IMac won't accept CDs

From what I've read about on the forums, I'm not the only person experiencing problems with their Superdrive. I've had the problem for a while now but it's getting on my nerves and I need to do something about it.
My G5 Imac is probably about two years old now and late last year the Superdrive stopped accepting CDs. This of course means I can't import music discs into Itunes anymore.
However it will accept data CDs. For instance, it successfully read and imported a World of Warcraft CD a few weeks ago.
Any ideas or suggestions as to what I could do to get the Superdrive working as it should be without spending a few hundred pounds getting a brand new one installed?

  • IMac won't accept blu-ray discs

My iMac won't accept a blu-ray disc when I insert it - the iMac spits it back out after about 10 to 15 seconds. I then tried a normal DVD and the iMac accepted it and started playing it almost immediately. Is it not possible to play blu-ray discs on an iMac or Powerbook? Are there any fixes?

    Hi guys,
I in the same situation as Seattle Oz, in that I am thinking of buying an iMac and would like to use it to produce high-definition videos. I currently use a Sony VAIO VGN -- A R21S which has a Blu-ray disk drive. I am told that with the use of Roxio Toast, I can burn to a Blu-ray disc but cannot play it. I find it pretty incredible that a product that is renowned for video editing and allows you to produce a Blu-ray disc doesn't actually have the facility to play it! However that being the case, what does anyone else do, to produce HD quality videos and how do they export them, if not by Blu-ray disc. I would also like to know what format the output is in, when it is burned onto the Blu-ray disc.

  • My iMac won't Accept My AOL Account and Gmail Account

For some reason my iMac won't accept new emails from my AOL and Gmail accounts which was weird since it was able to yesterday. I read from one of the post on the Apple community threads that I could delete the accounts on the Account section in Preferences and just reenter them which I tried to do but I can't reenter the AOL account because it's saying it can't "verify" the account/password (And I know that I didn't put down the wrong password) and it'll accept the Google account but it won't accept the Gmail part.
Now I have a Mail app on my iMac that won't accept my AOL or Gmail accounts and I don't know what to do. So far my iPhone doesn't have a problem with reading emails and I can still look at the emails through the websites but I want to be able to use the Mail app)

    Hi sierra42,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact verification message you are receiving. If it is regarding verification of the outgoing mail server, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • Macbook won't accept CDs

My macbook will burn DVDs fine (I'm actually burning one right now). But for some reason, whenever I insert a CD into the drive, my computer makes a few noises and then spits the CD right back out.
I though maybe if my computer prompted me for a CD maybe it would accept one. So, I tried to burn a playlist from iTunes, and then inserting the CD when it prompted me for a blank disc. Still the same problem - I inserted the CD, iTunes said "checking media," and then the disc came right out (with nothing burned on it).
I'm using CD-Rs that say TDK on them (if that helps). They work fine on my parent's PC, so I'm not sure why they're not working here.
    Any help?

We are having very similar problem on a 1.83 GHz Macbook (2006).
The mac reads DVDs fine (can't write DVDs, it's a CD-burner only), but won't accept CDs, either commercial ones or just burned.
We changed the system (upgrading to fro m10.4.11 to 10.5.3), but no avail, the problem is still there.
We created an empty user and tested the drive with this user, still the same.
The only thing we did not do yet is starting the mac from a CD (I think we'll have to use a Linux CD for that).
Anyone has got an idea out there?
    Thanks,

  • Imac won't read Cds

5-yr. old iMac: suddenly won't read CDs. It spits them out after 10-20 seconds with no error message.

    Thanks everybody
I too have suddenly developed this failure to burn. Worked well last week, now doesn't even get to the multiplexing stage, just ejects the blank disk. Ejects original Leopard disk, won't write to CD with Toast 8. Couldn't even check the hardware diagnostic as it just spits the disk out.
Tried Unix single usere mode Command S to type in fsck -y after the prompt localhost# (p840 - The Missing Manual series Leopard) but never got to this prompt. Upgraded to lastest iMovie and iDVD
Tried your FINDER- PREFERENCES - TICKED THEM BUT THEY DON'T SHOW UP IN THE SIDEBAR. . Starting to look ominous. Here I am in the middle of the South Pacific with no Mac repair shop within 3000 km.
OR any other suggestions - may be "life saving" or this iMac is going on a long flight soon or could you send your father-in law.

  • My iMac won't accept discs of any kind

I don't know when this started but for the last couple months my iMac has stopped accepting discs. I used to watch movies and burn cds all the time and somehow it just stopped working. Any tips or help on what may be the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Is the disc inserting all the way, then ejecting? Or you can't insert a disc?
Does the superdrive show up in the system profiler?
You could set up another account profile and see if the drive works on that account. If so, then it's a software issue.
There might be something stuck in the drive? It's happened to me twice.
    1) My son dropped a coin in my iMac, couldn't insert a disc. I took the drive out opened it up, the coin had dislodged a spring causing the drive to remain locked in the "disc inserted position"
    2) A piece of label had come off in my iBook. The disc would load, spin then eject. Again found the label after I had taken the drive out and opened it.

  • Combo drive won't accept CDs or CD-R/CD-RWs

my iBook's combo drive suddenly would not accept CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs. it can't recognize the disk and automatically spits them out. it can't burn CD-Rs as well. it can only read DVD, DVD-Rs. why is this so?
is apple planning on solving this problem? and compensatin for those who have purchased the defective combo drives? any suggestions on what to do to solve the problem?
    thanks.

  • Imac won't accept Airport Password

My iMac will not accept the password of our airport extreme network...it finds the network and when I type in the password it rejects it.. It is able to connect to my neighbor's unprotected network.. I have raised this computer from the dead and it is working fine except for this .... do you have any suggestions... thanks so much..

A new or recent AirPort Extreme router would use the WPA security protocol by default. Depending on the iMac G4 model, it may not be able to use WPA. The iMac itself supports WPA and Mac OS X Panther supports WPA, but some of the oldest original AirPort cards (802.11b) cannot use WPA, while newer cards of the same type can use WPA. It can definitely use the older WEP security protocol, so you can try changing the setting on the router to use WEP. If your iMac G4 is a newer model that uses the AirPort Extreme (802.11g) card, this should not be a problem.
It would make sense that it works on an unsecured wireless network, if it is a problem with WPA not being supported. As a test, you can try disabling security on your AirPort Extreme router to make sure it is working.

  • IMac won't accept password after time machine restore

Restored 2009 IMac after an HD replacement by Apple. All proceeded smoothly until IMac wouldn't accept my password after the restore from Time Machine. Any ideas will be appreciated.

One thing to try, if you didn't already do this, is to reinstall OS X and use Setup Assistant (which is only available at first boot of a new HD or a reinstalled OS) to migrate your data. A full Time Machine restoration on a new HD can have file permissions problems and/or duplicate User Account problems if Setup Assistant is not used.

  • IMac won't accept commercial dvd, but do accept commercial cd

    Hi all,
I have an iMac Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz, 3 gigs RAM, 500 gigs hard drive, 10.6.8. I can ripe commercial audio cds with no problem, but it won't take any commercial dvd. When I insert the dvd, drive's iMac makes some sounds, then spits it. I've tried with an external superdrive (Lacie) to no avail. In my MacBook the same dvd plays flawlessly.
    Thanks for the input.

Is this a new machine or an older machine. If it's new then contact AppleCare ASAP the number is in your owners manual. However what I think the issue is Region of DVD and what the region is set for on the system. If you're not familiar with DVD's there are different regions for different parts of the world, the US is Region 1, I'm not sure what Mexico would be to be honest. With most computers they can only play one region, the region can be toggled but only one at a time if I recall correctly. So that is what I suspect the issue is. Check the packaging of your DVD's and it will let you know the region. On the Mac to be honest I'm not sure how to check the region.

  • IMAC won't read CDs or DVDs

    Hello,
I just got my iMAC setup and established today. Everything went fairly smoothly until I tried to insert and play a DVD with the side-mounted DVD drive. The drive physically took the DVD, but it always just cranks there for several seconds and then spits the disk right back out. This happens with regular data and music CDs as well. What am I missing?
    Thanks.

    Thanks everybody

  • IMac won't burn cds...Problem with Tiger?

I used to have Panther and I would occasionally get error messages when trying to burn cds, mostly the buffer has been underrun. I upgraded to tiger and the problem worsened and I began getting other error message. Mostly "the device failed to calibrate the laser power needed for this media" sometimes it just spits out the cd without an error message. I have a warrantly with Fry's. They have had my computer for over 3 months and keep claming that there is no problem with my comptuer, even though they have seen the error (what idiots!) ..
Their recent claim is that it is a software issue, and that the superdrive in the imac is not compatible with tiger, and I need to downgrade to my original OS. I find this very hard to believe. WHy would apple come out with an OS that is not compatible with the superdrive??
Keep in mind, everybody at Fry's seems to no NOTHING about Macs...This is the last time I buy an Apple from there!!
Does anybody know anything about this issue??

i have almost the same problem, i have an imac G5, i jus purchased it last october, i use it to burn stuff all the time and nothing happens, until like a couple of dayz ago.. i tried to burn a cd and it ddnt work, i uninstalled toast and installed it again, restarted my computer but it still ddnt work.. but when i burnt a DVD it worked, but it cant burn cds. i have no idea why this is happening. it has never happened before...helllllllpppppppppppppppppp please because i really need to use it.....
