IMac won't power up - diagnostic LED 2 blinks / chirps

Power light on the front was blinking a quick blip about every 3 seconds and I could hear a very faint, high-pitched 'tweet'. Screen was black, and it would not wake. No hard drive noise, nothing other than the chirp.
Holding down the power button would not cause a restart, or even a shut down. I unplugged the power cord, let it sit for about two minutes, plugged it back in - nothing. Switched outlets, retried it - nothing.
Took the back cover off, plugged in the power and saw diagnostic LED 1 on, LED 2 blinking in synch with the chirping.
Lots of stuff on LED 2 being on, but nothing for it blinking. Any help is appreciated.

It sounds as if you have a RAM problem. Have you added any lately? Try removing a stick (or two, depending on your iMac model) and switch them around. Make sure they're properly seated as well.

Aluminium iMac won't power up after shutdown

Hello All,
I have bought a 20" aluminium iMac for my parents a couple of weeks ago. It went extremely well in the first few days, but I got the complaint from my parents that it cannot power up after the proper shutdown.
It is very strange that it won't power up after it has been shutdown for a couple of hours, unless I unplug the power cord and plug it back in after a minute or so (reset the SMC)
Oppositely, I can power it up normally right after it has been shut down for a few minutes. But never overnight.
I have tried everything I know about like reset SMC and PRAM, as well as running apple diagnostic. Symptom still persist (though the diagnostic says nothing wrong with my hardware)
Is there anyone facing the same problem as me ?

I haven't called Applecare yet. However, I have reinstall the system and done a software update EXCEPT the latest imac software update v1.1 released recently.
See if anything good happen tomorrow and will let you guys know
by the way, it's really great that Mac retains everything including the Apps and Desktop setting after the reinstallation......... nothing has to reinstall except the OS itself

IMac won't power on

anyhow, it won't power on. This isn't an "it won't boot", or an "it's not plugged in" or anything like that.
I push the power button. I see the light come on for about one quarter of a second. Maybe I hear a little static buildup in the CRT. Then everything shuts off. light out, no more action. I can push the button as many times as I like, and it won't come on.
Can't reset the PRAM or anything like that, cause it doesn't GET to where it would reset the PRAM.
Any suggestions?
I'm planning to take the thing apart tuesday evening, but I'd like to have some idea what I should be working on.
In the past I've had trouble with the power, and wiggling the power cord has caused it to power off before (when it's running normally). It got a lot worse today, and now it won't come on at all.

Just as an update, I looked on ebay, and found another machine which was essentially identical to mine (excepting RAM and HD updates I'd done) for about 25 USD. It was local, so we just picked it up (saving shipping), and I swapped in my RAM and HD (plus my CD drive, since the one it came with didn't want to work...), and I'm now back up and running...
It's pretty nice... got some stickers on the case i'll be taking off... display is MUCH brighter, and it doesn't lose power, even when I put it to sleep!! so I can now finally put this thing to bed at the end of the day, give the circuits a bit 'o well deserved rest. Only downside is that the crt whines a bit.. but it's really not noticable over the current combination of crickets (the windows are open) and the massive fan on my dad's CPU. hopefully it won't be too much of an issue, but I like having a bright display enough that I don't care...

Another iMac won't power up...

My 15" iMac G4 won't power up. When I first plug it in, you hear what sounds like some kind of reset sounds coming from either the optical combo drive or the hard drive and then that stops. The fan seems to work and the red light is on under the service cover on the bottom of the iMac. When you press the power on button, nothing else happens. I tried resetting the PMU and it didn't make a difference. Also tried powering up without the RAM plugged in, no change. The PRAM battery seems to work (3.65V ?).
My first thought is either the power supply or the motherboard; can anyone suggest any way determine which it could be (or if it might be something else)? BTW, another data point; pressing the caps lock key on the keyboard doesn't result in the caps lock light coming on.

Listen carefully for any noises, fans, any signs of life at all. If you performed all the troubleshooting steps and there are no signs of life whatsoever it is likely to be a failed power supply.
In that case bring it to an Apple Store. Provided your iMac is not more than a few years old, replacing its power supply is not expensive.

There was a user that reported a similar problem with his machine a couple of weeks
ago, and it turned out to be tied to the HD password he had set. When he turned the
password off, the machine booted normally.

But when that happenend for the first 6 times or so,
if I let it set unplugged for 8 hrs or so, it came back up.
Now, it won't come back up at all, even after sitting around off for
a whole day.
I took it this store on Artesia Blvd, and they were trying to tell me it
was s SOFTWARE problem ! ! ! And said they had to run diagnostics - they were
going to charge me $150 for that. I said "how can you run software diagnostics
when it won't even turn ON?" God - what a bunch of dodos.........
Obviously there is a problem with the power module. So maybe one of you knows of a COMPETENT service person that can deal with hardware issues. I am in the Los Angeles area, and don't driving 50 miles each way to get this problem fixed.

IMac won't power up anymore

Hi,
for a couple of days now, my iMac (Core 2 Duo, 8 months old) won't start up anymore when I press the power button. However, if I press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds, then press it again, the computer will start. Has anyone seen this before?
I know the trick of pressing/holding the power-button to force shut-down. So could this in fact mean my iMac didn't shut down properly? Just guessing.

To shutdown your iMac go to: "Apple / Shutdown" from
the drop down menu bar.
To sleep your iMac go to: "Apple / Sleep" from the
drop down menu bar or the auto sleep funtion!
Using the power button to shutdown the iMac can cause
loss of data, file corruption and damage to your HD.
Go to: "Apple / System Preferences / Energy Saver /
Options" Look at "Allow power button to sleep the
computer" If the the box is checked then the power
button will sleep the computer the first time you
push it, then hard shutdown the next time you push
it.

IMac won't power up at all

Have an iMac 266 G3 "Strawberry" tray load with Panther. The other day it would not power up. No chimes, no lights. Completely dead. Swapped out the power cord and also plugged it into several different outlets but nothing. Same results with the keyboard power button. The machine hadn't been on for several weeks prior to the problem.
A while back it did give an error message when booting up about the time and date being incorrect. Is that a battery issue? Could a dead battery prevent the machine from powering up at all? Remember, no chimes, no lights, no nothing. I don't want to spend a fortune on repair. Can I fix this myself or am I outta luck?

The battery may not be your only problem if your system info is correct:

The minimal RAM requirment for OS X is 128mb. Suggest you purchase as much as you can afford while you are battery shopping.

express etc. It was on 8.6 so I decided to do a clean install of OS 9.0 after i ran first aid it
installed fine but when I told it to restart and it shut down ok but the
moment it started to restart the crt flashed slightly an shut down when I
press the power on key now nothing happens. My thoughts are
1: the pram battery has come to the end
2: reset smu switch
How do I get to the mother board on this g3 it has a crt and the works are
inside

IMac won't power up after shut down.

If I shut my iMac down using the Apple menu it does not restart using the power button on the back of the screen. I have to unplug the iMac at the wall socket and plug it in again, after which the power button will restart the computer. Is this a sign of worse to come?

You should try doing a SMC reset first. Also are you really running 10.6.2, if so after you have your computer stabilized (not before!!!!!) please run Software Update.
_SMC RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord _and all peripherals_.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
_PRAM RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
• Release the keys.

IMac won't power up- Will a separate monitor work??

I believe (not sure) my power supply is shot in a 2006 iMac. I know this is a fossil however, i only need to retrieve last years tax information on it.
Took it to a Mac store today and they refuse to work on anything over 5 years old. I get nothing, no power, lights or noise. I tried to plug trick and nothing. Am i screwed? Im on a time schedule so cant really learn to replace power supply myself!

You import data from the old hard disk drive after you've installed it into an enclosure; the healthy newer Mac sees the HDD and you can use migration assistant then. You do not need anything from the old Mac but the hard disk drive. You can get instructions on how to remove or replace a hard disk drive in the old Mac from the http://ifixit.com site where there are guides. Match your old Mac with their free online guides to see the correct one.

IMac won't power up - 3rd iMac failure...

OK so my 3rd iMac is destined for the repairers (numbers 1 and 2 were returned direct to Apple as they failed within 2 weeks).
It had been randomly turning itself off and on again and this got more frequent. About a week ago it wouldnt reboot for 1.5 hours and yesterday it died totally and wouldn't reboot all evening.
There is no sound on startup, it goes to start up and fails, no screen, no noise, no nothing - and the light on the front of the display is solid white.
Any ideas? I am SO fed up with iMacs

and - whow!! -- 3 iMacs in a row with the same failure??? this sounds strange indeed! My first iMac is still running after 7.5 years, the G5 i bought 1.5 years ago has developed recently a problem, and my powerbook is running since 1 year w/o problem. Thus, you must attract bad luck, it seems.
could it be a power problem? can u try to use stabilized power?
about the start-up chime: if you turn off the output of the loudspeakers, there will be no sound.
can you start from the cd?
before I (and others) can give you some more hints, please indicate what machine you have, and what you did to get it running eventually. if the powerlight is on, something should happen...

T60p Won't "Power Up", but LED's working.

My laptop is refusing to power up, after having gone into Standby mode.
The usual method of pressing the "Fn" key to re-activate the machine simply killed the LED's. The machine then became completely unresponsive, needing the battery and power to be disconnected then reconnected before any AC-Status LED would ignite.
It is connected to the mains and the "socket" and "battery" LED's are lit.
Pressing the power button simply extinguishes the LED's (including the AC supply indicator).
Once this happens, the only way to get the LED's to come on again is, once more, to remove the battery, then connect the power supply, before re-attaching the battery.
This has happened a couple of times before, but persistant attempts have previously succeeding in getting computer to start. I leave the machine running habitually to prevent this problem from occurring usually, but I closed the lid while a guest was using the spare room.
The OS has been reporting a fault with the battery, but the machine should be able to start with no battery connected, so I'm not convinced that a replacement would solve the issue.
I'm frankly tired of expensive on-going issues with this laptop: particularly recurrent CPU fan failures and hopeless battery longevity. I'd be ready to get rid of it, but I do need to run a HDD backup. Due to outrageous cost, I'm loathe to send this back to Lenovo.
Very grateful for any advice on getting the thing to power up.
