IMac white screen at shut down?

Tried to turn off my iMac and I just get the white screen forever until I force shut down. Firefox freezes often, as does the Finder. This started randomly. Mavericks is not downloaded. Hard drive is only half full, performed a scan and hard drive is okay. No issues on start up. Problem seems to be worse after using the computer for longer periods of time. Computer just turned two years old. All other updates besides Mavericks performed. Thoughts on what the problem could be? Thanks!

Just an added not--I attempted to download Mavericks to update my software and I also tried to download the newest version of Flash and neither will install after downloading.

My MacBook pro is stuck on white screen after shut down. Now, neither this is turn on nor turn off.

You should be able to turn off your MBP by pressing the power button down continously for about 5-10 sec. When you reboot it you are going to want to enter into a terminal screen. Hopefully the following YouTube video helps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKOX72xNmbo

  • White screen on shutting down

I have an i7 iMac and when i shut down the screen goes white with the spinning wheel in the middle and stays there, not completing the shut down procedure.  This remains indefinitely.  I have left it for hours and come back with it still like this.  I then have to press the on/off button on the rear to properly shut down.  I have installed Lion but it happened before this installation.
    Any ideas?

Try resetting the PRAM. Shutdown, startup holding down Option-CMD-P-R together at the startup chime, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.

I have had the same problem, and connected it to a problem with Western Digital HD software.  I use an external WD HD for time machine purposes.
I then uninstalled all the HD software, and it now seems everything works fine.  You may try this. Ref this article:

  • McBook Pro Mac OS X 10.7.4 stuck on the white screen on shut down.

I would appreciate help on this.
When choosing to shut down my MacBook Pro it closes everything and then gets stuck on the white screen. Unless I press continuously the on button it just stays there...
Any ideas what the problem might be?

Just wanted to add my own insight to this thread. I do have the same issue.
    - I'm using a Macbook Pro 2011
    - I'm using OSX Lion with full disk encryption (That's FileVault I think)
    - I'm using Paralles Desktop Build 7.0.15094
    - I'm using alot of different development USB peripherals (routed to a Windows 7 virtual machine)
    - The installation of the 10.7.4 might not have completed 100% ... it was also stuck ( can't remember if it was re-booting or if progress bar never reached 100% ) for several hours (I basically let computer do whatever it needed to do overnight, I figure it might have to re-encrypt a large (if not all ) part of the disk ) so the next morning I simply shut it off.

  • N6233 start,PIN code,white screen and shuts down i...

    Hello,
My N6233 after switching on and entering PIN shows only white screen with battery icon and shuts down automatically after a few seconds. Would it be possible to repair it by upgrading FW by using NSU or some another SW ?
    Thanks,
    Lubo

Have you tried removing the sim card and memory card then trying to switch it on?
If it still doesn't work then your only option is to take it to a nokia care point. You cannot use the NSU if the phone cannot boot up properly.
If it works without the sim and memory card let us know.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • My 27" Imac (A1312/EMC2390) keeps shutting down unexpectedly with no warning or "screen of death". I replaced the power supply, reset the SMC, and zapped the PRAM, but the problem continues. Can anyone help me?

My 27" Imac (A1312/EMC2390) keeps shutting down unexpectedly with no warning or "screen of death". So far I reset the SMC, and zapped the PRAM. I even replaced the power supply but the problem continues. My error and system logs seem unhelpful too. Can anyone help me out?

You can get a shutdown like that if the computer gets too hot. Make sure the air intakes on the bottom and the exhaust vent on the top are clean and are not blocked by something in your workspace like papers or the back of the computer being too close to part of the furniture. You need a good six inches (15cm) of clearance between the exhaust slot and other objects or surfaces.
Anti-virus/internet security software, especially the "pay for" kinds, can increase operating temps. So can third-party backup software furnished with many "name-brand" external hard drives.
Fan motors and/or temperature sensors can fail. If you have the original grey disks that shipped with your iMac, find the on that has Apple Hardware Test (AHT) and run it. If you have a failed heat sensor or fan motor, it will detect it with an error code containing "SNS" if it's a bad sensor or "MOT" if its a bad fan motor.

  • IMac restarts instead of shutting down

    Hello,
I have a 2009 iMac 24" running 10.6.2. When I select shutdown from the shutdown menu it asks if I want to shutdown and then after selecting yes it starts the shutdown process. After shutting down it immediately restarts. When selecting shutdown from the login screen, it shuts down correctly.
    -I've zapped my PRAM
    -I did a SMC reset
-I've unselected restart after power failure
-I have a wireless USB mouse connected
    -I have Apple's wireless keyboard
    Any thoughts?
    Help is much appreciated

If it does not happen in the new account (you should try it a few times to make sure), then the cause is usually one of two things, and there is probably not anything wrong with the overall system.
First is a background process that runs in your normal account. Check System Preferences Accounts pane +Login Items+ tab. Remove anything there that you no longer need to have running. Then, with what's left, remove one at a time and test to see if it makes a difference; make sure you note what you removed (and where it is located) so that you can put it back if it was not the cause.
Second are user preference settings. In this case, this is a bit harder to trouble-shoot, because I can't think of any particular user preference file that would make a Mac restart instead of shut down.
If the problem does not happen in a new account, and you can't determine the exact cause, one thing you could do is create a new user account for ongoing permanent use, and transfer your user data from your current account to the new account. Eventually, once everything is working fine, abandon your current account.

  • IMac G5 Won't Shut Down

For about the last month or so, my iMac will not properly shut down. I do everything as I have done for the last 2 years but instead of the screen turning blue before shutting down, a "grey-tinted" screen comes down over the wallpaper. There is then a black box in the middle that, in multiple languages, instructs me to hold down the power button in order to shut down the computer. This happens probably 80% of the time. Not only cannot this not be good but it's also pretty annoying because the computer will make a loud noise (sounds like the fan?) after a couple minutes if I don't catch it right away.
What is causing this? How can I fix this? Thanks in advance for your help ...

Use "your model iMac" firmware for starters as your search keywwords.
If you don't know which model or generation you have see Kmowledge Base Articles:

You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by going to 'My Settings' which is located in the column on the right under your name, and filling in the information asked for.
    Thank you
You can also check for firmware info HERE. I checked the link this time.

  • HT3964 1st problem was IMac running slow. Shut down and unplugged several times with each time reboot being worse. Now, unplug reboot and eventually wallpaper background comes up but there are no icons?

1st problem was IMac running slow.  Shut down and unplugged several times with no correction.  Eventually, shut down, unplug and reboot resulted in wallpaper background eventually coming on screen but no icons.  Nothing after that.

Kurt, do you know which exact iMac this is?
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Does it do better if allowed to cool off for a couple of hours?
What do you see if you hold Option or alt key at bootup?
Does it boot from the install disc holding c key at bootup?

  • Screen not shutting down

I have my iMac set to automatically shut down and start up at specifical times each day. Recently, if I've decided to shut things down early by selecting Shut Down from the menu. The Finder quits, but the screen remains active. It does not completely shut down. I need to "force" the screen shut down with the power button.
I have a Seagate eternal HD connected which i had issues with in the past. I had initially had my computer set to save energy with putting HD to sleep, etc.. The Seagate Drive would not come back on. Their tech people informed me the Seagate was slow to re-boot, and that was the issue. I since, change my computer settings and thave not had an issue with the External.
I a, however wandering if that has any relationship to what I previously discribed.
    Any suggestions, please.
    Thanks

  • My ipad showed a blue screen and shut down.

My ipad showed a blue screen and shut down.  I cannot restart it.  A soft restart did not work.  I tried connecting to iTunes on the PC but it did not detect the device

Did you try resetting the iPad?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears- let go of the buttons.
If that doesn't do anything, try this for the issue with iTunes not seeing the iPad.

  • IPad turned into blue screen then shut down how to fix?

iPad turned into blue screen then shut down how to fix I cannot play games..

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, restore your iPad using iTunes or iCloud >  iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
