Imac will not Startup in Mac mode, Goes straight to windows!
I used to turn on my computer press option button and my option window will allow me to choose which I wanted. Either Mac or Windows. Now when I turn on and press option there is a grey screen and it loads up windows seconds later.
I am lost and do not know what to do. I would appreciate someones assistance.
Hi runskie
Insert your Install Disk and restart holding the Option key to Boot into it, then skip over the Install section and select Disk Utility on the menu bar and repair the Macintosh HD volume!

IMac will not boot from any mode except Target Disk
I have an Early 2008 Penryn iMac 24" MB398LL/A running OS X 10.7.4 (see specs below) that will not boot from ANY mode, It also has several strange vertical bars from top to bottom on the screen. They are about 10 px wide, with some pixels empty and looks a bit like a barcode if you squint at it.
I have tried Safe Boot, Force Boot, DVD Boot, FireWire/USB Boot, and it always gets to the same point. It gets to the apple screen with the spinning gear and then after about 8 seconds it freezes. The only way it works at all is in Target Disk Mode. It pops right up on my Macbook Pro and I was able to grab all my info!
I have run Disc Utilities and Tech Tool on it many times from my MBP and it passes every test.
I reformatted the HD and installed 10.7 again, it still freezes up at the same point.
I have tried using Single User mode and every time have had to run /sbin/fsck -fy twice because it always says the disk is ok but it was modified on the first pass.
I thought maybe it had a bad video card or logic board but and I ran the Apple Hardware Test on many occasions and it always passes. Recently I was told about Loop Mode and just completed running the AHT for just over 30 hours without any errors at all.
UPDATE...
Strange Part… I tried installing Mountain Lion in Target Disk Mode and everything went smoothly. When it restarted on its own the lines on the screen were gone for the moment, but the Mac still freezes up on the spinning gear and immediately restarts on its own. I have run every thing listed above on it and still nothing. Sometimes the lines reappear then in two more starts they are gone.
I did manage to have it start one time got a copy of the the error report (its at the bottom too) The Mac ran for at least 30 minutes with no problems, then the screen went crazy a few seconds and it became unresponsive. The mouse moved but that was all it could do. Now my iMac continually restarts itself, I don't have any more ideas, HELP!

Greetings,
my 2007 imac 2.8 GHz running OS 10.6.8 started acting funny - slow disc access, internet access, etc. then stopped working all together last night. Now will not startup, even with C key held down and trying to start from a disk. I see a blank gray screen with the whirling icon then screen goes blank and shuts off. I spent an hour with Apple tech support and nothing we tried will start up the computer. Question - is this how imacs die? If I buy a new imac, can apple salvage my data? and no, time capsule never worked on my computer so I was not able to back up the data.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
THanks everyone for reading this.Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

imac will not start up properly
Hi Jane,
Where exactly does it stop or have problems?
Hold alt key or option key at startup, does that show boot choices?
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Does that work? -
Imac will not reboot in safe mode
Attempted to restart imac (10.8.4) by holding down shift key, went through progress bar, and now still apple logo with pinwheel - any suggestions?
I have unplugged the externals with time machine and the other external.WZZZ,
I stand corrected sir - I have not been doing the bit highlighted below:
"To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup in Mac OS X v10.4 through Mac OS X v10.6.8, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. During startup in Mac OS X v10.2 through v10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
To leave Safe Mode, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup."
Source: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Step 1 is NOT a requirement however as you suggested. If I follow step 3 I can boot into Safe Mode now with a restart as opposed to a shutdown.
regards,

IMac will NOT boot into Mac OS X!! [URGENT]
(not sure what section this goes in)
After a failed install of Ubuntu 10.10 via BootCamp (was unable to install due to it not picking my wireless keyboard up, I'm unable to get a wired keyboard) I ejected the install disc but I'm unable to boot back into Mac OS X. Holding down the Option key while it's starting up does not work. I also tried booting into Safe Mode, didn't work either. I'm currently on my mother's computer because I am unable to use my iMac. How can I solve this?
When it boots up, it plays the startup sound then goes to a black screen with a flashing white text indicator thing.Nevermind! My grandma brought a USB keyboard over.

IMac will not boot in recovery mode
I have tried to boot into recovery mode (CMD-R) in Mavericks. I tried with my hard drive and a Mac Install disk. Disk utility has grayed out the erase option except for unused space. Can't partition either. I am attempting to donate to my church. They will use their Apple ID to load their current OSX. Help
If you still have the Install OS X Mavericks.app file from the App Store or can download it again, you can recreate your Mavericks Recovery HD using the Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 utility and the Install OS X Mavericks.app.

ITunes will not startup after upgrade to 10.7 on Windows 7
After updraging to 10.7 I received an error message...
"iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 127)"
So attempted to install again, it appeared that iTunes was actually installed as I located it in my program files so when the download completed I ran repair, this did not work. So I uninstalled it completely and reintalled I got the same message. When I attemped to open the program from the start menu, I received a different error message....
"The procedure entry point kFigMetadataFormat_QuickTimedata could not be located in the dynamic link library MediaToolbox.dll"
I then restarted the machine, and I got thie following message on restart......
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\YSCrashDump.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support."
Any idea guys as I have never ever had any problem with iTunes, I have always upgraded the new versions when they become available and have not had a problem, untill now. HELP!Taken at face value, you're having trouble with an Apple Application Support program file there. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)
Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Application Support" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post. (If you've got XP, although the procedure is for Vista and 7, just read "Computer" as "My Computer", read "Uninstall a program control panel" as "Add or Remove programs control panel" and assume the system is 32-bit, and you'll be doing the right things.)
Re: I recently updated to vista service pack 2 and I updated to itunes 10.2.1 and ever -
iMac will not load internet sites, despite having all green lights (strong WiFi signal etc) on the Network Diagnostics screen. in other words there is a strong
internet wifi signal going into the iMac but the machine does not connect to the internet. I OS 10.9.5. Other devices work fine with the same internet signal.iOS 10.9.5 does not exist.
iOS refers to the operating system on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch.
10.9.5 was never a version of a Classic operating system.
10.9.5 was a version of Mac OS X, and is 13 years newer than Classic.
Here are reasons for WiFi signal to fail even when they appear to be strong:
Most common Wifi issues
Your Mac may be too close to your WiFi router, in which case, it might be better to connect to it via an ethernet cable if it can't be moved. -
My Mac Pro 2.8 crashed and will not reboot in Safe Mode - HELP!
Hello
I have a Mac Pro 2.8 and it froze up on me; I held in the power button to shut it down. Upon restart, all I get is a flashing foldoer file icon with a question mark.
What gives? It will not start in Safe Mode, via the Shift button OR DOS command (sudo nvram boot-args="-x")
1. How do I get it back up? I have a back up on my external hard drive, but it doesn't recognize it?
2. Are all my current files gone?
Thanks for your helpA flashing question mark on boot can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from or the startup disk is failing or failed.
Since you don't have the install discs now, it may take some time to order and receive them from Apple. Probably time to take the Mac to an Apple Store or Apple certified repair shop. They can tell you for certain whether or not the disk has failed.
Since holding down the Option key that prompts the Startup Manager window didn't work, not does your external drive recognized your Mac, I'm afraid without a backup to restore those files from, you may be out of luck.
can I get a new one from mac, and will it erase all my files?
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available. -
Please help, my iMac will not start up, the apple comes up and the wheel goes round but then I am left with a blank white screen. Has anyone any ideas.
Locate your original install disk (it's grey) and use it to restart your iMac by holding the "C" key during startup. Use the disk utility to repair your harddrive.

we have a mac laptop and dont have any problems with pdf files but our imac will not open them. any suggestions?
Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again. -
Mac will not stay in sleep mode
My IMac running system 10.5.8 will not remain in sleep mode. I have tried closing all running applications and this makes no difference. After restarting the computer it seemed to function correctly for a short time then once again would not remain in sleep mode. The energy saver has no wake options set.
Here are 3 shots...of course things keep moving but I think I got most off.

I have already tried compressed air. No luck. How will I be able to get the cleaning disk in to load if I can't load a regular cd?
How will i be able to get the business card in far enough to reach the inner area where the optics probably are located?
Cleaning discs will load. On a MBP that has never been cleaned, run the cleaning 2-3 times. If you use the slot a lot, use the cleaning disc about every 3 months.
