IMac won't boot unless snow leopard disc is in the drive

I am running 10.6.4 and have a boot camp partition running windows 7. The windows side is working fine, however snow leopard will not boot unless I put the disc in the drive. I don't need to do anything else at all, just put the disc in. If I do not put the disc in, I get the apple logo appear, a time bar appears at the bottom of the screen which fills up a small amount and then disappears and then I get the grey spinning circle and the apple logo for ever more!
Can anyone please offer me some advice?

Something you could try would be booting to the Snow Leopard install disk. Once at the welcome screen, choose your language and click next. At the top of the screen you will notice the menu bar appear, choose Utilities > Disk Utility. In Disk Utility choose your Mac partition, from there go to the First Aid tab and Verify the Disk and also your Disk Permissions. If any errors show up click Repair on the respective option. After that try booting to OS X again, without the Snow Leopard disk inserted.

My 2010 iMac will not boot in Snow Leopard, only Windows. Have tried reinstalling Snow leopard a few times and works only for a couple of minutes before freezing and doesnt reboot. If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.

The Tale of the Beeping Macbook - AKA- My Macbook Pro keeps beeping when trying to boot into Snow Leopard Disc's disk utility

Quick back story: about a month ago my macbook was falling and I caught it quickly, I had a game controller in my hand and it lightly hit it whilst I was catching it; the laptop made no contact with the floor, couch etc. Upon reveling in my epic matrix esque catch I noticed it was beeping and the screen was completely black - Horrified I held down the power button for a forced power down and then turned it back on to see that it was fine, along with no visible scars, dents etc to the chassis. Now flash forward to present day, and the macbook pro is only two months old (bought may 4th 2011) and I notice it's got some slightly irregular slow loading points when loading a browser, photoshop, etc. I do the standard disk utility to verify the disc and it says
"Checking volume bitmap.

(It should be 537095 instead of 537096)

(It should be 161641 instead of 161640)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

So I put in the snow leopard disc to go to the disk utility within, reboot the laptop, and it goes to the gray boot screen with the dark gray apple logo and stays there whilst doing the aforementioned beep from my spider-sense catch. Does anyone happen to know what is wrong? Would that tiny tap from my controller when catching it have caused this problem I have now? Is there anything I can do at home to fix this since I can't get to the disk utility on the snow leopard disk? Will Batman ever get out of the Joker's trap? Or am I better off just making a genius bar appointment? Thanks in advance.

Are you using the Snow Leopard disc that came with that Mac? A gray disc that came with a different Mac won't boot yours, and a Retail (white) disc with a version of OSX earlier than the one your Mac came with won't boot it, either.
If you don't have the right disc, do you have an external HD, or can you borrow one?
(By the way, your post shows you're running Tiger; you might want to update that.)

MacBook won't boot after Snow Leopard Updatel

I installed the 10.6.3 update today and after the "installation complete" message and subsequent restart, my computer would load the gray screen. That's where the normal boot up would end. It would then switch to the blue loading screen followed by the Nebula login screen. But then it would loop between those two screens every 20 seconds or so. Occasionally on the nebula screen the login box would appear but if I tried to type or click anything I'd get the dreaded spinning beachball of death followed by a flicker and a return to the blue screen. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've tried booting into safe mode which does nothing. I booted from the disc and "repaired" the disc with no luck. Is here any fix I can do without having to erase and reinstall snow leopard?

Try downloading the "conbo" update and running that. If that does not work, run your install DVD without erasing the drive. That should do an automatic A&I and get you going again.

I want to triple boot Have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives and I want Windows 7 on another drive, can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on another internal drive?

I want to triple boot my Mac Pro I have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives (osx on drive 1, xp on drive 2) and I want Windows 7 on another drive (drive 4, drive 3 is used by osx for storage), can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on drive 4?
I realise bootcamp only allows 2 operating systems and refit could change the size of my current xp drive to accomodate W7, that is not an option here for various reasons one being the drive is pretty much at capacity with only about 30gig free (I work with video so that free space fluctautes quite a bit). I have a brand new drive 4 with 1TB set aside ready for W7 but I'm unsure how to go ahead?

Boot Camp is used to support Windows on the same drive.
You can have a different OS on every drive.
You could have Windows 7, Vista, and XP all on one drive if you so choose.
I recommend not putting Windows and OS X on the same dirve when talking about Mac Pro - unless you just need something small and lite.
Remove all your other drives while you install Windows 7.
You could even relocate XP - if you need it even - or recover the hard drive space.
You should always keep 30% free for Mac OS; same for data/media drives.
Considering 1.5TB WD Black $110.... and you want OS X to be on a fast high performance drive as well.

IMac will not boot from Snow Leopard DVD or original Leopard disc!

I am going mad! I am trying to update my iMac (with original Leopard installed) to Snow Leopard. Here is what I have tried:
Using the Snow Leopard DVD:
- A standard install: the disc ejects after about 15 minutes.
- Put another working DVD in and verified it in Disk Utility, all ok.
- Verified the internal hard drive in Disk Utility, all ok.
- Verfied the SL DVD, all ok.
- Decided to try a clean install, so backed up everything.
- Tried to boot from SL DVD by using the Utilities option, it ejects the disc at restart.
- Tried to force it to boot to the DVD by restarting and holding the C key, it ejects.
- Restart holding the Option key, it ejects.
- Restart holding the Ctrl, Alt and Option keys, ejects.
- Everytime it ejects and starts up normally.
- So I cleaned the disc, updated all the firmware, reset the NVRAM/PRAM via holding keys when restarting, and repaired disc permissions.
- Tried to force it to boot again, ejects.
- Tried to put the disc back in straight after it ejects with all the steps, still starts up normally.
- Changed the start up disc in System Preferences to the SL DVD, restart, it ejects.
By now I am readying the noose...
- Dug out the original Leopard installation CDs.
- Repeated all the forced boot restarts (C key, Option key, Ctrl, Alt, Option keys), same story.
- Repeated changing the start up disc in System Prefs, same story again.
- Call Apple Support, they told me to try everything I have tried and that the DVD drive is dodgy, well it works with everyhting else! Burning and reading! I really don't want to have to go to an Apple Store- it's miles away (a costly journey) and I just do not have the time for all of this.
RAWR! Does anyone know what to do? Please? S.O.S.?

Only Boots with Snow Leopard Disc

Sorry, this is a MBP and Boot camp question...
I've been running fine with windows 7 for months and one day I went to play and all I got was a black screen. The weird thing is that I could still run the bootcamp partition of windows in Parallels.
This morning I reformatted my MacBook Pro and installed Snow Leopard. I created a boot camp partition and told it to "start install", my computer rebooted, the windows disc spins up and the screen goes black indefinitely. I've tried 2 Windows 7 install discs (one from George), a Windows XP SP3, and my original Windows XP SP2 disc, no luck. I can't even get to the windows installer.
I've zapped my PRAM and performed a SMC reset.
I just erased my hard drive and tried to reinstall Leopard and then I was going to try bootcamp again. I can't even boot up off of my old Leopard disc and it won't let me boot from the system disc that came with my MacBook Pro either.
I've gone ahead and reinstalled Snow Leopard for now. I can at least use the Mac as a Mac, but it's weird that my machine will no longer accept any other disc to boot from. I can insert all of the discs and view their contents, I just can't boot from them.

Well, I found the answer myself.
My PCIe graphic card appears to be dead. When I open up System Profiler, all it shows is my NVidia 9400M.
Time for a trip to the Apple Store.

IMac won't boot from OS install disc

Hello. I'm using a refurbished 2010 - 2011 iMac running Snow Leopard, which did not come with the original install disc. Just purchased from Apple, an OS (Snow Leopard) Install Disc specific for my model iMac but my machine will not boot from it.
I've tried booting from the disc holding down the "C" key and it tries to start up but all I see is the grey Apple logo, no spinning gear and it just hangs there. I've also tried holding down the Option key and selecting the Install disc from the start-up choices that display but the same thing happens. Any ideas, anyone?

Did you call Apple and ask for replacement disks (giving them your serial number)?
If not, and if you purchased the retail version at the Apple store online, then you may have a version that is older than what yours came with. And, macs cannot boot from an OS older than what they came with. I believe the latest retail version is 10.6.3 and yours might have had 10.6.4 or higher. You might want to check on your model to get the exact OS version; you may need to call Apple and request replacement disks.

MacBook Pro won't boot into Snow Leopard

I've been running Snow Leopard for a few weeks now with no problem, but today my laptop refuses to boot into the Snow Lepoard partition, it is stuck on a grey screen with the logo and a spinning wheel.
I have tried booting into safe mode with no luck. Also I have a Windows boot camp partition which I can boot to and work properly, and finally I have booted from the Snow Leopard disk and run disk utility, the HDD can be verified and the only warnings I get when repairing permissions are about SUID files being modified and will not be repaired. I don't know if that s the root of my problems, any advise will be greatly appreachiated (sp?).

I've usually found that such problems are accompanied by hard drive damage, but you say it's testing fine, so that's obviously not it. But sometimes vital files get corrupted somehow and you never know why, unfortunately. It could have its roots in some application crashing a year ago.

Won't boot from Snow Leopard USB Thumb drive

I have a 2.4 ghz Quad Core Mac Pro with 14 GB of memory... I have created two thumb drives, one is a bootable image of the installation disk for 10.6.. the other has the 10.6 installed..
The start up menu recognizes them both and says i can start from either but when I try I get no further the the Grey Start Up Apple.... any suggestions would be apprecoated

They are both GUID but since they were from an Snow Leopard Install Disk.. I believe tey are at 10.6.3
I will try upodating the Drive with the full system.. but if that is the case then I am sort of uo thw water way with oiut a propulsion device for the Install Disk version

Windows Vista won't boot in Snow Leopard

Hi everyone
I tried to boot into my Windows Vista Boot Camp partition today and it wouldn't start. After holding down the option key like usual, it just sat there with a white screen. No Apple logo. No partitions to click on like usual. Then my Mac ran incredibly slow and was glitchy. What happened to Windows? Please help.

You're very welcome.
I always leave the boot order BIOS setting to boot from the HDD first so as to shave off a few microseconds from the boot time.
When I need to boot from another device such as a DVD in your case, I turn on the PC, at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, I tap the F9 key to get the one-time boot menu.
I select the DVD drive from the list. Then I hit the button on the drive to open the drive, pop the bootable DVD in, close the tray, wait a second or so and then hit the enter key.
After I hit the enter key, watch the sreen for a message that states in substance...attempting to boot from DVD...press any key to boot from DVD...
I press any key and the PC boots from the DVD and off I go...
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Now remember...making that file is pretty easy, but only if you read both my notes and the guy that wrote the procedure's steps carefully.
There have been a few forum members that I have had to coach during the process, because they were following that guy's every step to the letter, and as I pointed out, there is only one mistake on his first screen shot...but that one mistake is all it takes to stop you cold.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that Vista folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
You get past that, and you're home free.

I need to install osx I have the snow leopard disc but my optical drive doesn't work.

I made the rushed decision to completely scrub my Mac and reinstall the software again. I bought the computer about 4 years ago from a student at my university who was leaving. When I got it lion was installed already. Now I can use the install disc as my optical drive is broken and I can't recover from the internet as it wants the apple I'd from the original person. I can't find an uncorrupted file to USB boot my machine . has anyone got any ideas before I bite the bullet and get my CD drive repaired .

Purchase an external CD/DVD optical drive.
There are cheap ones (under$50) that'll last anywhere from a year to three years or more expensive(over $50 and higher) that will last much longer.
Not all optical drives are Mac compatible.
Most Mac compatible drives you will only find to be purchased online.

IMac won't boot unless i hold option!

Alright, so I have the late 2006 iMac. And, I went to turn it on, the gray screen appeared, I got the startup chime, and then nothing happened. I turned off, and tried again. And again. Still no response. Then I held down option as I booted, and I selected Macintosh HD, and booted into Mac OS X normally.

Go to Apple menu > System Preferences... > Startup Disk and ensure "Mac OS 10.4.11 on Macintosh HD" is selected. It might also be prudent to run Disk Utility and +Verify Disk+ . Let us know how you get on.

IMac won't wake after Snow Leopard install

I installed 10.6 on my MacBook and iMac. No problems with the MacBook. But every once in a while after putting my iMac asleep it won't wake up. I push the power button, click and type. Nothing. Sometimes if I wait 10 min it turns on by itself, but usually I have to hold the power button down and reset the computer. Any ideas? Is it something on my end or an Apple bug?

MacPro3,1 won't boot into Snow Leopard 64-bit mode

I'm baffled by this. All the compatibility lists I've found online state the MacPro3,1 (early 2008) models are 64-bit compatible.
I have a 3,1 mac pro, single 4-core Xeon, 8GB RAM at work, and it boots into 64-bit mode just fine.
I have the exact same machine at home, except just 4GB RAM, and it will not boot into 64-bit mode.
I have not found any documentation on this, but my only hunch at this point is that not only does 64-bit mode enable more than 4GB of addressable RAM, but could it be that it requires more than 4GB?

OK, I got it. added "arch=x86_64" to com.apple.boot.plist and it is now booting into 64-bit mode. Its just strange that holding down 6 and 4 during boot didn't work on this machine, when it worked fine at the office.
