IMac w/ ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

I'm about to order a new iMac but i have a few questions about the graphics capabilities. I'm a long time PC gamer but decided i want to make the full switch to Mac. Ideally a MacPro would have been my first choice but im not that rich.
I intend to order an iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB. Will this card handle games pretty well? I play world of warcraft and EVE online.
Thanks for your input.

only issue here is that EVE for mac has a graphics bug because of driver issues... I dont know if this applies to the ATI iMacs, but it sure affects my Nvidia iMac. And this is a bug that have been present since EVE was released for mac, and Apple are aware of the problem, but has yet to fix it. So if I ever play EVE for more than background playing or in station use, I always restart into bootcamp, to play EVE there...

I game in a clan that plays Battlefield 2 Project Reality.
Will this card handle this game at the high settings and native resolution of the monitor? I also play COD4 and have the same question for that game.
Thanks for your input. I'm sure this will be helpful for all of us and I will share it with my clan of over 100 people strong.

Yeah it plays crysis fine, here is a video of me playing it:

  • IMac and video card ATI Radeon HD 4850

Using my iMac 24"/3.06/SD with OSX 10.6 and trying to access Final Cut Express, it tells me I need an AGP video card! Why isn't the ATI Radeon HD 4850 able to display FCE? It operates all my other Apple software. Please, has anyone an idea about this?

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB

Does anyone know if 1 ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB uses how much power, because in the new Mac Pro (early 2009) it can't use more than 300W of graphics power consumption. So, i am thinking of getting 4 of those ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB graphics cards (because i'm a real gamer) and stick them all into my new Mac Pro (early 2009)but if it does exceed 300W, then would anyone suggest a powerful gaming graphics card that is both compatible with Mac and Windows as i am planning to get windows vista on boot camp. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB is said to be a very crappy graphics card so i'm saying NO WAY!! to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB.

Get what you need for OS X, then get a PC card just for Windows. The GT120 might do normal things in OS X and grab whatever you want.... there is 75W and two aux power connectors of 75W each. GTX 275 Nvidia or something perhaps.

  • Television and TV Recording with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB  equip Mac Pro

I have been looking into a Mac Pro 2.66-3.0 Dual-core equipped with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB. One of the things I would like to accomplish is to also use the thing as a television and TV recorder (reliably). I have experience with the a PC equiped with a ATI9700pro all in wonder. I had nothing but problems with the software with hours (weeks) spent trying solve the issues. Turns out this is not an unusual thing with the ATI-Allinwonder. Thought I would check here to see whether anyone has input on how the x1900 works on the mac pro esp as a tv device.

the elgato system is an external tv tuner that connects by USB. It has nothing to do with the graphics card in your mac.
you can connect an antenna, cable, s-video or composite. Some of the models accomodate HDtv now.
the results are clean, and i've had no problems.

  • Wondering if I should return my un-opened iMac with ATI Radeon 4850??

Just got my iMac with the ATI Radeon 4850 and wondering if I should return because of all the problems I have been reading about and just go to an Apple store and get the iMac with a GT 130.
I haven't opened it yet, will Apple charge me a restocking fee? And will Apple pay for return shipping if I mention the reason I am returning is all the issues I have been reading about concerning the 4850?
    Any opinions will be appreciated!!

I would not base my decision on what I read in the forum. People who have issues generally post topics and replies to report problems. All the people who are having no problems will not bother to post to say +everything is fine and I'm happy+.
You should contact Apple directly to find out their policy on returns, and whether it makes a difference if you opened the package or not.

  • IMac, OpenGL, ATI Radeon

I noticed that on the +Adobe After Effects+ page for supported OpenGL cards that the iMac offered graphics card, the *ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO*, is not supported.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/opengl.html
Does anyone have an iMac and use Adobe After Effects on the Mac OS? What are the limitations or inability to use After Effects smoothly?

I think you will have better luck with your question at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc24292/
I also found this: "Yes, the 2600 supports all the Open GL 2.0 functions that AE likes. Make sure you update to AE 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 which enables OpenGL on the Mac." in the After Effects forum.

  • Just a feedback re Ati Radeon 4870 HD  512mb (from Apple UK Website)

I know lots of people have been asking if this card works on 2006 Mac Pros V.1.1.
Well I took the plunge and purchased one fitted it into my MP with leopard O/S
and away it went no problemo as they say Sinc doing this I have updated my
O/S to Snow Leopard and the card run brilliantly with it. I hope this helps
clarify that this card will work with V1.1 despite what Apple state in their
    website advertisement.
    Happy computing Denis

A 5770 is $249 or slightly less and in the same dept to me as replacing hard drives, adding some RAM in order to work and because my understanding is it was the first card to support 3 monitors.
The 5770 only requires 10.6.5+ - and the 4,1 had way too many issues with 10.5.7/10.5.8
The 4870 may or may not provide what you need for the software you run, even though 3 yr old machine but 4 yr old plus video card.

The default card was Nvidia GT120 and req'd no power cables and popular way to support more displays.
People were running DUAL 4870s to support 3rd monitor though back then:

  • Is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512mb Graphics card good

I'm thinking about getting a new mac pro and i've been looking a this graphic card and i've also been reading comments about this card and just wondering is this card good at all.
    null

I don't want to sound like a jerk but don't want people to wast their money because
    You said
"If you have a 2006-07 mac pro, and want the most power you can get, crossfire two flashed pc 4870s."
That is wrong because a 2006-2007 mac pro only has ONE PCI.1.1 X16 slot you can only make it so you have two X8 slots or one X16 & one X8 To get anything from a CrossFire or SLI setup using any PCI X16 card you need two card slots that are X16.
I do agree & know if you have a 2006-2007 mac pro, then yes the apple 4870 is most likely the best you can get, besides going a flashing route. (I don't like to flash & the 4870 WORKS IN THE 2007 Mac Pro)
I have a 2,1. Mac Pro 8 Core 2007 & just got the New 2009 8 Core with 2.93 GHz Duel CPUs & I got the new GTX 285 came in the mail before the Mac Pro I got the 4870 from the 2009 to work in the 2007. But I have not tried the GTX 285 in the 2007 as the drivers have to be loaded from the disk that comes with it first & I did not take the time to do that & had the reformat the 2009 after trying to put the GTX 285 in the 2009 I found myself removing the 4870 I had just put in the 2007 then back in the 2009 then reinstall OS X 10.5.7 after that loading the driver disk from the GTX 285 first in the 2009 before placing the card the new Mac.
So I will when I have less work try the GTX 285 in the 2007 Mac Pro & let you know what happens.
I hope I was of Help

  • AE CS6, Imac and Ati Radeon HD 6750M

    Hi there,
I'd like to know for sure if my HD6750M (512VRAM) is well recognized by AE, including the OpenGL/OpenCL infos because I have serious doubt about that when
I look at the GPU info in AE, for example the shader model is greyed (it's the "modèles d'ombrages" option in french) ,
this could explained why it 's very slow to navigate in the time line, as the preview too
Please let me know what to think about it ?

thanx for your reply but that is not what I understand in the above link,
it seems related to the ray traced engine which is only for 3D extrusion I believe :
Optional: Graphics card from list below with at least 1GB VRAM and CUDA 5.0 for GPU acceleration of ray-traced 3D renderer
This is not my concern here & it doesnt really answer my question :
does AE "see" my GPU as it should for OpenGL /OpenCL and why is the shader model option grey out ?
PS : I totally understand that my GPU is really not optimum for a sofware like AE, but as I said before I have to understand what's going on here.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512mb

I recently bought a new Intel Mac with a 30inch display and most of all the bells and whistles. Recently my monitor for no apparant reason will just go to black. I will be right in the middle of working in final cut, mail, or something and poof!...everything disappears! the only thing I can do is popwer the computer down by holding in the power button - then I unplug and plug the monitor back in - let it sit for a minute or two - then pwer everything up again.
Is the graphics card overheating? This morning I took the side panel off when I powered the computer back on and touch the top of the card and it seemed really warm...I noticed that the little red fan wasn't spinning either...I literally gave it a light "flick" and it started spinning...I wasn't sure if that was a coincedence or not. But it made me think that maybe it's not getting a good "signal as to when to turn on and cool...Does anybody know anything about this kind of thing or am I going completely in the wrong Direction. The computer is only about a month and a half old so it kind of ticks me off that I am encountering all of these bugs!
    Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Card went bad - relapce by Apple care! Whew!

  • Mouse skip imac 27 (ATI Radeon HD 5750) and second monitor

    Hi
Yesterday i bought a new mousepad and a second monitor
I noticed that i had some trouble with my mouse skipping around the monitor, and my first thought was for my mousepad texture, but is not that
    this morning i tried:
    - with different surfaces, but with no luck - still skipping around
    - try different mouse: a small laptop mouse - still skipping around
    - try different mouse: old mighty mouse (USB) - still skipping around (it is also very slow even a top speed)
    - then i try different USB ports - still skipping around
after that i thought at yesterday changes... since the mac is new, i did install some different software and A NEW MONITOR
so i tried to unplug the new monitor and the mouse works fine.... i actually got a little worried
i did plug the monitor again, turn it back on and everything worked... turn monitor off and mouse skips around
SO.. the problem is that with a second monitor pluged in but turned off, mouse get crazy
