IMac won't let me install Snow Leopard

I bought Snow Leopard and tried to install it. It keeps spitting it back out.

Will any DVD mount? Try the install disc that came with the machine. If those mount w/o spitting out, but the SL disc keeps spitting out, get a replacement—it's defective. If all disc spit out, then the superdrive's defective and you need to visit an Apple repair station.

  • IMac 27 screen went blank installing snow leopard

My iMac 24 screen went blank installing snow leopard. Should I wait? I wish this **** machine ha a HDD light like a PC.

You can attempt to reset the PRAM in the machine, but it looks as though there's a hardware problem. It's actually kind of difficult to determine if it's the graphics hardware or the mainboard, but neither are really servicable. You'll want to take it to get serviced.

  • My iMac won't let me install anything.

I have no idea what is going on. I won't let me install the simplest software. My OS X is up to date and I have a ton of HD space.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Select
    /var/log ▹ install.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

  • Imac won't let me install Final cut studio 2..it will let me install the upgrade, but it has no live type and i need it to work on my current projects. How do I get Live type back installed in iMac

I just purchased an iMac for home and went to install final cut studio 2 and it gave me an error saying something about "PowerPC" not used or something like that. Installed the studio upgrade just fine...but it has no "Live Type" which I need to work on projects I have been using in my Mac Pro at my work place. How do I get "Live Type" to install in this iMac? Downloaded Live Type upgrade but that won't update cause there's no "Live Type" in the applications.

It sounds like you have Lion installed on your new imac, although your profile says SL 10.6.8 (you may want to change this.)
If you have the Snow Leopard install disc I believe you can install "Rosetta" from the extras folder which will then, if you have the original FCS2 discs , allow you to select and install Live Type and LIve Type content only from the custom install options.
I hope this will work for you.

  • IMac G4 How do I install Snow Leopard?

    Hello everyone,
I'm a university student working with some faculty to get an iPhone app development program going and so far it has had it's obstacles.
We were given a bunch of iMac G4 17 inchers from the university surplus. All the iMacs have been wiped and have no OS on them. I do however have a copy of Snow Leopard that I would like install on them but have been having some troubles.
First off, the only Apple equipment I have are the iMacs. I have no Apple keyboards, only IBM keyboards. So when other suggestions online have told me to hold the command or Apple buttons, I'm at a loss.
When I start up the iMac it comes to a gray screen that has a flashing question mark. I restart and open the disc try, put in the OS disc and restart while holding the C button. The screen stays in gray for about 20 sec, then the iMac just spits out the disc and the question mark comes back.
Anyone have any suggestions of where to go from here to get this stuff installed?
    Thanks,
    Adam

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If your G4s are at least 867 Mhz, you can install Leopard, but not Snow Leopard.
This thread explains how to get Leopard directly from Apple:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2392861&tstart=0
    Alt keys = Option key.
Windows logo key = Command key.
For purpose of installation though, the 'C' key and/or option key booting may only work with Mac specific keyboards from Logitech, Microsoft, or Apple. You'll only need one of those USB keyboards to set it up. Once setup, the IBM USB keyboards will function fine. The only caveat will be troubleshooting and/or if they ever buy another Mac, they may have to get used to the Option, Command key configuration on the keyboard, as the orientation is opposite on the Mac keyboards from that of the PC keyboards.

  • .m2v won't play after installing Snow Leopard

I used to be able to play .m2v files in QuickTIme 7 but since the install of Snow Leopard they will not play in either player. It says it is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. The .m2v files were created from Compressor in Final Cut Pro 2.

You need the MPEG-2 playback component to play these video files.
For those who have FCP this component comes free with FCS. Did you do an upgrade of the OS and not a clean install? If so you more than likely lost the component during the upgrade.
You can use this program, Pacifist to extract the component from your FCP installation disc.
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
It has been a general consensus in the FCP forum to do a clean install of the OS and the FCS. If not you might run into problems with FCP. Here's some reading on that issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9979643&#9979643
For those who brought the component from the Apple store. You need to log into your online Apple store account and download the component again.

  • Epson NX515 won't scan after installing Snow Leopard...

The subject says it all... After installing SL, I'm able to print wirelessly after downloading the latest drivers from Epson's site. But when I try to scan, my network can't be found. I get a "communication error" message. Anybody else having this problem or have a fix. I contacted Epson on Friday morning, but no reply yet.

You might try using a lens cleaner DVD.  I have found that a gentle cleaning of the DVD/CD surface using distilled water can make a big difference.  You might also try to install these disk in another drive, if available, to see if they are damaged.
    Ciao.

  • Trying to re-install Snow Leopard over Lion and Macbook Pro is beeping like a memory failure

I installed Lion on my work 15" MacBook Pro i7 to give it a go, and it's not working with the system we use for Active Directory login, so I need to roll back to Snow Leopard.
I don't have a Time Machine backup, but I have pulled all the data I need from the machine, and have wiped the hard disk ready to reinstall Snow Leopard.
I have a retail copy of Snow Leopard that I've recently used successfully for fresh installs on other machines, but now once I insert the DVD into this machine that's had Lion on it, it's not responding and just making alarming BEEP BEEP BEEP noises.
I googled that and it might be bad RAM (possible, but unlikely? the machine has been running very well up until now)
I've wiped the PRAM, but the instructions for wiping the SMC are a bit cryptic for these machines ...
Does anyone have any clues as to what might be causing this? A firmware issue of some sort?
Maybe the hidden EFI partition on the drive won't let you install Snow Leopard over a disk that's had Lion?

Might be some useful info here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1175934
" I used target disk mode to install Snow Leopard on its partition. I used a friends Macbook Pro, but I put my machine into target disk mode and ran the installer from his user account and optical drive. From a couple things I read online, it seems that Apple recommends putting the other machine in target disk mode and doing it the other way around. I guess some critical files might not have been installed? I also used a retail copy of Snow Leopard instead of my grey recovery disk, so that might be it too. "
"Your machine is newer than the retail copy of Snow Leopard. Use the restore disks it came with.
The installation will need to be done from your machine. You may need to do a net install, so look at "Remote Install Mac OS X" in Utilities."
I'm currently installing from the macbook firewired to the other machine as recommended so hopefully that might help

  • My mac won't start up even after Apple manual suggestions. I jus installed snow leopard.

My IMAc freezes @ start up and it shuts down after  2 seconds.

Did you try restarting it with the original DVD that came with your iMac?  if so what happen?

  • How to partition to install Snow Leopard and Lion on one computer

    My first posting:
My iMac came with Leopard. I upgraded to Lion, 3 months ago. I found out that Appleworks doesn't work anymore... very displeased because I always used Mac Strong points (for the past 30 years), which is drawing, like McDraw, McDraw 11, Clarisworks, Appleworks, etc. Apple could have have included a software in iworks to open the numerous works I have done over the years in drawing. Now iDVD doesn't come with Lion anymore. Another blow from Apple!! And iDVD  7.1.2 (after upgrade from Leopard's iDVD) doesn't work too well in Lion... quite a few things are wrong.
Consequently, I want to install Leopard in an external HD, where I could use Appleworks and iDVD.
I have a 1 tera WD Firewire as an external HD. I have tried a few ways to install Leopard on my external HD with no succes.
I have tried "partionning" the external HD, but when it came to  "Scan disc image" of Leopard, I had the message: Unable to scan "Install" (Resource busy)
I have tried to install with original Leopard DVD, but after pushing restart (to chose my external HD), then my computer keeps asking me to push restart.
Can anymore can tell me how to properly install Leopard on my external HD?
    MartinR says:
Connect your WD Firewire drive. Open Disk Utility and check to make sure that it is partitioned as GUID partition scheme (assuming you have an Intel iMac) and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  If not, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive - note that this will erase everything that is on the drive.
    Notes:
-If you have an Intel Mac you cannot install OS X to a drive that is partitioned as Apple Partition Map; it must be GUID Partition Scheme.
-Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the same as the "HFS+" as previously mentioned.
-For the disk to be bootable it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) not plain Mac OS Extended.
Next, insert your Leopard install DVD in your iMac.  If the installer opens, just exit/close the installer window.  Do not remove the Leopard install DVD from the drive.
Shut down your Mac.  Then restart it by holding down the "C" key while it starts.  This will make your iMac start from the Leopard install disk that is in the CD/DVD drive.  You should then be able to select your external WD drive and install Leopard there.
My response to MartinR (I appreciate the dedication of the helpers)
I tried MartinR solution but it doesn't work. When I restart and keep "C" depressed, after a while, a kind of gray drape closes the screen and tells me I have to restart my computer par pressing "restart" for a few seconds. Then when the computer reboots, it tells me there was a problem and had to restart the computer with a report to Apple window.
I wonder if my computer is not defective? In 30 years, this is the only Apple computer that  broke down on me (Always been faitful to Apple computers in spite of the fact they had little apps then), and twice on top of that. The first repair  was done by Apple in Wellington Mall, Florida (hard drive had to be replaced); the second time was Northstar Computer in Sudbury, Ontario (optical drive had to replaced). Maybe that tells us something? Were replacement parts up to par? My computer seems to be working OK. I verified my HD with Disk Utility, and everything was OK.
My computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz and 4 GB of ram.
My WD external drive is formatted as GUID Partition Table, and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Can't recall which I used to do the dynamic repartitioning.
I'm betting that it was originally Partitioned with Snow Leopard.
As a test I just added a second Partition with Mountain Lion to a FireWire HD and it would not let me Install Snow Leopard from my System or Retail Disc into the Partition.

  • Can you install snow leopard on Intel based mac with less than one GB of ra

As the subject relay I have an Intel mac mini with 750GB of ram? will th einstaller let me install Snow Leopard?

No, the installer will not let you install Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac with less than 1 GB of RAM. Even if it did, performance would be unacceptable & the OS would probably be unstable.
If you want to run Snow Leopard you will need to upgrade to at least 1 GB of installed RAM. If you want it to run efficiently, you should install more. Typically, 2 GB will get you most of the benefits of a larger memory space but if your Mac supports more & you want the best possible performance, install the maximum the Mac can handle.

  • Trying to Instal Snow Leopard partition on Lion

    Hi Everyone
I just recieved my new IMac and I need to instal Snow Leopard on one of the partitions.  Unfortunately everything I have tried has failed.  I desperately need 10.6.6 running on my machine.  Any help would be great!  Thanks!

Yes, I created a separate partition for this purpose.  I've tried to instal Leopard and failed.  Then Snow Leopard and failed again.  I thought all I had to do was press "C" on the keyboard at start up and it would boot off of the instal DVD.  All it ended up doing was beeping.
Any help or ideas would be great.  Thanks!

  • My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.

My iMac won't let me update to OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. It's year of manufacture is 2007 and when I try to install Snow Leopard it now says that it cannot be upgraded on the iMac. Normally it wouldn't bother me but Chrome and Firefox no longer support 10.5! Do I need a new Mac?

Are you using gray system disks from another mac? Normally that message means you're trying, for example, to use disks delivered with a MacBook to install on an iMac. The system disks are locked to the systems they are delivered with and can't be used on other mac hardware.
If that's the case here, call the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE, and order a retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.

  • Help! Lion has basically paralyzed my system. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to open a folder, to open Applications, Safari freezes and won't let me sign into the forums (I'm on a different computer). I tried to re-install Snow Leopard, but no go!

Basics - 2008 iMac, 2.8 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HDD with over 100 Gig free. DId Disk Utility verification and files-disk are fine. Programs will run, but any filing just stops everything (spinning beach ball). I've managed to back up some major content to an external HD, and hopefully, despite the inordinate amount of time it takes, I'll be able to off-load more. But how do I get Lion to work or, alternatively, other than completely erasing the HD, how do I re-install Snow Leopard?

Your upgrade must have failed.  Unless you very very recently upgraded Lion, as in the last hour or two.  Then you need to go to System Preferences and Energy Saver and stop it from automatically sleeping.  Let it sit overnight.  It could be spotlight re-indexing your disk and slowing you way way down.
If that doesn't work then you can re-install Lion cleanly.  You need to finish backing up your data.  Then make a Lion USB flash boot disk or DVD.  Hold option key when you boot and select the USB or DVD drive.  Run Disk Utility and delete then recreate the partition, exit Disk Utility and install Lion.  Then restore your applications and data.
