Imac won't detect ethernet cable or firewire connections,

I've also run the prescribed Hardware test which freezes at 2m07sec

If you have not already, I would reset PRAM

and if that does not help, follow this procedure to reset SMU

  • Help! New iMac won't recognize ethernet cable and can't check it

I just unboxed my new iMac and can't get on the internet (I'm on my powerbook). The problem is this; in Network, it says "The cable for Built-In Ethernet is not plugged in." Only, it is. Can't be the cable b/c that's the cable I'm connected with right now. So, I go through "assist me" and when I click on "Assistant" it takes me to the Intro page where I'm supposed to give a Location Name. I do this, calling it "home." The ver next screen, after clicking "continue" takes me to "How do you connect to the internet?" The problem here is that, of the 5 options, only one is selectable. Airport is the only one that can be selected?? "I use a telephone modem to dial my ISP" as well as "DSL Modem/Cable/Lan" are all greyed out..they cannot be selected. I use an ethernet cable. Why is this not able to be selected? It's very frustrating. I've turned off Airport and Bluetooth, yet I still cannot check any of these. I need to check "I use a cable modem to dial my ISP" but I can't b/c it won't allow me. Can anyone help me here? I can't use my brand new iMac and it's kind of a bummer. I thought these things were plug and play? Thanks.

I went and checked logs. Now, I'm not exactly sure what it means, but this is what it shows in the console.log:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.10 (Build 8R2218)
    2007-09-28 08:15:33 _0400

    Sep 28 08:15:43 cory/System/Lybrary/CoreServices/mcxd.app/Contents/MacOS/mcxd:
MCXD.initializeDirectoryServices: Unabe to get the ethernet address
So, I'm curious about that last line. I'm completely stumped. I'm going to have to call apple care. I plan to speak with my IT guy who installed my SW to see if there's any pref's or something that my agency puts on the agency computers that would maybe be doing this. He said he'd be doing a "build" on my machine so that I had that same software I have at work, so I could work from home. Don't know how that could cancel out my ability to select Ethernet in my Network Port Configurations, but who knows.
I'm just bummed I have a new computer and can't get it up and running.

  • Brand new 20" iMac won't recognize Ethernet cable - can't get online

I just got my iMac and cannot get the ethernet cable to recgonize. I know it works b/c I'm using it this very moment to type this on my Powerbook. When I plug it into the PB, I get the yellow, then the green once it connects. However, when I plug it into the iMac, I get nothing. I thought maybe I needed to configure Built-In Ethernet, but it won't let me select configure or connect. The assistant won't recognize it either. I posted in the Tiger forum mistakenly, but thought this forum would be more appropriate. This is what I posted (for more detail):

Well I tried that and nothing. I'm completely stumped. I have no idea why this is happening. And it's weird b/c, everytime I'm jumping back on here, I'm just unhooking the ethernet cable from the iMac and plugging it into my PB. And, nearly immediately, i'm up and running, connected with the PB. How can it work on the PB and not on the iMac? And why would those options be grayed out on the iMac? It's like it just refuses to let me check them and/or configure. That is very weird.

  • IMac won't detect SD card

My iMac won't detect any SD card's. It doesn't seem to matter the size (2GB-16GB) or brand, it is just like I haven't inserted one. I have never used one with it before so it isn't from failing to "safetly remove hardware" and I have tried cleaning the slot (with air can)

Have you checked to see if the SD card reader is listed in system profiler? (apple menu, about this mac, more info button) it should be  listed under Hardware, under USB, it would be labeled some thing like "Internal Memory Card Reader".
If the card reader isn't listed:
Have you tried a NVRAM Reset?
Have you tried a SMC Reset?
If the card reader is listed, but your not seeing the inserted cards:
Have you checked to see if the cards are reconised in Disk Utility? (go to the dock, click on finder, go to the menu bar, click on the go menu, chose Utilties, double click on disk utility) Do you see the sd card listed?

  • My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays.

My mid-2010 10.8.2 iMac won't detect external displays. I've tried using a third-party minidisplay port to DVI adapter, as well as an Apple-brand minidisplay port to VGA adapter. The monitor I'm using is a Dell SP2008WFPt. It is a functional monitor. I've tried resetting the PRAM, repairing my disk permissions, rebooting, and doing all sorts of wacky stuff with the order I plug things in. Is there a solution? It seems like lots of folks are having the same problem.
Thanks! This is really starting to make me angry.

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • PS3 error: "An Ethernet cable is not connected" with E2000

Problem: My PS3 displays An Ethernet cable is not connected almost immediately after logging in. I am connected through a Linksys E2000 router.  If I reset the cable modem, it will work for 10-15 minutes until it errors out again.  If I plug the PS3 directly into the cable modem, it works fine. I'm really confused.
    1. I do not believe it is the router, as my computer is also connected to the router, and works fine. My Touchpad is connected wirelessly and also works fine.
    2. I do not believe it is the PS3, because it works fine if I plug it directly into the cable modem. I tried switching to wireless and it finds a lot of other signals (including mine), but I have the same problem if I choose wireless.
I first had this problem with a launch PS3 and a Netgear router after almost three years of no problems. This was back in November 2010.  I replaced it with a Linksys E2000 router in January 2011, and a slim PS3 in late September 2011.
I had no problems from January until last weekend.  I have tried to do the DMZ trick, but no luck. I have also tried to set the primary and secondary DNS to 4.2.2.1.
Does anyone have any insight? If I need to buy a new router, I will, but I don't understand because it works for my computer and Touchpad.  Is it something crazy like when November comes, my internet settings get corrupted?

Try using the DHCP reservation feature to give your PS3 a "static " ip outside of the DHCP server range. So something above the range called "IP Address Range". 192.168.1.150 should be good, but you can check to confirm that this address isn't in that range.
Make sure your PS3 is set to obtain the network information automatically, NOT through a custom setting. Also, make sure your PS3 is turned off completely before doing this.
Could you also give us a screenshot of the "signals" tab when you go to 192.168.100.1?
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • IMac won't detect my Firewave

I just bought a Griffin firewave, and after following the instructions very carefully, my system won't detect it. The manual says to set it as my audio output using the Audio Midi Setup utility but it is nowhere in the list of devices. Has anybody had a similar problem?

I also just bought and installed a FireWave. The printed quick install instructions, which tell you to make all the physical connections and then install the included software, contradicted instructions on a sticker covering the Firewire ports on the back of the FireWave, which advise you to install the software before doing anything else. An e-mail to Griffin confirmed that the software must be installed prior to doing anything else.
My FireWave is up and running nicely, and I'm enjoying 5.1 surround sound on my iMac using the less expensive speakers I transferred from my PC.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ethernet cable VS Firewire     Which transfers faster?

I have an iMacG5 and a MacBook. I'm using an ethernet cable to transfer files from my iMac to my laptop. Would firewire be a faster way to transfer files?
    thanks

Ethernet transfers data at speeds up to 100mbps while FireWire gets up to 400mbps.
They both use about the same overhead from what I have read, but FW is faster no matter how you look at it.

  • Connect HP laserjet 2100TN to Imac 10.8 via ethernet cable

I want to connect my old HPlaserjet 2100tn to my new imac os 10.8 computer.  Apple and HP say it is compatible.  The printer was hooked to my G5 via the ethernet cable and worked fine.  There is no usb hookup for this printer that I can find.
I am able to find an IP address for the printer via network, the print/scan finds the printer and adds it, driver is in place (after some searching from apple) and everything looks good.  Only problem is it does not print.  Get error message saying the printer doesn't exist and some other similar messages.
Have spent way too much time talking with apple and HP andit apears I know more about this than them anyway.  It's too big a challenge I think.
Do I need to run through my router (old airport base staion that works just fine...looks like a spaceship) which has a port for another ethernet cable?  My internet is wireless, this printer in not wireless capable (IR though..old), but can I hook it in and operate that way without srewing up my wireless internet?
Come on...someone has the simple answer to this question.  Just want to use my old postscript laser printer every now and then.
    Thanks for your help.

This may not help at all, but I have an HP Color LaserJet 2605dn, and one day it just stop being part of my network, as far as I could tell. Would not print, could not be found on the network, even after manually putting in network information.
I reset the printer. I did a NVRAM initializer and a Super NVRAM initializer. I found out how from the service manual for the printer.
I the setup the printer again, like I had taken it out of the box new.
Runs fine. Prints, is found on the network, can use the web based software it has in it.
Maybe this may work for you.
    Good Luck.
    G.

  • Imac won't detect external harddrives

i have never had this problem before. my iMac used to pick up on my WD passport and other HDDs. but for the past two days it won't detect anything. not even a thumb drive. help!?

Is it just storage devices, or all USB peripherals?
Try shutting down and disconnecting all of your USB peripherals, except for your standard keyboard and mouse. Disconnect any USB hubs. Restart the Mac and only connect one USB storage device directly to your iMac. Does that one device work? Try it on all the ports, if one does not work.
You can also try starting up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
in case there is some non-Apple system extension that is interfering with USB storage devices.

  • IMac won't detect 27" cinema display?

I have a new iMac (as of June 1, 2011). I am trying to connect an Apple 27" display to use as dual monitors, but the iMac does not detect it. What am I doing wrong?

I have an old ADC Cinema Display which has been working fine with my new MBP 17" until I fired it up one morning and no display. There were no new software installs, etc. since lthe night when it worked and the morning when it didn't. The display and ADC/DVI adapter work fine on my tower so it's not the CD or cable. And another monitor works fine on the MBP so it's not the video card or the DVI jack. Also the USB functions on the back of the CD still work with the MBP and there is power - just no PIX. I've plugged and unplugged everything - power cycled - no results. Tried another MBP and no display. Still it powers the tower. Any ideas would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro (Lion) won't recognize Ethernet cable

    Hi
    I'm using a Macbook Pro (15 inch, Early 2011, Built-in OS X Lion 10.7.5)
Normally I connect over Wi-Fi and I have no problem. I used to connect via Ethernet (Cat6 cable) sometimes when I was at work and I had no problem back then ( I didn't have to change any settings).
Recently I had to connect via Ethernet in a facility that used old networking systems and I had to adjust all the proxies and IP settings manually. I had serious problems connecting with LAN eventhough all the settings and proxies were set correctly and other computers on windows were able to connect easily. I even tried to connect by restarting to Windowns 7 in bootcamp but it didn't help. The cable was a cat4 I think and after a while I noticed that in System Preferences>Network>Ethernet the cable in continuously getting connected and disconnected ( Green & Red). The IT-man there couldn't give me any advice beyond that my Network adaptor has problems or cat4 is responsible. After a while I found out if I set the configuration to Manually and set the speed in Ethernet>Advanced>Hardware>Speed to 10baseT/UTP I'll get rid of the disconnecting problem and the connection works without problem.
When I got back from that center to my original workplace I set all the settings to the original automatic setting and connected the Ethernet cable (Cat6) and at first the cable was detected (Green) but the IP address was wrong and I couldn't connect to internet. I disconnected/connected the cable 2 or 3 times and after that the Ethernet was not even connecting or detecting the cable and I had the message "Cable Unplugged". The IT team at the center couldn't help me either and the problem remained even in Windows 7 over Bootcamp.
I came to home and tried to connect with a 5e Ethernet cable to my Linksys router ( that I normally connect via Wi-Fi). But the same problem: Cable unplugged. While my brother was able to connect with the same cable with a Windows 7 based VAIO.
I tried to connect with the Ethernet cable to my brother's laptop and it gets connected and obtains an IP Address.
I tried to change the speed and duplex setting to 1000base, 100base, 10base and half and full but neither of these helped and still I get the message "Cable Unplugged" when trying to connect to router.
In system information I don't see a problem with Ethernet card and the information is as follows:
    Name:          ethernet
      Type:          Ethernet Controller
      Bus:          PCI
      Vendor ID:          0x14e4
      Device ID:          0x16b4
      Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x14e4
      Subsystem ID:          0x16b4
      Revision ID:          0x0010
      Link Width:          x1
      BSD name:          en0
      Kext name:          AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext
      Firmware version:          57765-v1.37, 0x7287af41
      Location:          /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleB CM5701Ethernet.kext
      mDNS offload capable:          3c:07:54:07:d0:d4
      Version:          3.2.4b8
So I'm having the problem in different settings, with different routers and in both Mac and Winsows. I have done restarts, shutsowns, PRAM SMC resets and none helped ( neither for the ethernet problem and nor for volume and sleep problems I'm experiencing) so I'm considering reinstalling my OS X Lion. But I'm afraid it is a hardware issue because power fluctuations or something.
    I appreciate any suggestion.
    PS:
1.My MBP has experienced a falling down but I had no specific problem that I can relate to the strike. Also I had no problems with Ethernet after that.
2.I have a faulty Magsafe adaptor that has a corroded cable but it keeps charging and I'm waiting for my new Magsafe adaptor.
3.Newly I have a weak maximum volume on my Mac and volume fluctuations, also some weird sleep behaviours and delays in sleep.

  • Help, 27" iMac won't detect Epson projector

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect a 27" to Epson projector via Mini Display to VGA adapter connected through VGA cable to the projector (that works fine with other pc)...the iMac doesn't detect it....
    Thanks

This has been a big pain. I got the machine back, started it at the shop and it "seemed" ok. When I got it home, after 30 minutes or so, the same problems came back. Another call to applecare, and a new case number was issued to replace the hard drive. New HD in, got the machine home, and the mouse wouldn't work! I could move the cursor, but not select anything. Sometimes during the restarts I could select things, the next time I couldn't, sometimes I could on one user account and not on another. New call to applecare, new case number, many things tried, but ended up re-installing the OS. So far it seems to work okay, BUT there is something weird going on with Mail.
As soon as it is started it basically consumes all the system memory. I can watch the available memory disappear in activity monitor where it says Mail is using nearly 100% of the CPU. If I go in to preferences-advanced in Mail and disable the account, it stops eating up resources.
Any clues to what is going on??
    thanks

  • Unable to detect Ethernet cable

I have a problem, and Actually I had posted about it already, but now I have more information available.
My problem is that my ethernet card isnt working right. I connect the ethernet cable and it doesnt detect it, I've tried many cables and it doesnt dectect any of them... except for one specific cable at my house!!! which is the one I always used before it stopped working. I used to be sure that it was a physical problem with the system board, but now I'm not so sure, since I just tried the loopback feed... or something like that, using ping 127.0.0.1, and I have 0% data loss, so it makes me think that the problem might be the drivers.
Also I don't have ethernet listed under networks at the network profiler. I've tried t find drivers over the internet for my macbook's ethernet adapter but I can't, so my theory isnt tested yet. I'm about to reinstall the OS but it's gonna be very uncomfortable since I dont want to start all over again, so any ideas?

I followed the instructions here: http://davidortez.com/2009/02/16/how-setup-airport-express-att-dsl as I have at&t dsl and a 2wire router. I am not sure if it was the reset or the change to WPA2 encryption that fixed the issue. The Airport utility immediately saw the airport express after following these steps.
