IMAC Wakes Up

My IMAC has begun "waking up" at night. It hasn't done this previously. My question is; Why is it doing this, and how do I stop it from doing so.
Thank, Terry

Do you have anything checked in System Preferences>Energy saver? Try resetting the PRAM and see if that helps. Please let us know how you make out,

External hard drive keeps ejecting after iMac wakes from sleep. TM does not recognise, so have to unplug then re plug in Ext HD, only then TM will perform a back up. Not seamless backups. Help to resolve would be grand

Ive got the same problem with a Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro on my iMac Ive tried it on a few other machines and I think its happened on them, I say think because it was only when it had happened a couple of time that I started to take notice of circumstances etc and ive only had the drive a week, downloaded what may be a more uptodate "My Button manager" from the WD site still happened but Ive got this idea that it didnt happen on one machine which may not have had the MyButton thing on at that time, have you solved it yet I am using USB at the moment.

  • External hard drive won't power back up when iMac wakes from sleep

I have the external hard drive connected via USB. I always put my iMac to sleep before going to bed and I wake it up when I come home from work. Except that when I do, the external hard drive doesn't power up. It still shows in Finder, but clicking on it's folders just opens them up as if they were empty. There's no access noise and the drive can't be ejected.I have to switch it's power off and turn it back on for it to spin back up.
At first I thought it was because I had Energy Saver set to power down the drives whenever possible, which works just fine when it's on, the drive powers on and off as needed just as long as the iMac doesn't go to sleep. I turned it off just to make sure and it made no difference. As soon as the iMac goes to sleep and the drives powers down, it will not come back on without a power cycle once the iMac wakes.
I've used this drive in an old Macbook for years without having this problem. The only difference is that the Macbook was on 10.6.8. I was thinking about buying a 4 bay USB enclosure and filling it up with hard drives, but I'm not about to do that if every time I put the iMac to sleep, the whole thing will not power back on without a power cycle.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Not sure if you managed to get this issue resolved yet Marcus, but I too have a similar problem:
Currently I'm upgrading from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) on both an iMac and MacBook Pro (both Intel), but before I proceed with the OSX upgrade I wanted to back everything up. Thus far I have partitioned an external firewire drive (G Drive - one that is bootable), and cloned each machine using Carbon Copy Cloner to it's own partition (both GUID). There is plenty of space left over on each partition.
The issue - I can boot the OS X from the external drive on the MacBook Pro but not on the iMac.
When I restart and hold down Option on the iMac the only drive that appears is the HDD, not the other two selectable drives that are visible if I boot up on the MacBook Pro. On the iMac in System Prefs > Startup Disc I can see all 3 drives but when I select it and restart, the machine freezes on the grey loading screen and goes no further.
Not that it should make a difference, but there is a 3rd partition on the external drive that is currently empty (for extra storage).
Any help is greatly appreciated - I can't find any relevant answers elsewhere. Thanks,
    Dan

  • Folder always opens when imac wakes from sleep

Don't think its a huge problem but when new imac wakes from sleep the same folder always pops up on screen(shaded in black). It always has to be closed before I can proceed with anything.Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also the folders name is always highlighted red. Thanks

  • IMac wakes from sleep on its own with Yosemite

After installing Yosemite, my iMac wakes from sleep all on its own multiple times throughout the day and night.  The screen does not turn on when this occurs and it goes back to sleep on its own.  I figured the my energy settings may have changed after the upgrade, but nothing is different.  I have no schedule set and the "wake for network access" is unchecked.

To my knowledge, any Mac that is 1. connected to power and 2. not powered down will wake periodically for the reasons I explained, and perhaps for additional reasons known only to Apple. If disabling "wake for network access" does not change anything, all I can say is that it's working as Apple intends it to work. Before you ask, I strongly discourage you from finding clever system "hacks" or workarounds to prevent your Mac from working as designed.
It may or may not be a bug. Whether it is or not though, if it bothers you, consider providing feedback to Apple.
When questions such as yours arise, it helps to look at iOS. iPads and iPhones will all periodically connect themselves for the purposes of downloading emails, Messages, alerts etc. There is no way to disable that, other than to completely power down the device, which almost no one does. Apple has been inexorably changing OS X to effectively implement iOS design features such as this – for better or worse is not for us to say.
May I ask why this concerns you? Perhaps that would lend some insight regarding possible solutions.

    Hello,
Most likely causes are USB devices that are plugged in, or scratchety Mice/Keyboards, but...

  • IMac wakes up from sleep independently

My iMac wakes up from sleep mode. Sometimes I have to login, sometimes not. Time Machine is inactive because the external HD is not connected. I´m a new Apple-User, switched just about 14 days ago to Apple and I don´t find a solution for my problem.

I have the same issue.  I'm also not using Time Machine on my iMac.  It happens within the same couple of hours every few evening.  I think it might be a process / update that is looking for updates in the background.  I think I'm going to check the logs next time it happens.

  • HT1349 Why would my intel imac wake at night unattended?

Why would my intel imac wake at night unattended?

    Hey alexander1071,
I found an article that goes over some tips for when your computer won't stay in sleep mode:
If your Mac doesn’t go to sleep when you expect it to, or if it wakes up unexpectedly, you may need to change your sleep preferences or something may be waking your computer.
Make sure your computer’s sleep settings are set the way you want. In Energy Saver preferences, use the slider that controls the computer’s sleep.
Other users may be waking your computer remotely to use its shared resources. If you don’t want this to happen, open Energy Saver preferences and deselect “Wake for network access.”
Bluetooth devices can wake your computer. If you don’t want a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse to be able to wake the computer, open Bluetooth preferences, click Advanced, and then deselect “Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer.”
Key presses and mouse or trackpad clicks can wake your computer. If your computer wakes when you’re not present, something may be pressing the mouse button or keyboard.
Apps that access a disk can keep your computer from going to sleep. For example, iTunes accesses your disk to read the songs it plays, and DVD Player accesses the optical disc drive to play movies.
People using shared services on your computer can prevent it from sleeping. For example, they may be using a printer connected to your computer or accessing shared files stored on it. In Sharing preferences, turn off any services you don’t need to use by deselecting the On checkbox next to the service.
If Spotlight is indexing your hard disk, your computer won’t go to sleep. Click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the menu bar and check whether it says it’s indexing. Indexing your files can take several hours, depending on the number of files on your computer.
Malfunctioning USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt devices may keep your computer from going to sleep. Disconnect those devices and see if your computer goes to sleep. If it does, reconnect each device, one at a time, until you find the one that’s malfunctioning. Contact that device’s manufacturer for more information.
Some PCI extension cards intentionally prevent a computer from going to sleep. Refer to the documentation that came with your card.

  • Magic Trackpad / iMac wake up issue.

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a fix for the following Magic Trackpad / iMac wake up issue please?
Basically hooked up a Magic Trackpad that was bought several months ago now and found that it works great however the 'click' functionality does not work whilst waking up my iMac. The cursor moves as it should however it's not possible to click onto either a registered account nor guest account in order to enter a password to wake-up from screensaver.
To get around this I've had to pair-up my Magic Mouse again which is not ideal.
A fix for this would be appreciated.
    OS installed: OSX 10.7.5.
    Thank you.

Just my .02, but why do you want a screen save? I was told a long time ago by some engineers not to have your screen saver running. Just non essential. Me, I have none of our computers doing so. They time out and sleep in between, so the hard drives and logic boards power down, if not shut down completely.
As for you situation, I had the same problem a while back and believed it was one or more of the apps. in the back ground. Could even be the UPS. Either re load your OS to check any corruption. And/or, check your login list of apps. and finder to see what is running without your knowledge or in the background, then closing out of open programs one by one prior to the screen saver engaging and see if it changes things.

  • External hard drive disappears when imac wakes up after sleep

    Hi Everyone.
Got a really silly question but I can't seem to figure out where to fix this
I have 4 USB 500gig hard drives all run off a 13 port powered hub.
Now I have one hard drive set aside for my films which I and ripping so they can be view via my apple tv 2nd gen. The other is for MP3's and the other 2 get are redundunt at the moment.
No the problem is when I rip a DVD, I rip it to the hard drive on the iMac and then trans the files to the external drive.  As I rip them at a high quality (2 to 3 gigs per film) I get the transfer box saying it will take X amount of time.  The only thing is the iMac after some minutes will go to sleep.
When you wake it up the hard drives have disappeared and the is an error saying the drive have been ejected incorrectly.
I'm assuming the iMc is putting the drives to sleep when it goes to sleep.
Is there a way to keep the hard drives running but only put the momitor to sleep.  The problem is also happening when I use USB memory sticks (I have a 4/8/16 & 32gig sticks all with various bits of info that I am sorting out from the move from Windows PC to Mac.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this fix coz I can't seem to find the setting
    Thanks
    Rick

When you are doing this, set the drive to never sleep, slider completely to the right and display sleep to something like five minutes. Or just hit Control-Shift-Eject, to sleep the display. Uncheck "put the hard disks to sleep..." That said, the firmware on the externals may be spinning them down. But this shouldn't be happening if they are being written to.

  • WiFi Internet connection lost after iMac wakes up, what to do ?

    Hi,
I used my iMac for a while with an older D-link product and Internet connection was fine. I purchased a new D-link product and whenever my iMac goes to sleep and wakes up again, I lose INternet connection although my airport icon still recognizes the network and says signal is at full strength. Apple Care can't help me.
I have a PC directly connected via wire to the same router and Internet connection is flawless so my ISP is not the problem. I use cable modem.
No it got worse. I start up my Mac, have connection but if I stay to long at the same webpage and then try another page, somehow it stalls!! Very frustrating. Anyone any ideas ?
    Thx&Rgds

  • When iMac wakes my wifi won't connect, and nothing else works.

Since updating to Mtn Lion on my iMac, when my computer has been hibernating for a while (a few hours+) when I wake it, it attempts to connect to wifi, and never actually does.  While this occurs, I can't open any program, application, even Activity Monitor to "force" the task to end or anything.  My only solution has been to manually shut off and re-boot the machine.
Anyone else having these issues?  Once I reboot, everything is fine - it automatically logs into the wifi and programs start instantly.  It's as if there's a hang up that's preventing anything else from happening.
No issues with my macbook pro

Use the ( - ) button to delete the wireless network settings you currently have configured, and restart the computer. Go ahead and reconnect to your network, and hibernate. See when it comes out of it, if it's resolved. Or wait awhile

  • IMac wakes on its own after putting it to sleep

Just got my iMac back from the shop with a new hard drive put in. After setting it up, it seems to wake from sleep on its own after a few minutes. Only change since before sending it in to be fixed (when i had no issues with sleep) is that I now have it set up to access the internet thru a wireless router. Could that cause the waking up? should i try turning Airport off before sleeping to see if that works?
    Thanks

I'm kind of out of ideas, for now.
Have you tried to repair permissions/disk? I'm not exactly sure how your system is set up, but your wireless internet shouldn't be to blame [in theory]. When you put your iMac to sleep, it should be turning off the AirPort card [along with various other components]. It would be a possibility that if you had your mac hooked in by ethernet and you had something like "Wake on ethernet ring" checked in System Prefs. [that your mac could randomly wake up].
I almost wonder if it's a firmware problem. Or maybe a problem with a Mac OS X update, I'm also contemplating that it could help to download a combined updater and try to install.
    Hmmmm....
I'll think on it. I know there's some idea that I'm missing here which could help, but I just can't get it to come to mind.
