available at the Mac App Store, but have a look here for a free trial: http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial/
Pixelmator is the one I use - great value for the money and does everything I used to need to do in Photoshop. Have a look here: http://www.pixelmator.com/
If you buy it from the Mac App Store Pixelmator comes with a free upgrade to version 2 (rumoured to be in the next couple of weeks, according to the developers blog).
Usual caveat: I don't intend to sound like a commercial, just a happy user with no connections to Pixelmator.

  • Newbie needs advice on audio interface

just purchased iMac 27" with Lion...have nice sounding Taylor 810 accoustic...want to record guitar and vocals, strictly a hobby. need advice on audio interfaces...willing to spend $600 on the Duet 2.0 if it's as good as the web reviews say it is but???... will I hear a difference with a $250 interface like a presonus firestudio mobile (vs. $600 Duet 2)?... want something that sounds great and works well with GB/Lion....thanks

To be honest, if using mics, you will get more out of picking up the FireStudio Mobile and spending the difference (or more) on treating the room you will be recording and mixing in.
As far as Lion is concerned, just check with Presonus about compatibility.
If you pick up the FireStudioMobile, it ships with Studio One Artist. It has a better comping feature than GB does...
TBH, if this is strictly hobby stuff, by the time you treat your recording environment, pick up decent mics, a second hard drive, stands, cables, monitors, headphones, a handful of plugins, another DAW or two, furniture etc, etc, you will not be too concerned about ownng the FireStudio... Its a great little unit that is very reliable and has a solid build.

FPC wont let me render! I'm a video editor and have over 70 gb worth of videos on the imac which all need to be kept for various clients/backup/original versons but now beloved imac is full, only had it for 5 months! Will Ineed external hard drive every 5 months?? This can't be I've already resorted to getting rid of unsed applications such as garage band, iTunes, address book ect. I've trashed everything I could. what next ???
My video files are massive, converting them to a different format doesn't reduce the size of them it just turns them into mp4 or apple pro res ect
This iMac is for work only so there's no pictures, no music, no conacts, no messenger, no games, nonothing but videos!!

Have a look at this: http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
It will show you exactly what is taking up all of your space.
You also may want to consider some kind of external storage just for your video projects.

  • Need advice about certification: do J2SE 1.4 or wait for 1.5 to go out?

I need advice here! I am studing for Java Programmer certification (310-035) and I know now that the certification does not have any expiration date, instead it's version based. So, if I get now a J2SE 1.4 certification, soon it will be outdated... I guess!
Does anyone know or have any ideia of WHEN java 1.5 sdk will be avaliable, and anyone can tell me how long it will take for a new 1.5 programmer certification be avaliable for general public?

Do both. 1.5 is far enough away that you do not want to wait for it.
And besides, 1.5 has enough new stuff in it that you'll want to recertify anyway.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

  • Can I download FCPX on my imac and MBP using the same apple ID?

Hello,  I am just wondering how it works with mac store apps.    I use both my imac and MBP for my work.   Will I have to re buy FCPX for both, or can I use it on both with the same apple id?   This works with apps on my 2 iphones and ipad, but I was not sure about imac and MBP.
Thank for any info you can give

Don't mention it. Although I'm one of those dispised Americans. Worse yet, I come here for four or five months then leave. Then I tell all our American friends awful lies about Canadians.

  • Need advice on video software.

    Need advice on video software.
I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?
I am also asking these same questions on the cyberlink site.
I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
