IMac - why do I have a "?" mark on the dock

I have a "?" on my dock.  When the curser is over it I can see it says HP Utilities.  Is there a problem with this, or should I just dispose of it.

if you pinned some hp utils to the dock and later on deleted it or if some hp update changed the name of the binary then the pinn to the dock will be a pinn to something which no longer exist then it would show a ?

  • I have ? marks on the dock on my eMac now ++

    Hi,
My eMac had been running a bit slow but also my keyboard may odd sounds (clicking) and typed very slow and I could not open folders or even .pdf files on my desk top, I did make adjustments under System preferences under keyboard and mouse (delay etc) some how that got corrupted and that seems to have corrected it
    My eMac specs=
(eMac 1.25 ghz 1GB ram 80GB HD (all stock from Apple Education Store) and running
    OSX 10.3.9)
I ran Disk Warrior , no change and no major issues reported (other than may have been repaired) , I ran applejack (twice)ran Disk utility to verify and then repair permissions and then applejack AUTO for a deeper run (?thats when the ? marks on the dock showed up (when You move the mouse over the ? mark it identifies what it is and when you hold the mouse down over the ? mark it says on all three of their names and to look in finder(may not be the exact term)The ? mark items are WMV player (found it using file find) , other two are IDVD and iMovie HD (using file find I could not locate as a application itself, most (using DVD and Movie under two file find (individual) search's (results= were
in the library as pkg or mpkg , I am running Omni Disk Warrior now to see if the show up, I did locate DVD player (my eMac has a CD-RW and DVD reader not a super-drive so I can not burn DVD's but baffled as to what is transpiring (I have the Ilife install install disks if needed that came with the eMac and the Operating system disks and the utility disks that came either with the eMac or with the Apple Care that I purchased. (*Note this eMac has a replaced logic board
it did fail (under warranty) and was in that serial number , time frame where the boards failed regularly, mine just went black screen one day, sure I would like a new computer but I am not in the market nor $$ ready (I hope they cut the Imac prices down but thats wishful thinking) (never know)
    * One Thought (though I did not make these applications/files such is ? invisible files (got that way some how? ) One other thing is in the very beginning fairly large symbols would show up on the screen at random (one frequent one looked like
a square root symbol or a division like symbol (though I was not hitting any odd combo of keys etc nor do I see anything like them on the eMac keyboard
has any one had this issue? or parts of it..ANY input would be greatly apprecited
    Thanks

    Hi,
(I guess I could have edited my original post but I found this (where else but Help on the toolbar and used "dock question" as my search tearm and this came back (as the first on the list)
The Dock contains a question mark icon (this was the title) and below the answer (only thing (unless I am misinterpreting the answer) is I did not delete the applications) and I am he sole user of this computer, we have 3 Mac's and one HP PC in the house on a network)
Omni Disk Sweaper did not find Imovie HD or IDVD (fragments yes and a .pkg (? installer
    but in library/receipts)
I can do below but I need to reinstall fro the Ilife desk or ? use Subrasoft File Salvage which we have but ? not sure if the license is expired etc.
If you delete an application or document that has an icon in the Dock, the
Dock icon changes to a question mark.
To remove the question mark icon:
    Drag it from the Dock.
To add a new item to the Dock, locate the item and drag its icon to the
    Dock.
    Thanks

  • Why do I have question marks in the finder window header?

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Lion I've noticed a large question mark in the finder window header. There is a smaller one beneath it, and they're both located just to the left of the search window.

Can you do a screenshot please?
Also may just grag and drop them outside the finder window.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

  • Why do I have 2 versions of the program pages on my mac after the update?

Why do I have 2 versions of the program pages on my mac after the update?

Do you have both the old and the new version? If so, you must have purchased Pages via the retail DVD (iWork) - the installer does not update in this case, but installs a brand new version separately giving you the choice of which one you want to use.

  • Why is there a question mark in the Finder window?

Why is there a question mark in the finder window that looks like this.     When I click the question mark in displays this message.

Because the item there has been moved from its original location or deleted (there's none in that location by default), or something made the Finder think there was an item there. In either case, the question mark can be removed by control-clicking it and choosing Remove Item, or by command-clicking it and dragging it out of the window.

  • I am about to buy the new iMac, but do I have to buy all the software I have in my old one, like Aperture, pages, etc.?

I am about to buy the new iMac, but do I have to buy all the software I have in my old one, like Aperture, pages, etc.?

No, you don't. If you got it from the Mac App Store, log into it with the same Apple ID and redownload it for free. If you got it from CDs or DVDs, reinstall it from those; having the DVD version of a program does not get you a free download of it from the Mac App Store.

  • Why is there a question mark on the Startup Disc folder in System Preferences?

Why is there a question mark on the Startup Disc folder in System Preferences?
    Thanks in advance.

Because there's a permissions issue with the application, or it's been moved somewhere which isn't accessible to the second user account, or its entry in the Dock plist on the second account is corrupt, in which case it needs to be located in the Applications folder and dragged to the Dock.

  • Hi Forum, can u please help? iRecently bought a mac pro & my garageband 11 was working fine but now it's showing a question mark in the dock but it won't open. I think it may have been accidentally trashed. I've searched the trash & spotlighted. What now?

Hi Forum, can u please help? iRecently bought a macbook pro and garageband 11 was working fine but now it's showing a question mark in the dock and it won't open. I think it may have been accidentally trashed. I've searched the trash and spotlighted but don't know what to do next. Any ideas? Thanks.

How  did you install GarageBand on your Mac? Did it come preinstalled with the other iLife applications?
If your MacOS supports the AppStore, you should be able to redownload GarageBand from the AppStore, see this support Article: OS X: About OS X Recovery on how to download again:
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • IMac with Lion. I have an icon on the dock for Fluenz software but it has a white circle around it with a white slash through it (like the international "no" sign).  What does the circle mean?

I have an iMac using Lion. I have an icon on the dock for Fluenz software but it has a white circle around it with a white slash through it (like the international "no" sign).  What does the circle mean?  The Fluenz software seems to work ok.

Checkout the software vendor's website for updates:
    http://fluenz.com/commons/beta-forum/posts/free-lion-upgrade-fluenz-updates-page
Your only other option is to boot from an OS X 10.6 system.
    Hope the link helps.

  • Minor problem - I have 4 folders in the dock, but when I press on the icons for two of them, there is no choice of "display as folder" or "options". Can somebody tell me why not? Thanks!

I have four folders in the dock. Two are fine. The other two of them will not allow me to press on the stack's icons to view the commands "Display as Folder" or "Options". Can somebody help me out with this minor problem?
    Thanks!

Are you right - clicking (control-clicking) them? The following should appear if you do that, and allow you to change the folder's appearance in the Dock:

  • Not able to get rid of a Question mark in the Dock

A friend got stuck with a Question Mark in the Dock of his 4 year old iMac that was linked to an app not compatible anymore with his latest 10.8.2 version ( guess it was a Power PC app, before Mountain Lion, he was still on Leopard ). He apparently deleted the app and some dependencies manually ( instead of using App Cleaner & Co. ) and now whenever he is hovering over that Question Mark, even before being even able to pull it out from the Dock, the screen flashes up white and the Finder resets.
Is there a way to access the Dock through an element of his user library to get rid of that Mark, or even through a Terminal command ( not that I like to delve in there, but Terminal commands have helped me personally quite often ) ?
Does the Dock have a dedicated place in the Library's User Folder ? Couldn't find anything on my own Mac.
    Thanks for any clue ....

Right clicking on it is not even an option, just hovering over it seems to induce a "nuclear" reset of the whole desktop and graphic card on the iMac.
Have meanwhile found a possible solution by erasing the dock preference file in the user/library/preferences folder to reset the dock to it's default state. Will try this out through a Skype conversation with that Buddy.

  • How to remove the question mark from the dock

How do I remove the question mark from the dock.  Nothing I tried works.

    What have you tried?
What happens when you click on it?  Does a menu appear?
Would you provide a screen shot (SHIFT COMMAND 4).
    Ciao.

  • Why my mac air don't support the dock library version 1.0, if this needs the system mac os x 10.5 or higher, and my is os x 10.7.5?

Why my mac air don't support the dock library version 1.0, if this needs the system mac os x 10.5 or higher, and my is os x 10.7.5?

For Snow Leopard you require version 2.1.4. However AFAIK you can't buy this from Apple any more: the current version requires Lion 10.7.5 at minimum.
Amazon are offering v.2.1.1 in the UK - this is not compatible with Snow Leopard either but you should be able to apply an upgrade to 2.1.4. -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL913
I can't guarantee this will work. You may be able to get advice in the Aperture forum.
Your only other alternative is to upgrade your Mac to Lion 10.7.5 if it us compatible, and buy the current version.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.

  • I have 2 screen and the dock is changing from one screen to another , can I stop it (Mac OS 10.9.1)

Hello , I have 2 screens , and the dock is moving from one to the other screen at any time .
I would like to "paste" it on one screen
    How should I do?
    Thanks for your help

    Hello there, BHDock.
The following Knowledge Base article explains how the Dock works in Mavericks:
OS X: Using multiple displays in Mavericks
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5891
    Working with the Dock
When the Dock is configured to appear at the bottom of your screen, it's available on whichever screen you’re working on. Just move your pointer to the bottom of either display. When the Dock is configured for the left or right position, it appears on the leftmost or rightmost display edge.
The Dock settings are located in System Preferences.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • I updated to Yosemite and now I can't open my YNAB finance app. There is a question mark in the Dock where the App should be and when I hover over the question mark it does say YNAB but I can't open it.

I updated to Yosemite and now I can't open my YNAB finance app. There is a question mark in the Dock where the App should be and when I hover over the question mark it does say YNAB but I can't open it. When I double click on the question mark nothing happens. Has the link to YNAB been broken with the update? Has this happened to anyone else?

    Check the Application folder.
If it is not there, contact YNAB Finance for a OS X Yosemite compatible version of the application.
    Best.
