IMAC won't boot with USB card reader attached

My quite new 24" iMAC won't boot if I have a USB card reader attached:
I get to the white screen with the apple logo, but it gets stuck there and the little spinning gear below the apple logo never appears (I've waited several minutes). (In all my test cases, there is no card in the card reader.)
I've tried two different card readers with the same results ("iDOTconnect" brand and a brand new Apacer unit, both are USB2.0 multi-format card readers).
The 1st one I tried via a USB hub, the second one I tried via a new hub and also directly connected to the mac (both of those hubs work fine).
Anyone have any ideas?

Strathglass

Hello strathglass
The same thing can also happen with other connected devices such as external HD's and iPods, the Startup Manager is lost and searching for a boot volume.
1. You may be able to fix it by going to: *System Preference / Startup Disk* and select the *Mac OS X 10.5.5 on Macintosh HD* then *Click the lock to prevent further changes.*
2. Leave those devices that cause boot issues disconnected until the iMac is up and running!
3. Only sleep the iMac, and be sure to disconnect those devices be for shutting down or updates that require a restart!
As a habit, I have always ejected and disconnected all mounted USB devices (flash driver, iPods, cameras, card reader, etc.) from my hub be for sleeping, restarting or shutting down...

  • Intel imac won't boot with usb powered hub attached

My intel imac has started to not boot with a powered (have tried a variety of them) attached. Just stops at the white screen. Also, after I attach the hubs (2, both powered) the computer got into spurts when it just kicks everything attached to the hubs off saying that something pulled too much power. At other times it is fine with the same set up. I've tried resetting the PRam but it didn't make any difference.
I see from other postings that this isn't too uncommon, but didn't see any fix.
    Thanks

Can you determine if it is just one of the hubs? Resetting the PRAM probably didn't have anything to do with this problem but the SMC controls the power, try this reset:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • IMac Won't Boot With USB Keyboard Connected

We have a suite of 10 iMacs (10,1 - 21.5 inch), but one of them will not boot and has issues coming out of sleep while a USB keyboard is plugged in.
Have tried swapping the keyboard with another iMac - the other iMac still boots but the problem iMac continues to play up.
Tried plugging the mouse into the iMac's USB instead of the keyboard's.
    Tried SMC reset, PRAM reset.
Re - imaged the machine from a time machine backup of one of the other iMacs, which made the issue go away for about a month... but then it returned.
Using a magic keyboard is fine as a workaround, but the users need the number pad, and if possible I'd rather fix the issue than buy a clunky separate keypad.
Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be very appreciated!

  • MSI P43 won't boot with usb devices connected

When i try to boot i freezes at the detecting usb devices when i have a usb device connected. It does with any usb device. But when i boot up without any usb devices connected then i boot fine and i can connect the devices right after the detection of usb devices. How can that be?

Googled on "computer not booting with usb code 6b38" and found this:
     Quote
    ****SLOW BOOT-UP in POST SCREEN****
P.S. If you see the BIOS code 6B38 in the bottom right corner of the screen, this is a indication that USB Legancy support is enabled in the BIOS. If this is enabled and you have any usb devices attached such as a external USB Hard drive, your system will take ages to go through the POST boot screens.
So disable this setting in the BIOS and the system will then boot in a matter of Seconds
    From:
    http://www.rebelshavenforum.com/sis-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=30;t=000250
Also try and see if a clear CMOS will help, some people suggested that from a old post from MSI forum here, saying its bios 1.3 thats bugged.
So if disabling doesnt work, perhaps down/upgrading BIOS might.

    Hi,
    Have you tried these:
    1. disable onboard USB?
    2. uninstall USB2.0 drivers in WinXP
    3. use only the USB card without any other PCI card (just for testing)

  • Notebook won't boot with usb device plugged

    Hi,
Voila, I have a Satellite Pro Sp6100, when i try to boot it whith an usb printer plugged in, the notebook won't start at all. i have latest bios version 1.90.
    Thx,
    Barzot @+

    Hello
It will be interesting to know if the printer is ON or OFF when you start the unit. I have tested my Tecra M1 with USB stick and the boot up procedure needs about 5 min. If I put the USB stick out the unit starts as usual.

  • IMac won't boot with external drives attached

I am using iMac 27" Late 2013 model upgraded to mavericks 10.9.4. Two external drives are always attached with it, one is segate 3.5" 2TB USB 3.0 drive and another one is 2.5" usb 2.0 drive.
when i start my imac with external drives attached it won't boot up. Stuck at plain white screen after a startup chime, not even any apple logo or any progress circle appears. And i have to detach all of my drives to make it boot.
This problem arises after upgrading to mavericks. Already tried resetting PRAM, SMC and checked Startup disk and verify disk with disk utility.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • SD card not mounting in card slot, mounts only with USB card reader

    hi all,
I have browsed this forum "Ports and interfaces on the MacBook Pro (2008 and Later)" for a bit and searched for "SD" but did not find any posts directly related to my issue here.
I have a Kingston 512Mb card which mounts in my MacBook Pro only when I insert it in a cardreader inserted in the USB port.
Directly in the memory card slot it does not mount. Other SD cards do mount. I did not yet recognise a pattern in what mounts and does not mount.
I need to mount this specific SD card in the memory slot because bigger, newer SD cards are not accepted by the device I am using the card in (an iRex iLiad).
The Kingston 512Mb SD card is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT16) according to Disk Utility.
Any suggestions on what I could try? Buying other 512Mb cards is not that easy, there is not a lot available and only the ones on this list http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/IliadSD_Memorycardslist are supported by the device.
    TIA!

Within a year or two, a device that is limited to 512MB and smaller cards — and only certain ones of those — will probably be completely useless. As you've found, no one else is interested in buying such tiny cards any more, and their production is likely to be discontinued very soon.
This does nothing to explain why your card can't be read in the built-in reader, though. One thing to check is the position of the "lock" slider on the card; a small handful of other posters with similar problems have reported that if the slider isn't securely locked or unlocked (I don't recall which), it gets disturbed as the card is inserted, and the card can't be read as a result.
If that doesn't solve the problem for you, just use your USB reader when you have to read that particular card. As you say, your other (presumably larger) cards are all read properly in the built-in reader, so you know the reader works. There may just be a minute manufacturing-tolerance problem with that particular card.

  • Powermac g5 2.5 dual won't boot with video card

    Hi all,
So the other day I came home to find my powermac g5 frozen with the fans going crazy. After a hard reset the machine would no longer boot any further than the grey apple (kernel) stage. After pulling the video card the machine would boot up and I could log in using remote desktop from my laptop.
The machine ran that way for a couple of days until I got a new video card. When I put the new video card in the machine would not boot again.(The new card is exactly the same one as the old one)(ATI Radeon X800 XT mac edition).
After pulling the card the machine still wouldn't boot (exact same behavior as with the card) until I let it sit unplugged for 20 minutes or so. Also when it's not booting I can see that a little red light comes on on the logic board behind the cpu's.
Anyways I'm thinking it may be a power supply issue but if any experts wanna help me out with some advice I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Cory

    Hi Cory,
See if it will Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permission.

  • Why does my laptop have problems with USB card reader?

I have a PowerBook G4, and I connect a multi-slot card reader to a USB port to read CompactFlash media. I have two problems with it and wonder if anyone can help.
    1) When I "eject" the media, then physically remove the media from the card reader, I occasionally get a "Media not removed properly" alert message. I always wait several seconds after the media icon has disappeared from the desktop before removing the media. I can't seem to reproduce this on demand, but it appears to be happening more frequently.
    2) Once the media has been removed from the card reader, the computer no longer recognizes it when it is reinserted into the card reader. I have to unplug the card reader from the USB port, then plug it back before the media is recognized.
Any ideas how to resolve these issues?

    1) Wait longer. It can sometimes be necessary to wait as long as 15 seconds. I've never seen a good explanation of why.
    2) Are you plugging the reader directly into a USB port on the Powerbook? Are any other bus-powered USB devices connected simultaneously? If so, disconnect them and test again. If you have an AC-powered USB hub available (or can borrow one), try plugging that into the computer and the reader into the hub. (Don't use a bus-powered hub.)

  • P7N Diamond (still) won't boot with USB Keyboard

Hey everyone, I have my box up and successfully running now, thanks for your help. I have 2 remaining issues. The motherboard will not post with my USB Saitek Eclipse I keyboard plugged in alone, I have to plug in a PS2 to get it through Post, then switch it out.
Also, almost every time I cold boot, I get a message that says, "Operating System Not Found." When I reboot, it works fine.
I've read through previous posts, but nothing seems to directly address my issues. Do you think the keyboard thing is a wait-for-BIOS-updates fix? Has anyone else successfully booted with a USB Keyboard on a P7N?

The only time I had an "OS not found" error was when bios for some odd reason set first boot priority to the usb port on my dell monitor as well as other usb devices before my boot drive. I changed boot priority and it went away.

  • W701 Won't boot with USB dongle attached

W701 with current BIOS (6KET46WW v1.12) will hang if there is a USB dongle for a Microsoft Explorer Mouse USB dongle in the upper left USB (2.0) socket on boot. Works fine if you put the USB dongle in the lower USB/eSata socket. Note that the upper socket on this 2541-W1Z is NOT a USB 3.0 port (silver, not blue). Course I don't want to put it in that socket since I like to use that for eSata... Apparently the same problem exists in the W5XX laptops as well, but I don't see a post discussing the issue on the W701.

    Have you seen the thread

Yours may be a similar problem.

  • Hp m8430f won't boot with video card

I have a HP Pavilion Media Center m8430f Desktop PC.
One day on startup my acer flat screen wont show bios or anything.
If I remove the 8500 gt and use integrated graphics, it works fine with my old crt monitor and I’m actually using it to write this.
If I insert the 8500 gt, however, my lcd monitor gets no signal and I hear no OS sounds indicating that windows is loading up or anything even though the video card works in another computer and I've replaced the motherboard.
I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, and I'd really appreciate it if you guys could give me some ideas on what to try next.
    IPIBL-LB (Benicia) motherboard
    Intell core 2 quad Q6600 2.4 GHz
    nvidia ge force 8500 gt
    Integrated graphics intell gma 3100
    tv tuner card
    Modem card
    4 Gig DDR2 ram
    Steps I've taken
Video card and monitor tested and work in another PC
    Reset bios with jumper
Removed ram tried one at time .
Removed all cards and tied that.
    Replaced power supply
    Tried all above again.
    Updated bios
Replaced motherboard and put it all back together

The 500w is definitely sufficient and this is such an odd issue. It doesn't make since. We've tested parts in other machines and even replaced parts yet the same problem holds true.
With the video card inserted does the computer boot at all? Do you hear fans turn on lights, anything or is it just dead?
I'm wondering if we should try to get the computer down to as basic as we need it.
    1 stick of RAM,
    video card
    processor
Disconnect hard drive, CD ROM. and see if it boots with just the basics plugged in.
After that I'll admit that I'd be throwing darts in testing things to see if there is something that sticks. Something like trying something else in the PCI slot besides a video card to see if it stops the system from booting.

  • Windows Won't Boot With USB Drives Attached

I just installed Windows 7 on my Mac mini but it won't boot into Windows automatically if there are USB drives attached.  I have to hold down the option key at boot time and select the Windows partition manually for it to boot, unless I remove the USB drives first, then it will boot into Windows on its own.  Does anyone know how to fix this annoying problem?

Sounds like your mini is set to boot order: boot from USB first.
On a PC you could go into BIOS and change boot order and enable/disable USB booting.
Not sure why or what is on the USB bus, type of drive and device that could also make a difference (and not be universal to the Mini)

  • IMac won't boot with install CD with gray screen

A couple of weeks ago I turned on my computer and couldn't get past the gray screen (with no Apple logo). I couldn't boot in safe mode, and had to boot with software install disc. I recently had to unplug my computer for a move and when I turned it on I had the same problem. Unfortunately after resetting PRAM nothing happened, and I couldn't boot in safe mode. Then I tried booting with disc pressing C during startup, and it sounded like the disc was reading ( I could hear it spinning), but I still had nothing but a gray screen. Also tried booting with recovery disc that comes with Apple Protect Plan and couldn't get past gray screen. After I leave the computer on for a couple of hours I get the folder with question mark flashing. Can anyone help?

    den.thed,
Thanks. I tried the sleep method, but if I were listening to music through my Apple TV or was watching multiple movies, the IMac would shut down or go to sleep after 3 hours and sometimes that became a real bother. I have a HD with just my music from ITunes on it and then I have a new 1 TB HD that I have nothing but movies on it. Those are the 2 I want to leave on at all times, but the machine would freeze if I had both plugged in. Thanks!
