IMac with 3TB Fusion drive will not partition under Boot Camp
I have a 27" iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive and I am using 10.8.4.
I am trying to install Windows 8 Pro with Boot Camp. Everything starts well enough, but once I get to "Create a Partition for Windows" and setting a 505 GB Windows partition, it begins the process, but then seems to stop progressing with the status indicator pretty much stopped at a point directly under the "d" in the "Status: Partitioning disk.."
I've let it run for the past 1.5 hours and it hasn't budged.
This is not my first attempt at doing this on this machine. I tried manually partitioning with Disk Utility which pretty much ended up in a disaster that I was able to repair with some difficulty. That was covered in this thread.
I realize that 3TB drives were not supported under 10.8.3, but I thought that was fixed. Am I wrong?
This is a bit of a guess and you might have do a bit of further reading to understand what I am trying to say but basically:
When you buy a Mac - its Hard Disks come partitioned using the GPT partitioning scheme that is used for the UEFI boot process (All new Windows 8 badged computers have UEFI now as well - Macs have been using it for years). This is opposed to the old MBR partitioning scheme that was used with the BIOS boot process.
There are quite a few limitations of the MBR partitioning scheme including:
1. A limit of 4 partitions per volume
2. A limit of 2 TB per partition
3. Poor support for AHCI
When you run Boot Camp - it turns your partitioning into a hybrid of the two, so you get stuck with all the limitations of MBR - with the second bullet point above I suspect of giving you issues.
You have a couple of possible solutions:
1. Test with having all partitions less than 2 TB
or
2. (Technical) Try and install Windows 8 in EFI mode - its a bit tricky at the moment and a little bit of work - but I have it working on my MacBook Pro (although I do have nVidia graphics driver issues that you may or may not encounter as well). Additional information from Linc's post. Basically, only one additional partition can be added to a Fusion Drive and it resides on the HDD.

Time Machine stalls on first backup of new iMac with 3TB Fusion Drive
I've got a brand new 27" iMac with latest patches up to OS X 10.9.1. I've loaded about 500GB of data onto this machine and wanted to make an intial Time Machine backup, so I connected a brand new 4TB Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 external hard drive, formatted the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), pointed Time Machine at it, and let it go. It ran up to about 30GB before I walked away. When I came back maybe 8–10 hours later it was still stopped at about 30GB. I stopped it, and tried again. This time it just went a couple of GB before halting. I can hear the external drive stop spinning because it isn't being accessed.
I also have a new 2TB Western Digital My Passport USB 3.0 external drive, so I formatted that as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and tried setting it as the Time Machine drive instead. Again Time Machine gets a little way into the backup before stalling and proceeding no further. I think this rules out the drive, since both drives behave the same way.
I also have Super Duper installed on this machine, so I tried doing a full disk copy to the WD drive and this worked flawlessly. This suggests that nothing is wrong with the drives themselves, as does the successful check of all three disks with Disk Utility.
I've checked "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" in Energy Saver. I've unchecked "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". I've checked "Enable Power Nap". I set Time Machine back to using the 4TB Seagate Drive and have been letting it run as long as it wants to. It got up to 13.32GB this morning before seeming to stall this morning. 10 hours later when I got from work it's still at 13.32 GB and it still says "About 7 hours remaining", just as it did at 8:30am.
I've read a bunch of discussions on here about issues like this, which is where I came up with some of the things I've tried. So far, nothing has worked. Can anyone suggest a working solution? It seems like the Time Machine software just isn't workinPondini's site is excellent, but didn't happen to cover this problem (or Mavericks in particular as of yet). But I did call AppleCare support as you suggested, rkaufman87, where I was quickly escalated since I'd already tried the things the first tier support people start with. After some investigation via screen sharing and inspection of my system log (which suggested the stall involved issues with the index) the main change we made was to clear out the Time Machine preference files and Spotlight's cache before rebooting and trying again. This time the backup completed without stalling, and has continued to work ever since. Thanks for encouraging me to call support!

I receive the above black screen 'no bootable device' error message daily, after not using my imac for a while. I will note that the computer will boot normally, and after a while, the screen saver initiates. Some time later, I get the black screen error message. I have to hard boot the computer again at this time. Any ideas?

JTHThat message means that your Mac restarted and that no bootable volumes were found. First, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose Macintosh HD. Then, see if the problem appears.
Also, open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and verify it. This may be a sign of a hard drive failure -
Is it possible to install win7 on a new imac with 3Tb fusion drive
I know it was impossible without discarding the fusion system before.
I read it was possible with windows 8 since mountain lion
But is ti possible with win 7 (i have a licence).

I am trying to install Windows on a new iMac w/3TB Fusion drive. The system crashed on my first attempt but appears to have partitioned the drive correctly before crashing??? So, what size partition does Windows 8 need to operate effectively? Is "more" better??? or just over-kill? And, has anyone installed Winodow 8 on an iMac...and how did it work? Would apps like "Parallel Desktop" or "VM Ware Fusion" be a good idea and troubleless?
I will try again but not too confident that it may get worse before it gets better.

P.S. I configured this iMac with the i7 processor 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3,9GHz. When I select "About this Mac" it diplays my i7 processor as a 3.4GHz instead. Do you think they ran out of the i7 3.5GHz and shoved a i5 3.4Ghz in the iMac to meet deliver schedule??? I there a way to check the real-time speed of my processor??.It depends on your uses. Can you attach an external HD to the new iMac with a fusion drive?
I'm trying to decide how to configure the new iMac I am going to buy. Can you attach an external HD to an iMac with a fusion drive? I'm assuming it would be fine, but since the fusion drive is new, I don't want a nasty surprise. Some of the new Mac Minis now have fusion drives, so has anyone added an external drive to it?

However, Apple has since amended the FAQ, clarifying their earlier Fusion confusion.
Therefore I believe the answer is yes, you can add an external USB HD. If Apple would only state that explicitly in this document, it would eliminate all doubt. -
mid 2011 21.5 inch iMac with lion video=freeze, will not restart for 30-60 minutes , today it took 14 hours before power button would restart it , is anyone else having a long restart after this problem?
Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here. -
I try to install windows7 system on my macbook air, which version is 10.8.5. When I open the bootcamp, it let me to choose a windows ISO image, which I've already downloaded from this website: http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325 /, it also asked me to select a USB drive, which is kingston that has 8GB. Then when I clicked "continue", it said that "Your bootable USB drive could not be created" "Boot Camp only supports 64-bit Windows installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for 64-bit Windows installation." But actually the ISO image I downloaded is 64-bit windows7. I don't know why this would happen. Could someone help me please!!

I identified the reason to be that the W8 installation file didn't download completely from a Mac OS-device. I downloaded from another Win-device and the moved the installation file with a USB-stick and then everything worked diectly! But thanks anyway. -

Hello. When I first opened the Boot Camp Assistant app, it said it could not work with the 3TB fusion drive. With the updated version of Boot Camp, the option to install Windows appeared. I tried to install Windows 8, but the loading bar stopped moving. I waited for hours, but it still did not move. I decided to quit the app, and re-open it, in order to try again. It crashed, and would not open. So I restarted my system and when I did that I noticed that I had about 1GB or so left of storage. This shocked me, because the disk was just suddenly filled for some reason. In hopes of fixing this I used an app called 'CleanMyMac' to try and recover the disk space. And as I thought the disk space returned to normal. However when I went to Disk Utility and clicked 'repair disk' it said this...
There is only 1 partition, so the Boot Camp process did fail.
I don't know whats wrong with my system though? I would like to install Windows, but I'm worried that I might recieve errors again. I have not got Apple Care, but I'm playing on buying it soon, due to it being almost a year since I bought the system.
Maybe I did something wrong when trying to install Windows with Boot Camp? I don't know, but if possible can someone please tell me if I can install Windows and if something is wrong with my system.

With 16GB, it will try to create 16GB hibernation file, 24GB page file, and need 20-30GB for the OS, plus room for temp, cache, applications, 9GB just temp to install SP1 update(s).
did you create 80GB or larger partition?
also, some macs with ssd + hard drive have issues, and of course you need Windows 7 64-bit home premium (Pro to use more).

Which configuration of iMac 27" ? Fusion drive or not ? RAM upgrade ?
I'd love to get a new 27" iMac for my Mother, but cannot decide if the higher i7 processor (3.5) is worth the price, and cannot decide if the 3TB "Fusion" drive is worth the extra $350.
The retail Apple stores stock the i7 only with the 3TB Fusion drive, the better graphics card, and stock 8GB of RAM, but one can configure the machine if ordering on-line via the link below. Her husband will reimburse me or it will be a gift. Money is not the issue.... just whether or not the money is worth spending.
One last thing: The apple store rep said that the "Geniuses" have to do the RAM upgrade, say from 8GB to 32GB because the 21" unit has to be opened. So the consumer doing the RAM upgrade will void the warranty. Yet I see website indicating that the 21" has a nice convenient door to open and the RAM is user-upgradable without voiding the warranty. Which is true ?
Apple wants to charge $600 (parts and labor) for the RAM upgrade to 32GB. But Crucial has 32MB of this RAM for under $300 with a lifetime warranty. Is there a reason to use the RAM from Apple ?

4. If it's for business, go for the i7 and the video upgrade.
5. I'd do the upgrade myself, purchasing from a reliable vendor of Apple RAM such as crucial.com or macsales.com. I have no experience with the other vendor you mentioned, RAMfinder.com. Factory-installed RAM offers the pricey convenience of having a machine configured by you online and shipped directly to your mother in a few days with no one else needing to be involved. I'd avoid any Apple salesperson who apparently doesn't know the 27" iMac product well enough to give you the truth about user-installable RAM upgrades. OWC (macsales.com) will purchase system-pull original RAM allowing you to recoup a small portion of the cost of the upgrade, though nothing close to the resale price of the RAM.

How to reset 3TB fusion drive to original partition scheme
When I first purchased my 27" iMac in early 2013 I was unable to use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition (with the version of OSX it shipped with bootcamp was initially disabled but added in an update later). I found a guide online for untangling the Fusion Drive partitions and essentially setting up bootcamp manually.
However, a few days ago I had Windows 8 get screwed up and needed to reformat. I figured that since Apple now updated Mavericks to allow my machine to use bootcamp I would start from scratch and do it properly. The problem is, I cannot seem to get my machine back into a "factory default" setup. I tried removing the CoreStorage volume and letting the Disk Utility tool "reset" the drive, and that -seemed- to work. I had one 3TB partition (according to the GUI) and re-installed OSX. I used Bootcamp to split 2TB for Windows (games) and leave 1TB for Mac. Everything went fine and I restarted into the Win8 installer. However, at this point Windows refused to install to the 2TB partition. I tried formatting it, and delete/create but it said it couldn't install to that partition. The confusing part is that according to Windows I had about 8 partitions (EFI and Recovery I understand but the rest I don't know the reason for).
So now I'm back at the OSX Recovery and this is what "diskutil list" is giving me. Why are there all these 524.3 KB partitions? I can't seem to remove or merge them. I know I should have recorded what the original structure is, but it's too late now. Can someone tell me what the 3TB Fusion Drive *should* look like, and how I can get back to that?

Dual monitor not working under Boot Camp on Mac Pro ATI HD 2600 XT
Recently got a brand new Mac Pro with ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card.
On the Mac side (Leopard), everything works perfectly: my second monitor (a plasma screen connected with HDMI to the second DVI of the ATI card via HDMI/DVI adapter) is fully recognized and it works as an extended desktop or in Mirroring mode.
Under Boot Camp (Windows XP Pro) however, NOTHING: the second monitor always appears in the display properties, but it is grayed out (inactive), and when I try to activate it, it switches back to being grayed out immediately and nothing gets displayed on it.
After reading all the posts I can find on the topic, I tried the following (in pretty much every possible combination - Thank god for WinClone that allows me to restore the Boot Camp basic install image without having to reinstall Windows from scratch every time):
a) Bootcamp 2.0 (installed by default by Bootcamp assistant)
b) Update to Bootcamp 2.1
1) Windows XP Pro SP2c vanilla install (from my Windows XP pro install disk)
2) Update to Windows XP SP3 (I tried with and without BC 2.1: both worked -> BC 2.1 didn't seem to be required for SP3 - maybe because this is a mac pro and not a MB or MBP)
i) ATI drivers installed by default by Boot Camp assistant (BC 2.0) or by BC 2.1
ii) Latest ATI drivers found on ATI web site specifically under Boot Camp / Mac Pro.
Note: Interestingly, the catalyst installer worked ok (provided .NET framework 2.0 is installed though), but it seems that the Radeon BootCamp/Mac Pro driver set itself from ATI's web site does NOT include a driver for the HD 2600 XT - so when I install this driver set, it tells me that no compatible hardware was found...
iii) Latest ATI drivers found under Windows XP (these did include one driver specifically for the Radeon HD 2600 XT)
NOTHING seems to work. I read posts (most of the from late last year) about ATI Catalyst utility showing a 3rd monitor at some point, but I never got any 3rd monitor showing in any of my many many trials with Catalyst. I have yet to get a single image appear on my plasma under Bootcamp Windows. I don't believe its the hardware because everything works great on the max OS X side.
I am actually considering switching to an NVidia 8800 GT just to get the dual screen to work under BootCamp/Windows XP because I really need it and I read everywhere that drivers for NVidia are far better than ATI ones.
Any advice? What should I try next before getting an 8800 ?
Is there a diagnostic utility that I can use to test my config including the GC?
Thanks!Hi there aside from my laptop I have an iMac 20" with the same HD 2600 XT card. I recently installed the Catalyst 8.6 driver by using a driver mod from driverheaven, I use Vista 32. By installing it this way I got boosted performance and many issues with the bootcamp drivers were fixed. As you may already know the ATI drivers do not install on bootcamped macs usually but the mod tool fixes this. Its unofficial so do so at your own risk but try it out and see if you get the second monitor if not just rollback. Hope this helps and I didn't want to say too much about the 8.6 driver mod because it may not be allowed here but google will provide any answers.

Best way to install Windows 8 on an iMac with 1tb Fusion drive
I just ordered my first iMac. Not my first mac, I have owned numerous Mac laptops in the past but am finally ready to make the switch for my main desktop .
Now I need to installed windows 8.1 because I need to run visual studio. That is literally the only app I need to run.
Ordered with the below specs:
27" imac
i7 processor
1tb fusion drive
16gb ram.
I am thinking of two options:
1) use parallels or vmware fusion and create a 200gb windows virtual machine and give this machine 6gb ram (4gb is recommend by more couldn't hurt). since the fusion drive works at a block level, my windows OS and vs should parts of the VM file should get moved to the SSD as I will be using it a lot. my main goal is max performance. i will be working on metro apps (not windows phone apps). any recommendation on which is better? parallels or vmware? stability and performance is key. i don't need any fancy UI integration and i won't run any games. happy to run windows in fullscreen mode.
2) create a 200gb partition and run bootcamp. cleary more stable but will it be faster than above because i am assuming the ssd caching will not working here?
per mircorosft website they give instructions for both options above, but i am looking for realworld experience in what will get be most stability in terms of network IO (working on UPNP apps so need stable network bridging) and then performance is key.
HDD size is not a big deal for me as most of my media lives in my synology NAS.virtual machine will be more stable
bootcamp will be faster but the only place you will notice is if you play new 3d games on diwndows
