Imac Wants to Start but Won't

I have a
iMac DV+
(Summer 2000)
Mac OS 9.0.4 v2
Indigo
450 MHz
Slot loading DVD-ROM
20 GB hard drive
When I push the start button on the front of the computer, I get the welcome tone and it sounds like the hard drive is starting up, like when you start a car with a bad battery or starter, it kind of revs, and revs, and the HD starts spinning a little faster then the computer shuts off. In order to start it again, I have to unplug the computer, wait 1 minute, plug it back in and hit the button.
This has happened a few times after the computer has been turned off after being left on for long periods of time. In earlier cases, I just had to unplug and replug a few times and it would start. This time however, it doesn't want to get going.
What's the problem?

I think it worked from the CD because it uses less power than the hard drive. Normally, everything should work of course, but if the power supply is going bad, there may be less power available, and some internal "switch" gets triggered to prevent overloading. I think you may have bypassed this triggering because a computer uses more power when it initially turns on and then power requirements go down a lot once it's up and running. You had the hard drive disconnected when it initially starts, then plugged it in later.
If the problems recurs when you boot from a cold start, you can't take it apart each time to disconnect the hard drive and reconnect. I can think of a way to power the hard drive independently, but if the power supply is failing, eventually it will fail completely.
Here's another thought... Is the iMac connected to the wall outlet through a "power strip" or some type of surge suppressor or UPS device? If so, have you tried to connect it (by itself) to a wall outlet directly. I'm thinking maybe the "device" between the iMac and its power source is faulty and not providing a full connection. Or, if you have many devices connected to the power strip (printer, scanner, external drives, speakers, etc), there may not be enough "juice" to go around from that one wall outlet connection.
Someone I help with Mac issues had this problem, not with the Mac but with his external hard drive. It kept having minor to severe disk directory issues; I had to run Disk Warrior on it on several occassions. I thought it was a bad drive. Then I notice the "octopus" of power connectors under the desk. I split the power connections with the iMac and external drives on a separate wall outlet, and there have been no problems since then. Thought I'd mention that, because your problem seems to be related to powering the iMac. Maybe the power supply is OK, but the iMac is not drawing enough power.

I posted this problem before at this link,
    Previous Post
As in the previous post, my computer would turn on, then after the welcome tone, it would shut off. Disconnecting the HD and then starting the computer screen, then plugging in the HD seemed to work and got my IMac up and running again.
Yesterday, I couldn't get my Imac to start up even after disconnecting the HD. It seems like there isn't enough power to even start up the screen anymore?
Is it time for a new mac?
Can the HD be taken out of the Imac and plugged in to a G4 Tower?

I'd recommend a Firewire one like this but if it's only for one shot usage then a cheap USB one from ebay would do.
The main advantages of Firewire is speed (i.e. sustained data rate) and ability to boot a Mac.

    Hey terremo,
Thanks for the question. From the information you provided, it sounds like the iMac is successfully turning on, however video is not displayed. These symptoms can usually be isolated further by the troubleshooting steps in this article:

  • My iMac starts, but won't get past the loading screen?

My iMac starts up, but won't even get past the white screen with the Apple logo.
It kept giving me black screens, and would not start in safety mode. After command + option + p + r, the black screens stopped coming, but it still won't get past the loading screen, if I let it load long enough the Apple logo is replaced by a "denied" symbol but that is the only thing that happens. By hitting command + d, I was told nothing is wrong. When pressing command + r and going to disk utility, it found an issue while verifying and repairing. At first it stated "invalid journal" but now it only says to reinstall everything and that the problem couldn't be solved. I cannot mount the harddrive, and Time Machine just searches for copies without getting anywhere. When I try installing OS X (Mavericks) again, the harddrive doesn't even show up. What do I do?

The HD sounds like it has crashed, take it into your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), if you bought AppleCare this will be covered. If you don't have an Apple Store in your area and don't know of any AASPs then please click https://locate.apple.com/country to begin finding one.

  • Safari 4.0.3 Starts but won't display any windows properly

Since accepting the update to Safari 4.0.3 this morning, Safari starts but will not display any windows, just the main application menu bar.
Trying new window has no effect and launching a history item either has no effect or safari crashes complaining that the crash could have had something to do with
    libcooliris.dylib
I therefore removed /Library/InputManagers/Cooliris but this made no difference.
History flow displays but won't launch any windows and strangely Menu>History>Home opens a window but there are no tabs nor URL nor search bar, but there is only the history bar. The window is all grey including where the page should be.
Trying to open other history items in this window changes the title, but no page contents are displayed.
I also tried reinstalling 4.0.3. from the Apple website, but this made no difference.
Have you any idea what I could try next?
    Thanks

Deleted all from /Library/InputManagers and problem solved.

  • I want to transfer my Windows files from my Clickfree external drive to my new iMac. iMac recognizes the drive but won't read the files. What should I do? My PC hard drive is dead so I can't hook up my iMac to that.

I'm switching from Windows to iOS. But my new iMac won't allow me to transfer my Windows files on my Clickfree HD425 over to the iMac. It initialy didn't even recognize my hard drive during set up, so I manually went through Finder where it recognized the Clickfree drive. But my files wouldn't appear. I can't go back to my original Windows computer because the hard drive crashed, and that's why I bought this new iMac in the first place. What should I do? As a Mac newbie who was reluctant to exit the Windows world, I don't want my original babystep into the iOS world soured by my first experience.

Hi Rick, & a warm welcome!
In Disk Utility on the Mac, what Format does it say the drive is?

  • IMac G5 will chime but won't do anything else-

Hi all! Before posting I made sure to read as much as I can in this forum & various sites so that I won't be repeating a previous post. So I apologize in advance if I do. So on to my problem…
When I press the power button on my iMac G5, the chimes go off, but the screen stays black. Then after a few minutes, the fan goes full blast. Here are the different things I've done.
    a. Plugged and unplugged the power cord and used different outlets.
    b. Reset the SMU
    c. I followed the instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2173 (I don't know if this matters but LED 1 and 2 light up)
    d. I inserted the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" to run Disk Utility but nothing seems to happen when the disk is inside (I do hear the CD being read and spun around). I couldn't get passed step 1 with the instructions from this previous post http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11426662
I've had problems in the past and most of the time it's fixable. But nothing seems to be working now. Are there any other tips or suggestions you all might have?
Thanks for your time, I greatly appreciate it!

    dapnoyqpid,
So everyone has given you very good diagnosis and repair paths. If you look at Jim Warholics site and determine that you have bad capacitors. (Be aware that just a tiny bit of doming will indicate a bad capacitor.)
So if after you survey all the capacitors in your iMac you find that you have just a few bad ones you can buy the kit from Jim and attempt your own repair.
    Read this thread first:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2287036&start=0&tstart=0
Now I recently got 2 iMac G5 20" 2.0 GHz machines donated that both had the capacitor problem. They both had the RAM maxed out at 2 GBs so I was licking my chops as they were sorely needed at the school for a video GarageBand class.
I took both of the backs off and surveyed the capacitors. One had two bad ones but the other had 12! I actually had a bad 2.0 GHz 20" iMac w/ a bad power supply sitting in my "to be repaired" area. It also only had two bad caps on the logic board.
In starting the removal of the two bad caps I was reminded how difficult this process was so I just heated the through board leads until I could move the leads up to that I had about 1/4 inch of a gap between the bottom of the cap and the logic board. I then cut the leads off as close to the bottom of the cap as possible and tacked soldered the new caps on. I used a Xacto knife to do the cutting. Be very careful of fingers and don't cut the logic board (Did that on an old G3 iMac and it was very dead afterwords) or damage any of those tiny SMT parts.
    Here's some pictures:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/iMac%20G5%20capacitor%20repair /
Turned out these caps had to lay down since they were in the area where the spring loaded box where the foot attaches.
Those two iMacs are now back in action and ready for the summer camp video students.
The one with the 12 bad caps is now at the back of my "to be repaired" area waiting for a day when I'm really bored with nothing to do.
    Good luck.
    Richard

  • IMac connects to wifi, but won't open all websites

I can get email, but only loads certain websites.  Facebook and Google work, but not Amazon (and many more).  I get an error message in Safari "Safari can't open the page because the server stopped responding".  The iMac connected perfectly before, the only thing that has changed is that we were having people use our wifi (of which data is limited since we live in a rural area).  So, we added the security feature "Wireless Mac Authentication" to our router.  We have added the addresses of all of our devices and they all are working fine except for the iMac.  I have tried changing the DNS to the same that is on my Macbook pro, but it doesn't help.  Also, had a WEP for the router, but changed it to a WPA because I thought maybe that was the problem, but it did not help either.  Thanks for any help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MSI GE70 Laptop will start but won't boot

    Hello
I've had my GE70 for almost two and a half years now and it has recently started to show a few problems.
A couple weeks ago the laptop started to freeze whenever I moved it too abruptly, particularly when holding/pressing the case near where the HDD is installed.
Now, I took it on a trip with me, and when I tried to turn it on, the fan would spin, the CD/DVD drive would run, and the power light would also turn on, but it wouldn't boot (won't even get to BIOS, just a black screen). The laptop doesn't boot because capslock/numlock lights do not turn on. The HDD seems to be working because its light blinks once as soon as I try to turn it on.
    I've tried:
    1. Swapping memory card slots
    2. Removing the memory cards and turning on (motherboard does not beep, is that a signal that something's wrong with the motherboard?)
    3. Reseting the EC
However, nothing seems to work. Can't send it to a MSI repair shop because I am currently living in Brazil and apparently there's no MSI official repairer here.
Any ideas on how to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

Try to remove all the storage devices and see if you can enter the BIOS menu.
If not, then it's likely that sending it to the service center will be your only hope.

  • Hp TS 300-1017 starts but won't enter W/7

    Hi.
It starts then the screen freezes, won't enter Windows 7.
    Safe mode does the same.
I bought an extended warranty that expired Feb 2012. However, I've been told that HP recognizes this is a heat-related video chip problem common to all-in-ones.
Because of this, HP has extended warranties to cover this situation.
If so, how do I go about getting  it fixed?
    Thanks, Tom, Burbank, CA

    Hello Trj57:
Another HP Support Assisant update troubles. Let the fun began. I hope you have your recovery disk available because this is the only fix for this issue ok.  Do not worry it caused by the new released updadate.  Your System K driver is damaged ok. If you do not have your recover disk you can puchased a set from HP parts store o.k.  Yes you can operate in safe mode for a while before your whole system crashes if need to. As  you turn on your computer tap f-8 key this will put you in safe mode select safe mode with net working. Back up what files you can. When you are ready to do a factory restore turn on your computer and now tap f-12 key and insert recovery 1 disk choose to do a factory restore from disk.  You do not want to do it from D drive because that recovery will only last a few day before it crashes again. Do not do a Microsoft system restore it fails also and do not try to delete HP Support Assisant because it then will crash your computer and you will not be able to turn on windows on period. Only with f-8 key in safe mode with alot attemps made before hand. This is because HP Support Assisant new version is bad for our HP Touchsmart 600 and 300 series computers. I have had Iyogie's expert technicians work on my HP Touchsmart 600-1050 same computer as yours just a bigger screen except that I know what exactly happened because just as it updated I experinced the same issue as you have now. They where able to fix the damaged files and drivers except for the system k driver witch has to to do with start up. The only way to fix that driver is by doing a factory restore. Ounce you have completed the factory recovery open up HP Support Assisant and on bottom left side you will see a lock washer looking icon click on it. Change it to never update. This will prevent your computer from down loading it again.  There are alot of same issues being posted now. Just in different format. Let us know if you are still having troubles. Thank you frrw.

  • Imac os wont start but windows bootcamp still working fine

    Hi everyone,
My imac is around 4 years old and has been running both windows bootcamp and os x snow leopard for at least 3 years without any problems. My default operating system is mac and when I tried to turn it on this morning it gets stuck on the white screen with the grey apple icon and the loading icon spinning. Also a bar appears below this that I have never seen before.
I have tried opening the mac in recovery mode but it does not respond and goes to the same logo screen.
I have tried holding the 'D' key down while the mac comes on and doing the apple hardware test but once the window pops up it does not complete the probing and appears to freeze just before its completion.
I have also tried booting in safemode but the script stops at these commands:
launch tl: Please convert the following to launchd: etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisory.plist
    launch_msg(): socket is not connected
However, the windows bootcamp is working fine and I can access my mac files from there.
Also worth mentioning is that it is not a grey screen that appears on start up it is just the normal apple icon screen.
Tried both smc and pram resets but nothing changed.
Also when I the mac holding alt both the mac hd and windows disc are visible but obviously same problem happens when I click on mac from there.
Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks.

If you use the first Grey Disk and the 'C' key, can you boot into OSX and then your disks can be inspected.

  • IMac will turn on, but won't boot unless I wait until the next day

I've searched this forum, but can't seem to pinpoint my problem. I received this iMac for my office last March, and everything worked just fine. Lately, for the past 3-4 months, I can turn it on in the morning and everything runs fine.
I turn it off in the middle of the workday, thinking I won't need to use it for the rest of the day.
Of course, something comes up, and I need to turn it back on. When I press the button to turn it back on, nothing happens. Just a black screen and if it's quiet enough, I can hear the hard drive running.
It won't boot until I come back the next morning, almost as if I'm giving it time to cool off.
    Any ideas?

Turn off Energy Saver and use Screen Saver instead. Energy Saver is sensitive to certain non-Apple USB devices and may cause such a problem.
