IMac will not get past chime & white screen

iMac will not get past chime & white screen. I have tried all the start up key combinations I can think of (d or c etc) with a start up disc, but no joy. The disc drives seems ok - you can hear it working & it will eject OK.
Any other start up ideas, please?

Have you tried a safe boot? If not, hears how (it's straight from Mac Help):
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
Be sure the computer is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Help! Macbook Pro crashed? Will not get past start up screen.

Can you boot with an installer DVD? If so, then reinstall:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Air will not get past the eula screen with HTC Sync

    Hey,
Air is required to be installed to use HTC Sync (ver 3.0.5511).  It seems that Air is installed, but when trying to launch HTC Sync, I get the Air eula screen.  I say "I Agree", but then nothing happens.  I'm not super technical, but it looks like there is something in the attached log about something "failed". I have tried installing/uninstalling, re-booting both HTC Sync and Air over and over again with no luck.  Anti-virus is disabled and I have admin rights.  I'm very frustrated at this point and appreciate any help that anyone can give.

  • My mbp will not go past the white screen.

My mbp started running real slow for some reason, i downloaded Mackeeper and it started its thing.  the computer quit responing after a while, i shut it down, and now it just sits at the white screen w/a spinning little gear and a status bar (not filled) for hours...

See if you can Boot to Recovery with Command 'R'.  If you can, then erase disk and install Lion.  this could save you time.  Read this:
    Ciao.

  • G4 will not get past boot up screen

My dad's g4 has been making a cloud clicking noise lately which was a clear indicator the hard drive was on it's way out. He went to back up the hard drive one day when he turned the computer on and he says "When I turn on the computer the screen illuminates but the only thing I get is the revolving gear. Computer never boots up or progresses past the revolving gear." We are pretty sure we need to replace the hard drive but he has a lot of information on the hard drive that he would like to remove.
    1. How can he get the data off the OEM internal hard drive?
    2. What type of hard drive would be ideal for the G4 to run engineering programs like AutoCAD and Pro-E efficiently?
    3. Once the hard drive is replaced how do we go about installing an OS, do we have to buy a new OS from Apple?
    Thanks,
    Britt

For attempting to gain access to the hard disk drive in
a machine with issues, that won't boot regularly, one
could try and see if starting in FireWire Target Disk
Mode would be viable. A dual-ended 6 connection
FireWire 400 (or other suitable) cable would be needed
to connect the two computers via the FireWire ports.
Start the ailing computer up in FW TDM and there
should be an icon on the display of that machine
of the FireWire symbol. Then follow instructions on
the support web page (or in Help in the OS X) to
continue. The data on the suspect computer's HDD
should be available from the healthy computer and
it could be saved to DVD media or a third external
    hard disk drive.
Some users have even tried making a clone of a
computer's hard disk drive when attached to another
Mac via this FireWire Target Disk Mode. That may
be a stretch, to expect to save everything; but some
try this and a few have succeeded in being able to
restore (clone back) from a suitable clone on a boot-
able FireWire externally enclosed hard disk drive
where a full computer clone had been made.
Third-party clone utilities are available by download
and they work from there without cost; donationware.
Carbon Copy Cloner has merits; there's SuperDuper, too.
How to use FireWire target disk mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
A replacement hard disk drive should be at least
the minimum specifications (per original) and if
a larger capacity, could have a larger buffer or
cache and perhaps have a higher RPM speed.
And be sure to get the correct type; since new
Macs use a SATA (serial ATA) but traditional
ATA drives are what the older 'New World' Macs
have; these are also known as Parallel ATA.
The G4 would use a PATA or ATA/IDE HDD.
(The much older ones had solid SCSI hardware.)
The OS X version last installed in the computer
should have an installer disc; so that could be
used again to put a new system into a new hard
    disk drive; the Installer disc has utilities inside;
so a new hard disk drive may need to be formatted
and tested or repaired from the Disk Utility version
found in the drop-down menu of the booted Installer
disc; where optional tools in the utility are accessed.
If getting a fair amount of the information off a failed
drive is difficult or next to impossible, you may have
to consider an external drive enclosure to put this
failed hard disk drive into, and later on, use a healthy
Mac to attempt to gain access to that & recover it.
There are a few good recovery applications available
and they do cost money; some will tell you if there is
a chance at recovery before you buy the application
(The app is often a download; the key is later bought.)
Anyway, I hope this helps a little...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My ibook G4 will not get past the restart screen when upgrading to leopard

I bought the family pack to install on both my personal and professional macs. The install went fine on my mac mini, though it took forever. However, I am trying to upgrade my ibook G4 (which is more then qualified for the upgrade) and every time I restart it by holding down the power button I get the same result. The screen is grey with the Apple logo then it just goes straight to another telling me to restart the computer. The Leopard disk is still in the dvd drive and I can't eject it. Does anyone know how I can solve this problem and either install Leopard or just go back to the way things were with Tiger?

That's a kernel panic and it looks like you might have a hardware issue. Look [here|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031210193237190] to eject the stuck cd using open firmware. After insert the cd that came with your ibook and run the extended part of the apple hardware test and see what it says. If not then try running fsck which you will find how to do [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417].

  • HT201263 my iphone will not get past the restore screen no matter what i try. Any ideas please?

i have tried everything suggested on the web but nothing works

    1. Restore after rebooting and disabling your security software.
    2. Try to restore it on a different computer.
    3. Take it to the Apple Retail Store (or a friend with a Mac) and try to restore it there.  You will need an appointment at the genius bar.
Good Luck!  Mine worked after rebooting computer, reseating cables, disabling security software, and only running iTunes.  If I sync once with the security software running it is a matter of time before the computer won't be able to recognize the iPhone, and if I forget to turn off security software before restore it fails to restore.

  • Can't get past the white screen at start up

I can not get past the white screen when it starts up. It will chime and then stay at the white screen. I have replaced the hard drive, memory, battery. I have reset the PRAM and the SMC.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen

Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen
    my system:
new (month old) 24" intel imac, 2.8 ghz, 4 gb ram.
running: leopard (upgraded from tiger, which was pre-installed at purchase), installed 10.5.1 update right before this huge problem occurred.
install discs on-hand: two-disc tiget set, single leopard upgrade disc.
    what led to this:
i wanted to install windows using bootcamp on a 50 gb partition.
at this point i was running leopard 10.5
i followed all bootcamp instructions, printing out the guide, as well. once i got into the windows setup, i was prompted to choose a partition to install windows. unlike the bootcamp guide, which showed three partitions, one clearly labeled "bootcamp", i saw only one partition. not wanting to risk writing over my mac partition, i quit the setup and rebooted the mac os. after some googling around, i looked for firmware updates (didn't need any), and then software updates. i decided to try updating to 10.5.1.
i then ran through boot camp again, deleting my previous windows partition, creating a new one, and moving forward as before. once again, i was only shown one partition to choose from in the windows setup. i exited the setup again to reboot through the mac os, but this time, i was only given a blank gray screen.
here's what i have tried so far:
booting from a CD, holding down the C or D keys: no response (in fact, i have to restart the computer holding down the mouse button to be able to eject the CD)
booting with option key held down: gray screen
booting with option key held down with external bootable firewire drive attached: the firewire drive appears as a boot icon, and i can click on it within a five second window, but then the screen freezes after that time period, and nothing changes
booting into target mode while attached to another mac: gray screen (no firewire icon, and drive never shows up on other mac)
resetting NVRAM: i'm able to hear the boot chimes, but no difference in performance. gray screen every time
Safe boot: nothing but a gray screen
    Verbose mode: gray screen
    Single user mode: gray screen
Single user mode with firewire drive attached: occasionally (not every time), i am able to get the white on black terminal to show up. from here, i'm able to run fsck, but it appears to only be checking the firewire drive. i have tried several times to boot from here, and once it took me to a blue screen with movable arrow cursor, but it never went beyond this.
is there anything else left to try before taking it to apple?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,

I'd call Apple support at this point. You'll need
to put this issue on the record.
Call U.S. iPod and Mac technical support: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
The wait may be long for an agent to come on the line
so expect that and have some other stuff to do in the meantime.
If you have the applecare protection plan, I'd ask about "onsite"
    service.
I like your work ! Good luck !

  • IMac won't start up, can't get past the white screen

I have an older iMac, I believe it's the g5, the white one, got it about 6 years ago or so. It was acting up recently, crashing programs, taking a long time to respond etc. I figured I just had too much stuff on my hard drive so I went out and bought an external hard drive. After I copied over a bunch of files (not everything, my music and my photos aren't backed up!) I then deleted the files I transferred from the iMac to make room. It took a very long time for the trash to empty, and then I tried to restart. It shut down but never rebooted. When I press the power button it will only get to the white screen with the gray apple and gray progress wheel. It stays like that for a minute or two with the wheel turning but barely any progress on the progress bar and then it turns off. I tried unplugging everything including the power cord but nothing works. Any ideas? Thanks.

will it start in Single User Mode ? (Hold Command + S after hearing the chime)
If so, follow the fsck section at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417
and when/if you (finally) get a 'volume appears to be OK' message
    don't restart afterwards.
then, still in single user, type the command   df/    followed by enter
making sure that the result shows Capacity at some reasonable level, like 90% or less.
df means 'display free disk space', you're checking that the drive isn't so horribly full that attemoting to start might further risk your data
if Capacity is ok- reboot as per the article; if not, post back.
If you can boot in Single User & have done the above, but still can't start normally - try
Safe Mode to see if you can copy your files off.
If Single works, but nothing else, it's probably possible to copy your files in that mode, using typed commands.
if you can't start at all -
Checking your exact model at http://www.ifixit.com/ will show how hard it is to remove the HD yourself... some are pretty easy with the right-sized screwdrivers, and the drive can then be taken to anywhere with a computer & the right cable/adaptor to copy your files.
    or
    Target Disk Mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
if it works for you, would let someone with a computer & firewire port access any of your files that are intact. Apple may, as mentioned, say it's too old for them to look at.
finding the dvd's/getting replacements would be best.

  • Pages 2.0 will not get past the "getting started" screen

i just updated pages to 2.0 on ipad 2 retina (ios 7.0.2) and now i cannot open pages, it will not get past the "getting started" screen
has anyone else experienced something similar?

Had the same problem. This sovled it for me:
    Just let it load.
In Keynote, I didn't have so many documents, so the freeze didn't take too long- that's how I noticed it's just a freeze while loading.
For pages it took much longer. You can also turn off iCloud in settings for Pages, Keynote, etc. open it, re-enable iCloud in settings app again and quick switch back to pages (double-click home button). It will freeze up again, but after a while after all documents have been pulled from iCloud, it will be back to normal.

  • Ipad screen is white. Restored it on iTunes. Press home and on switch goes black then back to white with no logo at all. Can't get past the white screen. This happened after running app updates. 16GB OS 7.1.1

The ipad screen is white. Holding buttons didn't work so I restored it on iTunes. When I press home and on switch, the screen is white,  goes black then back to white with no logo at all. Can't get past the white screen. This happened after running app updates. Is there any fix besides going to Apple store? In iTunes on computer can see what is on there. 16GB OS 7.1.1

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.
