IMac won't go to sleep after power outage.

My iMac suffered a power outage for approximately 10 seconds and powered back up after an extended start up apparently okay. That was until I tried to put it to sleep. Since this outage I cannot put the iMac to sleep. It simply does not repond to pressing the sleep apple menu item. It will shutdown though.
In addition, Safari seems to have trouble opening the home web page. When it does it functions normally, however up on closing it does not close completely. Although the arrow (or triangle) under the icon on the doc disappears, Safari shows up in the force quit window as not responding. Force quitting Safari still does not allow me to put the iMac to asleep but it does let me shutdown.
Any help would be greatly appreciated in getting to the bottom of these gemlins. Also other than a UPS, which I currently don't have, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening in the future.

Hi Barrovian,
Yes, a power outage may cause system file corruption in some cases.
Luckily at least it doesn't prevent your Mac from starting up.
I would try to trace and repair as much as possible.
-- Firstly, is it only one user account that is affected, or all? If other accounts are OK, then the system is not corrupted.
(By the way, it is always safe to have at least another admin account ready, as you can see...)
Preferences files: run Preferential Treatment or the plutil preferences feature in OnyX for example. Trash any .plist file that would be corrupted.
It should be able to find the specific ones, like for example
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
and
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
Caches: you can trash all this user account's caches. Use OnyX or equivalent.
-- If the problem affects all accounts:
After cleaning users and fonts caches and running benign within-Accounts troublehooting, and before starting to clear system and kernel caches,
--> restart your Mac from the Tiger install DVD and run Disk Repair with Disk Utility.
Repair again and again until it finds there were nothing to be repaired.
If those multiple steps and their reboots don't fix yet, trash the system and kernel caches.
Let us know.

  • TS3824 My iMac won't wake from sleep after installing the most recent OS update.

I'm having trouble with my iMac, the screen won't wake up after it goes to sleep. The one time it did the screen was all fuzzy and pink. This has only happened in the last few hours after installing the latest OS X Lion update. Is this normal? Can someone help?

    Hello, not normal.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.
    Re-install if that doesn't work.

  • Imac fan will not stop running after power outage .

unpluuged after we lost power . now the fan runs constantly.

If you note that your Mac fans don't work correctly, do a SMC reset > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • IMac won't boot after power outage

I got a power outage a couple of hours ago. And now my iMac won't boot. When I power it up, it gets pass the white screen with the apple logo. The screen than turns blue with a spinning cursor. The cursor spins for about 10-15 minutes and stops but the normal login screen never appear and it won't boot into the desktop either. I just got a blue screen.
I have boot into the install Disc1 and did the disk repair and premission repair but it didn't help.
    Any idea?

    Oh man, what a disaster!
I tried to do an Archive and Install but the installation hanged at the end of disc 2 after running an iWeb script (according to the install log) with about one minute left. I have waited for two hours but it just hanged there with all the drives spin down.
To make the problem worse. There was no way to quit the install at that point because all the menu items were disabled. The only way out was to power off. But when I powered it back on, it booted right into install directly asking for the disc 2. If I put the disc in it will install again and hang at the same spot.
Disc 2 contains iLife. I know Apple wanted to make things simple but why can't they give me an option to skip it? After all, iLife was already installed.
I finally got it working by booting from disc 1 and did a clean install. It took me all night to re-download all the updates and reinstall many applications. Fortunately, I have my address book, calendar, and most of my works backed up to .Mac so it wasn't a total lost.
On the bright side. Now my iMac is working better than before. I used to have problem getting auto sleep to work but now it works perfectly. Safari also had problem accessing charts (but Camino was fine) in a few web sites like schwab.com. Now everything works.
Lenn and David. Thanks for all your helps.
Now I am looking for a better backup solution so that the recovery won't be this painful if disaster strikes again. Any suggestions?

  • Mac screen won't dim, mac won't go to sleep after VNC connection (ARDAgent)

I can't seem to figure this out. Have my mac configured to auto dim and sleep after 10 minutes. When I have used a VNC client to log on to my mac (via iphone or work PC) using different VNC clients the mac won't dim or sleep after 10 minutes.
After hours of trying to find the culprit it seems to be the process ARDAgent. When I force quit this process the mac will dim and sleep as usual. I tried different VNC clients but the problem seems to be on the mac end. Only a force quit or disabling screen sharing from the settings.app seem to help.
Anyone any idea how to fix this?

    Hi,
same problem with my iMac ... I even did a clean install - it didn't help.
PLEASE APPLE FOLKS - FIX THIS !

  • My new imac won't operate youtube even after installing the latest flash

my new imac won't operate youtube even after installing the latest flash

    Problem solved!
I had downloaded and then installed Flash, and restarted.
The problem?  I was expecting Youtube to work as on my old PC, where you get a little pop-up menu at the bottom of the TV screen to play. pause etc.  That won't happen on a Mac until  you click on the oblong that says Flash in the middle - I didn't know that!
    Hooray!

  • Phone won't go to sleep after ios7 update

My phone won't go to sleep after the ios 7 update unless it is on auto lock which I do not want it on.  Can anyone help me with this problem?

could you fix the problem? I have set mine to all the different time restrictions for it to sleep, and it isnt happening. Consequently, my iphone has been overheating at night when I dont manually put it to sleep. By now Im thinking the battery life has been diminished since it is not lasting as long as when it was brand new (iphones 5s)

  • IPhone 6+ won't go to sleep after using Apple Watch App

I noticed that since I own the Apple Watch my iPhone 6+ battery drains very quick. Currently "Home & Lock Screen" and "TuneIn Radio" are using the most battery (although I force-killed all apps). Another thing I noticed is that my iPhone won't go to sleep after the configured 2 minutes. It just stays on sucking on the battery.
After I restart the iPhone everything is back to normal. I believe the problems start the moment I launch the Apple Watch App on the iPhone.
    Will do some tests...

I'm having the same issue even after the 8.1.3 update. It's not from my carrier because I used a different carrier and noticed the same issue.
My short term fix has been putting my phone on airplane mode then off.
If any one knows a solution, please let me know.
    Thank you.

  • E4500 firmware corrupt after power outage

Latest firmware with CCC corrupted after power outage. I reseet the e4500 several times and tried to reload the firmware and still no good. Only way I got it back up is to install the older non-CCC version 2.37. Strange all was fine until the power outage. Not sure if I should even bother to upgrade to 2.38 again.

Yes, power outages may caused some damage either on the hardware or software of the any device especially if there's some activity going on inside the device the time of the interruption. If everything is fine with the old version then there's really no need to update it but if you've noticed some issues, better upgrade to the newer version so to fix any problems.

It is in recovery mode. The picture is telling you to connect to iTunes via micro usb cable in order to restore.

  • Hyper-V - virtual machines don't start automatically after power outage

    Hi,
I have a HP server running Windows 2012 R2 + Hyper-V. On this server, four VM have Windows Server 2003 R2, and one VM has Windows 2012. After power outage, 1 2003 R2 VM and 1 2012 VM are started properly, but the other three machines aren't. I've started
it manually. All VM's have last version of Hyper-V integration tools installed, the option "Automatically start VM if it was running before the service was stopped" was chosen. I'm not very familiar with Hyper-V, so, I've investigated only Hyper-V-VMMS
event log. There are some recurring errors:
The Integration Services Setup Disk image could not be updated: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x80070020).
    and
Failed to get the disk information.
    But I think it isn't a clue.
How can I clarify, why these machines aren't started automatically?

    Hi EugenBerend,
Maybe it is related to system resources allocation during the start up .
I would suggest you to configure a startup delay for those lower priority machines so that system
can locate enough resource for them.
    Hope it helps
    Best Regards

  • Lion server : local user account disappear after power outage

On the server computer. After power outage I restart server the machine starts up ok.At login screen local user name disappear but there's others account same as client computer.I can log in to network account but can't log in as local.
In sytem preference local user account is still there.
I don't want to reinstall lion server .
    What can i do now?
    Thank you for your assistance.

It sounds like the user directory is damaged. You might try booting into the recovery partition, running Disk Utility, and doing a Repair Volume (and maybe a repair permissions) on the server volume.

  • 09 macbook pro, after 10.6.6 update won't wake from sleep without power

Hey, weird thing going on here. After I updated to 10.6.6 on my '09 Macbook Pro it won't wake from having the lid closed unless the power is plugged in. I've tried closing the lid with the power still plugged in, and unplugging it before I close the lid. If I leave he power plugged in it works fine. If I unplug it after I've closed the lid, or even BEFORE I close the lid (and give it time to calculate battery life and everything) it turns off like it was a out of battery and I have to hold the power button down to make it wake, then it does the blurred out screen with the progress bar at the bottom (like recovering from low battery), but eventually comes back. The battery indicator on the bottom shows it has a nearly full battery when this is happening. I've tried adjusting sleep and power/energy saving settings but nothing has fixed it.... anyone got some ideas? It never did this before the 10.6.6 update
    Thanks!

    Im having the same issue.
Seems to have happened just after 10.6.6 upgrade
Battery only has 80 cycles on it and shows full charge
i dont get the hybernate wakeup screen, but shuts down promptly after unplugged, and wont startup without power.
    Tried:
*SMC RESET-holding power without battery in for over 5 seconds...no change
*P RAM RESET-holding commandoption+pr during startup... no change
*Installed applejack and ran all options... worked... for about 20 minutes then shutdown
    *Changed sleep settings...battery settings...hibernating settings...
    im outta ideas....

  • Imac no longer going to sleeping after update on July 8, 2014

just did the latest update on this week to 10.9.4 Build 13E28 on my iMac 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 and now my iMac well not go to sleep on its own.
    have already reset SMC
    pulled the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    reset PRAM
reset power setting in system Preference panel
anyone else having this issue? my system was working perfect before this update..
really don't want to wipe and rebuild my system at this point.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer  will not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
               ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 5
Disconnect all wired peripherals and test. If you use a wired keyboard and/or mouse, use different ones. You must rule out the wired keyboard and mouse as possible causes of the problem.
    Step 6
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after restarting out of safe mode, post again.
