IMac Wifi Solution

After a few days of Wifi not connecting automatically after waking or startup, even after the 10.7.4 update via Software Update, the 10.7.4 Combo Update solved the problem for me.
I tested it for more than 30 minutes with numerous cycles of shutdown, sleep and restart. So far the wifi connects everytime.
Even if you updated to 10.7.4, reinstall 10.7.4 here to fix the wifi issues >>> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524

Did not fix the problem on my iMac (Mid 2011)

  • IMac Wifi Stops Working

I've had my new 2013 Haswell 27" iMac for 2 days now and have noticed something annoying with my wifi.
Speeds are great using my trusty Linksys wrt-160n router which is only 6 ft away (across a hall so I can't run cable), better than with my old PC. I almost reach my max 30 Mbps connection speeds all the time (about twice as fast as my old PC with wifi dongle).
But, I notice that if I haven't used my computer for a few hours, when I relogin, even though wifi still says connected to my router, I get no internet access. Nothing with safari, mac mail, or any other internet access. I have to turn wifi off then back on again, then it's fine.
Router has no issue with my ipod or PC when I used it for 2 years.
I wonder if something is "sleeping" in the OS but not waking up properly? I tried manually turning the computer to "sleep" for a bit and it woke up fine and still a connection.

    Thanks for your reply.
I already use a specific channel that I've used for 2 years in this building (channel 4). That gets me the best signal by far and saturates my bandwidth.
So, my connection doesn't "drop" or get lost when sitting idle for a few hours, it says it's still connected to my router, but there is just no data going through. Safari just sits there trying to load a page, same with Mac Mail, no network activity.
So, say if I've been out for a few hours, or when I go to bed, when I come back to my iMac, wifi shows full bars and connected to my router but no wireless activity. I have to turn wifi off then back on. It's like something gets stuck.
For the heck of it I manually put my iMac into SLEEP mode for a bit to see if that affected anything (had read about people with iMacs having issue with SLEEP mode) but no, everything was fine when I did this.

  • Mid 2010 iMac Wifi signal strength issue

I am having issues maintaining a robust Wifi signal on my 21.5 inch 2010 iMac with 10.6.5 installed.
my symptoms are very similar to what is described in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2596933&tstart=0
in addition to that I am experiencing the following symptoms:
can't print to HP wireless printer
remote app for iphone doesn't find the iMac
mobile mouse remote app doesn't find the iMac
can't ping the iMac from Windows laptops on the same subnet or from the router itself
accumulation of send and receive errors in Network Utility
these symptoms occur after the machine has been connected to wifi for 30 minutes or so. Turning off Airport and turning it back on temporarily fixes the issue. the Mac firewall is turned off.
as reported in the post mentioned above, signal strength for my Windows laptops and other devices is consistently -25 but the iMac signal strength fluctuates wildly.
One more troubleshooting step that I have taken is to install Windows 7 on a boot camp partition to rule out the iMac hardware and physical location as the issue. While booted into Windows the iMac did not exhibit any of the above symptoms and held a steady -25 strength signal.
Lastly I am using a TrendNet Wireless N Access Point but have also tried an Apple Extreme and Express (both N). I've tried 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz on various channels. I've even tried dialing down to G mode.
I've read other posts about DNS settings, Static instead of DHCP addressing, etc. and none of these has solved this issue.
    Thoughts anybody? TIA

Update concerning additional troubleshooting steps that I have taken.
    1) did a clean install of OS 10.6.3 onto an external drive and managed to replicate the issue....so that rules out apps, preference files, etc.
    2) managed to get a little bit more stability by setting up an Airport Express in 5Ghz mode with Interference Robustness turned on and the multicast rate set at 9Mbps....of course ios devices don't do 5Ghz so I still have to run another AP...so not an acceptable solution.
What else do I need to do to prove that it's a Mac OS software issue?

  • New iMac wifi slow on Airport network, not on Fastweb

I just replaced our old iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz, Airport Extreme Card 802.11 a/b/g/n - OS 10.6.8) a new refurbished iMac 27-inch (late 2012) (OS 10.8.4).  The new computer works great, except with wifi - it is painfully slow on our Airport network, even though the old iMac still runs perfectly fast on that network.
We have two wifi networks in our house (in Rome, Italy).  Our internet comes in through the Italian company Fastweb, and its wireless router limits us to only 3 devices.  Both computers have fast internet connectivity when we hook up one (or both) to our Fastweb network (802.11g).  But that's not a good long-term solution because we need our main computer to talk wirelessly with other devices (like our printer and speakers running off an Airport Express booster).
So for the last three years we have also had an Airport base station (802.11n) based off the Fastweb network. We use the Airport network to connect most of our devices (including iMac, MacBooks, printer, iPads, iPhones, and two Airport Extremes -- one for speakers in the next room, and another to boost the signal throughout the house).  For some reason, the new iMac is painfully slow when it connects to our Airport network -- it can take 2 minutes to load a web page on the Airport network, which takes 2 seconds to load on the Fastweb network.  I would've thought that the problem lay with our Airport network, except that it's still plenty fast with our other computers.  The only problem seems to be the new iMac talking to the Airport network.
Could the problem lie with the Airport Extreme card in the new iMac?  It is a refurbished machine, not new.  Should I just be taking the machine into the nearest Apple Store?  We did buy AppleCare . . . .
Thanks very much for any ideas!

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.5 causes iMac wifi hub problems

I have used my iMac's Airport feature to temporarily make my iMac a WiFi hub for our iPad for several months.
It worked like a charm. We'd just click the Airport icon to turn it on when we needed it and then turn Airport off when we were done with the iPad.
But with 10.6.5, the Sharing window under Internet & Wireless within System Preferences changed a lot and it appears that the simple functionality of pre 10.6.5 is gone.
Now, when we click the icon to turn Airport on, Airport attempts to connect to other WiFi networks that it detects (mostly my neighbors' routers) instead of becoming a WiFi hub. In order to stop it searching for WiFi networks and become a WiFi hub, I have to go into System Preferences -> Internet & Wireless -> Sharing, highlight "Internet Sharing" and uncheck the box, recheck the box, answer the prompts and THEN Airport will begin to broadcast a wifi signal and stop trying to detect other available WiFi networks.
Once I perform these steps, I can then turn WiFi on and off as before, until I reboot.
After each reboot, I have to go through the same procedure again (a procedure which is beyond my wife, who is the main user of the feature).
I know many people will say "get a router", but the Airport WiFi broadcast option was a great little feature for providing a temporary WiFi hub for occasional use.
I spent quite some time with Apple support on this issue, without finding a better solution.
    Any thoughts?

No scripts were needed before 10.6.5 and non are needed now.
You just go into Preferences -> Internet & Wireless -> Sharing
In 10.6.5, just highlight Internet Sharing and under "Share your connection from" select "Ethernet" and under "To computers using" select Airport.
The "look" of the Sharing window within Preferences looks VERY different in 10.6.5. But the choices are essentially the same.
But, as I posted, the functionality has become more awkward.

  • Are there any new imac wifi connectivity fixes?

I've tried all the fixes...new networks, renewed DHCP lease, etc
    somebody help!

Have you changed the wifi channel on the router? It's worked for some.
Here's a catch-all of some things that have helped some people. It sounds like you've tried a few of them, but the links may offer other ideas - in no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion:

  • IMac wifi problems

My apologies for the duplicate, but would be great if someone could help me with this (was originally posted in Mountain Lion forum):
    Hi,
Got an interesting problem here...my home network is powered by 2 Airport Extremes and I have a few Macs and numerous iDevices.  Connection is dsl and not the best in the world meaning I get short timeouts from time to time where I lose internet and it will come back after a minute or two.  My problem is with my iMac (all latest updates) if I lose internet it will not reconnect unless I off my wifi and then turn it back on.  I can hold my iPhone and confirm internet is back to working after a minute of losing it but even after an hour my iMac will not reconnect unless I do the off/on thing...
Also something interesting...this happened today while I was working on my computer and I received a popup saying I had lost connection to the hard drive plugged into my Airport Extreme (I did lose dsl for about a minute during this time).  So on my iMac it's like the internet and my network go hand in hand when they really shouldn't right?  Even without my dsl feed coming through for a minute or two it should not disrupt my home network right?  And note...during these times I do not lose signal to my Airport Extreme according to the radar icon on my iMac it's always steady black...
Hope I explained this right any help would be much appreciated,
    rc

Did the problem start recently or been ongoing for a while?
    How old is the iMac?
Did you just upgrade to 10.8.5?? I would do an SMC reset as there seems to be some people having wireless issues since then.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Also something interesting...this happened today while I was working on my computer and I received a popup saying I had lost connection to the hard drive plugged into my Airport Extreme (I did lose dsl for about a minute during this time).  So on my iMac it's like the internet and my network go hand in hand when they really shouldn't right?
It depends actually on how the setup is done.
If your AE is in bridge and the modem is the one doing router duties.. then it is possible the dsl drop out can have bad effect on the computer.. although it should pick up immediately after it.
Is it possible to swap over to ethernet and see if that has the same issue?
Look at Tesserax doco on wireless issues having to do with sleep and restart.. although yours is different I would still clean out all the old wireless settings and different networks and start over clean.
In fact I would factory reset the main AE that is router or bridge to the ADSL modem.. and start clean with wireless names.. all short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Short names can help a lot.
    See the rest .. here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3411
Try each step and see which is the solution.. if any.
I would also go back to 7.6.1 firmware as neither the latest two 7.6.3 or 7.6.4 help in any way IMHO.

  • IMac - WiFi issue

    Hi Community,
I've searched, googled and found people with the same issues but not a single solution. Here we go:
My wife and I own three Macs, a mid-2007 iMac (2o inch, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), a white MacBook (2008) and a 2011 MacBookPro. We connect to the Internet through a cable modem provided by UPC and an AirPort Express that acts as a router. On both laptops we get a steady 2-2,5 MB/s download speed from various locations. We can roam freely in our apartment the onnection stays great and stable. However on the iMac the connection is choppy at best, barely exceeding 300 kb/s if working it all - I have seen the connection speed go down to 10 kb/s. My MacBookPro right next to works fine. There is one other WiFi network in the house - though running on a different channel
All Macs run OS X 10.7.2., the Airport Express and all of them support the WiFi "n" standard, the Airport Express has been updated to the last firmware version. Is there a known issues/workaround for this. I have even played around with the MTU setting to see if anything changes - which didn't.
This is seriously driving me insane - any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    d00t

There could be many things going on. First thing I'd recommend doing is changing the DNS settings, you are probably using the defaults your ISP provides. If you are not familiar with DNS please read CNET's DNS Article and MacWorld's DNS Troubleshooting. Then change the setting to:
    1. System preferences
    2. Network
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Click DNS tab
    5. Click + sign
    6. Add 208.67.222.222
    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences
Please post back with the results.

Try 'creating a new location', if you haven't already. Also, a few other things to try in this list of suggestions:

  • On the same iMac wifi can be connected in Win7 but not OSX Maverick

    Hi All,
I'm encountering a problem of connecting to wifi on my new iMac. I'm wondering whether anyone in the community has also encountered the same problem.
My iMac is a late 2013 model with 21.7" display bought just 2 weeks again. The OSX installed is Maverick with the latest update. I have also installed Win7 using Bootcamp.
At the beginning, the wifi connection was OK both in OSX and Win7. However, just around 1 week ago, the network connection began to fail in OSX. When logging into the Win7, I can still connect to my router through the wifi and everything is OK. This at least can proves that the wireless adapter in the iMac itself doesn't malfunction and the router works fine. Also all the other devices in my home connects to the same router through wifi has no problem including 2 iPhone5, 1 iPhone4S, 1 iPhone4 and a MBA 2012 model.
However, whenever I switched to the OSX any try to connect to the wifi ends in a failure. The SSID of the network is displayed in the visible network list still but not connectable. By clicking the name and after a while for the iMac to try to connect, a message saying "network cannot be joined" will pop up. Even by running the network diagnosis and specifying a static ip address for the iMac won't help. And I have also tried out some tricks in the community but all seemed not work.
Really appreciate if someone can suggest and help.

  • Cannot use wifi after updating to 6.1.2 on my iPhone 4S WIFI solutions proposed by Apple are not working

    Dear Apple.
I was really happy with my iphone4s, IOS 6.0, great product amazing quality and posibilities BUT.......
I updated from IOS 6.0 to 6.1.1. and the WIFI nightmare started.
I waited for a new update to fix the WIFI problems and I updated my iphone 4s from 6.1.1. to 6.1.2. in order to solve these problems related with WIFI connections.
But IOS 6.1.2. is even worst:
    - WIFI is not working at all. So I cannot download apps greater than 50MB.
    - Battery life is shorter than ever.
    - 3G goes in and out every minute.
    - When you operate the iphone4s you can realize that is hotter than before.
These problems are unnaceptable and inconsistent with a high quality standard product.
You can read a lot of blogs, I am not the only one.
Please give us a solution as soon as possible.
    Best Regards

Try Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if better. If still problem, Restore iPhone with iTunes on your computer. See if better. If still problem, and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send iPhone to Apple for resolution.

  • DVD Studio Pro no longer works with the new iMac. Solutions?

Disc installations in general don't exist anymore and DVD Studio Pro is no longer supported in the new iMac that we have at our office. I used to have Roxio's Toast Titanium as a backup burner, but even that is not supported past mac OS 10.7. Final Cut X has the option to export straight to DVD but the menu options it gives you is so basic it doesn't even look professional. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they are using now to burn a professional looking DVD. Many thanks

    mlaughbaum,
It seems as though you and I are on the same page struggling. Were you able to find any alternatives to DVDSP or any way to continue using it?
    On-Site Video
I'm considering myself lucky... Though I was unable to install either DVDSP and FCP v.6 on my new iMac, they are both still working on my older iMac even though it too is running ML. I believe this is because I upgraded to ML from Leopard with both already installed.
My only suggestion would be to install Leopard (or the OS on which they were working for you), install FCP, DVDSP and compressor, and then upgrade to ML. Seems like a silly solution but I have a feeling it would work. I'm not doing it because it's working on the iMac that's closest to my DVD duplicator. That said, if I had to, I believe that's what I'd try.
Really infuriates me. My business depends on DVD sales and there really isn't another cost effective DVD authoring solution for the mac out there.
I do wish you the best of luck and would love to hear if you come up with a better solution.

  • Overheating iMacs (Hacked Solution)

After 1 year and 4 months my hard drive failed. My Apple service center was full of iMacs for repair, especially the 24 inch model. The problem, I was told, was overheating. I have a new drive installed and have been investigating what solution there is available for this design problem. I buy macs because I want a computer that just works; not a science project like PCs. However, this one has turned into a bit of science project.
The IMac has 3 internal fans, ODD 700rpm, HDD 1200rpm and CPU 1200rpm. The specs on the hard drive are operating temp. up 60 degs. centigrade. The fans can operate faster than their default speeds but, in practice, they never increase in speed from the default. The nature of the enclosure means that temps build up over time, mainly from the heat generated by the screen. I have had my hard drive up to 60 degs. c and there is no increase in fan speed.
Unfortunately there is no solution to this problem from Apple; a firmware upgrade would be nice.
    THE SOLUTION
This is a bit of a hack, but the best option I could find. First download software called temperature monitor
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994
    Then download smcFanControl
    http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/smcFanControl.shtml
Put both of these programs to run on start-up. Go to preferences on Temperature Monitor and set an alert to play a sound. I've set mine to alert me when the hard drive reaches 57 degs. When the alarm goes off I go to smcFanControl and increase the speeds on all 3 fans. By experimentation I think speeds of 900 ODD, 2000 HDD and 1500 CPU are ok. This usually brings the hard drive temp. back down to 50-52 degs. It also cools the power supply which gets up to 82 degs. back down to 65-70 degs. (82 degs. is not a temp. to reliably run a power supply ).
I know this is a bit of hack, and hopefully Apple will take note and issue a firmware upgrade in due course.

+. I think the simplest solution is to not use too many processor hungry apps at one time???+
Actually I think the main causes are the combination of the time the screen is on and the room temperature. At a room temp. below about 24 degs. all is fine, but obviously in Madrid we get a bit of sun and a rise in room temp. of a few degrees sets the alarm bells ringing. Put the iMac in Sleep mode and all the internal temps come down. The 20" model may be less susceptible to this design flaw.
I'm wondering if the big box pc type solution is best. I'd like to get a mac Pro but it is too expensive for me. Is it possible to run Mac osx on a pc box?
It's a real shame that Apple can't step up to the plate and find a solution. The cool designs are all well and good but if the after sales support is crap it may be better to switch to a more responsive company.

  • Using iMac WiFi with iPad

I have an iPad, and connect to the internet through my verizon router. I would like to connect through my iMac's WiFi. I'm not sure how to set this up. Can anyone help me? I'm not a computer pro by any stretch of the imagination, so if you could keep it really simple, I would be a happy camper. Thanks in advance.

    lakeshore wrote:
I used that method for a few weeks when I first got my iPad. I got a really strong signal too. I could walk 150 ft away in the yard, and I was still connected. But it got to be a pain because every time I went to use my iPad, I had to wake my iMac from sleep. Then I found out that Comcast gives away free wifi routers to its cable/internet customers, and that's turned out to be much more convenient, though the iMac's wifi signal definitely goes further than the Netgear's. *I have a lot of security on my Netgear, so if I have visitors who want wifi, instead of going through the trouble of getting their device hooked up to my Netgear wifi, I just turn on the iMac's wifi and they're good to go instantly.* It's great as a temporary backup.
Am I understanding you correctly that you don't use your router's wifi connection because it is secure and you do let others use your Mac's wifi connection because it is insecure? I would want my Mac wifi secure so that others, including neighbours and those in proximity at hotels, airports, etc could not connect using my Mac.
IMHO using the router's wifi is better than using the Mac's wifi for sharing the Internet. The router is specifically designed to do that while the Mac is designed to also include the sharing capability but sharing is not the Mac's main function. And, why use your Mac;s processing power, turn it on, manage it just to share a connection?
You might want to set up a "guest" connection in your router if you want to allow insecure connections to the Internet rather than setting up an insecure connection through your Mac.
