  • IMac white screen after Lion system install

Two days ago, iMac froze with the dreaded white screen. Unplugged all external hardware.  Restart with "Command R", fixed all permissions and verified the disk. Cold start locked at white screen. Reinstalled Lion. After the reinstall the system did restart on its own and everything looked normal. Shut down and did a cold restart and the white screen is back. Shut down and cold start with "Command R" very long process but Utilities finally opened. But what to do next?
This iMac has had the recalled Seagate hard drive replaced by Apple, although some years ago.
    Thanks for your thoughts, Bill

    Page 3,
After writing the above I went in and pressed the ON/OFF button, it went black and shut down. Waited 10 seconds and pressed the ON/OFF button and instantly my desktop and all folders were back. Everything looks normal.
Now each time I have verified permissions there has been a file that can not be fixed. A "SUID ..... " file. Have to do with anything?
I am going to shut her down one more time wait the 10 seconds and Start.... locked in white screen.
Restart with "Command R", and now it appears hung up on the Apple and spinner for a very long time and Utilities finally opened. Although it will take some time before it loads enough to make things selectable. When that happens I will do a Restart from the pull down Apple menu and see what happens.
Looks more and more like my Authorized Apple Store is about to get a visit.

  • My late '09 iMac white screen of death- help

Hello to the community.....not happy today with my mac.  My name is denyason, from the uk.
    It's a 27 " quad core 2.66 ghz intel i5
                    8gb 1066mhz ddr3
                    2tb hard drive
It came with no cd and my SuperDrive doesn't work.
I have the latest updates with Os lion as of 9th February 2012.
Turned on mac- stuck on white apple logo screen with spinning gear. So I entered safe mode- pressed shift and load bar springs up on apple logo screen.......does about a quarter then it disappears and nothing happens- stuck with the spinning gear again.  This is very disappointing considering I paid nearly 2 grand for this feb 2010.  Only 2 years old.  What do I do.  I only have an 1 tb external hd for backup.  If one can't even get to safe mode what do they do?  Searches say install cd but I didn't get one with mine?
Help would be great but luckily I recently got an iPad so at least I can use the web.

Is there anyone that can help me?  I have tried Resseting the nvram/pram and nothing.  Tried shift-command-v and it just stops after a string of text?

My Ipod 3rd generation wont turn off and is showing a blank white screen someone please help! xx

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My iMac is giving me a blank white screen at startup help

I just installed the sims 3 on my iMac and after the installation it kept giving me the spinning wheel so I restarted it. Once it restarted it just gave me a blank white screen for thirty minutes so I restarted it and held the option key so I could go into the recovery HD and repair the disk but still blank white screen. Now I've run out of ideas.

    Brendan,
I would post this in the iMac forum for a quicker reply.

  • Inherited iMac, White screen of death, etc...

Hello, Fairly new to the world of mac.
    I have been given a iMac 20" G5 a M9250LL/A...
Looks in good condition, powers up ok. But I get a white screen with a flashing mac folder icon.
Tried resetting the Navram, epram and everything else under the sun...
I installed a new hard drive, a 500GB western digital one. Power up and it still doesn't see it.
I then held down the option key, hopefully it would see it?. no chance...
Boots in Open firmware ok and see's hard drive, etc...
So I tried connecting via a firewire cable from a friends macbook and success, reformatted the drive, installed Snow Leopard and nothing.
nada, zip... starts up on the macbook just fine.
Someone told me that I need to install Tiger first?.. that true?
I've spent a few days trying all kinds of things I've found on youtube and google and drawing a blank here...
Would anyone be able to offer some advice? - I'm a bit confused as I've tried everything!!
Would love to get this machine working, I rather not have to take it to the dump and have to get a 2nd hand windows machine off ebay!!
    HELP!!

    Hello, Just an update..
Thanks to rccharles and michelpm for your reply's they were very helful. Thank you!
I'm a great believer in recycling and upcycling and it would be an awful shame to see something heading for the dump that would probably only need a few new capacitors for couple of quid...
It was an inherited machine (probably for good reason) and 5 1000uF caps were bad (bulging) TBH, I had nothing to loose and I have a old PC laptop to use should I do a hideous job. Figured I just go for it, besides, it kept me busy between a few shifts at work.
The only electronics I did at school was in the Physics lab and even then, I wasn't really paying much attention. But I'm a believer that anyone can do anything, if they set their mind to it... just take your time and prepare
    1) So I got myself onto youtube watched some videos on soldering.
Some good, some hopelessly boring others, mildly disturbing..
    2) I bought a soldering kit off ebay for £8 which came with a very helful guide, entitled:
"The basics of Electronics Soldering and Desoldering Guide" by Alan Winstanley.
    3) Ordered the capacitor kit off ebay for £8
    4) Borrowed a DVD of Leopard.
made a cup of tea, deep breath and then went about desoldering and soldering in the new caps.
20 min job and then reverse of removal, press the power button and a few nervous seconds and it was up and running and installing off the hard drive.
So, basically, what I'm saying is don't junk your machine for the sake of a couple of capacitors.
If I can do it, you definately can!
    Total spend:
    iMac                       £0.00
    Capacitor kit            £8.00
    500Gb Hard Drive   £18.00
    Bluetooth Card         £5.00
    Soldering Iron kit      £8.00
    Total:                      £39
Pretty sure you could'nt buy a working iMac for under £40, so I think I did pretty well, all things considered.
    This fixed:
    Hard Drive not being recognised
    Fan sounding like a Hoover
    White screen of D E A T H
    Found a useful website here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_G5_20%22_Model_A1076
If you are in the situation I was in and had nothing to loose, give it a shot, not only will you learn something, but you'll get the satisfaction of repairing it and breathing new life into an old device.
    Cheers!

  • 24" iMac - white screen - with a file folder in the centre that has a '?'

When I awakened my iMac, I wished to open iPhoto but when I clicked on it in the dock a screen came down from the top darkening the screen and superimposed on it was a message telling me to shut down. However, when I rebooted all I got was a white screen and after a minute a grey file folder bearing a query mark (?) appeared. This iMac has only been used a couple of weeks since having its hard drive replaced and now this ! What does the file folder represent ? Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I was able to reboot successfully after I disconnected the power cable, waited for 30 seconds, and then reconnected the cable. (Page 42 of Everything Mac.)

  • Curve 9300 White screen problem, PLEASE HELP!

Hi guys, so basically, I've been having this problem for a little while now of which my phone freezes at a random stage, white screens with the red LED light ON and reboots itself. I have tried several things from this forum so far.
I have backed up the phone on desktop manager
I have re-installed the OS twice now, (downgrading OS's)
I tried to use the phone without the memory card or SIM in, I used an app called 'kik' for a little while, but eventually as suspected it froze, white screened and the issue persisted.
I can easily text one person on the phone, but as soon as I receive a text as I'm typing it freezes the phone, white screens, reboots. Back to square one.
Something you may need to know is that a while ago, I was in a storm, the phone did get slightly wet, and it did actually stop working. I placed it in a tub of rice for the night, and hey presto it worked again, was happy with that, but from just about a few days after it was working fine, it started doing this.
Is it the water damage creating this problem, if so would a repair store be able to fix this problem for me?
The phone is in a tub of rice again right now, doubt it'll make a difference though.
YOUR FEEDBACK WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANK YOU!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
While the rice trick is good, only waiting 8 hours ("for the night") is dangerous...typically, waiting 5 days in the rice before applying any power is needed, and even then there are no guarantees. Applying power to your BB between it getting wet and doing this process reduces the chances of success. Further, the only thing predictable about moisture intrusion into a BB (indeed, any electronic device) is that the results will be unpredictable. I've seen some come back up right away and be fine. I've seen others never work at all. I've seen still others run for a bit, and then die later. And every thing in between.
From what you describe, I would deduce that the 24 hours in the rice was not long enough, and corrosion continued internally, exacerbated by the application of power, eventually resulting in complete failure.
As for if anyone can fix it...at an internet distance, that is impossible to say. Only in-hand evaluation by a qualified BB hardware technician can provide you with a proper evaluation and estimate.
    Good luck!

  • IMac white screen of death

When I start up my iMac, I hear the start-up sound and see the white screen, followed by two beeps, then three beeps repeatedly. It will not respond to anything.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    There's a RAM problem. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1547

  • The infamous white screen - can you help?

A friend edited a video with Final Cut Pro and then exported to Quicktime format so that I could watch it on my laptop. But when I play it in Quicktime, I can hear the sound but only see a white screen. When I double click the file, Quicktime opens and up pops a message:
"Some necessary Quicktime software is missing. etc etc"
But once I am taken to the Apple site, I have no idea which of those codecs I need to download.
If it helps, the clip I'm trying to watch is 1920x1080 and under 'codecs', the following are listed - HDV 1080i50, Integer (Little Endian), Timecode.
Any advice as to how I can watch this clip in Quicktime?
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Quicktime 7.1.6

The FCP export used video codecs not supported outside that app. Meant for one FCP user to another.
They should export using H.264 Video codec so any version 7 user could view the file in QuickTime.

  • I have iTunes U on my iPad for school. I won't open up any power points when it does it's just a white screen. Please help. I need it for school

I have iTunes U on my iPad mini. It won't open any power points on it and when I do it's just a white screen. This just started happening about an hour ago. I need this for school so please help

I have the same problem with the store.  I click the link, and it looks like the store is loading.  However, all I get is a white screen.
Also, my new Iphone 4s will only get to "step 2 of 5, backing up iphone."  I left the phone connected to the computer all night, and when I woke up, it was still at the same spot, with no progress made.
I've uninstalled, everything from apple, rebooted the computer, and then re-installed the latest itunes.  Still nothing.

  • All I see is a white screen... (help please)

I got my ipod nano this october and it worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. I turned my ipod on and it shut down and when I turned it back on again all I got was a simple white screen, nothing else. It's been doing that for about three weeks now. I've tried EVERYTHING The 5 R's everthing, nothing seems to work. I even just let it sit and not be used for a week and it still hasn't worked. It's really angering me. My brother did not pay the money for an ipod for me that doesn't work. Somebody PLEASE, help me.

    See this.
iPod 5th gen (with video) shows blank or white screen.
It's not for the nano but worth a try.
If none of the above help, then it may be an issue that requires service.
You can arrange online service here.

Or if an Apple store is near you, take it there and have them check your iPod.
